Through videos, group discussion, and hands-on practice you’ll learn teamwork, rescue, surveillance skills, First Aid, CPR/AED, and other skills. Successful completion results in a two-year certification in lifeguarding.

Hung Gar Kung Fu

Hung Gar Kung Fu is a southern Chinese martial art training created for military defense in the southern Shaolin Temple. Hung Gar is centered on coordination, conditioning, discipline, and fighting application. Instructed by Michael Quam.
Capoeira Afro-Brazilian Dance & Martial Arts

Capoeira (pronounced cap-oh-air-uh) finds its roots deep in the culture of slavery in Brazil. Capoeira was a way for them to blend their past culture with their newfound culture in Brazil. The movements reflect the dances of northern Africa, and the martial arts were a way for the slaves to stay limber and practice self-defense. The movements of capoeira are like zumba, gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do, and African dance all rolled into one! Instructed by Michael Quam.
Hung Gar Kung Fu Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean art of hand and foot fighting. This is a useful way for you to learn the art of self-discipline, mental preparation, concentration, and self-control. Various kicking and punching techniques, correct body position and selfdefense will be covered. Instructed by Josh Conley.

Join us Tuesday evenings for dinner and activities. The MFC is the place for teens to hang out and interact in a safe, fun environment that promotes diversity and empowers youth to reach their potential. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

LGBTQ+ Support Groups

Youth and adult support groups are for community members who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, +plus. The MFC is a place where anyone can feel free to be themselves without concern about being treated differently because of sexual-orientation and/or gender identity/expression. Groups are led by volunteer adult mentor Indigo Channing. Folx will find support from peers who are having similar experiences. MFC Food Pantry

Thanks to a partnership with St. Stephen’s Food Bank/River Bend Food Pantry, the MFC can distribute free food to families in need. We serve 75-100 families at each pantry.
After-School Teen Hang Out Free

Hey Teens! Come hang out after-school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Enjoy a snack, meet other teens, play games, access our WiFi and use of our computer lab. Join us for a celebration of African cultures in the Diaspora. Learn how African cultural heritage has spread and continues to thrive in many communities around the world, from the African continent to the Caribbean to Dubuque. Attendees will enjoy exhibits, a fashion show, African dance and games and a taste of African food. The event is open to the public and is in partnership with local colleges and universities. Registration is not required, but space is limited.
STEP: Summer Teen Empowerment Program Free
Youth Entering Grades 8 - 11 in Fall of 2022 Six Week Program: Monday - Friday, June 20 - July 28 Morning Session: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. MFC Afternoon Session: 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. 1157 Central Ave.
STEP is a service-learning based program focused on developing life skills with an emphasis on community building, workforce readiness, and social/emotional learning. Youth can earn up to $500 and a high school credit! Apply online at www.mfc.org starting March 19.
