All that and more are available to City Heights youths, who once again are awash in opportunities to stay busy this summer. “It gets pretty active here this time of year,” said Cathy Berardi, City Heights Recreation Center director. “We have a lot of wonderful programs. A lot of them are free, and we try to keep the other ones affordable for families and the kids.” One of the first things families should know is, yes, there is such a thing as a free lunch – and breakfast, too. Hoover seniors cash in on scholarships More than $700,000 awarded The rising cost of college tuition hasn’t deterred Hoover High School students from continuing their academic careers. At Senior Awards Night in June, 127 graduates celebrated receiving more than $700,000 in scholarships, which were topped by a $107,000 award to DeShawn Walker from the Reserve Officer Training Corps Program. This fall, Walker will be attending Howard University, a prestigious private institution in Washington, D.C., with an estimated annual expense of $43,000 for tuition and housing. It’s a price, Walker says, that most kids in the community are

the San Diego Unified School District and the city’s Park and Recreation Department, with funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, anyone under 18 can have nutritious meals daily while school is out. Breakfast and lunch will be available at Central Elementary School and Wilson Middle School from July 24 through Aug. 20. Crawford High School is serving meals from June 23 through Aug. 1. Hoover High School will be serving meals from July 29 through Aug. 12. In addition, Summer Fun Cafés will be operating at the City Heights Recreation Center, Colina del Sol Recreation Center and Azalea Recreation Center from July 22 through Aug. 22.
