Create Your Own Comic Contest

All Ages Jan. 1-24

Create a one-page comic and earn the chance to win fabulous prizes! The contest will have four age brackets: ages 6 and under; ages 7-12; ages 13-17; and ages 18 and up. Entry forms are available at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library, the Dubuque County Library, and the James Kennedy Public Library. Winners will be announced on Monday, Jan. 31.

Celebrate your favorite superheroes or be your own superhero during JanFanCon. Visit the Children’s Department anytime this week to make and take your own superhero mask!

Ice Exploration

Ages: 6 - 12 yrs. Monday, Jan 10 4 p.m. Registration Required

It’s time for some ice-cold fun! Find the best way to excavate objects from ice using various tools. This activity helps develop problem solving skills, patience, and perseverance. Dragon Appreciation Party

Ages: 7 - 12 yrs. Saturday, Jan. 15 1 p.m. Registration Required

Celebrate all things dragon by playing dragon games, making dragon crafts, and voting for your favorite dragon. You can even come dressed as a dragon!

Community Square Art Project

All Ages Feb. 1 - 28 Registration Not Required

Celebrate National Library Lovers Month by helping us beautify the Children’s Department with a collaborative art project! Decorate a square and add it to the display so we can see how colorful our community can be.

Cookie Cutter Bird Feeder

Ages: 10 - 17 yrs. Wednesday, Feb. 2 4 p.m. Registration Required

Celebrate Feed the Birds Day by making bird feeders! Hang your bird feeders up at home and take pictures of the birds that stop by. Share your photos on social media and remember to tag @CarnegieStout.

Name Bracelets

There’s no school today, so come to the library and make name bracelets with your friends!

Bristlebots

Ages: 7 - 12 yrs. Monday, Feb. 7 4 p.m. Registration Required

A bristlebot is a simple robot created from a toothbrush and a vibrating motor. We’ll learn how to innovate and use our creativity to customize our bots, and maybe even race them with friends.

Art Exploration: Color Field Painting

Create your own color field painting inspired by Alma Woodsey Thomas’s iconic “Resurrection” piece.

Heartland Sings Concert

Ages: 6 yrs. and older Saturday, Feb. 12 2 p.m. Registration Required Dubuque Arts Council and the Carnegie-Stout Public Library welcome Heartland Productions, a non-profit vocal arts organization dedicated to changing lives through song and inspiring audiences through exceptional cultural, entertaining, and educational programs.

Homemade Chia Pets

Design and sculpt a creature out of clay with living “fur” or “hair” that grows from chia seeds. Registration required.

Bridge to Reading Picture Book Award

Ages: Kindergarten and younger Feb. 1 - Apr. 30

The Bridge to Reading program and its Picture Book Award promotes reading to children to help develop early literacy skills and a life-long love of reading. With the help of an adult, children in kindergarten and younger can vote for their favorite book from Feb. 1 to Apr. 30. A list of nominated picture books and voting ballots are available at www.bridgetoreading.com or the Carnegie-Stout Public Library. The winner will be announced in May.

Bunny Scavenger Hunt

Spring bunnies are hiding all around the children’s area! Pick up a scavenger hunt worksheet at the Children’s Help Desk, find the nine bunnies dressed up as book characters, and then submit your entry for a chance to win a prize!
