Welcome We are Bristol’s Further Education College, providing technical and professional education to students across the city. Our Higher Education provision offers a high-quality, affordable alternative to university for many students who want to learn from expert lecturers, achieve higher and further their careers. Year after year, our higher education students’ results are outstanding and the feedback they give us is overwhelmingly positive. We welcome back many students throughout their professional lives to complete further degrees, higher apprenticeships and professional qualifications. Our Centres are located throughout Bristol and offer students a vibrant, inspiring environment to study in. Many of our higher education courses are validated by our university partners, the University of Plymouth, Bath Spa University and UWE Bristol These partnerships provide our higher education students with valued qualifications and a wide range of extra facilities to make the most of.

Why study at degree level with City of Bristol College? You don’t have to go to university to get a degree. We have been delivering higher education for more than 15 years, and when you study your degree-level course with us, you will benefit from smaller class sizes, teaching from expert lecturers and the option to study and work in a way that works for you.
Study at degree level
Our courses are validated by our university partners, UWE Bristol, Bath Spa University and University of Plymouth. As a student with these institutions, you will have access to university resources, too.
We have excellent standards
We have been awarded the UK Quality Assured mark to reflect the excellent standard of our higher education courses.
You will be taught by specialists
Our lecturers are experts in their fields, who continue to practice in their industries alongside teaching our higher education students.

Your view counts
We always want to give our students the best experience possible, and to do that we ask for regular feedback on all of our courses, modules and College facilities. You can also nominate and elect student representatives who will be your voice at course review meetings and student forums.

Study Plus individual learning support
Our Study Plus team offers tailored advice, assessment and support if you need help with your studies. Our friendly and supportive staff will work closely with your lecturers to ensure you have what you need to succeed on your course. If you have dyslexia, dyspraxia or another learning difficulty, we can provide you with specialist assessment and make access arrangements for your exams and assignments. Fees and funding Studying your university-level course at college is often far more affordable than at university, and there are plenty of financial support options to help you fund your studies. Below is a quick summary of all the options; you can find out more on page 75.
Student Finance
Like when studying a degree at university, students applying to our foundation degree courses may be eligible for tuition fee loans and maintenance loans from Student Finance. You do not have to start paying anything back to Student Finance until after you graduate and start earning more than £27,295 per year.
College support
We have a range of financial support available to our students. This includes our Higher Education Progression Bursary, a non-repayable grant for students who studied an eligible Level 3 course with us.
Government support
There is a range of government support available to students with children or other dependents, and to students who have disabilities. Details of these grants can be found on their respective websites.

Bath Spa University
City of Bristol College and UWE Bristol are working together to increase Bristol residents’ progression into higher education. Through this partnership, you can choose to study a course through the University but be based here at the College. We offer a variety of courses including education and health care.
We work in partnership with Bath Spa University to deliver the work-based Level 4 & 5 Foundation Degree in Early Years and Level 6 Childhood Studies top-up degree. These qualifications are a crucial part of a national drive to improve the career pathway options and qualifications for practitioners in the early years sector.
As a UWE Bristol student studying at City of Bristol College, you will benefit from both institutions’ strong links with industry and study a course which is designed to equip you for a successful career. Your course will be quality assured by the University, showing employers you have met their high academic standards. You will also have the opportunity to progress from your foundation degree to a full honours degree.
Considerable emphasis is placed on developing innovative and flexible methods of teaching and assessment, and students find the academic environment supportive and accessible. The University also has strong partnerships with early childhood settings, giving students access to high-quality industry insight and employment opportunities.

We have a long history of working in partnership with the University of Plymouth to offer degree-level study in counselling, creative arts therapies, media, graphic design, photography, and health and social care management. The University is renowned for high quality, internationally-leading education, research and innovation. As a partner college student, you can access online University services, use its library, electronic resources and learning support materials through its web-based student portal (including access to the Careers Service online careers information (myCareer)). Chartered Management Institute (CMI) The CMI creates leaders through management and leadership development training, qualifications, membership and research.
Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) A CIPD qualification is often a requirement for a future in people management.
Cambridge English Language Assessment The CELA is an important qualification for anyone hoping to progress their career as a teacher of English.
Ascentis Ascentis is an awarding body for access to higher education courses and is recognised by universities for further student progression.
National Counselling Society The society ensures all of our registrants are safe, competent and ethical practitioners. It is recognised by reputable counselling firms and is a requirement in the most prestigious.
Pearson Pearson is the UK’s largest awarding organisation, offering academic, vocational and work-based learning qualifications. It is a flagship provider which is highly valued in many industries.
Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) CIOB is the world’s largest and most influential professional construction management and leadership body. Members work worldwide in the development, construction and improvement of the built environment.
Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) CIM is the world’s largest community of marketers which support, represent and develop marketers, teams, leaders and the marketing profession as a whole. CIM qualifications are highly regarded by marketing professionals.
Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) AAT is a leading accounting body for professionals. Gaining the AAT qualification is the start of an accountancy career for anyone without any previous experience.
It is worth noting that we also offer many courses which although not nationally recognised, will certainly help you to develop new skills or progress in your chosen career. Qualifications explained
Qualifications explained We offer a variety of qualifications to suit all our students, and understanding the different types will help you to decide which course to study with us.
Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND)
These higher-level vocational qualifications are highly regarded within their respective industries, and can be studied over one or two years so you can combine work and study. Once you have completed your HNC or HND, you could top-up to a foundation or honours degree. HNCs usually earn a minimum of 120 credits; HNDs usually earn a minimum of 240 credits.
HN Flex
HN Flex courses are individual units which give the student a Certificate of Unit Credit, with the opportunity to progress onto a full Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND). They are a good choice for students who may be unable to commit to a full qualification, or want to upskill on a short course to advance their professional development.
Foundation Degree
A foundation degree is a higherlevel qualification consisting of 240 credits at Level 4 or 5. These courses are delivered in partnership with our university partners, and are designed to help students develop: Specialist knowledge and skills in your chosen industry sector Skills for employment such as reasoning, professionalism and work process management to help you reach supervisory or management level Enhanced general skills such as communication, IT and problem solving Upon completion of your foundation degree, you can choose to study a ‘top-up’ year with our university partners to convert your qualification to a full honours degree. Degree
A Bachelor’s, or honours, degree usually takes three years of fulltime study. They are designed to give students a thorough understanding of the subject and develop intellectual, analytical and communication skills. Level 6 degrees are highly valued by employers, and upon completion students can progress to a Master’s degree or equivalent.
Foundation Year/Year 0
These one-year courses are usually studied at the beginning of a degree by students who do not currently have the necessary qualifications to study the full degree course. Students may then have direct access to the degree course they have chosen.
Access to Higher Education
Access to HE courses are also one year in length, and designed for students who do not yet meet the entry requirements for a degree course. They usually cover a general subject area, and upon completion students can progress to degree programmes in that area.
Higher Apprenticeship
Higher apprenticeships combine on- and off-the-job training, and are designed with employers to give students the skills needed for higher-level positions. These courses vary in the length of time they take to complete, and upon completion students are awarded a degree-level qualification.

Access to Higher Education courses
Access to Higher Education courses Access to HE courses are one-year Level 3 courses designed for students who do not yet meet the entry requirements for a degree course. They cover a general subject area so that upon completion, students can progress to a more specific degree course in that field. Access to Higher Education courses are taught at our Ashley Down Centre and awarded by Ascentis.
Business Studies
The Business Studies Access course includes modules on Business, Statistics and Psychology. Possible degree subjects could include Business Studies, Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Communication Studies, Marketing and Event Management.
Engineering Science
The Engineering Science Access course includes modules on Maths, Engineering Maths and Physics. Possible degree subjects could include Physics, Astrophysics, Computer Science, Robotics, Prosthetics, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.
Environmental Science
The Environmental Science Access course includes modules on Environmental Science, Geography and Biology. Possible degree subjects could include Geology, Environmental Sciences, Ecology and Marine Biology.
Health
The Health Access course includes modules on Biology, Psychology for Health and Health Studies. Possible degree subjects could include Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Paramedic Science, Early Childhood Studies and Care Practice.
Humanities
The Humanities Access course includes modules on English Literature, History and either Psychology or Sociology. Possible degree subjects could include English, History, Sociology, Psychology, Politics, Law, Anthropology, International Relations, International Development, Education, Classics, Art History, Criminology, Liberal Arts, Journalism, Philosophy and Creative Writing.
Medicine
The Medicine Access course includes modules on Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. Possible degree subjects could include Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacy, Biochemistry or Physiotherapy.
Science
The Science Access course includes modules on Chemistry, Biology and either Maths, Physics or Psychology. Possible degree subjects include pure sciences or applied sciences such as Medicine and Health professions, Neuroscience, Astrology, Archaeology, Microbiology, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Forensic Science and Pathology.
Social Science
The Social Science Access course includes modules on Psychology, Sociology and either History or Statistics. Possible degree subjects include Psychology, Sociology, Social Policy, Education Studies, Anthropology, Criminology and Politics.
Social Work
The Social Work Access course includes modules on Social Work, Psychology and Health Studies. Possible degree subjects mainly include Social Work but could also include Youth Work, Social Policy and Housing.

Level 4 HN Flex Module The Business Module Level 4 course is part of the HN Flex programme, which allows students to study individual units and gain a Certificate of Unit Credit, with the opportunity to progress onto a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND). What you will learn
Where it can take you
You will explore the nature of business, how to meet the needs of customers, stakeholders and employees, and how external factors affect business performance. Subject areas include entrepreneurship and small business management, financial accounting, organisational behaviour and understanding and leading change.
After completing this course, students have the opportunity to progress to a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business. The course content also has applications across a wide range of industry sectors, so most students will take what they have learned into future employment.

This course gives students the required licence to work as an aircraft maintenance engineer. You will be required to complete 864 hours of training to achieve the qualification including in excess of 90% attendance. This equates to 12 hours a week (two days) for around 36 weeks.

Cost does not have to be a barrier to your achievement. Studying your universitylevel course at City of Bristol College is an affordable alternative to university, after which you leave us with the qualifications you need to progress in your career. There are plenty of funding and financial support options available.
Student Finance
If you are applying for one of our foundation degrees, the process of getting tuition and maintenance loans from Student Finance is the same as if you were going to university. To qualify, you must meet certain criteria like residency, previous study, age and whether the course meets the criteria for public funding. Your tuition fee loan is a loan for all eligible students paid directly to the College by Student Finance. You do not have to start paying anything back until after you graduate and start earning more than £27,295 per year. Your maintenance loan is paid to you and ismeans-tested, which means how much you get will depend on your household income and where you live. Higher Education Progression Bursary
City of Bristol College’s Higher Education Progression Bursary is a non-repayable grant allocated to students who study a full, eligible Level 3 course with us then enrol onto one of our higher education courses. The bursary is calculated as a percentage of the course tuition fees, and will be paid in three equal instalments to eligible students during the first year of study.

Financial Support Fund
This fund is to support students who are experiencing hardship and may not be able to complete their course without financial help from the College. The fund is limited and finite, and you must speak to a welfare officer before making an application to the fund.
Government grants
The government offers additional, nonrepayable support including: Parents’ Learning Allowance Childcare Grant Adult Dependents’ Grant More information on these can be found on the respective websites.
Disabled Students’ Allowance Students with a disability, mental health condition, long-term health condition or specific learning difficulty may be eligible for extra help through Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs). Available to full-time and part-time students, this allowance is nonrepayable and is not dependent on household income. The amount you are entitled to depends on your level of need.
