WELCOME TO THE HORIZON SERIES LIVE! We are a group of storytellers from vastly different places around the world. It has been eight long months since The Garneau Block had to be postponed on the eve of its opening in the Maclab Theatre due to COVID-19. During this pandemic pause, we have been hard at work with Daryl, Chantell, and all the staff at the Citadel, imagining new ways that we can continue to tell stories and connect with audiences. With the Horizon Series LIVE!, it is our priority to showcase stories that are not only important to us, but are reflective of the rich and varied lives and experiences of the community we so proudly call home, and to showcase them on the Shoctor stage. The result of all that work is in front of you now.
A BRIMFUL OF ASHA
In these challenging times, the sharing and celebrating of BIPOC voices is more important than ever. The stories we tell shape how we both see and know the world around us, and we hope these shows inspire, move, and touch you as they have us. Tonight, we are so excited to be sharing the first of three diverse productions in this Series: A Brimful of Asha. Thank you for coming. We couldn’t be more proud to share this with you.
ENJOY THE SHOW! Tai Amy Grauman, Mieko Ouchi, and Helen Belay CITADEL THEATRE’S ASSOCIATE ARTISTS

THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US TODAY. It is difficult to describe all of the emotions we are feeling as we welcome these small live performances back to our stages. We are excited, nervous, hopeful and just so, so grateful. Our stages went dark March 12, with two hours’ notice, and as we sent over a hundred artists and team members home, our hearts were heavy. Our industry was the first to be shut down and many of our team members will be among the last to return to work. And yet, throughout the spring and summer we created art; online, and out of doors, in our classrooms and on Zoom. And now, we are starting live in person performances. Slowly, carefully, and much smaller than we are all used to. But we are here. WE ARE HERE BECAUSE OF YOU. We are here because we believe that the arts are an essential service to our community. For over 50 years, we’ve been telling stories on our stages that challenge us, make us laugh, get us dancing in the aisles, and leave us talking about them long after we see them. Personally, some of my most vivid memories are in this building, from the wonder of attending a student matinee for the first time when I was in Grade 5, to seeing my own daughter perform in A Christmas Carol last year. That feeling, memories like these, they’re vitally important to us as Edmontonians. They’re a huge part of what keeps our community together. WE ARE HERE BECAUSE OF YOU. You are helping us weather the storm. By coming tonight, by making donations, by buying subscriptions and holding on to tickets for postponed shows. We need your help to see another 50 years of these stories. The pandemic
limits so many ways in which we’re able to sustain our organization: Of the 681 seats around you, we can only seat 100 of them. Typically we’d see upwards of two dozen productions on our stages in a year, this year we are hoping to be able to deliver six. Our Foote Theatre School team has adapted to smaller, distanced class sizes; our Events team has had 80 percent of their revenue cancelled or postponed; and our tenants are operating in a reduced manner, if they have survived at all. All of that amounts to over 60% of our annual revenue gone, overnight. In the middle of all this, we have so much to be grateful for. Our public and corporate sponsors have shown that they believe in our mission. Our fantastic community of donors has supported initiatives like the Shoctor Hearing Loop, our BIPOC Artist Fund, and our Bridge to the Future. Patrons have booked our outdoor Road Shows during the summer, supporting our artists. And of course, you, today, joining us for one of our first live performances in seven months. I can’t thank you enough for that. I hope you enjoy A Brimful of Asha. Afterwards, I hope you’ll consider joining us for the rest of the Horizon Series LIVE!, making a donation, or even just telling a friend about the awesome show you just saw. Every little bit of support goes a mile in keeping live theatre alive in the heart of our fair city.
Wishing you all the best,
Chantell Ghosh • Executive Director

WELCOME!
You’re one of the first audiences in the Shoctor Theatre now equipped with a cutting-edge Hearing Loop system! It’s a huge milestone in our ongoing work towards universal accessibility. It wouldn’t have been possible without a significant donation from the Shoctor Family, support from our friends at Hearing Loop Canada, and all our community donors who believe in arts for everyone. With your support, we can continue making sure our theatre doors are truly open to all!
DIRECTOR’S NOTES Families are complicated. As a filmmaker and playwright myself, who has written and created many projects around my own family, I know this truth all too well. But I also know they are full of deep love, unspeakable care and a huge desire to see the shared family story and legacy carry on. To be taken up by the next generation. Which brings us back to complicated… right? For me, with this play, Ravi has created a beautifully human glimpse into the Jain family, and his own knotty but delicious relationship with his mom – Asha. Their dynamic sparring over the central idea of “marrying and being settled”, either with a partner of your own choosing or one that is chosen for you by your family, is one that many of us will recognize from our own lives. His brilliance as a theatre artist is to show it all, warts and all, and to draw us into this very specific and hilarious story. Of a mom and a son… and a dad… and a heck of a lot of aunties and uncles and grandfathers and friends… all doing their best to help work it out. It has been an incredible honor to have been asked by Daryl to direct one of the Citadel’s first dips back into live performance here in the Shoctor. And I have been so pleased to do it with this talented, generous and patient team of artists and technicians. We have laughed our heads off, shed a few tears and cheered when performance, design and tech came together to create some magical moments. Most of all we have simply enjoyed the incredible sensation of being back at work… in a place that feels like home. Like a family. So from all of us… whether you are joining us in person or online, welcome back to the theatre! And enjoy the show,
MIEKO OUCHI

We SHARE everything we have, because more artists mean more stories. We PROVOKE change because we believe art should be for everyone. We push boundaries, build community, and find new ways. We represent Toronto, at home and on the world stage. Founded in 2007, we are growing rapidly, led by Ravi Jain, Kelly Read, and Miriam Fernandes.
