CineEurope: recovery is closer

The Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) once again brings together the industry at CineEurope, the main cinema convention in Europe. From June 19 to 22, and with cinemas getting the audiences back to the theatres little by little, the 32nd edition of this essential event offers conferences, studio presentations, screenings, booths and a complete schedule.

O

rganized by The Film Expo Group, CineEurope is the official convention of the International Union of Cinemas (UNIC), an entity that represents exhibitor associations in 38 European territories. Cinionic is the Official Projection Provider and the Spanish company Kelonik takes care that all the studio presentations and screenings are technologically flawless. Exhibition professionals will once again witness the films that are yet to come, the emerging trends in the sector and the latest technologies and services to make cinemas even more attractive to the audience. This new edition comes just after a few very promising weeks in terms of the box office. The recovery of the pre-pandemic figures was being slow, but the outcome of the latest blockbusters releases suggest a bright future in which cinemas will once again become the great social meeting point that they always were.

Conferences and Studio Presentations The schedule in CineEurope 2023 is full of sessions of great relevance to the sector. On Monday June 19, after breakfast from 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. (Room 116-117 Foyer, Level P1), the first Business Session begins at 9:30 a.m., ‘Driving Commercial Success Through People’. Phil Clapp (UKCA), Laura Houlgatte (UNIC) and Dee Vassili (VUE International) address a subject that is not often discussed: ‘The biggest asset an organisation possesses is its people. This panel will discuss the challenges faced by human resources departments, the current employment market or the attraction of talent and how we can create a culture so they can flourish. At 10:15 a.m. one of the most interesting moments will take place and Spain will play a role in it. The filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona will be in the spotlight with a keynote that will give way CINEINFORME - JUNIO 2023

to the Executive Roundtable: ‘Engaging Audiences & The Future of the Theatre Industry’. Following a presentation that will set the scene by Lucy Jones of Comscore Movies, the panel discussion will have Sarah Lewthwaite (Movio), Andrew Cripps (Warner Bros. Pictures International), Eddy Duquenne (Kinepolis), Tim Richards (Vue International), Niels Swinkels, (Universal Pictures) and Susan Wendt (TrustNordisk). Although year 2022 meant a certain recovery of the box office and there´s lot of hope after the last successful weeks, we all have to be aware that we depend too much on a handful of titles. The session will explore current trends in the field of exhibition and distribution and reflect on what cinemas can do for a faster recovery while continuing to offer viewers the best viewing experience. After lunch at 12:00 pm in the CCIB Auditorium Foyer, the Opening Ceremony will take place in the CCIB Auditorium starting at
