Obamacare: How it affects you

The impacts will be profound. That’s what backers of the Affordable Care Act say about the biggest government expansion of health care since Medicare was created in 1965.

And perhaps no place will be more impacted than City Heights where the California Endowment estimates 28 percent of the adult population is uninsured.

In fact, some 7,000 City Heights residents will be eligible for health care under the new Covered California health exchange,

according to figures from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, and an additional 9,000 could secure coverage through the expansion of Medi-Cal. Other benefits that will be launched Jan. 1: Insurance companies will no longer be able to deny coverage for preexisting conditions, including such things as pregnancy, heart disease or diabetes.

All health insurances in the county will include an array of preventative care services, including immunization vaccines.

Hoover High School boys’ basketball coach Ollie Goulston has stepped down from a program he helped lead to unprecedented heights.

In a Sept. 14 email he sent “to all friends of Hoover basketball,” Goulston said he was leaving the basketball program to pursue other opportunities.

Goulston’s varsity squad notched 255 wins in his 10 years at the helm, including a school record 31 victories last season. The Dartmouth alum led the Cardinals to four CIF championships, seven CIF

championship appearances and eight league championships. His squads also made three state Elite 8 appearances and 6 state Sweet 16 appearances.

The Cardinals are the only school in San Diego section history to have won 26 games or more for six consecutive seasons.

“I love the kids and I love the school and I really hope they can continue to build on what we’ve done,” he said in an interview.

sential services as regular doctor visits, mental health, emergency medical care and hospitalization costs, among other things. Gone will be lifetime and annual limits on coverage for essential health services.

And beginning Jan. 1, Medi-Cal coverage will be expanded to include individuals or families at or below 138 percent of the federal poverty level, or an income of almost $16,000 annually for an individual or roughly $32,000 annually for a family of four.

Statewide, approximately 1.4 million additional people will be eligible for Medi-Cal, according to studies done

by UCLA and UC Berkeley.

“When you start looking at what the Affordable Care Act means in City Heights, you’re talking about a big impact,” said Jan Spencley, executive director of San Diegans for HealthCare Coverage.

As of Dec. 31, people covered through the county Low Income Health Program will automatically be enrolled in the expanded Medi-Cal program.

Those who don’t qualify for MediCal will be able to purchase affordable insurance through the state run health insurance exchange, Covered California, and most will qualify for tax credits.

Depending on the type of plan selected, a single person earning between $17,235 and $22,980 annually, for example, could pay a monthly rate ranging from $57 to $121 with a $15 per doctor visit co-pay. Out-of-pocket costs could not exceed $2,250 each year.

“Under the Affordable Care Act, people will have better access to health

care and fewer will avoid seeking care until they have to go to the emergency room, Spencley continued. “It’s a form of security. You’ll be able to take care of your health – and your health is precious - you owe it to yourself and your family to protect it.”

The Affordable Care Act doesn’t just benefit consumers. Through the Small Business Health Options Program, businesses with between two and 50 employees will be able to purchase affordable health coverage, with many small businesses being eligible for a tax credit of up to 50 percent of their premiums.

Many reforms and consumer protections have already been enacted.

Since 2010, for example, children have been able to stay on their parents’ coverage until age 26. And those under the age of 19 cannot be denied coverage due to a health condition. Further, seniors on Medi-Cal now have coverage for an annual wellness exam and preventative services without cost sharing, as well as much better prescription coverage.

Perhaps ironically, most people who would benefit from the expanded coverage are uninformed of the Affordable Care Act. “A lot of people don’t understand that this is moving forward,” Spencley said. “Many mistakenly believe that the Supreme Court has overturned the law. I don’t think people really understand that we’re expanding coverage in this way.”

Consequently, many nonprofits and other groups are hiring staff to get the word out and start pre-enrolling people. Enrollment began Oct. 1 for coverage effective Jan. 1, 2014.

Queda mucho por hacer. Una encuesta de la Fundación Kaiser Family reveló que más de dos tercios de los estadounidenses sin seguro no cuentan con información suficiente para entender las reformas de la Ley de Atención Médica Asequible.

Casi 7 de cada 109 personas que ganan menos de $40,000 al año no tienen claro cómo esta ley puede afectarlos.

“Muchas personas no comprenden que este proceso está en marcha”, dijo Spencley.

“Muchos creen erróneamente que la Corte Suprema derogó la ley. No creo que todos conozcan la forma cómo se está expandiendo la cobertura.

Antes no se podía hacer mucho con la información, pero ahora pueden comenzar a comparar planes e inscribirse.”

Residents band together to make a difference

The first-ever, City Heights’ Resident Leadership Academy has concluded its months-long training with an action plan calling for several improvements that range from increased protection from stray dogs to making it safer for people to go for a walk in their community.

Those taking part in the Academy met over five months, including weekly sessions that lasted some two hours each. The effort fell under The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities program in City Heights, and it coordinated its efforts with the Mid-City Community Advocacy Network, City Heights Wellness Center, Scripps

Mercy Hospital and Rady Children’s Hospital.

Included in the group’s action plan is an effort to address the problem of coyotes and stray dogs in the area along 52nd and 53rd streets and Orange Avenue. Several public forms were planned, along with meetings with animal control officers and community-based organizations.

Another effort included setting up meetings with city officials and City Councilwoman Marti Emerald to improve Orange Avenue with new sidewalks, better lighting and implementation of traffic-calming measures.

At a recent celebration for the group, San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria praised the City Heights Resident Leadership Acad-

emy as “an amazing community resource” that “equips residents with the tools to have a positive impact on significant community concerns such as public safety, walkability, healthy food access, and community engagement.”

Previous Resident Leadership Academies have found success in National City, southeastern San Diego, Lemon Grove and Oceanside. Lemon Grove resident Racquel Vasquez used the skills she learned at a Resident Leadership Academy in that community to help win a seat on the Lemon Grove City Council.

Tips for a safe trip to school Now that classes are back in session, San Diego Unified School District officials are urging motorists and students to exercise additional caution around school campus.

Among the tips for those walking to and from school: • Do not cross the street alone if you’re younger than age 10.

• Never play in the road.

• Always try to walk on paths or sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks or paths, walk facing road traffic.

• Look both ways for danger before and while crossing the street.

• Dress in bright colors or wear reflective materials so drivers can easily see you.

Among the tips for motorists and their passengers: • Follow school traffic rules when dropping off students. Be aware of crosswalks.

• Every person riding in a car or truck needs his or her own seat belt to be fastened. Do not let passengers ride in storage areas or on other people’s laps.

• Children should always ride in a back seat restrained in a car seat or safety belt.

Among the tips for those riding their bikes: • Wear a helmet on every ride (state law).

• Ride so motorists can see you.

• Look both ways for oncoming vehicles before turning or crossing a street. Go only when it is clear.

• Watch out for potholes, cracks, rocks, storm grates, railroad tracks or anything that could make you lose control of your bike.

• Make sure your bike fits your height, weight and age.

Among the tips for those riding the bus to school: • Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled arrival of the bus. Stay out of the street while waiting and not engage in horseplay.

• Remain seated on the bus at all times and do not shout or distract the driver. Keep your head and arms inside the bus at all times.

• Make sure to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting on or off. Children should be aware that the driver has a “blind spot”—the area from the front of the bus to about 10 feet in front of the bus - and they should not walk in this area after disembarking.

San Diego Unified notes “it is important for parents to remember to always set a good example for their children, whether walking, riding or driving.”

NEWS BRIEFS A taste of the neighborhood Taste of City Heights is set for Oct. 25 at Que Huong Restaurant on University Avenue.

Taste of City Heights is an effort to get local residents to sample neighborhood eatery. Restaurant critic Troy Johnson pegged Que Huong on his Top 10 list in San Diego magazine last year, saying “Que Huong is the freshest, most flavorful, and generously portioned Vietnamese cuisine I’ve found.”

Housing affordability Community Housing Works is offering its help to residents who have experienced a short sale or foreclosure and are trying to get back on their financial feet. The nonprofit has several HUD-approved homeowner coaches available for one-on-one sessions. Clients meet with staff members, who can assess purchasing power and affordability, while reviewing finances and credit reports.

The nonprofit notes that the Federal Housing Authority’s ‘Back to Work Extenuating Circumstances Program’ now allows borrowers who lost their homes due to financial hardships to be eligible for an FHA mortgage after one year, instead of the previous three, as long as certain factors are met.

“Many of Community Housing Works clients have been sitting idly on the sidelines watching home prices and interest rates steadily creep up,” said Ali Tarzi, assistant vice president of Classes and Coaching at the organization. “All the while, they have been told that the credit damage from losing a home means years of being locked out of the housing market. This FHA program lets them get back into the market today.”

The Coordinating Council is the governing body for Mid-City CAN. The council meets monthly to discuss issues affecting the organization and community and develops processes and initiatives that will make the organization more effective.

It is a great leadership opportunity.

You get to learn the inner workings of an organization and how it operates. Collaborative Director Diana Ross reports to the council. She really looks to the council for input on different initiatives and things going on with Mid-City CAN. I’ve been on the Coordinating Council for almost two years. I chose to be a part of the Coordinating Council because I really support what Mid-City CAN does.

It is very in touch with residents in the community and really does a good job of bringing residents, organizations and businesses together to have a dialog. Outside of my involvement with the organization, I just wanted professional development to learn what it was like to be on a governing board. What really goes on behind the closed doors of an organization? How does it operate? What kind of big decisions does the CEO face?

If you are thinking about running, go for it because you’re going to learn a lot about how to run an organization and are going learn skills that you can use in any aspect of your life, even if you’re not planning on running your own nonprofit organization. You will still learn about leadership development, you’ll learn how to run meetings, how to plan events, and how to make big-picture decisions on the future of an organization. It also has really good networking opportunities. So if you are interested in City Heights or in community organizing you should do it.

It is not a huge commitment of time, but you can make a large contribution to the community.

EDUCATION BRIEFS New program connecting parents

San Diego Unified has a new web-based program to connect administrators, teachers, students and parents.

PowerSchool replaces Zangle, the district’s previous student information system that was nearly 10 years old; the company that supported Zangle stopped developing it and ultimately went out of business.

The district says PowerSchool is a user-friendly, webbased system that can enable students, parents, teachers and administrators to work together to improve student

achievement. “One of the features we are most excited about is the mobile App that will allow parents and teachers to access their student’s information from anywhere,” a school district statement says.

The district, however, experienced some glitches implementing PowerSchool when classes resumed in September, impacting the ability of a number of middle and high school students to readily get their schedules.

More than 12 million students in all 50 states and in 65 countries use PowerSchool.

City Heights Partnership for Children?

Friday, Sept. 13, was a lucky day for education advocates in San Diego, a day when advocates had the opportunity to learn and share with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, along with Jeff Edmondson, managing director of Strive, and Sammy Moon, senior advisor at United Way Worldwide.

Secretary Duncan gladdened many when he spoke about his vision of Promise Neighborhoods, a program aimed at providing access to great schools through strong systems of family and community support.

“Now, as much as we might like to, the federal government can’t fund Promise Neighborhoods everywhere. But the core ingredients of Promise Neighborhoods – evidence-based, place-based, and covering cradle-to-career – that holistic approach can be adopted everywhere... In San Diego, the United Way and Strive’s Cradleto- Career network are working with over 100 partners in the City Heights Partnership for Children.”

The City Heights Partnership for Children believes, as does Duncan, that “the key to ending poverty is education” and that all children deserve access to good education and opportunities that will help them be successful. Thus, with the community, we created a common vision and its strategic implementation.

As Edmondson reminded us,

“Everyone is part of the community and we have to remember that this definition may change depending on the situation.” For this reason, the Partnership for Children is constantly meeting, learning, and working with parents, educators, government and business leaders, social workers and others As a community, we have agreed that our work begins before a child is born, assuring that the child’s mother receives proper care and nutrition. It continues during a child’s early years, making sure that the child receives what he or she needs to be prepared for kindergarten. Our goal is that every child is reading at grade level by third grade and continues on track socially, physically, and mentally to do well in math, reading, and other subjects through eighth grade and on to graduation from high school. As a community, we want to assure that all students graduate from high school and are ready for college and/or jobs that are rewarding. Together, as a community, we can make this “Cradle to Career” vision a reality for all of our students.

“San Diego is resource rich, but innovation poor,” said Nick Macchione, director of the county Health and Human Service Agency. For this reason, the Partnership for Children’s focus is to bring together our resources so that we can better achieve our vision for suc-

Data is a critical part of this process. As Edmondson mentioned, “We should use data not as a hammer but a flashlight.” Data helps us discover what is working and how to build more. It informs us if we are on the right track to reaching our common goals. And if we are not, we use data to help us learn and correct what needs to be so we are.

To this end, we have partnered with the Children’s Initiative to help collect local, statistical data. In addition, the Partnership for Children spends a lot of time connecting and listening to the community to better understand the truth behind these numbers. We do this through conversations with parents, teachers, principals, and students; participating in the Hoover Cluster and other community meetings; engaging local practitioners and

The first-ever, City Heights’ Resident Leadership Academy has concluded its months-long training with an action plan calling for several improvements that range from increased protection from stray dogs to making it safer for people to go for a walk in their community.

Those taking part in the Academy met over five months, including weekly sessions that lasted some two hours each. The effort fell under The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities program in City Heights, and it coordinated its efforts with the Mid-City Community Advocacy Network, City Heights Wellness Center, Scripps Mercy Hospital and Rady Children’s Hospital.

Included in the group’s action plan is an effort to address the problem of coyotes and stray dogs in the area along 52nd and 53rd streets and Orange Avenue. Several public forms were planned, along with meetings with animal control officers and community-based organiza-

tions.

Another effort included setting up meetings with city officials and City Councilwoman Marti Emerald to improve Orange Avenue with new sidewalks, better lighting and implementation of traffic-calming measures.

At a recent celebration for the group, San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria praised the City Heights Resident Leadership Academy as “an amazing community resource” that “equips residents with the tools to have a positive impact on significant community concerns such as public safety, walkability, healthy food access, and community engagement.”

Previous Resident Leadership Academies have found success in National City, southeastern San Diego, Lemon Grove and Oceanside.

Lemon Grove resident Racquel Vasquez used the skills she learned at a Resident Leadership Academy in that community to help win a seat on the Lemon Grove City Council.

NEIGHBORHOODNEWS `World class’ YMCA coming to City Heights Formal groundbreaking on a new YMCA in City Heights slated for this month

The 53,000-square-foot facility will be built at the site of the old Pearson Ford dealership on El Cajon Boulevard and Fairmount Avenue, a couple blocks west of Hoover High School. The new Y will be nearly double the size of the current Copley YMCA on Landis Street.

“This will be a ‘world class’ facility that should prove to serve the area for decades to come,” actingMayor Todd Gloria said when the City Council approved construction last year.

The new Copley Price Family YMCA will dwarf the Landis Street building, which has served the community for more than half a century. Swimming facilities will comprise more than 22,000 square feet. A 12,000-square-foot soccer arena and 9,223-square-foot gymnasium are also planned, in addition to a roomy cross training center, a teen center and a child care center.

The effort evolved when Price Charities approached the Copley Y in 2010 with an offer to donate a 3.7acre, former Pearson Ford parcel of land to build a new YMCA. Price Charities purchased the former Pearson Ford site in 2009.

“The larger, more accessible location will offer a state-of-the art facility that will be named the CopleyPrice Family YMCA in recognition of the major support provided by the Copley and Price families to make this new Y possible,” the YMCA says on its website.

Brandi Collato, the department head of Membership, Marketing & Physical Activities, said the new facility will benefit everyone living in the Mid-City.

“Copley YMCA is a community center it is a community hub that allows everyone – regardless the race, income, religion, and background – to come and participate in a safe environment,” she said.

Collato said the Y “will offer financial assistance because the YMCA does hold strongly that they will not turn anyone away.”

Said employee Jovanni Jacobo: “The YMCA is an awesome place that helps families come together and is a good place because it also helps with financial assistance to those that have problems with affordability.”

“I like YMCA because it gives kids a place to stay after school when their parents can’t pick them up, and it’s also a place to socialize, do homework, and it ensures safety,” said Hoover High graduate Hui To. — Gloria, who grew up in the area, said the new YMCA would interconnect residents of Talmadge, City Heights, and Kensington – enhancing the sense of community in the area.

La construcción del nuevo YMCA en City Heights comenzará formalmente este mes.

La instalación de 53,000 pies cuadrados se construirá en donde estaba la concesionaria Pearson Ford en El Cajon Boulevard y la Avenida Fairmount, un par de cuadras al oeste de la Preparatoria Hoover, y será casi dos veces más grande que el YMCA Copley ubicado en la Calle Landis.

“Será una instalación de ‘clase mundial’ que prestará sus servicios en el área por muchas décadas”, dijo el actual alcalde interino Todd Gloria cuando el Consejo Municipal aprobó la construcción el año pasado.

El nuevo YMCA será mucho más grande que el edificio ubicado en la Calle Landis, el cual ha estado al servicio de la comunidad durante más de medio siglo. El área para natación incluirá más de 22,000 pies cuadrados. También se planifica la construcción de una arena de soccer de 12,000

pies cuadrados, un gimnasio de 9,223 pies cuadrados, un espacioso centro para entrenamiento múltiple, un centro para adolescentes y un centro de atención infantil.

By Adam Ward City Heights residents got a big win in June when the City Council voted to fund no-cost, youth bus passes.

The Mid-City CAN Improving Transportation in City Heights Momentum Team has been working for weeks with San Diego Unified and the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System to finalize how the passes will be distributed and determine ways to evaluate such things as whether the passes expand economic opportunity and help students stay in school.

“If it works, the hope is that it can be a little more permanent and universal in the San Diego region,” said Abdulrahim Mohamed, a volunteer at Mid-City CAN. As it stands, the free bus pass program is only a pilot and funding will run out at the end of the school year.

A $200,000 grant from the city, combined with $150,000 from the school district, will pay for 250 bus passes for students at Crawford, Hoover, Lincoln and San Diego high schools.

At the June 10 meeting when the passes were approved, City Councilmember Marti Emerald said she believes the passes could set a trend.

“I think that it could prove to be very successful and a model for the country,” she said Criteria for the bus passes includes low family income and need for transportation. Qualifying students will be required to attend an orientation and fill out a survey. At each school, 250 students will receive passes.

The passes will be pre-loaded onto special Compass Cards with the students’ pictures that will be valid from Nov. 1 through June 30.

The group evaluating the passes will include Strategic Community Consulting at UCSD and The Global ARC’s Bill Oswald.

Oswald said that it would be important to measure many different impacts because the passes wouldn’t necessarily directly increase attendance. The biggest benefit may be increased opportunities and participation in extracurricular activities.

“Students get to go to different places in San Diego that they haven’t gone to before,” Mohamed said. “They have better access to job opportunities.”

City Heights YMCA swim team shows championship form

The Copley Family YMCA swim team is making waves across San Diego. It won its second consecutive countywide championship in August.

Just three years ago, the Copley YMCA swim team had only three members and placed dead last in the San Diego County YMCA swim league. In December of 2012, though, the swim team applied for its USA swimming license to become a nationally recognized squad. Starting with just 41 swimmers, the Copley Y team entered the San Diego-Imperial County swim league as a new club, and in its first season, won the YMCA championship.

This past August, the Copley Family YMCA

team set out to defend its title. Boasting 62 swimmers – still only half the size of all the other competing teams – the Copley Family team took the San Diego-Imperial County championship once again. The team success was marked by 12 individual first-place finishes.

“We once called ourselves the best kept secret in City Heights,” says Ken Sol, Copley Family YMCA aquatics director. “But after our second championship year, I would say the secret is out.”

The Copley Family YMCA welcomes all children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 17 to join one of its year-round swim teams, and it offers two team options. The competitive swim team, dubbed the Sea Dragons, welcomes swim-

Striving to put students at the center

The national director for the movement that inspired the City Heights Partnership for Children visited City Heights recently and gave his vision for what the Partnership can accomplish.

Strive Network Director Jeff Edmonson told a gathering at Monroe Clark that historically adults have put the school at the center of the education universe.

“We do `spray and pray,’” Edmonson said. “We spray resources all over and pray good things will happen.”

Instead, he said, we need to put students at the center and surround them with all the resources they need.

In that way everybody (schools, nonprofits, businesses, etc.) can do what they do best, said Edmonson.

Edmonson said the recipe for success is to stop doing what doesn’t work and reallocate resources to what data has shown does work. He gave the example of a school in Cincinnati, Ohio, where the Strive Network began in 2006, that discovered that kids whose parents helped them fill out college financial aid forms had a much higher rate of attending college than those

whose parents didn’t. Once the school began emphasizing helping parents help their kids fill out financial aid forms, college entrance rates at the school doubled.

Edmonson said what he’s most impressed by with the City Heights Partnership for Children is the activity of the parents. He said City Heights, despite being five years newer than Cincinnati, is far ahead in its level of parent involvement.

Edmonson said there are three critical areas to make the Partnership a success:

Ask residents from other neighborhoods to describe City Heights, and words such as “ghetto” and “uneducated” may come to mind. Yet look at the statistics, and diversity is what makes City Heights unique.

At Hoover High School alone, some 32 different languages are spoken.

“There are many first generation Americans who come from all over the world.

For example, in one class alone, I have students from Cambodia, Vietnam, Eritrea, Burma, Mexico, Laos, Ethiopia, and Somalia,” said Ms. Owen, an English and History teacher.

Ashley Ly is among those making up the fabric of the community. She works two jobs, is involved in sports and maintains a grade point average of 3.8.

“I see students making it to college, help their family reach out of poverty, and giving back to their community at the end,” Ashley said.

In fact, she added, “City Heights is a diverse neighborhood full of hardworking people.”

According to city data, City Heights comprises several neighborhoods where more than 4 in 10 residents were born outside of the United States and where nearly 3 in 10 live in poverty – nearly twice the rate of the city as a whole. More than 2 in 10 people don’t speak English well or cannot speak the language at all.

City Heights is the American melting pot. The culture is dramatically expressed by the food we eat, clothing we wear and traditions we celebrate. Restaurants serving Mexican, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, African, Jamaican, Greek and European food dot the landscape. And events celebrating the Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian and Chinese cultures are common.

“I think the languages reflect the range of cultures that help make up the community,” Ms. Owen said. “I truly think people learn to tolerate different beliefs, religion, and languages because they interact with so many different cultures at school and throughout the community.”

A longer school year

San Diego Unified has added three days to the academic school year. Schools on a traditional calendar will recess for the summer on June 12; year-round schools will add the three additional days by shortening spring break.

Looking to serve

San Diego Unified is looking for parents to serve on any one of a number of committees. Advisory committees, a spokesperson says, “provide important public input to the Board of Education, Superintendent, principals and other staff on issues facing the school district.”

Committees meet once a month at the Ballard Parent Center in Old Town. Childcare and translation services are available.

Among the opportunities is the District English Learning Advisory Committee, which comprises representatives from each school’s English Learner Advisory Committee. The district committee is to advise the entire district on the programs and services that the district provides to English learners. Although the Employee Rights Center focuses on City Heights, it serves people throughout San Diego.

Huerta-Reyes has been working with City Heights residents since 1996 with different organizations. She knows that health issues among residents living here without proper documentation looms large.

She estimates that undocumented patients make up as many as 80 percent of the patients at places such as La

“Those are the people we want to focus on, the people that are going to be just in limbo and not know where to go for service,” she said.

El equipo de natación del YMCA Copley Family está levantando olas en todo San Diego. Ganó su segundo campeonato de natación a nivel del condado consecutivo en agosto.

Hace solo tres años, el equipo de natación del YMCA Copley Family solo tenía tres miembros y quedó en último lugar de la liga de natación del YMCA del Condado de San Diego. En diciembre de 2012, el equipo de natación aplicó para una licencia de natación de EE.UU. para ser reconocidos a nivel nacional. Con solo 41 nadadores, el nuevo club de natación del Y Copley participó en la liga de natación del Condado San DiegoImperial y durante su primera temporada, ganó el campeonato del YMCA. En agosto pasado el equipo del YMCA Copley Family se dispuso a defender su título. Con 62 nadadores —la mitad que los demás equipos en la competencia—el equipo del Copley Family ganó nuevamente el campeonato del Condado San Diego-Imperial. El éxito del equipo estuvo marcado por 12 primeros lugares individuales.

Time to give yourself a financial checkup

With Financial Planning Week from Oct. 7 to 13, there may be no better time than now for City Heights residents to give their finances a checkup.

People are encouraged to spend some time each day on one of the topics below to better understand their finances, plan for the future and access resources to keep them on the right track. Here is a suggestion for a possible weekly planner.

Monday: Set clear financial goals.

Financial goals are simply personal goals with a financial cost attached.

When establishing financial goals, use the S.M.A.R.T model (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely) and create action steps to complete them.

Tuesday: Develop a savings and spending plan. Set a budget. A savings and spending plan is a tool used to organize how much one earns and spends each month. It anticipates how much income is earned and how much is paid out, allowing one to identify ways to increase savings and establishing a clear idea of where money goes each month.

Wednesday: Maximize income.

Maximizing is defined as making the greatest or fullest use of something.

In this step, one can use a savings and spending plan to find spending leaks, determine needs versus wants and find incentive programs to help maximize income.

Thursday: Examine financial products and services available.

There are many different ways to handle money and places to keep it. Everyone should research local banks and credit unions to determine what works best for them and establish the correct checking and savings accounts.

Friday: Work on understanding credit. Credit is the foundation for one’s financial future. It is used by lenders, landlords, employers and other individuals or creditors to determine trustworthiness to repay borrowed money. Having good credit can help to rent or buy things, obtain a job, lease rental property, obtain insurance at a lower rate and more.

Saturday: Begin managing debt.

Existes muchas formas de administrar su dinero y lugares en donde depositarlo. Investigue los bancos y uniones de crédito locales para determinar lo que más les conviene y tener las cuentas de cheques y ahorros adecuadas.

Viernes: Esfuércese por comprender su historial crediticio. Su historial crediticio es la base de su futuro financiero. Es usado por entidades de préstamo, caseros, empleadores y demás personas o entidades crediticias para determinar su capacidad de devolver el dinero que pide prestado. In September, the Employee Rights Center marked its first anniversary since launching workshops to educate residents about immigrant and workplace rights.

Adriana Huerta-Reyes, the Rights Center’s community health educator, described a typical family she works with: the father lives in a household with four other families and works multiple jobs. Often he works in a physical job such as construction, and he uses heavy equipment that can cause physical pain and stress.
