Celebrating Red Cross Month

March 2023 is recognized nationally as Red Cross Month. On April 5, 2023, Mayor McConnell presented a proclamation to Nanette Shamieh, Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region Community Partnerships Regional Preparedness Lead and Vincent Valenzuela, Red Cross Executive Director, North Bay Chapter to recognize Red Cross Month. The presentation was delayed to April because March was an incredibly busy month for the Red Cross due to providing emergency assistance.

The American Red Cross is a congressionally chartered, 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, that prevents and alleviates human suffering during emergencies. The Red Cross depends on the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. They provide disaster relief, blood services, international services, service to the armed forces and training and certifications. For more information go to https://www.redcross. org/

The mission of the SIOV club is to give women and girls the opportunity to reach their full potential and live their dreams… no matter what their past includes or their financial restrictions may be. In order to support this mission, Soroptimist International of Vallejo invites you to join us as a sponsor and an attendee as we host our signature Winemakers Dinner “A Night Under the Stars in Vallejo - Where Dreams Come True” on Saturday, May 20, 2023 from 6 pm - 9 pm.

We are excited to feature an elegant five-course dinner paired with selected wines from Sentivo Vineyards & Winery, owned and operated by Helen Pierson and family, local business owners of Medic Ambulance Service.

Dinner tickets are $120 per person and are limited to 150 tickets.

For the past two pandemic years, our club has hosted our Wine Makers Dinner virtually. Our goal this year is to surpass the last two years, and raise over $80,000 to be given back in scholarships and awards in the coming year. With your help, we can make it happen! Masked Male with Gun arrested by VPD

On April 15, 2023, the Vallejo Police Department received a call from a victim stating a neighbor on the 100 block of Ladera Dr. was wearing a gas mask and pointed a firearm at him. The male pulled the trigger while pointing the firearm at the victim, but the firearm did not fire.

Officers arrived and quickly confronted the male wearing the gas mask in front of his house. Our officers repeatedly pleaded with the male to surrender and comply with their demands, but he refused.

Once it was clear that the individual would not comply with our officers' demands, our officers

decided to go hands-on with the male. When the male was preoccupied yelling at officers, another officer tackled him from behind. It took five officers to overcome the male's resistance and remove the loaded firearm from his possession.

VPD officers arrested the male, who was subsequently booked into the local jail.

This was an extremely dangerous call for service which could have resulted in a loss of life for the victim, the male, and our officers. Thankfully the firearm jammed and nobody was seriously injured during this call for service.

Thank you to our few dedicated officers who constantly put their lives on the line to protect those in need and help make Vallejo a safer place to work and live!

Celebrate Earth Day and enhance one of Vallejo’s most beautiful waterways! Join us at Blue Rock Springs Creek for a cleanup throughout the creek corridor.

Park for free at the Wardlaw Dog Park lot, then follow the path behind the dog park and cross the bridge. Wear comfortable clothes, sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen, and gloves. It’s a familyfriendly event (if you are under 18, you must be accompanied by an adult). We’ll provide tools, buckets, water and refreshments.

Girl Scouts of Vallejo lead with Service

In honor of Global Volunteer Month, the City would like to highlight a group that is doing excellent volunteer work in the Vallejo Community.

Over the winter of 2022-2023 the City of Vallejo had the pleasure of working with Girl Scout Troop 20067 of Vallejo to support the success of the Extreme Weather Centers, often referred to as the warming centers. The Girls Scouts committed to providing a hot meal at every opening. Even with an extreme winter that prompted 25

openings as of April 2023, they consistently delivered hot soup and other snacks, which was greatly appreciated and anticipated by those utilizing the centers. The Girl Scouts have organized soup prep days and prepared soup during troop meetings, which they delivered to the center when it opened. In addition to providing soup, the younger members worked with an ER nurse to prepare first aid kits for the Extreme Weather Center guests.

Girl Scout Troop 20067 has existed for 11 years and currently has members from 2nd grade through high school who have consistently committed to supporting the unhoused community in Vallejo. The Girl

Scouts have knitted scarves, collected coats and socks, put together blessings bags, donated handwarmers, dog food and meals to unhoused neighbors through organizations such as Vallejo Together, A Hand Up, and other community groups.

The troop is girl-led and over the past few years have been successful in bringing the diverse interests of all its members into the work that they do. The troop has been keen in identifying problems in the world, and together do research to come up with and implement solutions. For example, the girls learned that during the wildfires in Northern California many people lost their pets during emergency evacuations. In response to this, the troop organized a microchipping event to help increase access to this critical service. This solution will allow for individuals and families to more easily be reunited with their pet if another emergency were to occur or if the pet ran away. Additionally, they have placed flags at Sunrise Cemetery for Veterans Day and Memorial Day with other scouts , and worked on combatting drought and pollution and doing community clean-ups.

Overall, the purpose of the Girl Scout program is to produce girls with courage, confidence and character. Every troop interprets and focuses on different projects. In Troop 20067, the girls are focused on local service projects and tackling different societal issues. With the skills they gained and the community that they form, they can transition into adulthood knowing that they can make change. Local troop leader Erin Tator says that she hopes that the girls enter “the world knowing they are

a powerful force and can impact anything they choose.” The impact is also deeply felt by the girls, Elizabeth Baker (age 10) says that she enjoys making new friends and appreciates learning about goal setting, decision making, money management and business ethics.

The City of Vallejo values the contribution of the Girls Scouts of Vallejo, Troop 20067 and is eager to continue to partner with them in the future. We would like to wish them the best of luck on their current and future projects in the City.
