Virtually every child in City Heights now has access to free dental care. With a fully equipped mobile clinic that includes everything that you’d find in a dentist’s office, La Maestra Community Health Centers is now offering free exams, x-rays, fillings, and more to any child in City Heights, La Maestra officials say. The mobile dental clinic can accommodate up to 25 dental exams and treatments daily, said Marty Stroud, La Maestra’s director of dental operations. “Everything that can be done in a dental clinic can be done in this mobile clinic,” Stroud said. “Fillings, root
canals, x-rays, cleanings, extractions. It is a fullyfunctional clinic.” The clinic is contained in a 40-foot vehicle manufactured by a Riverside County company. The $406,000 cost was covered by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration as part of the Affordable Care Act – an act also known as ObamaCare. It will cost La Maestra an estimated $400,000 annually to operate. The mobile clinic will offer more than dental care; it also includes a medical office capable of basic services such as blood-pressure exams, blood and urine

Youth programs. Maintenance of streetlights. Funding for neighborhood improvements. All of these and more are threatened if City Heights residents don’t vote, according to members of the San Diego Organizing Project, a nonpartisan, faith-based organization pushing to reverse the low voter turnout in City Heights and the rest of the newly formed City Council District 9. Dorothy Kwiat has been volunteering with the San Diego Organizing Project for 25 years. For much of that time, she has been part of the struggle to try to bring resources to poor communities of color. “The politicians will tell you what their agenda is, and tell you to
vote for them,” she said. Organizing Project members “interview thousands of people in the community and ask what their agenda is, and tell the politicians.” But for organizations such as the Organizing Project, packing a room isn’t enough for politicians any more, she said. “Now — this has never happened before — now (politicians) are saying we are not even going to come to your meeting because your people don’t vote,” Kwiat said. The San Diego Organizing Project aims to get 5,000 new and infrequent voters to the polls from

Programas juveniles.

When it comes to choosing a school for your child, know this: You have a choice. And if you plan to enroll your child in a San Diego Unified campus next fall, you should start doing your homework now. The U.S. Department of Education offers the following list of things a parent should look for at a school when choosing a campus for their child: high expectations; busy students; great teachers; a great principal; a vibrant parent-teacher organization; children who are neither invisible nor scared to be at school; a gut reaction that this is the school for your child; a rigorous curriculum; knowing that families like yours are welcome, and their concerns are acknowledged; being satisfied with the school’s results on standardized tests and school report cards.
