For the first time, City Heights is getting a baseball league, and it will kick off for kids ages 10 to 13 on Sept. 21 at the YMCA.

Nine-year-old Rose Ramos was so excited she could hardly stop jumping. Eight-year-old Ximena Garcia said she felt as though she was getting ready to go to the moon.

Rose, Ximena and a large group of fellow third graders at Central Elementary School in City Heights had just stepped off a bus that had whisked them to San Diego County’s backwoods for a two-day, one-night camping trip funded by a small nonprofit that has been sponsoring such

excursions for the past six years.

Every summer, every third grader at Central Elementary is offered the chance to spend some quality time outdoors thanks to the Jarrett Meeker Foundation, whose founder, Judy Meeker, is intent on carrying on the legacy of the active, 8-year-old son she lost to a backyard accident in 1987.

“It’s all about education and getting kids outside and unplugged from their electronics and having them connect with nature,” said Judy

Bus lines getting an overhaul in City Heights

City Heights is on the verge of seeing an unprecedented improvement in public transit.

Construction of 10 bus stations needed for a new high-frequency, limited-stop transit line between San Diego State University and downtown that will run along El Cajon Boulevard through City Heights began in July and is set to be completed next summer.

Transit officials say the new MidCity Rapid line on El Cajon Boulevard, with a projected budget of $44.5 million, will nearly triple the number of current commuters using the bus along that route from 6,000 to 17,000.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Association of Governments has secured funding needed to build bus stations on state Route 15 at El Cajon Boulevard

and University Avenue that will service a new freeway-based Bus Rapid Transit line connecting City Heights to downtown and North County. Riders will use elevators and stairs to reach buses stopping at freeway stations alongside lanes dedicated solely for mass transit.

Stations will be the first in the county situated on a freeway. Total project cost is projected at $45 million, transit officials say.

“The long wait is over,” said City Councilwoman Marti Emerald, whose district includes City Heights. “We can now look forward to improved access for the businesses and residents in these areas, which will boost employment, improve services and more.”

Planners are hoping that final freeway station designs will be finished by October, with construction beginning next year.

Lack of public transportation has long been a sore point in City Heights, where many are miffed that planners never pushed to get a trolley line through the community.

Eric Adams, project manager for the MidCity Rapid line that will run on El Cajon Boulevard, said the new bus route will be “trolley like” and will include “a dedicated bus guideway.”

“This is a higher level of bus service with a higher level of frequency and a higher level of amenities,” Adams said. “These will not be your typical bus stops where you basically have a pole in the ground.”

Stations will include the same sort of service seen at a trolley stop, including custom shelters and electronic signs that provide up-to-the-minute updates on when the next bus will arrive. Sidewalks and crosswalks are set for a makeover, and busonly lanes are on tap for Park Boulevard in nearby North Park.

“We went through quite an extensive outreach effort in the planning and design phases and we believe this will be a great benefit to the community,” Adams said.

Construction of the guideways and 10 transit stations is expected to cost $11 million, Adams said, and the San Diego Association of Governments is buying a new fleet of 18 accordion buses at $1 million each that will run on compressed natural gas to service the line. Buses will run every 10 minutes during peak hours and every 15 minutes during non peak hours.

NEIGHBORHOODNEWS National Night Out takes a bite out of crime

Local residents are invited to join their neighbors at Teralta Park on Aug. 6 as part of this year’s `National Night Out’ events across the country. The City Heights gathering is the product of a partnership between residents, community organizations and businesses and city officials aiming to promote change in this unique park above state Route 15.

The event is set from 4 to 8 p.m. at Orange Avenue and 40th Street. Jumpers, games, a mobile arcade, raffles and a barbecue will be among the highlights. Scheduled speakers include City Councilmembers Marti Emerald and Todd Gloria, San Diego Police Chief Bill Lansdowne, San Diego Gang Commissioner Dana Brown and several neighborhood residents.

Much of the gathering will be educational. Community resource tables will educate participants on ways to be safer at home and in the community. Photos and other displays will highlight what neighborhood groups are doing to envision and have a more familyfriendly park.

Secure valet bike parking will be provided to encourage bicycling to this event – which will be alcohol, drug and tobacco free.

The event will conclude with a candlelight walk for peace around the park.

Invitamos a los residentes locales a acompañar a sus vecinos en el Parque Teralta el 6 de agosto como parte de los eventos que se llevarán a cabo en todo el país durante la Noche Vecinal Nacional (National Night Out). La reunión en City Heights es el producto de una alianza entre residentes, organizaciones comunitarias, empresas y funcionarios municipales que desean promover el cambio en este único parque ubicado sobre la Ruta Estatal 15.

El evento se llevará a cabo de 4 a 8 p.m. en Orange Avenue y la Calle 40. Brincolines, juegos, videojuegos móviles, rifas y una parrillada serán parte del evento. Entre los oradores invitados estarán los Concejales Municipales Marti Emerald y Todd Gloria, el Jefe de la Policía de San Diego Bill Lansdowne, Dana Brown, quien es la Comisionada de Pandillas de San Diego y varios otros residentes del vecindario.

NEWS BRIEFS Bike ride along car-free streets

A new group is holding an Aug. 11 event aimed at bringing families out of their homes and onto their bikes to ride along car-free streets.

CicloSDias begins at 10 a.m. and follows a path beginning at Park de la Cruz at Landis and 38th streets near Cherokee Point Elementary School in City Heights. From there, the vehicle-free route will maneuver west along Wightman Street to 30th Street before heading south to K Street in Logan Heights.

The two-way route will be car-free and open to pedestrians, cyclists, skaters and others who use non-motorized forms of transportation.

“Ciclo­vía,” which translates to English as “bike path,” was coined in Bogota, Colombia, a city that began experimenting with its model Ciclovia initiative in 1974 in response to the congestion and pollution of city streets. CicloSDias San Diego is modeled after similar car-free events held in cities around the world, including New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Cooking with the experts There still are a few courses left in the latest series of cooking classes taught by top chefs from El Cajon Boulevard.

The Boulevard Cooking Class is touted as an opportunity to learn how to cook food from throughout the world. The courses enable participants to familiarize themselves with an array of ethnic restaurants while learning about international cuisine and culture.

Previous classes, which are organized through the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association, included instruction on Asian and East African food. Courses taught by chefs from Mama’s Lebanese Bakery on Aug. 5, Awash Ethiopian Restaurant on Aug. 12, and Imig’s Kitchen and Bar on Aug. 19 remain in the current series.

I

’m very excited to be a part of the Mid-City CAN team. These past two years mentoring City Heights youth at Crawford High School has been so much fun, and I am excited to continue building new relationships within City Heights as Mid-City CAN’s newest community organizer.

I was born and raised in San Diego County. I attended Spring Valley Middle School and Grossmont High School, where I engaged in my first organizing experience: pushing our district to fund our Advanced Placement Spanish Literature class during my senior year. That was a key win because I eventually majored in Spanish Literature (and minored in Ethnic Studies) at the University of California, San Diego.

While in college, I worked with student groups of color, the Student Affirmative Action Coalition, and reached out to San Diego high school students from underresourced schools, building awareness about college access and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender identity among students of color. After graduating from the University of California, San Diego, I pursued a career in youth- and communitybased work in communities of color.

I started with a labor organizing internship organizing service workers at Oakland International Airport, and then went on to empower inner-city youth through creative writing programs in San Francisco. I finally moved back to San Diego and continued working with youth in schools as a Special Education Assistant in the San Diego Unified School District.

For the past two years, I mentored 9th

and 10th graders in City Heights at Crawford High through AmeriCorps. Learning from my students for the past two years is an experience I hold close to my heart. I have both laughed and cried with them, while exposing them to new experiences and opportunities to create enduring change in their communities.

I hope to continue that type of work in City Heights with Mid-City CAN. A little about myself? Well, I am a Cancer, I love long walks on the beach… just kidding. I enjoy running and being outside. I wish I could surf better than I do, and I love to watch mixed martial arts on TV. I am a fourth generation Japanese American and play Taiko drums with my Temple.

I’m happy to be in City Heights, and I’m looking forward to collaborating and engaging with community members in meaningful and fun ways.

my career towards helping youth overcome their struggles, whether those are at home or in the community, to provide a better way of life for them. I also see youth as more than just our future. I believe they have the opportunity to be powerful change agents in our community if we stop to listen to them and give them the opportunity to speak. Also, let’s be honest, working with youth is fun!

I fell in love with City Heights from the moment I was introduced to it.

The cultures fascinated me and gave me a feeling of community. The food was also a way of me learning and connecting with different cultures, whether I was eating broken rice, sambusas, or pupusas. I’m excited and motivated to work in the City Heights community and help inspire young leaders to take ownership of their city and make a difference.

In my free time, I enjoy music from all genres and cultures. I play the guitar as a way of self-healing and believe that music can be a bridge for people to connect to each other or back with themselves. Everyone has something they feel or something they want to say that words can’t really explain. This is where the Blues, Funk, Rock, Hip-Hop, Dance, Rancheras, or any other style comes to the rescue.

have always been a person on the move. I was born in Indio. One day later, I was living in Calexico. From there, I moved constantly throughout the Imperial Valley and Mexicali for years until I eventually made my way to San Diego at 17 to attend San Diego State University, becoming the first in my family to attend and graduate from a university. Nine years later, I earned my master’s in education, and I am still living in beautiful San Diego.

During that time, I lived almost entirely in the College and City Heights areas.

I faced many obstacles growing up, such as poverty, homelessness, constantly moving and living in a single-parent household. These experiences inspired me to dedicate

MORENO, de P4 Martin Moreno: Siempre he estado en movimiento. Nací en Indio.

Un día después estaba viviendo en Calexico. Desde entonces me mudé varias veces a lo largo del Valle Imperial y Mexicali a lo largo de los años hasta que eventualmente llegué a San Diego a los 17 años para estudiar en la Universidad San Diego State. Fui el primero en mi familia en asistir y graduarse de la universidad. Nueve años después, obtuve mi título de Maestría en Educación y sigo viviendo en la hermosa ciudad de San Diego. Durante todo este tiempo, viví en las áreas de College y City Heights.

Al crecer, me enfrenté a muchos obstáculos, tales como pobreza, falta de hogar, mudanzas constantes y ser criado en un hogar monoparental. Estas experiencias me inspiraron a escoger una profesión en la que pudiera dedicarme a ayudar a los jóvenes a superar sus obstáculos, sin importar si se encuentran en su hogar o en la comunidad, para que puedan aspirar a una vida mejor. YAMAGUCHI, de P4 Laura Yamaguchi: Me siento muy contenta de formar parte del equipo de Mid-City CAN. Los dos últimos años trabajando como mentora con los jóvenes de City Heights en la Preparatoria Crawford han sido muy divertidos y me siento muy feliz porque puedo continuar forjando nuevas relaciones dentro de City Heights como la más reciente organizadora comunitaria de Mid-City CAN. Nací y crecí en el Condado de San Diego. Asistí a la Secundaria Spring Valley y a la Preparatoria Grossmont, en donde tuve mi primera experiencia como organizadora solicitándole a nuestro distrito que financiara nuestra clase Avanzada de Literatura Española durante mi último año. Fue una victoria clave porque eventualmente estudié Literatura Española (con una subespecialidad en Estudios Étnicos) en la Universidad de California, San Diego.

En la universidad trabajé con grupos de estudiantes de color, con la Coalición Estudiantil de Acción Afirmativa y con estudiantes de las preparatorias de San Diego provenientes de escuelas de bajos recursos para crear conciencia en torno al acceso a educación superior y acerca de la identidad lesbiana, gay, bisexual y transgénero entre los estudiantes de color. Después de graduarme de la Universidad de California, San Diego, decidí trabajar con los jóvenes y comunidades de color.

Me emociona y motiva trabajar en la comunidad de City Heights y ayudar a inspirar a los jóvenes líderes para que tomen posesión de su ciudad y marquen la diferencia.

Durante mi tiempo libre, disfruto de escuchar música de todos los géneros y culturas. Toco la guitarra como una forma de autosanación y creo que la música puede ser un puente entre las personas a través del cual pueden conectarse entre ellas o dentro de ellas mismas. Todos tenemos algo que sentimos o queremos decir que no siempre podemos decir con palabras.

Addressing hunger in

City Heights

By Adam Ward About 40 percent of families in City Heights with children younger than 18 live in poverty. The San Diego Hunger Coalition is trying to do something about it.

Jennifer Tracy, the Hunger Coalition’s executive director, estimates that roughly one-fifth of the organization’s efforts are focused in City Heights.

The rest are focused on combating hunger countywide.

“The countywide work, a lot of it is an umbrella that includes things happening in City Heights,” she said.

The Hunger Coalition has been around for about 30 years and initially was an all-volunteer organization. It is part of the Mid-City CAN Food Justice Momentum Team. Food justice is a way to address inequalities in such things as the distribution of food, which some say creates food insecurity despite a system with an abundance in Western countries.

“Our momentum team existed before Building Healthy Communities came to City Heights, and so we were one of the few that already had relationships and had already developed some goals and outcomes,” Tracy said.

The Hunger Coalition also is a recipient of the Building Healthy Communities Initiative, a 10year, $1-billion plan aimed at transforming the way Californians think about and support health.

The Initiative focuses on City Heights and 13 other sites in the state.

Much of the Hunger Coalition’s work is centered around connecting the hungry with CalFresh assistance. CalFresh, formerly known as food stamps, is another name for the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, that allows needy families to buy food.

Tracy said the Hunger Coalition’s main target areas are: reaching out to families in City Heights that aren’t able to buy the food they need; leading the countywide CalFresh Task Force; expanding school and summer meals programs; and policy work.

Much of the Coalition’s policy work focuses on SNAP funding, which has historically been included with the Federal Farm Bill.

The Hunger Coalition uses promotoras, or Latino community members with specialized health education training, to do outreach about CalFresh.

It reports some impressive results.

“As of March 2013, our promotora program has enrolled 326 households in the CalFresh Program,” according to the Hunger Coalition’s City Heights outcomes report. “This effort has brought in an estimated $330,948 in CalFresh dollars to our City Heights community since January 2012, which is equivalent to over $569,230 in economic impact.”

The promotora program also provides a connection to the community.

“At least one of the promotoras attends the (Food Justice Momentum Team) meetings, so they helped recruit people for the planning process through the farmers market and outreach at the health centers,” Tracy said. “So they were really involved in getting the community engaged in the planning process.”

Tracy said that knowledge is key.

“We wanted to make sure that the (things) we were investing our time in are actually what the residents” really need and want.

“Every kid should be able to go camping,” said teacher Sarah Mathy, who helps coordinate the excursions.

“This is an awesome opportunity for kids who often don’t get these kinds of opportunities,” said retired teacher Jackie Grobarek, who helps set up the annual trip.

It’s not all play. During the trip, the Barona Band of Mission Indians will provide lessons on early California history. The San Diego Astronomy Association will set up telescopes to help kids learn about the constellations and planets. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team will talk about surviving in the wild. And a group called Kruisin’ Kritters will let the kids handle snakes, lizards and other creepy crawlies for a little show and tell.

“The opportunity that the Meeker Foundation gives the Central kids is outstanding,” said district Superintendent and former Central Elementary School Principal Cindy Marten. “Over the years, I have seen a profound impact in our kids after they return from the trip. It really opens their eyes and their hearts to the world of nature.”

Hikes, campfires and composting are incorporated into the trip at Louis Stelzer County Park some 25 miles or so northeast of City Heights. The Meeker Foundation pays for all the snacks and meals, except breakfast. Volun-

teers with the Lake Murray Kiwanis Club pull in shortly after daybreak to fry up some pancakes.

“We’ve created an outdoor classroom,” Meeker said. “And we’re giving kids an opportunity to go hiking, eat good food and bond with each other.”

Meeker said her foundation has covered the cost of taking more than 1,000 Central Elementary third graders camping since it got involved in the effort.

Central Elementary School has been offering campouts for third graders since shortly after Mathy began teaching there seven years ago. Knowing that her class didn’t have the same recreational opportunities as kids elsewhere in the city, Mathy figured she’d treat them to a night of camping.

But then-principal Staci Monreal said if Mathy’s class went, all third grade classes had to go, to.

There was just one problem: Mathy didn’t have the money to bus, feed and care for some 140 third graders on a campout.

Then she heard about the Jarrett Meeker Foundation through an AmeriCorps volunteer at the school.

“My great hope was that we could all have a shared experience while learning about science and the outdoors,” Mathy said.

The Jarrett Meeker Foundation was sold. In the summer of 2008, ’09 and ’10, it paid for overnight trips at what was then called the San Diego Wild Animal Park. Judy Meeker, though, thought her nonprofit could craft a more creative camping experience for less money. It worked with teachers and then-principalMarten and put together an

educational excursion tailored to Central Elementary’s lesson plans.

“A lot of these children have never been away from home before, so it’s quite the experience for them,” said Vice Principal Sarah Ott. “They’ve never even had s’mores before. They’d grab a graham cracker and say, ‘Now what do I do?! Now what do I do?! It was amazing.”

Mathy said she is awed at how the program has evolved. “I never thought it would grow into something like this,” she said. “I just wanted to go camping.”

Judy Meeks said she’s hoping to expand the program to include other schools in other parts of the San Diego County. Funding, however, remains a challenge.

Her nonprofit doesn’t even have a grant writer.

That hasn’t kept her from hoping.

“This is a great program,” she said. “A dream for our board would be to duplicate this for all third graders, no matter where they live.”

“Game on!” was the theme for the 2013 San Diego County Fair. And as a registered dietician, the game was on for me as I challenged myself to find healthy food options from this year’s 100-plus food-themed booths.

I walked up and down the rows of food booths trying to locate something that would classify as “healthy” and that was not deep fat fried. I ended my journey finding grilled veggies and chicken that I was going to share with my friend. Unfortunately during my quest for healthy, he found a 3-foot corn sausage dog (and that was the smaller version).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 33 percent of adults living in San Diego County - or 1 in 3 - are overweight, and 26 percent - more than 1 in 4 - is obese. Further, nearly 30 percent of students in grades five, seven and nine are overweight or obese.

Next time you head out to the fair or similar event and have a hankering for something sweet, keep these numbers in mind: a 150-pound person must walk one mile to burn off the calories from consuming cotton candy; three miles for cheese on-a-stick; four miles for a corn dog; five miles for a fried candy bar; and 11 miles for a gigantic grilled turkey leg.

This is an email that I recently received from a friend that works for the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The subject was titled “Scary but true….during the run of the fair...this happened...”

Families take the lead in educating their kids

Family involvement in their children’s education is a powerful way to increase a student’s learning. Decades of research shows that when families are involved students have higher grades, test scores and graduation rates; better school attendance; increased motivation and better self esteem; lower rates of suspension; decreased drug and alcohol use; and fewer incidents of violent behavior.

In fact, a family’s participation in education can help predict a child’s educational success more than a family’s socio-economic status. It is also important to note that school age children spend only 30 percent of their waking hours (including weekends and holidays) at school. This means as families we have many opportunities to be involved in our children’s learning. “It’s important to be our child’s first role model and teacher. We are teaching them simple skills that will last them for a lifetime,” said Yesenia Flores, a Ready to Read Parent Leader.

“Having my family involved in my education really motivates me to do well,” says Mireille Garcia, a student participant of Juma Ventures. A positive learning environment at home means that the family sets high expectations for their children’s educational success and shows their satisfaction when the child is learning. The family establishes a daily routine that includes providing time and a quiet place

to study, assigning responsibility for chores at home, assuring that a child has enough sleep and sharing healthy dinners together with no distractions – including telephones or the television.

As one parent who participated in a Ready to Read program at Florence Griffith-Joyner Elementary School said: “I like the idea that you can teach your children through things that you do every day… like using the ads from the grocery store to talk about colors, shapes, and numbers or pointing out letters and numbers on signs when you are walking.”

In addition, a family can cook with their child and ask them to read the recipe and measure the ingredients. The trick to creating family learning opportunities is to make it fun and easy so everyone enjoys their learning time

together.

For those families that can, volunteering or helping in the classroom, attending events, raising money and being a leader is invaluable.

Schools also need families to help in assuring that a child completes his or her homework.

It is also important to communicate with the school. As Rickie Brown, the grandmother of a student at Rosa Parks Elementary, said, “If I am not involved in my grandson’s education, there is no way that I can be supportive or get the help he needs.”

Being involved in school demonstrates the importance of education to your child. And being involved at the school can help build supportive and informative relationships with other families and educators.

“I want to learn more so I can help my child

have a better future through education,” said Sara Najemeddinm, a mother of an incoming kindergartener at Cherokee Point Elementary.

The responsibility to help our children succeed belongs to all of us – families, schools, educators, government, business and nonprofits. For this reason, you are invited to get involved with City Heights Partnership for Children!

Como dijo Rickie Brown, abuela de un estudiante de la Primaria Rosa Parks, “si no me involucro en la educación de mi nieto, no puedo apoyarlo ni obtener la ayuda que necesita”.

Monroe Clark Middle School sixth graders holding colorfully painted flags and handmade masks waited eagerly on the athletic field at their campus. They cheered when Principal Thomas Liberto walked in the annual parade, complete with marching band, to Rosa Parks Elementary two blocks away.

This is the eighth summer the school has taken over the stretch between it and its closest feeder school for a rowdy celebration. The Mid City Police Division blocks traffic for the event and the San Diego Guild of Puppetry works with students on the art they march with.

The point of the short July 9 march was to welcome incoming sixth graders.

“So, it’s a message to them to say, ‘hey, we’re welcoming you. We want you here,” Liberto said. “’You’re important not only to our school, but to the whole community.’ And so, we do this parade to go down and pick them up and bring them over.”

Liberto said the parade helps ease the transition to the middle school for anxious students and their parents and reminds the school’s neighbors that they’re part of a tight-knit community.

As the students made their way down 45th Street, neighborhood residents looked on from front yards, pulled chairs to the curb and snapped pictures with their phones.

Current sixth grader Ahmed Mohamed remembers last year’s puppet parade, which introduced him to Monroe Clark.

He said he was excited to take over the neighborhood streets again.

“We get to run around, go to Rosa Parks. It’s awesome,” he said, beaming. But the best part is “giving masks to the little kids.”

His classmate Lizeth Lopez agreed that the parade is a lot of fun. But she hopes it also shows the incoming students a few important things about their new school.

“It’s a big school,” she said. “But there’s people that are really smart here and they value things a lot.”

Getting ready for school

A new school year is around the corner, and parents need to be as prepared as their children.

Education experts say it is vital that parents and guardians contact teachers once the school year begins so they can be updated with phone calls and emails about their child’s progress. Communicating with your child’s teacher, especially when your child is in elementary school, is an essential part of a strong education. While it may be more difficult to be in touch with every high school or middle school teacher because of the many classes that students take, it is not impossible. Most schools have web sites and email links that make this job easier for parents.

Parents also should know what the academic expectations are so that they can help guide their child toward meeting various goals.

One of the most effective ways to help younger children is reading regularly to them, or have them read regularly to you. Studies show that children who are read to regularly do much better in school than those who are not.

Other steps include establishing a learning schedule at home and creating a learning space that will enable your child to focus solely on schoolwork.

If you have time, getting involved in school events is an effective way of showing support and enthusiasm. If your child plays in a school band, for example, becoming part of a band booster club will help both your child and the school’s music department. It’s also a great way to learn more about a school.

Taking a hands-off attitude when it comes to your child’s education is not an option.

City Heights is getting a youth baseball league this fall at the Copley Family YMCA. The league is open to Mid-City youth from 10 to 13 years old.

The inaugural season kicks off with a free clinic and registration on Sept. 21.

Games and practices begin later in September and will take place at the recently renovated Hoover High School athletic field. All youth participants will receive uniforms, hats and gloves.

The league was created thanks to a grant from the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, a joint venture of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association.

“Baseball, like other sports, can instill values that go well beyond the game,” said YMCA Youth Sports Director Wilder Felusme. “The discipline and teamwork they learn here can help create a better community.”

Local community organizations, such as the Rising Stars Charitable Foundation and Hoover High School, have long voiced the need for a youth baseball league in City Heights.

“There is a rich tradition of youth baseball in San Diego that has not been

active for a long time,” said Hoover High Athletic Director Ron Lardizaba. “We hope to have more major leaguers from City Heights playing the game someday.”

Adults seeking volunteer opportunities can take part as well, as the Copley Family YMCA is looking for coaches to help lead and pilot the league.

The Copley Family YMCA is accepting in-kind and monetary contributions for uniforms, equipment and financial assistance scholarships. Those interested in donating to the project should contact Andrew Holets, Grants/Community Outreach Specialist, at 619-283-2251, or via email at aholets@ymca.org.

City Heights health center among those securing a federal grant Centro de salud de City Heights obtiene subsidio federal

Seven health centers in San Diego County have received federal grants to help enroll people in new insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act. The centers will receive a total of more than $2 million to fund the effort.

Family Health Centers of San Diego, which runs a clinic on El Cajon Boulevard in City Heights, won the largest local award, which totals more than $861,000. The nonprofit will use the money to hire outreach workers, application assistants and a social media coordinator.

Spokeswoman Jeannette Lawrence Shay said for the next few months, staff will try to spread the word about the Affordable Care Act. “But once it becomes Oct. 1 and people can actually sign up for Covered California and the expanded Medi-Cal, our staff will be sitting with people one-on-one helping people complete their applications, get all of the documentation they need and submit them,” Shay said.

San Ysidro Health Center also received a grant to do outreach and enrollment. It operates 11 clinics in the South Bay. The center’s president, Kevin Mattson, said anyone can get primary care at his clinics and that those who enroll in one of the new insurance plans will get a lot more.

“These patients, by getting on the insurance exchange, or Covered California, would have coverage for specialty care, hospitalizations, surgery, outpatient surgery, all the other diagnostic things that we don’t do at San Ysidro Health Center,” Mattson said.

Statewide, health centers have received nearly $22 million to enroll the uninsured. Officials hope to provide more than 500,000 Californians with new health coverage.

“What we are trying to do, as part of the Building Healthy Communities Initiative (is) invite folks to live active lives,” Van Vleck said. “I think projects like this help encourage them to ride, but also make it safer for them to ride.”

While the city may have made the intersection at 54th and University safer for cyclists, it still needs improvement, Van Vleck said. “Basically, it is like a mini-freeway interchange facility on a neighborhood street.”

He said 36 people who were walking or riding their bike were hit by cars at the intersection from 1998 to 2012.

“And that’s just reported crashes,” he said. “Less than half of bike and pedestrian crashes are reported.”

The Built Environment Team created a plan to redesign the entire intersection, doing away with the freeway-style turns, he said. The plan calls for moving the bus stop to the northwest corner and creating a small public plaza. Van Vleck said the project, if carried out, could cost about $1.5 million.

The group believes the plan is now closer to reality.

“We see the green bike lane as a symbol of a commitment to not only improve safety for active transportation at this intersection, but to encourage it,” Van Vleck wrote in a May email about the improvements.

Mom paves the way for a safer community

I

t all began when my citizenship class instructor, Mechelle Perrott, gave us a homework assignment to write a letter to the government. So I wrote my letter to Jerry Sanders, then mayor of San Diego, on Dec. 9, 2011. The letter was about a dangerous pedestrian intersection close to my son’s school. Mechelle suggested I take photos of the area and include them with my letter. She also suggested getting signatures of concerned people in the neighborhood. I thought it was a good idea, but difficult for me because I’m very shy.

My English isn’t good enough, but when I saw the confidence she had in me, it motivated me to try.

I started asking for signatures in the park located next to the school, and after getting the first signatures, I noticed that the next ones weren’t so difficult. On one occasion there was a soccer team, and I asked them for signatures. I found out that only two of them understood me, so I asked them to explain in their language to their friends. Soon I was in the middle of their group. (All of them were tall and I’m short. Somebody saw me and said it looked very funny. Un-

fortunately, I didn’t take any photos. That would have been a very funny keepsake!)

Every place I went I brought my letter, because I wanted to ask people who are connected to and concerned about this area.

My husband was surprised; he couldn’t believe that I had the courage to ask for signatures. But the more signatures I collected, the more excited I became. I was very surprised about the reaction of the people. Almost all of the people that I asked for signatures signed my letter and agreed that it was a dangerous intersection. I was very proud because I got 100 signatures!

So at the end of two weeks I decided that it was time to send the letter. To be honest, I didn’t think anyone would respond to me. Or if I did get a response, it would be from someone saying they were sorry but couldn’t do anything about it. I was losing the little hope that I had when suddenly I received the letter the following April 17. Just seeing the envelope gave me a rush of excitement. So I came to school and showed it to Mechelle. After reading it, she told me that they had to do research about the intersection and spend money to do it. I started crying. In that moment I realized how big this thing was, and it was more than fixing the problem. This helped instill me with

confidence, and I came to realize we can do more than what we think. Sometimes fear holds us back.

The other day, I saw that they already changed the standard yellow crosswalk to a “laddered crosswalk,” one that has big, thick stripes in the middle to make it more visible. In the letter, the city also said it will install a street light on the south of the street near the school by December.

I feel so good and very thankful with Mechelle for encouraging me to write the city and collect signatures on a petition.

Some day, when my son grows up, I will proudly show him the letter and a picture from the place where they put a light close to the school.

I decided to write about my experience and get it publicized because I believe it may encourage others like me to take similar action to improve their neighborhood.

Thanks to our schools and newspapers like this and teachers like Mechelle lives are being changed.

Alguien me vio y dijo que lucía chistosa. Desafortunadamente no tomé ninguna foto. ¡Hubiera sido un recuerdo muy gracioso!

A donde fuera llevaba mi carta porque quería pedir la firma de las personas afectadas y preocupadas por el área. Mi esposo se sorprendió, no podía creer que yo tuviera el valor de pedir firmas. Pero mientras más firmas conseguía, más emocionada me sentía. Me sorprendió la reacción de la gente. Casi todas las personas a las que les pedí que firmaran mi carta firmaron y también pensaban que la intersección era peligrosa. ¡Me sentí muy orgullosa cuando llegué a 100 firmas!

Solo había un problema: Mathy no tenía el dinero para transportar, alimentar y cuidar a más de 140 alumnos de tercer grado durante un campamento.

Fue entonces cuando se enteró de la Fundación Jarrett Meeker a través de un voluntario de AmeriCorps que trabajaba en la escuela.

“Mi gran esperanza era que todos pudieran compartir la experiencia mientras aprenden de ciencias y de la naturaleza”, dijo Mathy.

La Fundación Jarrett Meeker aceptó.

Durante los veranos del 2008, 2009 y 2010 financió estadías nocturnas en el antes llamado San Diego Wild Animal Park. Sin embargo, Judy Meeker decidió que su organización podía organizar una experiencia de campamento más creativa por menos dinero.

Trabajó con los maestros y la ex directora Marten para preparar una excursión educativa diseñada alrededor de las lecciones de la Primaria Central.

Después de dos semanas decidí que era momento de enviar la carta. Para ser honesta, no pensé que nadie fuera a responder. O si alguien respondía, sería para decir que lo sentían pero que no podían hacer nada. Estaba perdiendo la esperanza cuando recibí una carta el 17 de abril. Me emocioné solo con ver el sobre. Lo llevé a la escuela y se lo enseñé a Mechelle.

Después de leer la carta, me dijo que iban a estudiar la intersección e invertir dinero en hacerlo. Comencé a llorar. En ese momento me di cuenta que se trataba de mucho más que encontrar la solución a un problema. Fue algo que me enseñó a tener confianza y a darme cuenta que podemos hacer más de lo que creemos. Algunas veces el miedo nos detiene.

Un día vi que habían cambiado el cruce peatonal amarillo tradicional por un “cruce peatonal escalonado” que tiene grandes y anchas franjas en el medio para hacerlo más visible. En la carta, la ciudad dijo que también in-

Mathy dijo que se siente maravillada por la evolución del programa. “Nunca pensé que crecería hasta convertirse en algo como esto”, dijo. “Yo solo quería llevarlos de campamento.”

Judy Meeker dijo que espera expandir el programa para incluir a otras escuelas en otras áreas del Condado de San Diego. El financiamiento, sin embargo, sigue siendo un problema. Su organización no cuenta siquiera con un redactor de propuestas.

ESCUELA, de P9 Una de las formas más efectivas de ayudar a los niños pequeños es leerles regularmente o hacer que regularmente ellos le lean a usted. Diversos estudios demuestran que los niños a los que se les lee regularmente tienen más éxito en la escuela que aquellos a los que no se les lee.

Otros pasos que se pueden tomar incluyen establecer una rutina de aprendizaje en el hogar y crear un espacio que le permita al niño concentrarse únicamente en sus deberes escolares.

Si tiene tiempo, participar en los eventos escolares es una forma efectiva de demostrar su apoyo y entusiasmo hacia la escuela. Si su hijo forma parte de la banda escolar, por ejemplo, ser parte del club booster de la banda ayudará al niño y al departamento de música de la escuela. También es una forma excelente de conocer más acerca de la escuela.

Adoptar una actitud distante en lo que respecta a la educación de su hijo no es una opción.

Bicyclists see safety improvements

Residents sometimes call the intersection of 54th Street and University Avenue the eastern gateway to City Heights.

But for many, that gateway can be dangerous. Designed for motorists, and with pedestrians and bicyclists more of an afterthought, the intersection features freeway-style turns where drivers only have to slow down, not stop.

But change is coming. The city recently painted green bike lanes to help improve bicycle awareness and safety, and more improvements may be on the horizon.

The City Heights Community Development Corp. and others belonging to a group called the Built Environment Team have been working for more than two years to draw attention to the intersection’s dangers. The group identified it as a safety priority, especially after the Northgate Gonzalez Supermarket opened and attracted more pedestrians to cross the street.

Randy Van Vleck, the active transportation manager at the City Heights Community Development Corp., said the group convinced Ed Clancy, manager of the city’s bicycle initiatives, to install the safety feature.

The Built Environment Team is funded by The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities Initiative.
