Greetings! As City Manager, I welcome you to review our Program Guide highlighting the wide range of events and activities the entire family can enjoy in Suffolk this spring and summer courtesy of the City’s Library, Parks & Recreation and Tourism teams. With the weather providing ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, the Program Guide reflects our continued return to regular activities by bringing people together to have fun and learn while being active at the same time. Be sure to put our annual National Night Out event on your calendar for Tuesday, August 2, 2022. This Going Away Party for Crime further illustrates the bond between Suffolk citizens and Public Safety personnel to work together for the greater good. Suffolk continues to be a great place where one can live, work and play. The coming months offer the availability of events, tours, and programs to find out more about our City, both right in your own backyard or across our 430 square miles of space. There is something to do for everyone! The phrase “It’s a Good Time to Be in Suffolk” rings true year round but especially at this time of year where Mother Nature helps us reconnect with our environment and treasure all Suffolk has to offer. Albert S. Moor II, P.E. City Manager

CITY OF SUFFOLK - TOURISM FACILITIES
Suffolk Visitor Center & Pavilion
524 N Main Street 757-514-4130 visitsuffolkva.com Sun - Sat: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Overlooking the Nansemond River, the provincial Roman Revival style structure with its very tall Tuscan columns was an impressive site for early travelers arriving on the river. The former Nansemond County Courthouse (1840) is the third such structure on this site at the busy intersection of Main Street and Constance Road. Two previous courthouse buildings were destroyed by fires. During the Civil War, the courthouse was reportedly used as barracks for Union soldiers as the neighboring Mills Riddick home on its south side served as Union Army headquarters. The building remained in service as a courthouse until the completion of the Mills Godwin Courts Complex in 1998. Today, the building retains its commanding presence and historical significance as the Suffolk Visitor Center. The first floor provides an exhibit gallery highlighting the history of Suffolk and the Great Dismal Swamp, a greeting and information area, and a gift shop. The second floor houses municipal offices for the Department of Economic Development and Division of Tourism.
Seaboard Station Railroad Museum
326 N Main Street 757-514-4135 suffolktrainstation.com Sun - Sat: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
This restored Main Street Station, originally built in 1885, has remained basically unchanged over the years and displays a 2-room HO-scale model of Suffolk in 1907 that was built by the Tidewater Division of the National Model Railroad Association. The Queen Anne style building is reminiscent of the Victorian age and has an interesting tower with a beautiful, walnut, spiral staircase. Many original features were saved and restored such as the doors, windows, coffered ceiling, fireplace and porch. The museum contains a collection of items including bells from steam locomotives, a light from a steam locomotive tender, cast iron and concrete signs, railroad lanterns, railroad tools, as well as a unique collection of smaller items, including silver items used in dining cars, office items used in the agent’s offices, and advertising items. The museum features railroad memorabilia and changing exhibits.

PARKS & RECREATION - VOLUNTEERS EAGLE SCOUT PROJECTS
VOLUNTEERS AND INTERNSHIPS Are you interested in volunteering or completing and internship with the City of Suffolk? We work to match our volunteers and interns with opportunities that fit their interest, talents, knowledge and skills. Volunteers and interns are a valuable asset to the community and assist us in creating quality programs, activities and events and help our community shine!
Every year Suffolk Parks & Recreation is happy to work with volunteers to enhance services and programs that are offered to the community. Over the past year, the department has been fortunate enough to work with several Eagle Scout candidates on their projects. Ross Roberts, an Eagle Scout, was able to help us transition a picnic area into a more ADA accessible location. Ross was able to help create a parking area, a walkway and pad with a picnic table that increased accessibility to this scenic spot at Lone Star Lakes Park. He worked with our Principal Planner to come up with the design and secured help from several volunteers. The project was completed in June of 2021. Nicholas Newman an Eagle Scout with Troop 259, worked with our team at Sleepy Hole Park to help renovate the horseshoe pit area at the park. Nicolas was able to repaint fencing, benches, backboards and make improvements to the gates and surrounding area. The horseshoe pits are tournament ready and much improved after the enhancements made possible by Nicholas’ project. This project was completed in September of 2021.
School clubs, civic groups, scouts, individuals and interns are welcome. Volunteers and interns receive valuable training and job experience, socialization, a great volunteer environment, career enhancement, recognition, and the opportunity to meet and assist others. For more information contact Jason Pittman, CPRP, Recreation Supervisor by: Email: jpittman@suffolkva.us Fax: 757-514-7275 Phone: 757-514-7268 For list of volunteer opportunities, please visit our website at www.suffolkva.us and follow the “volunteer tab”.
Current Eagle Scout projects include the renovation and replacement of a footbridge at Sleepy Hole Park and the addition of artificial fish habitats that will be deployed at Lone Star Lakes Park this spring and summer. Eagle Scouts work hard to plan, raise funds, provide materials, coordinate volunteers, and implement their projects. These efforts aid staff and offer added enhancements that are a wonderful benefit to the community. We are proud of each of these volunteers and the continued contributions that they make!

While Mills Riddick’s contemporaries may have mocked his Greek Revival home when it was built in 1837, the house now stands as a beautiful reminder of the past and is one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions. The impressive structure features striking architectural details. The five frieze band windows across the front of the house are rarely seen in eastern Virginia. The front of the mansion is bricked in Flemish bond, and double chimneys rise from both ends of the stately historic landmark. Slender columns of the Greek Revival period frame the main entrance. The interior showcases intricately carved moldings and elaborate ceiling medallions throughout the house. Riddick’s Folly has four floors, 21 rooms, and 16 fireplaces. All four floors are open to the public. The building features elegantly furnished double parlors, a gentleman’s library, and adult and children’s bed chambers. Also open are the laundry, dining rooms, and kitchen. Registered with the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission and the National Register of Historic Places. During the Civil War, Riddick’s Folly served as headquarters for the Union Army.
