ÉDITORIAL

Du 6 au 11 octobre, L’Âge d’Or Festival revient à CINEMATEK pour la troisième édition de sa nouvelle formule, inaugurée en 2014, avec un programme riche et varié qui met en avant la recherche et l’audace d’une écriture cinématographique expérimentale en prise avec le réel mais aussi avec l’intime, l’imaginaire, le psychédélique et le mythologique.

Au programme, deux sections compétitives qui réunissent des films réalisés au cours de ces trois dernières années aux quatre coins du monde (en Iran, en Indonésie, en Corée, en Turquie, en Autriche, aux États-Unis et en Belgique) : L’ÂGE D’OR, une compétition qui réunit 22 films jamais montrés à Bruxelles, dont l’un d’eux se verra remettre le Prix de l’Âge d’Or par le Jury international.

IMPATIENCE (d’après le titre du second film de Charles Dekeukeleire, 1928), nouvelle compétition pour les premiers et deuxièmes films. Cette compétition, qui réunit 8 films de jeunes cinéastes, est dotée d’un prix qui sera remis par le Jury international.

Cette année un YOUNG JURY PRIZE, sera également décerné à un film de la compétition de l’Âge d’Or par un jury composé d’étudiants des écoles d’art bruxelloises.

Par ailleurs, le festival recevra de nombreux invités tels que Peter Gidal, une des figures majeures du cinéma indépendant britannique et mondial ; les cinéastes libanais Joana Hadjithomas et Khalil Joreige, qui viendront présenter, après leur exposition individuelle au Jeu de Paume à Paris, une sélection de leurs films ainsi que des installations vidéo dans le foyer de CINEMATEK. Autres temps forts : un large programme consacré au cinéma expérimental et d’avant-garde de la côte Ouest des États-Unis (Bruce Baillie, Chick Strand et trois séances thématiques réunissant quelques trésors de la collection de l’Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), un panorama de films produits en Asie (Philippines, Inde, Indonésie, Thaïlande) qui n’ont pas à proprement parler de tradition du cinéma expérimental et qui réunit des productions récentes et plus anciennes qui n’ont jamais ou presque été montrées en Europe. Mais aussi de nombreuses autres séances spéciales (live soundtrack, atelier de cinéma pour enfants, etc.) que nous vous invitons à découvrir.

Van 06 tot 11 oktober is Âge d’Or opnieuw te gast in CINEMATEK voor de derde editie van de nieuwe formule, die in 2014 opstartte als volwaardig festival. Het wordt een rijk, gevarieerd programma dat onderzoek centraal stelt, net als de durf van een experimentele cinematografische aanpak die dicht aanleunt bij de werkelijkheid maar die evengoed het intieme, de verbeelding, het psychedelische en mythologische een stem geeft.

Op het programma staan twee competitiesecties met films die de laatste drie jaar wereldwijd werden gedraaid: films uit Iran, Indonesië, Korea, Turkije, Oostenrijk, de Verengde Staten en België. ÂGE D’OR, een competitie met 22 nooit eerder in Brussel getoonde films, waarvan één door de internationale jury met het Âge d’Or Prijs bekroond zal worden.

IMPATIENCE (genoemd naar de tweede film van Charles Dekeukeleire, uit 1928), is een nieuwe competitie voor éérste en tweede films. Deze competitie brengt 8 films van jonge cineasten, waarvan één de Prijs Impatience uitgereikt krijgt door de internationale jury. ������������������������������������������������������������������ Dit jaar zal een jury bestaande uit studenten van Brusselse kunstscholen ook een YOUNG JURY PRIZE toekennen aan een film uit de competitie van Âge d’Or. Daarnaast ontvangt het festival een groot aantal gasten. Waaronder Peter Gidal, een van de belangrijke protagonisten van de Britse en globale onafhankelijke cinema en de Libanese filmmakers Joana Hadjithomas en Khalil Joreige die net na hun solotentoonstelling in Jeu de Paume in Parijs een selectie van hun films en video-installaties in de CINEMATEK-foyer komen presenteren.

Er zijn nog andere hoogtepunten. Zo is er een rijk programma dat gewijd is aan de experimentele en avant-gardecinema van de Amerikaanse Westkust met Bruce Baillie, Chick Strand en drie thematische sessies met schatten uit de collectie van de Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (VS). We tonen ook een panorama met films uit Azië, namelijk uit de Filippijnen, India, Indonesië en Thailand, landen die strikt genomen geen experimentele filmtraditie hebben Het brengt recente en oudere producties bij elkaar die in Europa nauwelijks of nooit werden getoond. Tot slot nodigen we u uit om tal van andere speciale sessies te komen ontdekken, zoals live-soundtracks en workshops ‘zonder camera’ voor kinderen.

From the 6th until the 11th of October, L’Âge d’Or will return to the CINEMATEK for the third edition of its new formula, inaugurated in 2014, with a rich and varied program focused on the search and audacity of an experimental cinematic voice engaged with the real but also with the intimate, the imaginary, the psychedelic and the mythological.

Within the program are two competitive sections that unite films made during the last three years from all over the world (Iran, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey, Austria, the United States and Belgium).

L’ÂGE D’OR, a competition that unites 22 films never before shown in Brussels. One of the films will receive the Âge d’Or Prize from the international jury.

Acteur inoubliable chez Buñuel, Pasolini, Garrel, Rocha ou Visconti, c’est avec son cachet de comédien pour le film Benjamin ou les mémoires d’un puceau de Michel Deville que Pierre Clémenti achète en 1967 sa première caméra Beaulieu 16 mm. Pendant plus de quinze ans, il filme au fil des jours et des rencontres une série de journaux intimes. Dans La deuxième femme, longtemps considéré comme inédit, Bulle Ogier et Viva, Nico et Tina Aumont, Philippe Garrel et Udo Kier, un spectacle de Béjart, une pièce de Marc’O, des concerts de Bob Marley et Patti Smith… pas toujours reconnaissables – passés comme dans l’accélérateur de particules d’un véritable maelström d’images psychédéliques.

Ik heb altijd alleen gewerkt en ik heb slechts mezelf geruïneerd.’ (Pierre Clémenti) Pierre Clémenti, een onvergetelijke acteur bij Buñuel, Pasolini, Garrel, Rocha of Visconti, koopt in 1967 – met wat hij verdient voor de film Benjamin ou les mémoires d’un puceau van Michel Deville – zijn eerste 16mm-Beaulieucamera. Gedurende meer dan vijftien jaar filmt hij aan de hand van dagelijkse ontmoetingen een reeks intieme dagboeken. In La deuxième femme, tot 2010 als onuitgegeven beschouwd, zien we Bulle Ogier en Viva, Nico en Tina Aumont, Philippe Garrel en Udo Kier, een optreden van Béjart, een stuk van Marc’O, concerten van Bob Marley en Patti Smith (niet altijd herkenbaar)… Het is als een maalstroom van psychedelische beelden die door een deeltjesversneller worden gedraaid.

In 1967, Pierre Clémenti, an unforgettable actor in Buñuel, Pasolini, Garrel, Rocha or Visconti, buys with what he earns for Michel Devill’s film Benjamin ou les mémoires d’un puceau his first 16mm Beaulieu camera. Over the course of more than fifteen years, Clémenti films a series of intimate diaries, starting from daily encounters. In La deuxième femme, considered unpublished until 2010, we see Bulle Ogier and Viva, Nico and Tina Aumont, Philippe Garrel and Udo Kier, a performance by Béjart, a piece by Marc’O, concerts by Bob Marley and Patti Smith (not always recognisable)... Vincent Epplay est un artiste du son et de l’image. Si les catalogues d’illustration sonore et autres disques d’étalonnage hi-fi forment la matière première de sa pâte sonore, c’est pour mieux les détourner de leur fonction illustrative et interroger la matérialité même du son. Il a aussi enregistré des bandes-son pour le cinéma et collaboré à de multiples reprises avec Jac Berrocal et David Fenech. Acteur, plasticien et musicien, Samon Takahashi multiplie les glissements d’une pratique à l’autre. Il joue dans le groupe GOL, a enregistré avec Luc Ferrari, Ghédalia Tazartès et Ramuntcho Matta. Vincent Epplay et Samon Takahashi explorent différents mondes musicaux (électro-acoustiques, improvisés, composés, krautrock, etc.) depuis plus de dix ans. En 2010, ils ont sorti le LP Soundtracks for the Movies of Pierre Clémenti sur le label Planam.

Sounddesigncatalogi en andere hifi-kalibratieplaten vormen de grondstof van zijn geluid. Daarbij stapt Epplay echter af van een illustratieve, functionele aanpak en stelt in plaats daarvan vooral de vraag naar de materialiteit zelf van geluid. Hij heeft ook soundtracks opgenomen voor film en werkte herhaaldelijk samen met Jac Berrocal en David Fenech. Acteur, kunstenaar en muzikant Samon Takahashi glipt van de ene praktijk in de andere. Hij speelt in de groep GOL en nam muziek op met Luc Ferrari, Ghédalia Tazartès en Ramuntcho Matta. Vincent Epplay en Samon Takahashi verkennen al meer dan tien jaar verschillende muzikale werelden: elektroakoestische en geïmproviseerde muziek, composities, krautrock, enzovoort. In 2010 brachten ze de LP Soundtracks for the Movies of Pierre Clémenti uit op het label Planam.

Knokke, Belgique. Une petite station balnéaire mondaine, lieu de villégiature du « beau monde » et lieu de naissance du premier festival au monde dédié au cinéma d’avant-garde : EXPRMNTL. Le festival n’a connu que cinq éditions, en 1949, 1958, 1963, 1967 et 1974, mais chacune d’elles est vite devenue mythique. Le documentaire EXPRMNTL raconte le cinéma expérimental à travers l’histoire de ce festival. Une histoire qui questionne la nature même du cinéma et les origines de notre culture de l’image.

Knokke, België. Een kleine mondaine kustplaats, thuis­ basis van de beau monde en bakermat van ‘s werelds eerste festival gewijd aan avant-gardecinema: EXPRMNTL. Het festival kende slechts vijf edities, in 1949, 1958, 1963, 1967 en 1974, maar die vijf edities namen al snel mythische proporties aan. De documentaire EXPRMNTL vertelt het verhaal van de experimentele film aan de hand van de geschiedenis van dit festival, een geschiedenis die de aard van film in vraag stelt en de oorsprong van onze beeldcultuur belicht.

Knokke, Belgium. A small mundane coastal town, home to the beau monde and cradle of the world’s first festival dedicated to avant-garde cinema: EXPRMNTL. The festival knew only five editions, in 1949, 1958, 1963, 1967 and 1974 but those five editions soon became legendary. The documentary EXPRMNTL tells the story of experimental film through the history of this festival, a history which questions the very nature of film and illuminates the origins of our visual culture.

Des présentations de livres rythmeront également le festival samedi, dimanche et lundi entre les deux séances du soir. L’occasion de rencontrer autour d’un verre et de quoi se restaurer les auteurs et éditeurs de trois livres. Samedi, Peter Gidal et Mark Webber partageront avec nous l’aventure de Flare Out: Aesthetics 1966-2016. Dimanche, Garbiñe Ortega présentera la première mono­graphie entièrement consacrée à Bruce Baillie dont elle prépare la publication. Lundi nous accueillerons Birgit Hein, présidente du jury de la première éditon du festival L’Âge d’Or et cinéaste incontournable de la scène expérimentale pour son ouvrage Film als Idee.

Dit jaar geven ook boekvoorstellingen kleur aan het festival : zaterdag, zondag en maandag is er, tussen de twee avondvoorstellingen, de gelegenheid om bij een goed glas en een hapje de auteurs en uitgevers van drie boeken te ontmoeten. Zaterdag zullen Peter Gidal en Mark Webber hun avontuur met ons delen rond Flare Out: Aesthetics 1966-2016. Zondag zal Garbiñe Ortega de eerste monografie volledig gewijd aan Bruce Baillie voorstellen. Ze is momenteel de publicatie aan het voorbereiden. Maandag zullen we Birgit Hein ontvangen, juryvoorzitster van de eerste editie van het Âge d’Or Festival en onmiskenbare sleutelfiguur van de experimentele scene, haar werk Film als Idee.

The festival will also be marked by book presentations: Saturday, Sunday and Monday between the two evening screenings, the authors and editors of three books will meet us over drinks and a bite to eat. Dit tweetalig Engels/Spaans boek werd gecoördineerd door Garbiñe Ortega en Sandra Gómez en is uitgegeven in Mexico. De uitgave werd mogelijk gemaakt door dezelfde crowdfundingcampagne die gebruikt werd voor het rondreizende Bruce Baillie-retrospectief dat dit jaar ook Âge d’Or aandoet en is het eerste volledig aan de Amerikaanse filmmaker gewijde boek. Met teksten van Steve Anker, Peter Hutton, Denah Johnston, Janis Crystal Lipzin, Scott MacDonald, Richard Peña, Andréa Picard, J.P. The publication is made possible by the same crowdfunding campaign as was used for the itinerant retrospective of films by Bruce Baillie wich comes to Âge d’Or this year, and is the first book entirely devoted to the American filmmaker. Birgit Hein belongs to the filmmakers who have had a lasting influence on the history and the present scene of the experimental film. Birgit Hein argues that film work is impossible without a notion of the actual possibilities and purposes of the film medium, and that every single film project must be based on this general idea.

Surveying a period of four decades the volume comprises a selection of Birgit Heins most important texts and interviews, complemented by commentaries and numerous unpublished photographies, which finally become accessible.

TWO JURIES – THREE PRIZES Pour sa troisième édition, l’Âge d’Or Festival propose deux compétitions : ÂGE D’OR et IMPATIENCE. De internationale jury, samengesteld uit Mieke De Wulf (voorzitster), Shai Heredia en Mark Toscano, zal de Âge d’Or-prijs (€ 5.000) en de Impatience-prijs (€ 2.500) toekennen. Studenten van verschillende kunstscholen zullen als ‘Young Jury’ eveneens een prijs (€ 1.000) toekennen aan een film uit de Âge d’Or-competitie. INTERNATIONAL JURY MIEKE DE WULF PRESIDENT OF THE JURY Mieke De Wulf est productrice. Jusqu’en 2009, elle œuvre au sein de A Private View, société de production gantoise qu’elle a co-fondée en 1994 et où elle a développé et accompagné plus de 25 films, fictions et documentaires, tous distribués internationalement. Elle est également la fondatrice et directrice de Art Cinema OFFoff, une plateforme de projection et de recherche dévolue au cinéma expérimental. Depuis 2009, elle enseigne la production aux départements cinéma de la School of Arts à Gand et de la LUCA School of Arts à Bruxelles. Elle travaille actuellement comme consultante freelance et comme productrice de films expérimentaux et documentaires.

Mieke De Wulf is producente en lineproducer. Tot 2009 werkte ze voor het Gentse productiehuis A Private View, dat ze in 1994 mee oprichtte en waar ze op meer dan 25 langspeelfilms en documentaires heeft gewerkt, die ook internationaal gedistribueerd werden. Ze is de bezieler van Art Cinema OFFoff, een vertonings- en onderzoeksplatform voor experimentele film, waar ze tot vandaag instaat voor de zakelijke leiding. Sinds 2009 doceert De Wulf filmproductie aan de filmafdelingen van de School of Arts in Gent en LUCA School of Arts in Brussel. Mieke De Wulf is producer as well as line producer. Until 2009, she worked for Ghent production house A Private View, which she co-founded in 1994 and where she has worked on more than 25 internationally distributed films, both feature films and documentaries. She is the founder and manager of Art Cinema OFFoff, a screening and research platform for experimental film. SHAI HEREDIA Shai Heredia est cinéaste et programmatrice. Après ses études au St. Xaviers College (Bombay) et au Goldsmiths College (Londres), elle fonde Experimenta, le festival international du cinéma expérimental en Inde (2003). Elle a conçu des programmes de cinéma expérimental pour des festivals et des salles indépendantes à travers le monde, dont la Berlinale et la Tate Modern de Londres.

Son film I Am Micro, coréalisé avec Shumona Goel (2012), a été montré aux festivals de Toronto, Londres, Rotterdam, et à L’Âge d’Or en 2014. Acclamé par la critique, il a reçu un National Award du gouvernement indien. An Old Dog’s Diary, le dernier film en date de Heredia et Goel (2015) a reçu quant à lui le prix du meilleur court métrage au BFI London international Festival. INTERNATIONAL JURY MARK TOSCANO Mark Toscano travaille depuis 2003 à l’Academy Film Archive à Los Angeles, où il est spécialisé dans la programmation, la conservation et la préservation de films d’artistes. Il opère à partir des collections de plus de cent cinéastes, et a supervisé la conservation et la préservation de centaines de films, dont ceux de Stan Brakhage, Gus Van Sant, Pat O’Neill, et de nombreux autres. ÂGE D’OR La compétition de l’Âge d’Or est créée pour mettre en valeur des films produits au cours de ces trois dernières années. Vingt-deux films sélectionnés sans distinction de genre ou de durée qui, sans tomber dans le formalisme et en étant en prise avec des réalités ou des imaginaires singuliers, explorent de nouvelles voies d’expression s’écartant des conformismes cinématographiques. Deux Prix seront attribués pour soutenir les cinéastes dans leur travail : le Prix de l’ÂGE D’OR (5 000 €) décerné par le Jury international ainsi que le YOUNG JURY PRIZE (1 000 €) De Âge d’Or-competitie wil recente films - gemaakt in de laatste drie jaar – tot hun recht laten komen. De 22 films, allen innig verstrengeld met bijzondere reële en imaginaire denkbeelden en gekozen zonder onderscheid te maken op basis van genre of duur, verkennen nieuwe stijlen die afwijken van het cinematografisch conformisme zonder daarom te vervallen in een formalistische aanpak. De twee prijzen worden uitgereikt om cineasten te steunen in de verdere ontwikkeling van hun werk: de ÂGE D’OR prijs (€ 5.000), toegekend door de internationale jury, en de YOUNG JURY PRIZE (€ 1.000).

The Âge d’Or competition was created to validate films produced during the last three years. Twentytwo films selected without genre or duration distinctions, which avoid falling into formalism and are engaged with singular realities or imaginaries, explore new routes of expression whilst departing from cinematographic conventions. Two prizes will be given to support the filmmakers in their work: the ÂGE D’OR Prize (€ 5,000) awarded by the international jury, and the YOUNG JURY PRIZE (€ 1,000).

Taking its cue from Charles Dekeukeleire’s film of the same name, the Impatience Competition aims to reveal filmmakers at the dawn of their cinematic careers. Un voyage contemplatif, à la fois lent et rythmé, au plus profond des mémoires d’enfance de la cinéaste Azadeh Navai (née à Téhéran en 1985). Munie d’une ancienne caméra Bolex 16 mm et d’un sténopé, la cinéaste retourne à Téhéran et Ispahan où les perceptions et souvenirs des lieux, des senteurs et des émotions lui servent à explorer un paysage profondément personnel. Elle se demande : Quelle est la texture de la mémoire ? De quelle manière le temps – la lumière, le vent, le souffle de l’histoire – imprime-til sa marque sur les monuments et images du passé ? Les convulsions de ces souvenirs sont perceptibles jusque dans le grain de l’image cinématographique – kaléidoscopique dans la géométrie de l’instabilité et des flux.

Een langzame, ritmische en contemplatieve reis naar de vroegste jeugdherinneringen van filmmaker Azadeh Navai (Teheran, 1985). Met een oude 16mm-Bolex en een handgemaakte gaatjescamera keert Navai terug naar de Iraanse steden Teheran en Esfahan, waar de percepties en herinneringen van plaatsen, emoties en geuren dienen als instrumenten waarmee een diep persoonlijk landschap wordt blootgelegd. A slow, rhythmic and contemplative journey into filmmaker Azadeh Navai’s (Tehran, 1985) earliest childhood memories. With an old 16mm Bolex and a hand-made pinhole camera, Navai returns to Tehran and Esfahan, Iran, where the perceptions and recollections of places, emotions, and scents serve as vehicles through which she exposes a deeply personal landscape. She asks – what is the texture of memory? In what ways does time – the light, wind, and air of history – wear upon the monuments and the images of the past ? The convulsions of recollection are perceptible even in the shifting grains of the film image – kaleidoscopic in their geometries of instability and flux.

While investigating her late parents’ involvement with the AngloIranian Oil Company (BP) the filmmaker comes across the letters of a petroleum geologist in Iran in the 1930’s, who would later embark on a search for the origins of “ civilisation ”. The film sets out on its own exploration, to decipher signs from the fragmented images buried in the BP archive. This journey through images of the past interweaves stories drawn from both personal memory and from the records of an imperial history, and gradually builds a picture of a 20th century colonial encounter. Le second essai d’une série d’études sur d’anciens gazomètres situés dans le nord de Londres. Les gazomètres ont servi à stocker le gaz issu des gisements locaux de charbon, et sont tombés en désuétude lors du déclin du gaz de la mer du Nord et du développement des pipelines destinés à acheminer ce combustible depuis la Norvège et la Russie. Ce film propose une permutation (non exhaustive) de combinaisons entre le noir et blanc et la couleur, le jour et la nuit, le champ et le contre-champ – sous la forme de longues séquences en accéléré (time-lapse) filmées au cours de toute une journée ou de toute une nuit.

The second in a series of studies of obsolete gas holders in North London. The gasometers were used to store gas made locally from coal but have fallen into disuse with the decline of North Sea gas and the development of pipeline technologies for pumping gas from Norway and Russia. The film is an incomplete set of permutations that combines the possible combinations of colour and b&w, day and night, angle and reverse angle in the form of allday or all-night time lapse sequences.

De tweede film in een reeks studies over verouderde gashouders in Noord-Londen. De gashouders werden gebruikt om gas dat lokaal uit steenkool gewonnen werd op te slaan maar zijn in onbruik geraakt door de teloorgang van het Noordzeegas en de ontwikkeling van pijplijntechnologieën voor het verpompen van gas uit Noorwegen en Rusland. De film is een onvolledige reeks permutaties – met combinaties van kleur en zwart-wit, dag en nacht, shot en tegenshot – in de vorm van time-lapse-sequenties die een hele dag of een hele nacht beslaan.

De Indonesische maskerkunsten zijn duizenden jaren oud.

Er wordt gewoonlijk naar verwezen met wayang topeng (wajang: schaduw of marionet; topeng: masker). Er wordt aangenomen dat wayang topeng afkomstig is van tribale doodsriten, waarbij gemaskerde dansers gezien werden als de tolken van de goden. In de laagste rangen van de Javaanse samenleving vind je een unieke manifestatie van deze gemaskerde tradities. De beoefenaars zijn performers, maar het zijn niet louter entertainers, ze willen niet slechts vermaken. Hun ambitie is om in acht genomen, geëerd te worden, succesvol te zijn. Ze zijn een pad ingeslagen waarvan ze weten dat het zal leiden naar een hogere staat, naar een eervolle en nobele positie.

The masked arts of Indonesia are thousands of years old. They are commonly referred to as wayang topeng (wayang: shadow or puppet; topeng: mask). It is believed that wayang topeng originated from tribal death rites, where masked dancers were considered the interpreters of the gods. In the lowest rungs of Javanese society a unique manifestation of these masked traditions can be found. Its practitioners are performers, but they are not merely entertainers. Their aim is not simply to amuse. Their ambition is to be respected, to be honoured, to be successful. They have embarked on a path they know will lead to a higher state, to an honourable and noble position.

Il y a bien longtemps, au Moyen-Âge, Ani était une ville très importante. On l’appelait « la ville aux 1001 clochers » et elle rivalisait en taille et en beauté avec Constantinople ou Jérusalem.

Mais, au XIe siècle, des guerriers Seljuk venus d’Asie centrale envahirent Ani. D’autres sièges, pillages et invasions allaient suivre.

Les habitants commencèrent à abandonner la ville, jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit totalement déserte et que le silence y règne. Tout ceci est arrivé il y a bien longtemps. Pourtant, n’est-il pas possible de faire mieux que le silence ? Aujourd’hui, chaque étudiant reçoit une partition musicale et un instrument conçu pour imiter le chant des oiseaux. Une fois à Ani, chacun d’eux se cache dans les ruines et se met à appeler les oiseaux. Dans un premier temps

quelques petits cris se font entendre, puis une mélodie prend forme, à laquelle des nuées d’oiseaux font écho à travers la vallée, jusqu’en Arménie. Et le chant se poursuivra jusqu’à l’épuisement, jusqu’à ce que les oiseaux reviennent à Ani et que la vie reprenne dans cette ville fantôme.

Once upon a time Ani was one of the most important cities of the Middle Ages. People called it “ the city of the 1001 churches ” and it competed in size and beauty with Constantinople and Jerusalem.

But in the eleventh century Seljuks warriors coming from Central Asia invaded Ani. Sieges, sackings and more invasions followed...

People started abandoning the city until all life left and silence fell into Ani. This all happened many years ago... Yet, can’t we do better than silence ? Today, each student will receive a musical score and a instrument designed to imitate birds. A birdcall. Once in Ani everyone will hide in the ruins and start calling the birds. At first a few cries will interrupt the silence, then a melody will grow until a chorus of bird calls echo across the valley all the way to Armenia. And the singing will go on to the point of exhaustion, until the birds return to Ani and life comes back to the forgotten city.

Ooit was Ani een van de belangrijkste middeleeuwse steden. Men noemde ze ‘de stad van de 1001 kerken’ en ze concurreerde qua grootte en schoonheid met Constantinopel en Jeruzalem. Maar in de elfde eeuw vielen Seltsjoekse strijders, afkomstig uit Centraal-Azië, Ani binnen.

Belegeringen, plunderingen en meer invasies volgden...

Mensen begonnen de stad te verlaten, tot al het leven verdwenen was en de stilte over Ani viel. Dit alles gebeurde vele jaren geleden… Maar kunnen we niets beters doen dan zwijgen? Vandaag krijgt elke student een muziekpartituur en een instrument om vogels mee te imiteren. Een lokroep. Eenmaal in Ani toegekomen, zal iedereen zich in de ruïnes verbergen en de vogels beginnen lokken. Eerst doorbreken een paar kreten de stilte, dan zal er een melodie aanzwellen – tot een koor van vogelgezang over de vallei zal echoën, helemaal tot in Armenië. En het zingen zal doorgaan tot aan de uitputting, totdat de vogels opnieuw naar Ani terugkeren en het leven terugkeert naar de vergeten stad.

In Blue Bird landt de mooie blauwe vogel uit de titel, ‘met een beetje rood aan de ene kant’, in een boom tussen een zwerm slonzige grijze vogels. Hij begint hun veren één voor één uit te trekken en ‘met wat lijm van de grond’ op de stam en de takken van de boom te kleven totdat hij ‘als fluweel’ wordt en de naakte vogels (nu roze in plaats van grijs) samenscharen aan de voet van de boom…

In Blue Bird, the beautiful blue bird of the title, “ with a bit of red on one side ”, lands amongst a flock of dowdy grey birds in a tree and proceeds to pluck their feathers one by one, applying them, “ with some glue from the ground ”, to the trunk and branches of the tree until it becomes “ like velvet ” and the naked birds now pink rather than grey huddle at the foot of the tree…

Le film aborde les paysages de l’archipel volcanique de la République de Vanuatu, avant sa destruction par le cyclone Pam au début de 2015 – devenant ainsi une sorte de document hanté d’un écosystème aujourd’hui irrévocablement détruit. Une voix féminine hésitante lit, en trébuchant sur les mots, un poème de Henri Michaux à propos d’une vie vécue dans un pays lointain.

Des images de volcans en activité sur l’île, des débris sous-marins de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, des enfants qui jouent, des épaves de bateaux se transforment, à l’autre bout du monde, en souvenirs numériques intangibles du lieu. Les images d’une terre érodée entrent en résonnance avec un film lui-même érodé – tandis que sur la mer une silhouette solitaire dérive sur son bateau.

Zo worden de beelden een spookachtig document van een ecosysteem dat vandaag onherroepelijk veranderd is. Een aarzelende vrouwelijke stem leest, vol haperingen en vergissingen, een gedicht van Henri Michaux dat het leven in een ver land verhaalt. Beelden van het eiland – actieve vulkanen, onderwaterpuin uit WO II, spelende kinderen, vernielde boten – transformeren tot ontastbare digitale herinneringen aan het eiland, gemaakt aan de andere kant van de wereld. The film captures the landscapes of the remote volcanic Republic of Vanuatu archipelago, before they were devastated by Cyclone Pam in early 2015, the footage becoming a ghostly document of an ecosystem now irrevocably altered. A hesitant female voice reads a poem by Henri Michaux, recounting a life lived in a distant land, full of faltering and mistakes. Island imagery of active volcanoes, underwater WW2 debris, children playing, and wrecked boats transform into intangible digital recollections of the island, made on the opposite side of the world. Images of the eroded land merge with eroding film, a lone figure on a boat drifts at sea.

Tourné à Sao Tomé-et-Principe (un petit archipel lusophone du golfe de Guinée), le film témoigne d’un rite vaudou africain connu localement sous le nom de djambi. En état d’ébriété, les participants dansent et entrent dans un état de transe qui leur permet de communiquer avec les esprits des morts. Les cinéastes présentent ce rituel sans autre montage que la succession des bobines de 30 m de leur caméra Bolex (chaque plan est un plan-séquence).

Recourant à un style documentaire, caméra à l’épaule, les artistes finissent par associer activement les participants à la transe à la seconde moitié du tournage en leur confiant la caméra.

Shot in São Tomé and Príncipe (a Portuguese speaking Island nation off the western coast of Central Africa), the film bears witness to a West African voodoo ritual, known locally as Djambi.

Whilst intoxicated, the participants dance and enter a state of trance in which they channel the spirits of the dead. Gusmao and Paiva present the ritual without any editing, apart from the sequencing of the reels; each shot is a single one, running from the beginning until the end of a 30 meter Bolex negative reel. Using a documentary style of handheld camera, the artists engage the trance performers within the latter’s stage, and then share the camera with the performers.

Delicate energiedraden vormen een spiraal en transformeren tot mysterieuze microscopische cellen van gouden stof: dit zijn de lichtende deeltjes van de droom van de alchemist. Prima Materia is geïnspireerd op Lucretius’ beklijvende verwondering, zijn enige boek: De Rerum Natura. Het is een eerbetoon aan de eerste, aarzelende fotografische opnames, die de uitzonderlijke natuur lieten zien van fenomenen die zich net buiten de menselijke visie schuilhouden.

Delicate threads of energy spiral and transform into mysterious microscopic cells of golden dust: these are the luminous particles of the alchemist’s dream. Dans ce film commencé en 2006 à la Film Farm (résidence pour cinéastes expérimentaux dans l’Ontario, au Canada) et enrichi de nouvelles images, les objets – vivants et inertes – sont examinés à la fois à travers le viseur de la caméra et à travers un microscope. Des chèvres furent interviewées chaque jour et les pensées traduites en lumière à peu près dans l’ordre où elles apparurent.

Line of Apsides werd in 2006 gefilmd in de Film Farm in de Canadese stad Ontario; daaraan werden in de loop der tijd extra beelden toegevoegd. Geanimeerde en inerte objecten werden door de zoeker van de camera en onder een microscoop onderzocht, en dagelijks werden ook geiten geïnterviewd. Gedachten gevormd in licht, ongeveer in de volgorde waarin ze werden aangetroffen.

Filmed at the Film Farm, Ontario (Canada) in 2006 and added to over time. Objects, animate and inert, were examined through the viewfinder and under a microscope and goats were interviewed daily. Thoughts coaxed into light in roughly the order they were encountered.

Jakub Vrba et Lukas Marxt se rendent dans le Nord-Ouest de la Bohème. Jakub Vrba vient de là, Lukas Marxt n’y est jamais allé.

Leur film aborde un site marqué par les soubresauts de l’histoire dont les transformations et les changements de souveraineté se retrouvent profondément ancrés dans le paysage. Les deux ciné­ astes traitent de ces enchevêtrements sensibles entre paysage et histoire dans une œuvre expérimentale de terrain qui porte en elle les idées de répétition, de tentative et d’échec.

Jakub Vrba en Lukas Marxt reizen naar Noordwest-Bohemen. Jakub Vrba komt uit die streek, maar Lukas Marxt is er nog nooit geweest. De film gaat over een site van permanente verandering, waar de historische transformaties en grensverschuivingen het landschap scherp getekend hebben. Their film deals with a site of permanent change where historical transformations and border shifts have been fiercely embedded into the landscape. Together, Vrba and Marxt address the sitespecific sensitive entanglements between landscape and history in a work where they also deal with the ideas of rehearsal, attempt and failure in a process of experimental fieldwork.

Peter Gidal est une des figures majeures du cinéma indépendant et d’avant-garde britannique. Né en 1946, il étudie le théâtre, la psychologie et la littérature à l’université Brandeis, Massachusetts (1964-1968) et à l’université de Munich (1966-1967). Il est étudiant au Royal College of Art entre 1968 et 1971, et enseigne la théorie du cinéma jusqu’en 1984. Membre actif de la London Film-Makers’ Co-operative depuis 1969, dont il fut le programmateur entre 1971 et 1974, il est également cofondateur de la Independent Film-Makers’ Association en 1975. Les films de Peter Gidal ont été montrés à travers le monde, et ont fait l’objet de rétrospectives à l’ICA (Institut d’art contemporain, Londres, 1983), au Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, 1996), et à DocPoint (Helsinki, 2014). Il remporte le Prix de la Recherche à Toulon en 1974, et son dernier film Not Far At All (2013) remporte le Prix de L’Âge d’Or en 2015 à Bruxelles.

Deux courts et un moyen métrages de la première période de l’œuvre de Peter Gidal convoquant incognito un célèbrissime chanteur folk de l’époque (Key) et, surtout, de nombreux éléments du langage filmique (montage en jump-cut, répétitions, durées, zoom, mise au point, flou, etc.) pour questionner le cinéma et notre regard en suscitant l’admiration de Jonas Mekas pour Room Film 1973 : « De manière très subtile et très plastique il traite de lumière. JOANA HADJITHOMAS & KHALIL JOREIGE Nés à Beyrouth en 1969, c’est en photographiant les ruines de la ville laminée par la guerre au début des années 1990, que Joana Hadjithomas et Khalil Joreige sont devenus artistes : par nécessité, sans passer par une école d’art ou de cinéma. Photographies, installations, films, vidéos, leur œuvre, vaste, se nourrit de leur questionnement sur la fabrication de l’image et les événements politiques et historiques de leur pays. Ils explorent indistinctement l’histoire (officielle et tenue secrète), la latence des images, la mémoire (individuelle et collective), l’imaginaire et sa transmission, et enfin leur propre biographie, jamais séparée de leur travail. À l’instar des très beaux croisements entre leur approche plastique et cinématographique, les artistes aiment à mêler les genres: à la frontière entre documentaire et fiction, ils réalisent en 2008 Je veux voir (présenté en selection officielle, Un certain regard, à Cannes), où Catherine Deneuve parcourt les régions libanaises traversées par la guerre de 2006. Exposés dans les biennales, musées ou centres d’art contemporain partout dans le monde, le Jeu de Paume à Paris leur consacrait cette année une large exposition individuelle.

L’Âge d’Or Festival accueille une rétrospective de leurs longs et courts métrages ainsi que des installations vidéo et organise une masterclass autour de leur travail avec Dirk Snauwaert (voir page 18).

It was by photographing the ruins of Beirut, destroyed by the war in the early 1990s, that Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige became artists. By necessity, in other words, without going to an art or film school. Photographs, installations, films, videos: their vast work feeds on questions concerning the manufacture of images as well as their country’s political and historical events. By weaving thematic or conceptual links between each practice, they indiscriminately explore the history (both official and secret), the latency of images, individual and collective memory, the imaginary and its transmission, and finally, their own biography, something which is never separated from their work. On the border between documentary and fiction, they realised I Want to See (Je veux voir) in 2008 and presented in the official selection, Un Certain Regard, at Cannes, they asked Catherine Deneuve to traverse the regions ravished by the war of July 2006. Hadjithomas and Joreige are shown at biennales, in museums and contemporary art centres worldwide. This year still, Jeu de Paume in Paris devoted a solo exhibition to their work. Âge d’Or Festival hosts a retrospective of their features and short films, shows installations, and organises a masterclass about their work with Dirk Snauwaert (see page 18).

Ze werden kunstenaar door de ruïnes van de stad te fotograferen, begin jaren ’90 verwoest door de oorlog; uit noodzaak dus, zonder naar een kunst- of filmschool te gaan. Foto’s, installaties, films, video’s: hun omvangrijke werk voedt zich met vragen rond de fabricatie van het beeld en de politieke en historische gebeurtenissen in hun land. Ze verkennen zowel de geschiedenis (de officiële en de geheimgehouden), de latentie van beelden, de individuele en collectieve herinnering, de verbeelding (en de overdracht van die verbeelding) als de eigen biografie, die nooit van hun werk gescheiden is. En 1999, Hadjithomas et Joreige rencontrent six anciens détenus récemment libérés du camp de Khiam dans la zone occupée par Israël au Sud-Liban. Assis sur une chaise, face caméra, ceux-ci racontent leurs années de détention et l’activité artistique qu’ils y ont développée et qui les a aidés à survivre à l’enfermement et la torture. C’est par les récits des anciens détenus que le spectateur peut s’imaginer ce camp interdit d’accès jusqu’en 2000.

Khiam sera détruit lors de la guerre de juillet 2006 et les artistes retrouvent alors les anciens prisonniers, leur demandant de réagir à cette destruction. Prix International Georges De Beauregard, FID Marseille 2008.

In 1999 ontmoeten Hadjithomas en Joreige zes voormalige gevangenen die net daarvoor werden vrijgelaten uit het Khiam-gevangenenkamp in de door Israël bezette zone in Zuid-Libanon. Zittend op een stoel recht tegenover de camera, vertellen ze over de jaren van gevangenschap en over de artistieke activiteit die ze er hebben ontwikkeld, die hen hielp de opsluiting en de martelingen te overleven. Via de verhalen van ex-gedetineerden kan de kijker zich een beeld vormen van het kamp, waartoe tot 2000 niemand toegang had. Khiam wordt tijdens de oorlog van 2006 verwoest. De kunstenaars vinden de ex-gedetineerden terug en peilen naar hun reactie op die vernietiging. Georges De Beauregard International Prize, FID Marseille 2008.

In 1999 Hadjithomas and Joreige meet six former, newly released prisoners from the Khiam detention camp in the area occupied

by Israel in southern Lebanon. Sitting on a chair, facing the camera, they tell about these years of detention and the artistic activity they developed there, helping them survive the imprisonment and torture. Through the stories of former inmates the viewer can imagine the camp, to which all access was denied until 2000.

Khiam was destroyed during the 2006 war. The artists meet the former prisoners again and ask them to react to this destruction.

Le 19 août 1985, durant la guerre civile, l’oncle de Khalil, Alfred Junior Kettaneh, est enlevé. Il est encore aujourd’hui officiellement porté disparu, comme 17 000 de ses compatriotes. En mars 2001, les artistes ont trouvé les archives, photographies et films lui ayant appartenu. Parmi ces documents figurait un « film latent », un film Super 8 encore non développé qui avait survécu aux ravages de la guerre. Après des hésitations, les artistes se sont résolus à envoyer la pellicule à un laboratoire et le film s’est révélé voilé, blanc… À force de travailler sur la correction des couleurs, cherchant dans les couches sensibles de la pellicule, une image ressurgit de la blancheur, comme si elle ne pouvait être totalement effacée, une image rémanente refusant de disparaître.

19 augustus 1985. Khalils nonkel, Alfred Junior Kettaneh, wordt tijdens de burgeroorlog ontvoerd. Hij is vandaag nog altijd officieel vermist, net als 17.000 van zijn landgenoten. In maart 2001 vonden Hadjithomas en Joreige zijn archieven, foto’s en films, waaronder ook een ‘latente film’, een Super 8-film die nog niet ontwikkeld was en die de verwoestingen van de oorlog had overleefd. Na enige aarzeling besloten de filmmakers hem naar een labo te sturen: over de film bleek een witte sluier te hangen. Via kleurcorrectie, speurend doorheen de gevoelige lagen van de film, duikt er in het witte vlak een beeld op, alsof het niet helemaal uitgewist is kunnen worden – een nabeeld dat weigert te verdwijnen.

August 19, 1985. Khalil’s uncle, Alfred Junior Kettaneh, is kidnapped during the civil war. He is still officially missing today, just like 17,000 of his countrymen. In March 2001, Hadjithomas and Joreige found his archives, photographs and films, including a ‘latent movie’: a still undeveloped Super 8 film that had survived the ravages of war. After some hesitation, the artists sent it to a lab and the film returned veiled, mostly white... Through colour correction, seeking through layers of sensitive film, an image resurfaces through the whiteness, as if it could not be totally erased – an afterimage refusing to disappear.

Intégrant la fiction dans un contexte réel, ils font se rencontrer la star française Catherine Deneuve et leur acteur fétiche Rabih Mroué, qui parcourront ensemble les régions touchées par le conflit.

Joana Hadjithomas en Khalil Joreige denken na over het beeld, over wat cinema nog steeds kàn, en keren terug naar Libanon om de staat waarin het land zich bevindt te filmen – en de nieuwe ruïnes. De kunstenaars integreren fictie in een reële context. Terwijl de kunstenaars in hun werk willen aantonen dat het onmogelijk is om Beiroet te filmen, krijgen ze de televisieopdracht ‘Beirut gezien door...’. Ze draaien Rounds met Rabih Mroué, die ons aan het stuur van een auto de stad beschrijft.

Whilst the artists are striving in their work to show the impossibility of filming Beirut, they received this command for television: ‘Beirut as seen by...’. They shoot Rounds with Rabih Mroué, describing to us the city at the wheel of a car.

Myriam Garfunkel, critique de cinéma et fervente adepte du Musée du cinéma, nous a quittés il y a plus de vingt ans. Peu après son décès, sa famille a créé un fonds destiné à la restauration de films, qui, géré par la Fondation Roi Baudouin, soutient précieusement la Cinémathèque dans son travail de conservation.

Filmmuseum. Kort na haar dood richtte haar familie een fonds voor filmrestauraties op. Dit door de Koning Boudewijnstichting beheerd fonds laat het Filmarchief jaarlijks toe films van de teloorgang te redden.

Myriam Garfunkel left us about twenty years ago. She was a film critic and regular visitor of the Film museum. Shortly after her death, her family set up a fund for film restorations. Each year this fund, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation, allows the Film Archive to save films from destruction.

En mai 2000, Hadjithomas et Joreige apprennent que la copie de leur premier long métrage Autour de la maison rose, présentée au Yémen dans le cadre d’un festival nomade, a été perdue. Partis à sa recherche, et dans l’espoir d’y retourner pour terminer l’enquête, ils seront arrêtés dans leur projet par les événements du 11 septembre 2001. Film essai, Le Film perdu se réalisera avec les images précieuses des repérages, s’écrivant au montage et intégrant les absences narratives. Le film questionne, dans cette partie du monde, autant la représentation de l’image que le statut d’artiste des cinéastes.

Ze gaan ernaar op zoek en hopen naar Jemen terug te keren om hun zoektocht te voltooien, maar de gebeurtenissen van 11 september blazen het project af. The Lost Film, een filmessay, wordt gerealiseerd met de kostbare beelden van de locaties, en wordt gecreëerd tijdens de montage, waarbij de ontbrekende stukken van het verhaal geïntegreerd worden. De film stelt zowel de representatie van het beeld als de kunstenaarsstatus van de filmmakers – in het Midden-Oosten – in vraag.

In May 2000, Hadjithomas and Joreige learned that a copy of their first feature film, Around The Pink House from 1999, presented in Yemen as part of a nomadic festival, had been lost. They went in search of it hoping to return to Yemen to complete the investigation, yet 9/11 blocked their project. The Lost Film, a film essay, will be realised with the precious images of locations, and was created in the editing room, integrating narrative absences in doing so. The film challenges the representation of the image as well as the filmmakers’ artist status – in this part of the world.

Ils retracent l’aventure oubliée, aux allures surréalistes, d’un projet de fusée scientifique mené dans les années 1960 par un groupe d’étudiants de l’université arménienne de Beyrouth. À la recherche des documents, photos et films pratiquement disparus, et face à l’absence du projet dans la mémoire et l’imaginaire collectifs et individuels, les artistes racontent aussi ces années de panarabisme, le déclin du projet spatial après la guerre de 1967 imposé par Israël et les transformations du monde arabe.

De film weerspiegelt het belang dat Hadjithomas en Joreige hechten aan de geschiedenis die zich in de marge van de officiële geschiedenis afspeelt – alsook, in hun artistieke benadering, aan archieven. Ze sporen het vergeten avontuur op van het wetenschappelijke raketproject dat in de jaren 1960 werd aangegaan door een groep studenten van de Armeense universiteit in Beiroet, een avontuur met surrealistische allures. The film reflects the importance Hadjithomas and Joreige attach to history taking place in the margins of official history – as well as, in their artistic approach, to archives. They trace the forgotten adventure of the rocket scientist project conducted in the 1960s by a group of students of the Armenian university in Beirut, an adventure with surrealist allures. The artists are in search of documents, virtually disappeared photos and films, which confront them at the same time with the project’s absence from collective as well as individual memories and imaginings. At the same time, they also tell about the years of pan-Arabism – until its decline in 1967, imposed by Israel – and the transformations in the Arab world.

A Perfect Day, geconstrueerd rond twee verhaallijnen die elkaar kruisen, vertelt een verhaal geïnspireerd door dat van Khalil Joreige, via dat van zijn nonkel, een van de 17.000 tijdens de oorlog ‘vermiste’ Libanezen, en de geschiedenis van de jeugd van Beiroet, waar Hadjithomas en Joreige op dat moment (in 2005) zelf deel van uitmaakten. A Perfect Day, constructed around two different intersecting narrative lines, tells a story inspired by that of Khalil Joreige, through that of his uncle, who was among the 17,000 Lebanese who were reported missing during the war, and the history of the youth of Beirut of which both Hadjithomas and Joreige were a part at that moment (in 2005). Between fiction and documentary, the filmmakers follow their protagonist directly to the heart of the city, without historic ‘reconstruction’, and make contemporary Beirut, between ruins and building sites, the centre of the film.

Centré autour de Canyon Cinema, une des plus importantes coopératives de distribution de films indépendants, d’avant-garde, underground ou expérimentaux – co-fondée à San Francisco par les cinéastes Bruce Baillie et Chick Strand (tous deux mis à l’honneur par ce programme) – la scène West Coast dénote par sa remarquable diversité de styles et de sujets, elle aura été l’un des principaux acteurs du renouveau dans le cinéma américain.

En 1961, Bruce Baillie et Chick Strand fondent Canyon Cinema, dont l’objectif initial est de rassembler un public et d’établir des liens « entre les gens et ce qui se passait » (Bruce Baillie). Bruce Baillie and Chick Strand founded Canyon Cinema in 1961.

The original purpose of Canyon Cinema was to bring people together, to establish a connection “ between the people and what was happening ” (Baillie). They organized screenings of experimental, documentary, and narrative films in East Bay backyards and community centers. Acting in response to a lack of public venues for independent movies, they were part of a wider explosion in American avant-garde film. The era was one of social idealism and communal energy, and the films they showcased boldly embraced purely cinematic visual expression and cultural critique.

RITUALS INVOLVING : FILMS BY CHICK STRAND CURATED BY MARK TOSCANO

Cartoon Le Mousse de Chick Strand s’ouvre sur un intertitre qui le présente ainsi : « Rituels et méditation de lumière pure prisonnière d’une image ridicule ». Cette description poétique et drôle, et en même temps très sérieuse, pourrait tenir de définition plus large de la sensibilité et de la pensée qui animent les films de Chick Strand (1931-2009).

Après la création et le développement de Canyon Cinema avec Bruce Baillie et Ernest Callenbach au début des années soixante, Chick Strand, trentenaire et mère de deux enfants, s’installe à Los Angeles où elle suit les cours de cinéma ethnographique à UCLA. Un extraordinaire corpus de films va voir le jour, de ses premières expérimentations visuelles et de sa poétique psychédélique, jusqu’à de complexes films-collages, en passant par des films ethnographiques poétiques/surréalistes. Plusieurs fils rouges traversent son œuvre : la sensualité, le rituel, la survie, la force et le désir féminins, la moralité, l’humanisme, l’autobiographie, ce qui nous unit et nous sépare, ce qui nous fascine et nous repousse.

En deux séances, il est difficile de rendre compte de la profondeur et de l’éclat de Chick Strand, cinéaste et théoricienne du cinéma. Mais on y trouve certains de ses plus grands films, dont le chefd’œuvre Soft Fiction, l’intense et énigmatique Loose Ends, et l’hyper-sensuel Artificial Paradise.

Na haar ervaringen met de ontwikkeling van de toonaangevende Canyon Cinema in het begin van de jaren 1960, samen met Bruce Baillie en Ernest Callenbach, verhuist Chick Strand naar Los Angeles. Ze is alleenstaande moeder van twee kinderen, midden dertig en gaat er aan de graduate school van UCLA studeren, meer bepaald in hun etnografisch filmprogramma. Geleidelijk aan ontvouwt zich een buitengewoon oeuvre, vanaf haar vroege experimenten met beeldmanipulatie en feestelijke en poëtische psychedelia, over complexe en dubbelzinnige collagewerken, tot haar opmerkelijke poëtisch/surrealistische etnografische films, die lak hebben aan regels. Doorheen haar hele oeuvre zijn er terugkerende thema’s – zoals sensualiteit, rituelen, overleven, vrouwelijke kracht en verlangen, moraliteit, menselijkheid, autobiografie, dat wat ons verenigt, wat ons scheidt, wat ons boeit, wat ons afstoot.

Het is niet gemakkelijk om het hele scala van Chick Strands kunnen als briljant filmmaakster en audiovisueel denker te vatten in slechts twee programma’s. Hier worden alvast enkele van haar beste films getoond, waaronder haar meesterwerk Soft Fiction, het intense en raadselachtige Loose Ends, en het hypersensuele Artificial Paradise.

Chick Strand’s film Cartoon Le Mousse begins with a title describing it as “ Rituals involving the meditation of pure light trapped in a ridiculous image ”. This description, poetic and funny and in a way deadly serious, could perhaps stand for a larger philosophy and sensibility which permeates the unforgettable films of Chick Strand (1931-2009).

Following her experiences in developing the seminal Canyon Cinema with Bruce Baillie and Ernest Callenbach in the early ‘60s, Chick Strand relocated to Los Angeles as a single mother of two in her mid-thirties to attend graduate school at UCLA in their ethnographic film program. An extraordinary body of work gradually unfolded, from her early experiments with image manipulation and a celebratory and poetic psychedelia, to her complex and ambiguous collage pieces, to her remarkable and rule-breaking poetic/surrealist ethnographic films. Threads run throughout, including notions of sensuality, ritual, survival, female strength and desire, morality, humanity, autobiography, what unites us, what separates us, what fascinates us, what repels us.

It’s a difficult task to express the full breadth of Chick Strand’s brilliance as a filmmaker and audiovisual thinker in only two programs, but contained here are some of her greatest films, including the masterpiece Soft Fiction, the intense and enigmatic Loose Ends, and the hyper-sensual Artificial Paradise.

Dans la description qu’elle fait de Elasticity, Chick Strand note : « Trois états mentaux qui m’intéressent : l’amnésie, l’euphorie, et l’extase. L’amnésie, c’est de ne pas savoir qui vous êtes et le vouloir désespérément. J’appelle cela “la Nuit blanche”. L’euphorie, c’est de ne pas savoir qui vous êtes et ne pas s’en soucier. C’est “le Rêve de la méditation”. L’extase, c’est savoir précisément qui vous êtes et ne pas s’en soucier. J’appelle cela “la Mémoire du futur”. » Les cinq films qui composent cette séance démontrent la complexe interaction des « trois états mentaux » de Chick Strand tels qu’exprimés dans ses films : ils ne sont pas traités de manière exclusive, et peuvent représenter une idée de l’existence, de notre conscience et notre compréhension du monde et de nous-mêmes par l’intermédiaire des images que nous créons.

In her description of Elasticity, Chick Strand wrote : “ There are three mental states that are interesting : amnesia, euphoria and ecstasy. Amnesia is not knowing who you are and wanting desperately to know. I call this the White Night. Euphoria is not knowing who you are and not caring. This is the Dream of Meditation.

Ecstasy is knowing exactly who you are and still not caring. I call this the Memory of the Future. ” These five films demonstrate the complex interaction of Chick’s “ three mental states ” as expressed in her films : how they are not mutually exclusive, and how they may represent a template for existence, for our awareness and understanding of the world and ourselves through the images we make.

La survie et le désir sont deux thèmes récurrents dans l’œuvre de Chick Strand, et sont souvent traités de pair dans un entrelacement inattendu. C’est dans l’extraordinaire Soft Fiction que cette relation entre survie et désir est sans doute explorée de façon la plus riche et remarquable. Une série d’épisodes reliés de manière conceptuelle, évoque des histoires à la première personne impliquant différentes femmes, et créant un tissu complexe de provocations et d’ambiguïtés.

Autres illustrations de ces thèmes, deux de ses plus beaux et obsédants courts métrages. Artificial Paradise est un des films les plus évocateurs qui ait été tournés sur le sujet du désir, alors que dans l’hypnotique Kristallnacht s’engage une danse inattendue entre la beauté de l’existence et son inévitable envers, l’horreur de la souffrance.

Presented in partnership with

Survival and desire are two very commonly recurring themes throughout Chick Strand’s work, often working simultaneously in an unusual interwoven relationship. This is most richly and brilliantly explored in her amazing film Soft Fiction, in which a series of conceptually linked episodes involving first-person narratives by various women creates a complex empathic web of thoughtful provocations and ambiguities. Further illuminating these themes are two of her most haunting and beautiful shorts.

Artificial Paradise is one of the more evocative films ever created on the subject of sensual longing, while the hypnotic Kristallnacht engages in an unusual dance between the beauty of existence and its inevitable obverse, the horror of suffering.

Overleven en verlangen zijn twee zeer vaak terugkerende thema’s in het werk van Chick Strand, die vaak gelijktijdig aan het werk zijn, in een ongewone, verstrengelde relatie.

De vruchtbaarste, meest briljante verkenning hiervan is het verbazingwekkende Soft Fiction, waarin een reeks conceptueel gelinkte episodes met verhalen van verschillende vrouwen (gebracht in de ik-persoon) een complex empathisch web weeft van bedachtzame provocaties en dubbelzinnigheden. Bien que nombre d’entre eux parle du contraste entre une côte Est cool et une côte Ouest chaleureuse, un style « West Coast » unique n’a pourtant jamais vraiment existé. En ce sens, ce programme relève un peu de la fiction. Les notions classiques du California Dreamin’ et d’une côte Ouest excentrique, d’une poésie libre et vagabonde, ont inspiré ce programme éclectique qui s’articule autour du fantasme d’une identité cinématographique propre au Golden State.

THE WEST COAST / ALCHEMY IN THE GOLDEN STATE – 75’

Maints cinéastes qui ont commencé dans les années 1960 ont évoqué une divergence de sensibilité entre les deux côtes : l’Est et l’Ouest avaient des intérêts différents, et l’esthétique et les concepts cinématographiques n’étaient pas les mêmes. Veel filmmakers die in de jaren 1960 opkwamen, hadden het over een radicaal verschillende gevoeligheid tussen Oost- en Westkust, zoals dat ook weerspiegeld wordt in de aanpak van de respectieve filmmakers en de esthetische en conceptuele strategieën van hun films. In een interview uit 1978 had filmmaker Robert Nelson uit San Francisco het over het tonen van zijn films in New York.

Hij zei: ‘Toen ik daar aankwam, leek [mijn] film in de context van dat formalisme in New York (...) als iets waar een zigeuner mee kwam aandraven op een deken en dan op het zand uitrolde als een hoop harige handgemaakte objecten die daar maar wat lagen.’

Hoewel velen verwijzen naar een toenmalig contrast – East Coast ‘cool’ vs. West Coast ‘warm’ – heeft een uniforme ‘West Coast’-stijl nooit echt bestaan. Dit programma is dan misschien eerder een soort fictie, waarbij de klassieke begrippen ‘California Dreamin’ en excentrieke, free-flowing West Coast-poëzie de inspiratiebronnen vormen en alles draait rond de welbekende fantasie van een filmische ‘Golden State’-identiteit.

Many filmmakers who emerged in the 1960s have spoken of an East Coast/West Coast division of sensibility, as reflected in the approaches of the filmmakers and the aesthetic and conceptual strategies of their films. In a 1978 interview, San Francisco filmmaker Robert Nelson spoke of showing films in New York, saying, “ Once I got there, [my] film looked to me in the context of that formalism in New York… like something a gypsy brought in on a blanket and rolled out on the sand, like a bunch of hairy handmade objects that were all sort of laying there. ” Though many refer to an East Coast cool vs. West Coast warm contrast of the time, a uniform “ West Coast ” style has never really existed. This programme is then something of a fiction, perhaps. The classic notions of California Dreamin’ and an eccentric West Coast, free-flowing poetry were inspirations for this eclectic program themed on the notion of a familiar fantasy of a Golden State cinematic identity.

Suite California, le chef-d’œuvre de Robert Nelson, est un film plein de profondeur, de perspicacité, d’humour et d’intelligence, Nelson étant alors au sommet de ses intentions formelles, et en même temps à son degré le plus élevé de subjectivité et de générosité émotionnelle. Initialement, le projet était de faire un film bien plus long, un carnet de route en plusieurs parties, à travers la grande variété culturelle et géographique de la Californie, le tout, vu, modifié et transformé par le prisme subjectif des expériences et souvenirs du cinéaste. Les deux parties qui forment cette séance, et couvrent la Californie du Sud et la Bay Area, reflètent ce vaste et imprévisible territoire dans lequel se confrontent l’approche personnelle d’un lieu et le lieu lui-même.

Bien que les deux films soient traversés de part en part de cet humour propre aux œuvres de Robert Nelson, ils sont également empreints d’une profonde réflexion et d’une intériorité qui révèlent l’expérience subjective qui lie le cinéaste à sa terre natale, ainsi que la place qui y est la sienne.

The project was originally intended as a much longer, multi-part travelogue traversing the wide cultural and geographical diversity of California, all of it framed, modified, and distorted through the subjective lens of Nelson’s own experiences and memories.

The two completed parts, covering Southern California and the Bay Area, trace the vast and unpredictable area between a rich personal reading of a place and the place itself. Although both works feature Nelson’s characteristic brilliant humour throughout, they are also deeply reflective and filled with unexpected, revelatory insight about the subjective experience of his home state, and his own place in it.

Aux États-Unis, le concept de company town s’applique à une ville dominée par et dépendante d’une profession, généralement au détriment des citoyens/travailleurs. À sa façon, Los Angeles est une company town, l’industrie du divertissement étant particulièrement importante en matière d’emploi. Si l’on pense à l’intérêt qu’a suscité le cinéma expérimental et d’avant-garde à New York, Londres, ou San Francisco, celui produit à Los Angeles n’a pas attiré l’attention qu’il mérite. Beaucoup pensent en effet qu’il n’existe pas de culture du cinéma expérimental dans cette ville réputée d’abord pour son industrie cinématographique. Et pourtant, pendant plusieurs décennies, Los Angeles a vibré au rythme du cinéma d’avant-garde, et sans doute, justement, à cause de l’omniprésence de l’industrie. Dans ce programme, composé essentiellement de films restaurés par l’Academy Film Archive, sont rassemblés quelques films de l’avant-garde de Los Angeles exprimant une conscience et un engagement pour le media cinéma, mais qui s’intéressent aussi aux enjeux politiques sous-jacents à l’industrie cinématographique et à la représentation cinématographique en général.

In de Verenigde Staten verwijst het begrip ‘company town’ naar een plaats die gedomineerd en gedefineerd wordt door – en afhankelijk is van – een specifiek bedrijf, wat meestal ten koste gaat van de burgers/werknemers.

Hier wordt het begrip ironisch gebruikt: Los Angeles is natuurlijk in sommige opzichten een soort ‘bedrijfsstad’, in die zin dat de entertainmentindustrie er extreem aanwezig is als vorm van werkgelegenheid. THE WEST COAST / COMPANY TOWN – 78’

In the U.S., the concept of a “ company town ” refers to a town which is dominated by, dependent on, and defined by a specific corporate employer, usually to the detriment of the citizens/workers. Used ironically here, Los Angeles is of course in some ways like a company town, in that the entertainment industry is extremely present as a mode of employment. Because the history of the Los Angeles cinematic avant-garde has been only very minimally written about when compared to that of New York, London, or San Francisco, many people assume there is not much of an experimental film culture or history, perhaps due to the presence of the industry. On the contrary, there has for many decades been a massive and thriving cinematic avant-garde in Los Angeles, at least in part because of the industry. This wide-ranging program, composed mostly of restored prints from the Academy Film Archive, includes films from the Los Angeles avant-garde which suggest an awareness of and engagement with not just the film medium, but the underlying politics of the film industry and cinematic representation in general.

ASIAN EXPERIMENTAL CINEMA

Ce programme emprunte son titre au film ABCD, irrévérencieux et puissant court métrage d’animation du fameux artiste philippin Roxlee. Il présente un panel éclectique de cinéastes et vidéastes asiatiques préoccupés par le questionnement des formes conventionnelles de représentation et cherchant à inventer de nouvelles manières de voir et de comprendre la culture.

Expérimentant dans le champ de l’animation, du found footage ou du montage, ou innovant radicalement dans le cadre du cinéma narratif ou documentaire, ces cinéastes font écho dans leurs films aux relations complexes qu’ils entretiennent avec le cinéma et la pratique artistique. En considérant l’hétérogénéité culturelle et la relation particulière qui se tissent en Asie entre l’individu et la communauté ou le politique, ce programme pose un regard sur les complexités esthétiques et sociopolitiques du cinéma expérimental au sein du continent asiatique, vaste et contrasté.

En 2014, le festival Experimenta India (Bangalore) en collaboration avec la Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology (Inde) et le Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media, University of Westminster (Royaume-Uni) a mis sur pied à Bangalore la manifestation Comparing Experimental Cinemas, un symposium international consacré aux pratiques cinématographiques expérimentales. Cette rencontre fut le point de départ de Experimental Cinema in Asia Network (ECAN), un réseau d’échanges et de soutiens entre praticiens et chercheurs d’Indonésie, du Japon, de Hong Kong, de Malaisie, de Nouvelle-Zélande, de Corée du Sud, de Thaïlande, du Vietnam, des Philippines et d’Inde. Motivé par le besoin d’établir les termes de l’inclusion des images en mouvement non occidentales dans le circuit international de distribution et d’expositions, ECAN se propose de cartographier et de théoriser les histoires, les modes et les régionalismes des pratiques cinématographiques expérimentales en Asie.

Dit programma ontleent zijn titel aan de oneerbiedige en intense animatiefilm ABCD van de legendarische Filippijnse kunstenaar-filmmaker Roxlee. Het toont, in een eclectische mix, kunstenaars uit Azië die de confrontatie aangaan met conventionele representatievormen en die nieuwe manieren bedenken om cultuur te bekijken en te begrijpen.

Door de culturele verscheidenheid te bekijken en de bijzondere relatie die in de regio bestaat tussen het zelf en de begrippen ‘gemeenschap’ en ‘politieke groep’, biedt dit programma een blik op de esthetische en sociaal-politieke complexiteit van experimenteel filmmaken binnen de enorm uitgebreide en diverse Aziatische context.

Taking its title from the irreverent and powerful animation film ABCD by the legendary Filipino artist and filmmaker Roxlee, this programme is an eclectic showcase of artists from Asia who are concerned with challenging conventional forms of representation, and devising new ways of seeing and understanding culture.

From experiments in animation, found footage and stylised montage, to radical innovations with narrative and documentary forms, these filmmakers expose the complex cultural relationships they share with filmmaking as an artistic practice. By considering the cultural heterogeneity and the particular relationship between selves and the concepts of ‘community’ and ‘politicality’ in the region, this programme offers a view into the aesthetic and socio-political complexities of experimental filmmaking within the vast and diverse context of Asia.

In 2014, Experimenta India, in collaboration with the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, India, and the Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media, University of Westminster, U.K. hosted ‘Comparing Experimental Cinemas’, an international symposium on experimental moving image practices in Bangalore. This symposium inaugurated the Experimental Cinema in Asia Network (ECAN) of exchange and support amongst moving image art practitioners, curators, academics and researchers from Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and India. Motivated by the need to re-establish the terms of inclusion of non-western moving image in exhibition and distribution, ECAN proposes to map and theorize histories, modes and the regionality of experimental moving image practices across localities in Asia.

In 2014 was Experimenta India gastheer van ‘Comparing Experimental Cinemas’. Het internationaal symposium rond experimentele filmpraktijken was een samenwerking tussen de Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology (Bangalore) en het Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media van de University of Westminster en vond plaats in Bangalore.

Het symposium vormde ook de inhuldiging van het Experimental Cinema in Asia Network (ECAN) voor de uitwisseling en onderlinge ondersteuning van filmbeoefenaars en -onderzoekers uit Indonesië, Japan, Hong Kong, Maleisië, Nieuw-Zeeland, Zuid-Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, de Filippijnen en India. Le village de Kucheipadar, dans l’État d’Odisha, possède un gisement de bauxite qui, depuis la libéralisation économique de l’Inde, a été à l’origine d’un violent conflit entre les aborigènes Adivasis et une entreprise minière. Les chants y ont permis d’articuler entre elles des formes créatives et des structures politiques qui ont guidé le mouvement de résistance à Kashipur de son stade subalterne à la solidarité – puis à la dissolution. Le film combine l’enregistrement de chansons, de la vie agricole et villageoise et d’un meeting politique pour improviser des liens entre voix, musique, silence, son et bruit.

Het dorp Kucheipadar in Odisha is rijk aan het mineraal bauxiet, waardoor het sinds de economische liberalisering van India het voorwerp is geweest van gewelddadige conflicten tussen de autochtone Adivasi en de mijnbouwonderneming Kashipur. In de liederen die gezongen worden, vinden we de creatieve vormen en politieke structuren van de verzetsbeweging terug: van ondergeschikt-zijn, over solidariteit, tot de uiteindelijke ontbinding. De film verweeft inspanningen om liederen op te nemen alsook het leven op het veld, het dorpsleven en een politieke bijeenkomst, en improviseert zo een verbinding tussen stem, muziek, stilte, geluid en lawaai.

Kucheipadar village in Odisha is a bauxite-rich block that since India’s economic liberalisation has been the subject of violent conflict between Adivasis and a mining venture. The singing of songs has come to articulate creative forms and political structures that steered the Kashipur resistance movement from subalternity, through solidarity and into dissolution. The film interweaves the efforts to record song, farming, village life and a political meeting to improvise a junction between voice, music, silence, sound and noise.

In Malwani in Mumbai kunnen de meeste jongens carrom spelen en over de hele sloppenwijk zijn er carromclubs. De elfjarige Imraan zorgt voor zo’n club. Een glimp van Imraans leven op zijn kleine planeet.

Espérant envoyer un message dans le passé en équipant sa caméra pour filmer à travers l’image du poète José Rizal imprimée sur les billets philippins, Ermitano joue avec les limites de différents points de vue : celui de Rizal, celui de la politique philippine, celui de la caméra, le sien, et le nôtre.

This irreverent parody of science-fiction films is less a documentary than a marvel. A humorous meditation on time, politics, and point of view in cinema. Hoping to send a message back in time by equipping the camera to shoot through Rizal’s portrait on Philippine money, Ermitano plays with the boundaries of different points of view : Rizal’s, that of Philippine politics, the camera’s, the filmmaker’s, and ours.

Ailleurs, il y a longtemps, une femme a quitté sa forêt, qu’elle aspire aujourd’hui à retrouver, ainsi que son défunt mari. Ses désirs se manifestent dans ses rêves qui sont déclenchés par la dernière mangue de la saison.

Twee technici die voor het departement bosbouw werken, lopen door een bos. Ze plaatsen warmtegevoelige camera’s om ‘s nachts dierlijke activiteiten te documenteren. De mannen komen uit twee verschillende staten, Tamil Nadu en Kerala, en het bos ligt op de grens van die twee staten. Elders is een vrouw, lang geleden, weg van een bos gaan wonen. Ze verlangt naar haar overleden man en ook naar het bos, wat tot uiting komt in haar dromen, die uitgelokt worden door de laatste mango van het seizoen.

Two technicians from the forest department walk through a forest, setting up heat sensitive cameras to document animal activities in the night. The men are from two different states, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, as the forest lies on the border of the two states.

Somewhere else, a woman has moved away from a forest a long time ago. She yearns for her dead husband and also the forest.

Her desires are manifested in her dreams that are triggered by the last mango of the season.

The screening rooms open 15 minutes before the start of a screening.

Entrance is no longer possible once the screening has started. CINEMATEK closes once the last screening has ended.
