By Hoa Quách Seventeen-year-old Diana Tamayo would be the first to tell you that many members of her extended family do not have the best of reputations. Some cousins were known at Hoover High School for their mischief. An uncle was convicted of a serious crime. The City Heights youth is blazing a new trail. “My parents are so proud of me,” said Tamayo, who recently returned from the renowned Ocean Leaders summer science program in Baja California. Tamayo was one of 22 students from City Heights to participate in the annual, intensive, research-based effort hosted by the Ocean Discovery Institute. They presented their findings and detailed their experiences to an audience of about 150 people during the nonprofit’s “Report to the Community” event Aug. 6 in La Jolla. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Tamayo said of her summer of studying in Baja. “It felt like I was in a dream.”

Igniting a passion for science Now in its 10th year, the Ocean Leaders program sends 20 or more students to Bahía de Los Ángeles in Baja California for the five-week science excursion. The students prepare for the trip south of the border by training in San Diego for 12 weeks, learning how to swim and conducting various research methods. This year, the students were divided into three research groups. One studied sea- and land-energy transfers. A second studied sustainable fisheries. A third worked on so-called “bycatch reduction,” which refers to fish that are caught unintentionally, thus contributing to the demise of their species. Aside from their research projects, students were given the opportunity to explore wetlands, swim with whale sharks and learn how to make sashimi. “They really feel like scientists during this program,” said Ocean Discovery Institute’s Science Education Coordinator Jimmy Pennise. “They’re able to ignite their passions for science.”

New bus line launches Oct. 12 An improved bus line with faster service between San Diego State University and downtown via City Heights is set to launch Oct. 12. The project takes Metropolitan Transit District Route 15 and turns it into what MTS and the San Diego Association of Governments, known as SANDAG, are calling Mid-City Rapid, a system complete with faster travel times, more frequent buses, synchronized traffic signals and new bus shelters. Construction on the 10-mile, limit-
ed-stop line got underway a year ago in July. SANDAG was planning to complete nearly all street improvements – such as new sidewalks and curb ramps, as well as the distinctive red Rapid stations – by the beginning of September. During the past two months, construction crews have focused their efforts on finishing the last two pairs of stations on El Cajon Boulevard at

La joven de City Heights está trazando un nuevo camino. “Mis padres están muy orgullosos de mi”, dijo Tamayo, quien recientemente participó en el reconocido programa científico de verano Ocean Leaders en Baja California. Tamayo fue una de las veintidós estudiantes de City Heights que participaron en la intensiva iniciativa anual, basada en investigaciones, que
organiza el Instituto Ocean Discovery. Línea de autobuses comenzará Oct. 12 Una mejor línea de autobuses que ofrece un servicio más rápido entre la Universidad San Diego State y el centro de la ciudad de San Diego, a través de City Heights, comenzará a operar el 12 de octubre. El proyecto tomó la Ruta 15 del Sistema Metropolitano de Transporte y la transformó en lo que MTS y la Asociación de Gobiernos de San Diego, conocida como SANDAG, llaman el Rapid de Mid-City, completo sistema que ofrece tiempos de traslado más rápidos, buses más frecuentes, semáforos sincronizados y nuevas paradas de autobús. La construcción de la línea de 10 millas con
paradas limitadas inició en julio del año pasado. SANDAG proyectaba terminar casi todas las mejoras a las calles—aceras nuevas y rampas en las aceras, por ejemplo, así como las distintivas estaciones rojas del Rapid—a principios de septiembre.
