Plans being set to turn City Heights green

Call it the greening of City Heights.

A new effort is underway to improve the environmental quality of this Mid-City community by capturing storm water and other runoff to help nourish thousands of new trees and getting more people to ride bicycles and walk along more aesthetically

pleasing sidewalks and streets.

Planning for the comprehensive effort is being financed through a $250,000 grant from the California Natural Resources Agency, said Michael Prinz, an associate planner with the city’s Development Services Department who has been involved in the project.

“The goal of the City Heights Urban Greening Plan is to create a system of green streetsthat would provide enhanced experi-

ences for pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users and create linkages between existing, planned and proposed community facilities, parks, and trails in adjacent canyons,” states the city’s grant application.

A dozen representatives from various business and community organizations have been meeting as a group known as the “Green Team” since October. Its task: to

personas adopten el uso de bicicletas y caminen a lo largo de aceras y calles que serán estéticamente más agradables.

La planificación de este esfuerzo integral será financiada gracias a una subvención de $250,000 de la Agencia de Recursos Naturales de California, dijo Michael Prinz, planificador asociado del Departamento de Servicios de Desarrollo de la ciudad quien está

El esfuerzo requiere de un sustancial aumento de la cantidad de árboles en la comunidad.

Las estrategias incluyen la identificación de un tipo o de un pequeño grupo de árboles que se pueden instalar para unificar los corredores clave. “Cada calle debe tratar de proporcionar una sensación visual consistente basada en la repetición de un tipo de árbol”, expresa un reporte preparado por KTU+A, firma de arquitectos de áreas verdes de San Diego que está encabezando el proyecto.

Pero esto implica más que estética. “Los árboles ahorran energía al proporcionar sombra”, de acuerdo al reporte de KTU+A. “La sombra de los árboles reduce la ganancia de calor y la absorción de luz solar. Puede reducir el costo de enfriar los edificios.” Y los árboles “pueden apoyar la viabilidad económica de las áreas comerciales creando un entorno atractivo para ir de compras”.

Las técnicas para colectar, reusar y purificar las aguas pluviales potencialmente pueden lograr que los entornos urbanos sean más auto sostenibles en términos del agua que se necesita para las áreas verdes.”

Jenny An, quien trabaja para KTU+A y es la coordinadora de extensión del proyecto, opina que “el Plan de Enverdecimiento Urbano de City Heights no solo se trata de embellecer la comunidad, también se trata de crear una comunidad más sostenible”.

El proyecto será financiado a través de la Proposición 84, una medida aprobada en el 2006 que autorizó casi $5.4 billones en bonos de obligación general para financiar una variedad de proyectos dirigidos a proteger los recursos naturales y las fuentes de suministro de agua.

La subvención que recibirá el Proyecto de Enverdecimiento Urbano no es la primera en beneficiar a City Heights proveniente de los fondos de la Proposición 84. Canyon restoration set

Ocean Discovery Institute invites City Heights residents to take part in a youth-led habitat restoration effort at Swan Canyon on April 27.

The Watershed Avengers event is expected to run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Watershed Avengers works to get youth, their families and their neighbors to do hands-on restoration activities. Swan Canyon provides myriad opportunities for recreation and is home to numerous species of plants and animals.

Those wishing to take part will meet at Hamilton Elementary, 2807 Fairmount Ave. The event will begin with an educational tour of the canyon, followed by opportunities to participate in restoration projects. Those projects will include panting vegetation native to the area, restoring walking trails and removing debris.

There also will be a special guest appearance from Little Tommy of the Jeff & Jer Showgram on KyXy 96.5 radio.

Lunch will be provided to all attendees and participants will be entered in a free raffle.

Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. Parking is available at Hamilton Elementary.

An April 6 `walk audit’ with interested residents will focus on discussing what barriers need to be removed from those corridors and what other improvements need to be made. A followup workshop is planned from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Metro Career Center, 3910 University Ave. The effort calls for substantially increasing the number of trees in the community. Strategies include identifying one type or a small number of trees that can be used to unify key corridors. “Individual streets should attempt to provide a consistent visual feel based on repeated tree type,” states a report prepared by KTU+A, a San Diego landscape architecture firm that is taking a lead in the project.

More than aesthetics are involved. “Trees save energy by providing shade,” the KTU+A report says. “Shade from trees reduces heat gain and sunlight absorption.

It can reduce building cooling costs.” And trees “can support the economic viability of a retail area by creating an attractive shopping environment.”

the planting area of a sidewalk zone at 50 feet intervals, there would be 15,849 trees in City Heights.”

Planting more trees and providing safer, greener routes between major destination points would result in “pleasant environment to encourage walking, jogging, hiking or biking,” the grant application says. The trees would be fed largely by stormwater and runoff, according to a KTU+A report.

“Storm water is a valuable resource as drought conditions in San Diego continue. Techniques of stormwater harvesting for reuse and purification can potentially make urban environments more self-sustaining in terms of water for landscaping.”

Jenny An works for KTU+A and serves as an outreach coordinator for the project. “The City Heights Urban Greening Plan is not just about making the community pretty,” said An, who serves as an outreach coordinator for the project. “We want to make it a more sustainable community.”

The money for the project comes from Proposition 84, a 2006 measure authorizing nearly $5.4 billion in general obligation bonds to fund a variety of projects aimed at protecting natural resources and water supplies.

The grant going to the Urban Greening Project is not the first time City Heights has benefitted from Proposition 84 funds. An ef-

fort to restore several City Heights canyons and connect them with a 5-mile loop trail secured a grant of $365,000 in 2012.

“The focus on greening plans in City Heights is the appropriate priority for our City because of the severe lack of green amenities, park areas, and inviting pedestrian infrastructure,” states a letter in support of the Urban Greening grant from Eric Bowlby, executive director of San Diego Canyonlands, the group that secured $365,000 grant for City Heights canyon improvements. “Building the proposed green infrastructure in City Heights will make significant advances toward building a more sustainable community.”

It was 6:30 in the morning and Jorge Palacios was in a hurry. He can’t miss the bus pulling away from the curb at 37th Street and University Avenue in City Heights. He jogged up to the coach and tapped on the door just as the bus started to move.

The door opened and he hopped in, greeting the driver with a, “Thank you, sir.”

This was just the first of a three-leg journey Palacios takes to get to class at Southwestern Community College four days a week.

This bus will deliver him at the trolley stop at C and 12th streets downtown. From there he rides the trolley south to Chula Vista, where he catches a crowded express line to campus.

A las 6:30 de la mañana Jorge Palacios se apresura.

Tiene que montarse en el autobús que se aleja de la acera en la Calle 37 y la Avenida University en City Heights. Corrió hacia el autobús y tocó la puerta justo cuando comenzaba a alejarse.

La puerta se abrió y entrando saludó al conductor con un “Gracias señor”.

Este es solo uno de los tres transportes que Palacios tiene que tomar para llegar a sus clases en Southwestern Community College cuatro días de la semana.

Este autobús lo deja en la parada del trolley entre las calles C y 12th, en el centro de la ciudad. Desde allí toma el trolley hacia el sur, en dirección a Chula Vista, en donde se monta en un repleto autobús expreso para llegar al campus.

Si todo marcha bien, puede tomarle unos 45 minutos completar la travesía. Pero algunos días puede tomarle el doble de tiempo.

Palacios está tratando de graduarse con un título asociado de paramédico. En el fondo lo que desea es estudiar medicina.

Este fue uno de esos días fáciles, ya que Palacios solo tenía una clase. Pero algunos días tiene dos clases y además tiene que trabajar su turno en SmashBurger en Hazard Center, lo que significa dos horas más en autobús y en el trolley para llegar a su trabajo.

Asha Mohmed is a City Heights resident, who came to the U.S. from Somali in the mid 1990s. She also is a member of the Mid-City CAN Access to Health Care Momentum Team.

She went to Sacramento on Feb. 20 through a grant from California Pan-Ethnic Health Network to visit state legislators and support an expansion of Medi-Cal benefits to those earning up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level in 2014. They visited state Assemblyman Rocky Chávez (R-Oceanside), state

Assemblyman Manuel V. Pérez (D-Coachella, Joshua Tree), state Sen. Marty Block (D-San Diego), state Assemblywoman Toni Atkins (DSan Diego) and state Assemblywoman Shirley Webber (D-San Diego). She described her trip through a Somali interpreter.

I

t was a great experience. This is very new to me. I met with a lot of great people around California who were facilitating discussions and sessions.

The reason that I went to Sacramento was because of the health care issue. We met with five individuals - different assembly members

Palacios is trying to earn an associate’s degree and become a paramedic. Ultimately, he said, he would like to go to medical school.

This was one of the easy days, as Palacios had but one class. Some days he has two courses and a shift at SmashBurger in Hazard Center, which can mean a twohour bus and trolley trip away.

“I have to like literally run from here to my classroom to the bus station,” he says.

“Sometimes the bus is there, sometimes not. Even though if you check the schedules and everything, it can just change. “ With a lengthy night shift at Smash Burger, Palacios sometimes doesn’t get home until 1 a.m.

Palacios moved to the United States from Mexico with his mother, father and brother four years ago. His father died in 2010 and the resulting stress and grief eventually tore apart Palacios’ relationships with his mother and brother. He moved out, packing his clothes into a gui-

I told them that health care is a necessity to life, and if someone doesn’t have access to health care then they can’t work. They can’t have a life. The first thing and the most important is to have good health. If they don’t have good health it is important to have an insurance card, or they can’t do anything about it.

So we were asking specifically to expand health care coverage for singles after age 26.

A lot of those people won’t be covered with health-care reform.

I felt very happy to be in a meeting with people. We were wel-

comed.

I kept sharing my personal story over and over again. The example that I shared is when I came to the United States (in 1996).

I have eight children. I felt very lucky to have health insurance and a home. I gave birth to a boy here in the U.S. He was born here, so he had health insurance.

What surprised me was that when he got older, he didn’t qualify for health care.

I also talked about my daughter. She didn’t have insurance. When she graduated from high school, she got pregnant, and when she gave birth, she owed $10,000 to the hospital.

ue una gran experiencia. Todo esto es nuevo para mí. Conocí a muchas excelentes personas alrededor de California que facilitaron discusiones y sesiones.

La razón por la que visité Sacramento fue el problema con la atención médica. Nos reunimos con cinco personas—diversos miembros de la Asamblea y miembros del Senado.

Les dije que la atención médica es una necesidad en nuestras vidas y que si alguien no tiene acceso a ella entonces no pueden trabajar. No pueden vivir. Lo primero y más importante es tener buena salud. Si no tenemos buena salud, es importante contar con un seguro de salud o no se puede hacer nada al respecto.

Por eso es que les solicitamos específicamente que expandan la cobertura de salud a las personas solteras mayores de 26 años. Muchos de ellos no están cubiertos por las reformas al sistema de salud.

Me siento muy contenta de haberme podido reunir con estas personas.

Compartí con ellos mi historia una y otra vez. Les di el ejemplo de cuando llegué a los Estados Unidos (en 1996). Tengo ocho hijos. Me siento muy afortunada de tener un seguro médico y un hogar. Uno de mis hijos nació aquí en los EE.UU. Él nació aquí así que cuenta con seguro médico. Lo que me sorprendió fue que cuando creció, ya no calificaba para recibir atención médica.

“I was just on the corner (thinking) ‘What am I supposed to do now? What should I do? Where do I go?’”

He was a junior in high school and he was homeless. He spent that night in a park and after that relied on friends and teachers for support.

“I was one, two, three days here, another day there. I was living, like, day by day,” he said.

Aside from a stint staying with an aunt, living day to day is how Palacios has spent much of the last two and a half years. But – he says having hope is the only way to weather his situation.

“I always have this mentality of ‘it could be worse’ and also ‘my situation can improve’ so, that always keeps me going.”

And his situation is improving. He is now staying with a friend. And his days of anxiously anticipating when the next bus or trolley might come recently came to an end.

The San Diego Unified School District has a team of traveling teachers who work with homeless students. Thanks to those teachers, Palacios was chosen to get a car through a National Auto Body Council program called Recycled Rides. Through the program, Palacios is the proud new owner of a silver Mazda 6 station wagon.

“How could we not do this?” says Michael Quinn, head of community relations for Caliber Collision, which helped get the car ready for Palacios. “I mean, this young man’s persevering and just really pushing past all the barriers and this one gift will help him.”

Caliber gives away one or two cars a

month through the Recycled Rides program, Quinn says, but the staff often doesn’t feel like the car is enough.

“There’s a lot of associates, a lot of these team members that kicked in money, that reached in their pocket for $20,” he says.

Those personal donations added up to gift cards, cash and a laptop that Palacios found when he opened the car’s trunk.

Without a computer of his own, Palacios has had to go to the library every time he needed to use the Internet.

When Palacios took the car for a test drive, he was more impressed by the people than the gifts they gave him.

“It’s pretty awesome just to meet all of these people that were helping me out a lot and I didn’t even know what their faces looked like,” he says.

The car will save him time, which Palacios says he’ll use to pick up one or two more courses in coming semesters. That could cut a year or more off his time to an associate’s degree. He says he’ll feel safer driving than waiting on the trolley platform at midnight after a closing shift.

“It’s like a sign saying that I’m doing things right and that I should keep on going,” he says.

EDUCATION Group working to end alcohol sales to minors

Underage drinking is a problem in San Diego and across the country. Studies show kids who took their first drink before they turned 18 are 65 percent more likely to become alcoholics as adults.

Research also shows parents play a significant role influencing their kids.

Hoover High School students Judith Uriostegui and Angelica Esparza are literally the poster kids of a Latino Youth Council campaign to prevent teens from getting alcohol at neighborhood markets.

“Basically we want to get the word out that it is illegal for adults to purchase alcohol for youth,” said Uriostegui, a member of the Latino Youth Council.

“So this is just another way of like approaching parents and like asking them to be aware if it’s legal or not, which it’s not,” said Esparza, who also is a member of the council.

The Latino Youth Council worked with businesses, law enforcement and elected officials in City Heights for a year to launch a campaign that includes a simple message on reusable bags. The message? Don’t serve alcohol to minors and don’t sell booze to adults

if they are buying for underage drinkers..

It’s not unusual for kids to wait outside a neighborhood market to convince an adult to buy alcohol.

“It all starts with us, if we are a responsible operator then we will avoid all the other problems out there,” said Mark Kassab, the owner of Murphy’s Market, who noted there are 10 schools within a 2½-mile radius of his store .

El Consejo Juvenil Latino trabajó con empresas, agencias de la ley y oficiales electos en City Heights durante un año para lanzar la campaña que incluye además un sencillo mensaje acerca del uso de bolsas reusables. ¿El mensaje principal? No suministrar alcohol a menores de edad y no vender alcohol a adultos si lo están comprando para menores de edad.

Es común que los niños esperen afuera del mercado del vecindario para tratar de convencer a los adultos para que les compren bebidas alcohólicas. “Comienza con nosotros mismos, si operamos responsablemente podremos evitar problemas”, dijo Mark Kassab, propietario de Murphy’s Market, quien añadió que existen 10 escuelas en un radio de 2½ millas de su tienda.

El Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Diego cuenta con un equipo de maestros viajeros que trabajan con los estudiantes sin hogar. Gracias a estos maestros, Palacios fue escogido para re-

cibir un auto a través de un programa del Consejo Nacional de Carrocerías de Automóviles llamado Recycled Rides. Gracias al programa, Palacios es el orgulloso dueño de un automóvil Mazda 6 de color plateado. “¿Cómo podemos no hacerlo?” dijo Michael Quinn, jefe del departamento de relaciones comunitarias de Caliber Collision, quien ayudó a preparar el automóvil para Palacios.

EDUCATION BRIEFS Getting ready for kindergarten

The calendar may say April, but it’s not too early to be thinking about enrolling your child in kindergarten next fall.

That’s the message from the San Diego Unified School District, which is pointing out that boys and girls who will celebrate their fifth birthday on or before Oct. 1 can start kindergarten this fall.

And several campuses are accepting early enrollment, enabling parents to complete the necessary forms and paperwork ahead of the start of school in September. Schools throughout the district are also conducting tours and some are even holding special events for next year’s kindergarten parents.

To enroll your child in school, parents or guardians must bring to campus an original birth certificate or passport, an original immunization record, and proof of residency. A utility bill, tax bill, military housing orders or a rental or lease agreement will suffice to prove a person’s residency.

Preparándose para el Kindergarten

Puede que estemos en abril, pero nunca es demasiado temprano para pensar en dónde va a matricular a su hijo para que asista a kindergarten el próximo otoño.

YMCA San Diego Urban Teacher Fellows Program

ollege can be an intimidating thought for some. The application process, financial aid and picking courses can be a mystery to those who know little or nothing about higher education. Fortunately, the YMCA has a program for those who are motivated to go to college, but just need that extra support to get there and finish.

The San Diego Urban Teacher Fellows program is a free, two-year program beginning this fall at San Diego City College that helps individuals between the ages of 17 and 21 complete their transfer requirements in liberal arts. Once the students complete their transfer requirements at City College, students are offered a guarantee transfer to San Diego State University where they can earn a bachelor’s degree and teaching credential.

San Diego Urban Teacher Fellows is a collaborative project with San

Diego Workforce Partnership, YMCA Youth & Family Services, San Diego City College, San Diego State University and The Children’s Initiative. The goal is to prepare economically disadvantaged youth for employment in after-school programs and to help them secure a college degree.

The Urban Teacher Fellows program offers financial aid assistance, tutoring, job placement assistance, help with transportation and more.

So if you are between 17 and 21 years old and will have earned a high school diploma or G.E.D. by June, meet low income requirements and want to start studying at City College in the fall, then contact us. Interested students are encouraged to attend an orientation at our office held every week. We encourage youth to bring along a parent or guardian if you are under 18.

Afortunadamente, el YMCA cuenta con un programa para aquellos motivados a asistir a la universidad y que necesitan ayuda extra para hacerlo y para terminar sus estudios.

El programa de Becarios Urban Teacher de San Diego es un programa gratuito de dos años de duración que inicia este otoño en el City College de San Diego y que ayuda a los jóvenes entre 17 y 21 años a cumplir con los requisitos para transferirse a una car-

rera en artes liberales. Cuando los estudiantes completen estos requisitos en City College, tienen garantizada la transferencia la Universidad Estatal de San Diego (SDSU) en donde pueden estudiar una licenciatura y obtener sus credenciales para ser maestros.

ou may have spotted several groups of youth taking photos around City Heights in recent weeks. They’re part of the Monroe Clark Middle School’s PhotoCity Club, a photography-based educational program run by The AjA Project.

Students came up with plenty of ideas for how to make City Heights more inviting for young people. When exploring how they can be part of positive change, answers ranged from cleaning up the canyons to establishing an arts center and adding more lighting at night.

Over the course of the program youth will present their findings and ideas to key City Heights stakeholders already working on these important topics and become part of the cooperative solutionmaking process.

“I would make a group center that people can spray paint,” said Juan Carlos, 13.

“Pondría aquí un centro grupal que la gente pueda pintar con pintura en aerosol”, dijo Juan Carlos, de 13 años.

A movement to provide City Heights youth with free bus passes is gaining momentum.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, District 9 City Councilmember Marti Emerald and school district Trustee Richard Barrera were among those attending a March 16 meeting of the MidCity CAN’s Improving Transportation in City Heights team who signed a giant card reading, “I pledge to support youth in City Heights by providing a free bus pass.”

Hoover High School Vice Principal Andy Trakas is among those behind the effort.

“We are firm believers that look, if a kid can get on a bus, that kid is going to avoid so many different instances where he has put himself at risk and he

is going to feel more confident in developing a behavioral routine of getting to school,” Trakas said. “Because all of that unknown stuff, if a kid is worried about gangs, if a young lady is worried about if a predator is out there, etc., etc., that equation is now taken out. Not entirely, because who knows what they might bump into on the bus, but, for the most part, 90 percent is.”

Emerald pledged to pressure the public transportation boards of which she is a member to act.

“I want you all to know as the mayor’s representative on the Metropolitan Transit Board of the Metropolitan Transit System – I will be pushing [them] to offer money up,” she said during the meeting held at Metro Villa Apartments. “Public transit is for the public.”

Un movimiento que lucha por proporcionar a la juventud de City Heights pases gratuitos para el autobús está ganando impulso.

Top-performing JROTC cadets from Hoover and Crawford high schools were invited to Washington, D.C., and Virginia for a special spring break seminar.

DeShawn Walker of Hoover High and Michelle Burlaza of Crawford High were invited to the Patriotic Education Seminar sponsored by the San Diego chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars. Walker and Burlaza were among nine top JROTC cadets from San Diego Unified campuses invited to attend the seminar.

The students were able to visit the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress and numerous other sites to gain greater awareness of our national history, monuments and museums. The students rank in the top 10 percent in academic, citizenship and leadership skills. They were selected to participate following interviews by members of the Military Order of the World Wars.

Applications are available for San Diego Unified’s before- and after-school program known as PrimeTime.

Crawford High shines at trial

Crawford High School student Luis Venegas was honored for his performance at the 7th annual San Diego County High School Mock Trial Competition. The event involved a mock trial in San Diego Superior Court about a recent hit-andrun case. Luis was honored as Outstanding Witness for the Defense.

Two Crawford High School mentors, Amy Hoffman and Shereen Charlick, were honored for their participation.

The mock trial competition places high school students in a simulated courtroom setting, where they assume the roles of lawyers and witnesses in a hypothetical case. Teams from six district high schools participated in the competition from Feb. 26 through March 2.

“Mock trials are designed to promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for the law, court procedures and the American judicial system,” said Karen Dalton, Superior Court spokesperson. “The competition also offers students a real-life opportunity to challenge and improve basic life skills such as critical thinking, reading, public speaking and advocacy for ideas.”

The event is organized by the San Diego County Bar Association and San Diego Superior Court, together with the Constitutional Rights Foundation and the San Diego Office of Education.

Preparatoria Crawford Sobresale durante Juicio

El estudiante de la Preparatoria Crawford, Luis Venegas fue felicitado por su desempeño durante el Simulacro de Juicio de la 7º Competencia Anual de las Preparatorias del Condado de San Diego. El evento incluyó un simulacro de juicio en la Corte Superior de San Diego que se trató de un caso reciente de atropello y fuga. Luis fue nombrado “Testigo Sobresaliente de la Defensa”.

Returning to her love of Ethopian cuisine

Aster Keleta arrived in San Diego in 1980. She soon settled in and began working to help other new arrivals from Ethiopia, a passion of hers that has continued on for over 30 years.

Aster was the only daughter among five children in her family. She worked in the kitchen with her mother preparing traditional Ethiopian meals. The family had a self-sufficient farm, so whatever was on the dinner table grew right in their backyard. With her background in and love of preparing traditional cuisine, Aster in 1982 opened the first Ethiopian restaurant in San Diego. It was called the Blue Nile and was located on Federal Avenue and 47th Street. Five years later she opened a second location in Pacific Beach.

The Blue Nile became more than a place for people to eat. New arrivals from Ethiopia considered it a gathering place to discuss their needs and to organize. Welcoming these people into her space and helping them became her ultimate passion.

Aster would leave her restaurant to pursue a career in the nonprofit world, while at the same time pursuing a master’s degree in education from SDSU. In the past 30 years, Aster has worked for numerous nonprofits agencies to aid, educate and develop leadership among the African refugees living in the United States.

With the stability she has gained in her professional career, she recently decided to plunge back into the restaurant business once again. Aster and her partner, Dr. Carrol Waymon, are now the new owners of Awash, an Ethiopian restaurant on El Cajon Boulevard at 50th Street.

Aster said Ethiopian cuisine has a unique flavor that keeps people coming back again and again. There is an astounding variety of fresh vegetables, including cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, collard greens, eggplant, squash, mushroom and yams. The foundation of ingredients may sound basic, but there are two key ingredients that are ubiquitous to Ethiopian cuisine. Ethiopian butter, known as kibeh, is a clarified butter flavored with cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and other native spices, which provides an unforgettable taste. The other flavor that is original to Ethiopian cuisine is berbere, which is a mix of spiced herbs that include cumin, chili powder and cardamom, a flavor that is essential to most Ethiopian dishes.

Venturing back into the restaurant was not just for the sake of business. Aster has always been more about the social context of owning a restaurant, above anything else. She knows firsthand how difficult it is to settle into a new country and gain work experience. As a woman that lives to inspire, her message to her staff and fellow Africans is that if she can make it, they can too.

Los ingredientes pueden sonar básicos, pero dos ingredientes son muy utilizados en la cocina etíope: la mantequilla etíope, llamada kibeh, es una mantequilla clarificada con sabor a cardamomo, nuez moscada, canela, jengibre y otras especias nativas, las que le brindan un sabor inolvidable.

El segundo ingrediente original de la cocina etíope es el berbere, una mezcla de hierbas y especias que incluye comino, polvo de chile y cardamomo y que es esencial en la mayoría de los platillos etíopes.

Regresar al mundo de los restaurantes no solo fue una decisión de negocios. Aster siempre se concentró más en el contexto social que implica ser propietaria de un restaurante.

City Heights Town Council shines light on safety

The City Heights Town Council has made the community a little safer.

The group installed more than 50 solarpowered, motion-activated lights in alleys, backyards and other spots throughout the neighborhood, and it is looking to add more.

Guy N. Mock, the Town Council’s cochair, said the group used mapping tools, police input, community outreach and surveys to determine where residents needed the lights the most. Installation began around November.

Residents gave many reasons for needing more light.

“We got everything from being accosted and assaulted at night coming home from work, to people stealing the tools out of vehicles and just about everything in between,” Mock said. “Things like unsafe walking conditions, (including) one

gentleman that was in his 80s or 90s had trip hazards in front of his house.”

The Town Council bought lights that were green and flexible.

“We decided on solar power motion sensing lights with LED lights in them because of the low energy use, and the fact that it’s a standalone product we can install it anywhere as long as we can get the solar panel in the southern direction to gather light to charge the system,” Mock said.

And the Town Council installed the lights in some unusual locations.

“We installed quite a few in alleys and backyards where crime was an issue,” said Jeanette Neeley, a community organizer with the Town Council and a Mid-City CAN Coordinating Council member. “Some of them are installed on tree stumps. Some of them are installed on signs leading down into a canyon. Some of them are installed on a post sticking up in an alley.”

The Town Council undertook the proj-

ect because “safety and the perception of safety were of huge concern and interest here,” Neeley said.

A key difference between this and previous efforts to increase street lighting in City Heights is that renters as well as homeowners received lights, Mock said. And despite having a relatively small grant from Price Charities to buy, install and check on the lights, Town Council came in under budget. It anticipates being able to install about a dozen more lights with the money it saved.

The Council hired two City Heights residents to work on the project, one to install and another to check the installation.

And Neeley checked on some of the installations herself and heard about the difference they made firsthand.

“Sometimes we would talk to the neighbors and we would hear the great stories,” Neeley said. “They would say, ‘You have no idea how much safer I feel.’”

The American Red Cross responds to several hundred local disasters in this region annually, and the biggest threat to us everyday is fire. That’s why on May 18 your local Red Cross - in conjunction with Price Charities, the City of San Diego and the Azalea Park Neighborhood Association - will take part in a City Heights canvassing effort aimed at decreasing the chances of fires in our homes and canyons.

The “I’m Ready and I Know It!” event will kick off with a rally at City Heights Park, next to the City Heights Library at the corner of Wightman Street and Fairmount Avenue, from 9:30 to 10 am. Check in will be from 8 to 9 a.m. and canvassing is scheduled from 10 a.m until noon. All volunteers will receive a free Red Cross T-shirt, bottled water, a continental breakfast, a boxed lunch and snacks.

Going through a neighborhood to look for fire hazards and develop prevention strategies is one of the most effective methods to engage residents and build healthy communities. It is the first step to work with residents

and neighborhood-based organizations to address immediate- and long-term needs in our county’s most vulnerable communities.

The goal is for Red Cross to become part of sustainable networks and empower residents to become stronger and more resilient. Such networks enable local neighborhoods to recover quickly after a major disaster.

The local Red Cross chapter joined the City Heights Communities and Canyons Alliance within the past year to support efforts of improving the health and safety of our local neighborhoods and canyons.

“The tremendous amount of work that our CCA partners have engaged in to revitalize the canyons and the process of neighborhood engagement is extremely vital to building healthy communities,” said Ricardo Moran, preparedness manager with the Red Cross. “Our research has shown that healthy communities are the ones that recover from disasters, large and small, and continue to thrive. Red Cross supports these grassroots efforts for neighbors to engage one another in building a safe and vibrant City Heights.”

The San Diego Futures Foundation is helping to bridge the digital divide in City Heights.

In simple language, the digital divide is the gap between people who have and use communication technology and those who don’t, and research shows City Heights residents are connected to the Internet in far smaller numbers than most in the region. Experts say the inequity can negatively affect one’s ability to stay informed, gain education, and get a job.

The San Diego Futures Foundation, a nonprofit headquartered in City Heights, has helped more than 10,000 people get online since its inception in 2008. The group’s broadband initiative offers refurbished computers - both desktop and laptop - with installed software at greatly discounted prices. The Futures Foundation also can qualify you for discounted monthly Internet service.

Playing it safe on two wheels With efforts underway to get more people to ride their bike in City Heights, a primer on bicycle safety may be in order.

Bicycle riders and motorists follow the same rules and have the same rights. For example, both cars and bicycles must stop at a stop sign. Bicyclists also must travel in the same direction as cars. And bicyclists must stay in a bike lane when moving slower than normal traffic speed. In fact, the California Highway Patrol says bicyclists should only leave a bike lane when necessary to pass another bicycle, vehicle, or pedestrian; when getting ready to turn left; or when necessary to avoid parked cars or other objects.

Authorities say bicycle riders should never allow a passenger to sit on the handlebars. They also say bicyclists should use proper hand signals when making a turn in traffic. And never hitch a ride by hanging onto a moving vehicle while riding your bike.

The CHP says common causes of bicycle accidents include the rider using the wrong side of the road and a motorist making an unsafe left or right turn into the path of someone on a bike. Make sure a motorist making a turn sees you before you proceed into an intersection.

Bicyclists also should be aware of riding into the path of someone in a car who is opening their door.

Other safety tips:

• When crossing sewer gratings or railroad tracks, cross at a 90-degree angle.

• Stay in single file when riding with others.

• You’re safer wearing shoes.

• Avoid wearing long skirts and flare pants. You also might want to clasp your pants to your legs with clips or leg bands.

• Wear a helmet. It’s the law.

• Never ride your bicycle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• When leaving your bike unattended on a sidewalk or parking, make sure to use a strong chain and padlock to keep it from being stolen.
