From the Mayor

Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate Independence Day at our annual celebration July 4 at the Buckeye Municipal Airport. This is one of my favorite events every year for many reasons, mostly because it shows we stay true to our small-town roots with free, family friendly events. Our Community Services Department continues to out-do themselves every year organizing these spectacular events.

I also want to thank everyone who drove the I-10 during ADOT’s two-year construction project. We now have a third travel lane in both directions and brand new interchanges at Miller and Watson roads. These improvements have helped traffic flow immensely, and I appreciate your patience as we all navigated the ever-changing lane restrictions.

Buckeye and water continue to be in the news, but our message remains the same - We currently have the water resources to sustain our existing customers and the projected growth that already have certificates of assured water supply from the Arizona Department of Water Resources.

Despite what you hear in the news, Buckeye's strategic location, and supportive business environment have made it an attractive destination for investment. Buckeye has become a hotspot for advanced manufacturing, providing a favorable environment for innovation, production and retail services.

A great example is the much anticipated grand opening of the Costco Wholesale store on the southeast corner of Verrado Way and I-10. City and Costco officials are projecting record crowds at this location from the start. We expect more retail stores and restaurants will quickly be announced to complete that shopping center soon.

As the city continues to evolve and embrace innovation, Buckeye is poised to further enhance its economic landscape, creating opportunities and prosperity for both our residents and businesses.

Even though it’s still hot outside, now is the time to register for some of Buckeye’s great fall sports leagues, camps and senior programs, and mark your calendars to attend more of our wonderful city events. Movies in the Park, Fall Break Camp, EON classes and the popular Halloween Carnival are just a few great examples of all the excellent programs the city offers to you and your family. Skyline Park Featured Programs

FULL MOON HIKE (407001)

Hike under the light of a full moon and learn about nighttime wildlife activity. Bring water, flashlight, and wear closed-toed shoes. Advance registration required and opens two weeks prior.

SKYLINE BIRDS OF PREY (407010)

Celebrate National Raptor Month and learn about incredible birds of prey during a one-hour presentation. Program includes interactions with owls, hawks, and falcons and an owl pellet identification activity station. Bring water and chair and wear sun protection.

24-HOUR DESERT SURVIVAL (407003)

Learn basic 24-hour emergency desert survival skills including what to pack in a survival kit, building a fire and shelter, and signaling for help. Program is structured for youth and adults. Bring water, sun protection, and chair.

A one-mile guided hiking adventure for youth to connect with the outdoors. We'll play hiking activities and go over basic Sonoran Desert facts. An adult must accompany each child. Bring water, sun protection, and wear closed-toed shoes.

DUTCH OVEN COOKING (407013)

Explore the craft of Dutch oven cooking. You will prepare a loaf of bread from scratch and partner up to prepare a main dish or dessert. You will leave the class with a full tummy. All supplies provided. Bring water, snacks, chair, sun protection, and wear closedtoed shoes. Registration closes Oct. 13.

COMPASS/NAVIGATION 101 (407018)

Learn the basic skills necessary to navigate through an orienteering course. Then travel on foot to find many destination markers in the park. To make the clinic fun, a real orienteering map of the park will be used. Advance registration is required for each participant.

VENOMOUS CREATURES OF AZ HIKE (407006)

Lear n about venomous creatures of the Sonoran Desert during a one-mile hike. Then switch on ultraviolet black light and to hunt for scorpions. Bring water, UV blacklight and wear sun protection and closed-toed shoes.

NATURE HIKE (407019)

If you enjoy hiking and find yourself asking, What plant is that? then this is the hike for you! This stop and learn presentation will offer interesting facts about plants and their special adaptations to life in the arid Sonoran Desert. Wear closed-toed shoes and bring sun protection and water.

YOGA HIKE (407007)

Each stop will focus on a different main chakra (energy centers in the body) starting at the root and finishing with the crown. No experience necessary. Bring water, sun protection and wear closed-toed shoes. Meet on bridge. Instructor: Julz

STARGAZING (407002)

Learn how to use a sky map, the names and meanings of the stars, see the constellations and listen to stories of the night sky. An opportunity to view the moon, planets, star clusters, nebula, galaxies and more through large telescopes will be available. Bring water, lawn chair, and a flashlight with a red lens option. Don't like to hike alone and want to learn more about Skyline trails? Join us for a moderate-grade hike each month with fellow hikers that love the great outdoors. Bring water, sun protection, and wear closed-toed shoe.

Click the Registration Button

You’ll find this button on the top of every page. Once clicked, you will be taken to an outside website where you will begin the registration process. Please note you MUST have an online account created in order to register for any programs.

STEP THREE:

Log In or Create an Account

Under the login section enter your username and password and select “login”. If you do not have an account select “Create account.” Please note when creating an account, make sure you select “Add member” this will give the option to add additional members to your household. The participant MUST be added to your household when creating the account or the option to sign them up will not be available.

STEP FOUR:

Search for Programs and Register

•Once you have logged in, under the search section, you will be given the option to search programs by category, keywords or activity number.

•Next, once a class selection has been made, select the class by clicking the green plus sign to the left of the class then click the “Add to Cart” option that appears at the bottom of the screen. Choose the family member you are signing up and “Add to Cart”. Repeat for each individual family member by selecting “Continue Shopping”.

•Once complete, click “Proceed” to check out and pay for your programs.

REFUND POLICY: All program cancellation/refund requests must be submitted at lease 4 days prior to the start date of the program unless otherwise noted. Cancellation requests due to medical reasons not submitted 4 days in advance are required to provide documentation to receive pro-rated refund. All requests are subject to $2 cancellation fee.

The B.A.S.E. program provides a safe and exciting place for children enrolled in Kindergarten – 8th grade, to be in out-of-school time. The mission of the Kid’s B.A.S.E. program is to provide an environment that keeps youth safe while preparing them for success. Our creative programming will enhance self-confidence, self-expression, social skills and cognitive skills while keeping youth physically active. B.A.S.E. is located at various campuses in Buckeye and regulated by the Arizona Department of Health Services. Program sites are open on early release days; however are closed on national holidays or when school campus is closed. Program accepts DES funding; if fee assistance is needed please contact the Department of Economic Security at 623-925-0095.

Monsoon storms can bring serious damage to your neighborhood including heavy rain, flash flooding, blowing debris, uprooted trees and downed power lines.

It is always best to stay inside during a monsoon – your safety depends on it!

After a storm, checking for damage to your home, car and neighborhood is essential too - but it’s no time for fun.

Remember, never drive through a flooded street either. Don’t Drown – Turn Around.

And while cleaning up: Bag and tie ALL trash, including yard waste.

SKYHAWKS BASKETBALL CLASS (402415)

This skill-intensive non-competitive program is designed for beginning to intermediate level players. It uses a progressive curriculum focusing on sportsmanship and teamwork while teaching the fundamentals and skills of the game through games and drills. We offer classes that focus on dribbling, shot technique, passing, and teamwork. Adjustable hoops and appropriately-sized basketballs are used for this age group. Parent Participation required for ages 2 and younger. All equipment provided. Program presented on indoor courts. No class Nov. 22.

BASEBALLTOTS (402413)

Baseball Tots classes focus on fine and gross motor skills as well as body control. We teach all the baseball basics, such as throwing, catching, hitting and running control. No gloves or bats. Parent Participation required for ages 2 and younger. No class Nov. 11 & 25.

CPR & FIRST AID (402501)

Learn CPR for adults, children and infants and how to deal with emergencies like bleeding, shock, and burns. This program satisfies OSHA and state childcare licensing requirements. Receive a 2-year certification after the successful completion of course.

Classes focuses on developing motor skills, self-confidence for younger age groups, core skills and an element of light competition for older age groups. BABYSITTING SAFETY CLASS (402508)

This class equips students with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to care for infants and children. They learn about being responsible for a child’s wellbeing and safety, handwashing, diapering and feeding practices, and what to do in an emergency. Includes workbook and 2-year babysitting certification after successful completion of course.

MARTIAL ARTS FENCING

JUDO (402005)

Learn basic Judo which consists of throwing and grappling. Judo develops self-discipline and respect for oneself and others. New students need to purchase a Judo uniform. Information will be available on the first day of class. $60 National Judo Membership Fee due first day of class to the instructor for all new registrants. Additional testing fees may be collected by the instructor if one chooses to test.

Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate is a traditional Karate style founded by Chojun Miyagi. Goju Ryu emphasizes fitness, courtesy, and self-discipline. This class uses the physical parts of karate to make our minds and our hearts stronger. No experience necessary.

BEGINNER FENCING (402020)

En Garde! Join us in learning one of the first modern Olympic sports. This class will develop a basic knowledge of the sport of fencing. Students will learn elementary footwork and bladework; gain an understanding of fencing strategies and rules. Student should wear athletic shoes and comfortable clothing. We emphasize safety and provide all fencing equipment. Additional $15 annual USA Fencing membership paid directly to https://member.usafencing.org/ with EWA Fencing, LLC affiliation selected.

GOJU RYU KARATE – INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (402009)

Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate is a traditional Karate style founded by Chojun Miyagi. Goju Ryu emphasizes fitness, courtesy, and self-discipline. This class uses the physical parts of karate to make our minds and our hearts stronger. Instructor approval required, or two months of recent experience, or age 18+.

This program is designed for fencer’s ages 9+ who want to start competing at the local and regional level. SPECIAL OLYMPICS SWIM

Special Olympic athletes will train twice weekly in the sport of swimming. Participants will learn to refine swim strokes, sportsmanship, and teamwork in preparation to represent the city at the State Swimming Championship, in the fall. This is a competitive sports league and all athletes must be able to swim independently. Schedule is subject to change. Special Olympic Athlete Medical & Consent Form and Athlete’s Code of Conduct are required to participate.

Swimming laps is an excellent way to strengthen muscles and increase cardio endurance at your own pace.

WATER AEROBICS

Walking, running, jumping and a variety of aerobic movements are performed in the shallow end of the pool to increase heart rate, providing a cardiovascular and strength-building workout.

This special time is strictly reserved just for parents and little swimmers five years and under to enjoy the shallow beachfront pool including water features.

ADULT CO-ED SOFTBALL LEAGUE

Let’s get dirty! Season includes double-header round robin league play with a post season single-elimination tournament. Teams will play two game times per night with no new inning started after 50 minutes of accelerated play (each batter starts with a one and one count). Teams may have a minimum of 10 players and a maximum of 18 players on their roster. Rosters must be complete at time of registration.

Mandatory Manager's meeting is Wednesday, September 6 at 6 p.m.

Minimum of 6 teams required to run league, maximum of 8 teams.

Registration starts Monday, August 21.

Returning Team Registration starts August 14.
