SWIM LESSONS
Choosing the appropriate level...
Youth should be registered for a level based on their swim ability. Please read the descriptions of skills and prerequisites needed before the start of each class in order to determine which level is best for your youth. Register for the lessons by the weekday, Saturday, or Sunday sessions. Makeup sessions are not available. Come visit our Swim Assessments on March 4 to help determine which level is right for your youth. You can register at (shorturl.at/chozH). Please bring a swimsuit and towel to the assessments.
Parent Tot (6 mo–3 YRS)
Welcome all parents/guardians and tots who would like to dip their toes in and explore swimming! In this beginner class we introduce your child to the water and all the fun things you can do. Parent and child will both be in the water with the instructor guiding you through floating, blowing bubbles, going underwater, assisted jumps into the water, and focusing on how to be safe in the water. Please remember to take your child to the restroom before lessons. “Accidents” in the pool are a major disruption and require complete closure of the pool. Children who are not potty trained are required to wear a swim diaper.
Preschool Level 1 & 2 (3-5 YRS)
We welcome all swimmers who are new to swimming, getting in the water for the first time, or are scared or nervous of swimming. This class focuses on water safety and getting your child comfortable in the water. We learn how to submerge their face under the water, blow bubbles, bobbing, supported floating skills, water entry and exit, and arm and leg movement with support. All students must be able to hold onto the pool wall with two hands and be a minimum age of 3. This class runs in the 3 ½ to 5 feet depth in the pool. Prerequisites: Minimum age of three (3); Must be able to hold onto the pool wall with two hands without support
Level 1 (6+ YRS)
All swimmers joining Level 1 should be comfortable in the water and able to easily submerge their whole body and face under the water. Building on the motions learned in Preschool 1 & 2, swimmers will be introduced to basic front and back swim strokes, floating, rolling in the water, treading water, and learning side breathing. A large focus will be on kicking and arm motions and putting those together along with pushing off from the wall and diving for toys. This class runs in the 3 ½ to 5 feet depth in the pool. Prerequisites: Passed Preschool Level 1 & 2. Must be able to hold onto the pool wall with two hands without support; Must be comfortable in the water and putting their face underwater.
Level 2
Swimmers jump into the pool or slide in from the side at the start of each class to get them warmed up and comfortable entering the water with minimal support. In Level 2, we focus on freestyle (front crawl) and backstroke as well as streamline glides into kicking and swimming. Swimmers will also dive underwater for rings, open their eyes underwater, and continue to build up their treading skills. Students in this level are able to be more independent in the water and need minimal support when completing skills. This class runs in the 5 to 9 feet depth in the pool. Prerequisites: Passed Level 1; Must be comfortable in the water and putting their face underwater; Must be able to swim half length of the pool without stopping (15 yrds); Must be able to enter the pool and learn skills without physical support.
Level 3
Advanced swimmers join us in Level 3 where we focus on increased endurance and strength in swimming. All swimmers should feel comfortable entering and exiting the pool independently by stepping or jumping in from the side without support. We focus on the smooth transition from gliding to swimming for freestyle (front crawl) and backstroke as well as learning dolphin, breastroke, and side stroke kicks. Students build up their treading skills, learn sitting dives into the water, and swim lengths across the pool. This class runs in the 5 to 9 feet depth in the pool. Prerequisites: Passed Level 2; Must be able to swim freestyle (front crawl) and backstroke across the entire length of the pool without stopping (25 yrds); Must be able to enter the pool and learn skills without physical support.
Adult Swim Lessons (18+)
We welcome all adults (18+ yrs) who are interested in learning how to swim or improve their swim skills. This class focuses more on what you’d like to learn with emphasis in water safety. Whether you’d like to learn how to swim freestyle (front crawl), backstroke, breastroke, or butterfly, get more comfortable in kicking across the pool, or want to focus on treading and feeling comfortable in the deep end, this class is a great way to learn how to swim!
On the first day of each class for Preschool Level 1 & 2, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 students will be tested to make sure they are registered and placed in the right class. Please use our prerequisites to help determine what swim lesson level is right for your youth. In the event that your youth is registered for the wrong level, we will be able to make accommodations to move them to the right level if there is space in the correct class and there is no waitlist. If there is a waitlist for the class, you will be refunded for the registered class and will not be able to continue with the registered level or the correct level. If you have any questions about which level your youth belongs in, please call Liz Simonovich at (408) 866-2160 or send an email to elisabeths@campbellca.gov

Refund and Transfer Policy
All cancellation or transfer written requests must be made to the Recreation Office with at least a 5 business days’ notice prior to the start date of the activity. A $10 cancellation fee per activity (i.e. week of camp or swim lesson) per person will be deducted from the refund. A $2 cancellation fee per flex activity day (i.e. each date out of a series of flex fitness activities) Cancellations or transfers with less than 5 business days’ notice will NOT receive a refund or transfer. Online request forms available at campbellca.gov/recreation. Medical emergencies are exempt from this policy; however, a signed and dated statement from your doctor is required and must be provided within six (6) weeks of the activity start date. Separate policies apply to fitness passes, sports leagues, trips, facility reservations, Campbell Recreation Pre-school, Wave Swim Team and Heritage Theatre events. Please inquire before registering or purchasing tickets for these activities and events.
A minimum number of participants is required to hold a class. When enrollment is low, the Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel a program. Full refunds are given when a class or program is cancelled by the Recreation Department.
Waiting Lists
Waiting lists are established once a class is filled. If a vacancy occurs more than two working days prior to the start of the class, waiting list names will be called and/or emailed and given a limited time to register for the vacancy. Less than two business days before class starts, openings may be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
Age Requirements
The participant must be the indicated age by the starting date of the class. Proof of age may be required for some programs (i.e. pre-school, 50+ classes).
Campbell Recreation’s Satisfaction Guarantee
The staff and the instructors of the Recreation and Community Services Department are confident that they can provide the best quality recreation experience available. Customers must submit a Satisfaction Guarantee form available at campbellca.gov/recreation. Fitness passes, adult sports leagues, trips and Heritage Theatre tickets/shows are not included. Other restrictions may apply.
