Hello! My name is Anjo Brian Armendi and I serve Circle K
at University of California, Riverside as the Newsletter Chair of the 2018 to 2019 term! For this newsletter, I am very excited to showcase what our club has been up to for the past summer term! Throughout the summer, Circle K at UCR was able to accomplish many service projects and events. Although our club traditionally struggles greatly during the summer in comparison to our previous terms in Spring and Fall, Summer was nonetheless a spectacular season! From MDA camp to Feeding Homeless at ISNAN, I hope that the newsletter can truly capture and illustrate what our club is capable of accomplishing!
Yours truly,
Anjo Brian Armendi

Hello Everyone! My name is Vanessa Kumnoonsate (come-
noon-set in case you were curious!) and I’m the president of Circle K International at UC Riverside for the 2018-2019 term! As a little introduction, I’m currently a 4th year Psychology major w/ an Education minor! A little fun fact about me is that I’m actually from Northern California, specially Cupertino, CA (it’s where Apple Inc. is located)!! I’ve been in Circle K ever since I started my college career and I’ve loved all the memories I’ve created and the people I’ve met throughout the years. One of my main goals as your president is to make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience when coming to a meeting or an event and can really feel at home in the club. I really hope I get the chance to get to know you all and if you ever have any questions, comments, concerns, or just need a friend to talk to, feel free to contact me anytime!! I’m super excited to see all your lovely faces at general meetings and other events hosted in Circle K and hope you all enjoy this amazing newsletter made by Anjo!~ Sincerely,
Vanessa Kumnoonsate

Hello UCR! My name is Max Rico and I am serving as your
2018-2019 Subregion B International Trustee. As trustee, I represent the California-Nevada-Hawai’i, Southwest, and Rocky Mountain districts on the Circle K International board. If you ever have any questions regarding anything on the international level, don’t hesitate to reach out!
Since my election in July, I have worked with the interna-
tional board to develop strategies for fundraising and membership growth at the international level. I have also worked with our three Subregion B district governors to ensure that everything is going well in their districts.
Personally, I have been advocating for the WASH Project.
WASH is a 5-year partnership between CKI and UNICEF which aims to raise $240,000 for water, sanitation, and hygiene projects in Haiti by 2022. I’m happy to report that our club is participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF hours year, so you will have an opportunity to directly make an impact on Halloween next year. I am also walking 6 km every day this month and seeking sponsors to sponsor me on each month, so let me know if you’re willing, and we can help WASH together!

SERVICE Mr. Joe’s FARM June 6th
At Mr. Joe’s Farm, many members clear out cages, restore old farming equipment. Although the event may sound gross and digusting, many members come to see and take care of the many wonderful animals found at Mr. Joe’s farm. Even when the service gets messy, Circle K at UCR always finds a way!

5TH YEAR COMPUTER SCIENCE WITH BUSINESS APPLICATION
Mr. Joe’s Farm cares for animals from miniature bulls,
camels, alpacas, pigs, and even turtles. Anyone can check it out and they specialize in accommodating special needs visitors. This time around we split into two groups. One group helped Mr. Joe’s partner Stacy build a dog kennel. The other group cut weeds down and scattered it around the farm for animals to eat. At the very end Mr. Joe let all the animals out and let us pet them!

MDA CAMP
June 25th to June 30th By JAMESON NGUYEN

Volunteering at MDA was a really wholesome
week of fun! Being a counselor for a camper was
great and being able to take care of a child was a really
different experience after being taken care of by my parents for 19 years. The one on one relationship that I was able to build with my camper was really sweet and I really enjoyed laughing and hanging out with him.
One of the best moments for me was when my camper and I were
playing card games with other campers and counselors. My camper is usually a really shy kid, but I was able to encourage him to go talk to other campers and he really broke out of his shell while finding his new favorite card game.
What makes MDA camp so special is the uniqueness every camper
brings. None of the campers there, although all having muscular dystrophy, are the same. They aren’t defined by the medical illness that they have and really show how strong the individual self can be, even if they’re just kids. Each and everyone one of those campers have their own story and its really a blessing to be a part of it no matter how small. The camp itself is ran by a loving group of volunteers that really do their best to make this camp feel like home. I would really recommend volunteering at MDA camp whenever you all get the chance!

MDA CAMP June 25th to June 30th
BY Nina Schatz
3rd Year ENVIRONMENTAL Science Major
Over the summer, I got to volunteer for a WHOLE WEEK in San Diego at the Muscular
Dystrophy Association Camp (MDA Camp for short). Muscular dystrophy is a condition that deteriorates the muscles in the body and may lead to some level of paralysis. This camp was erected in order to help kids with MD enjoy summer camp. Although I wasn’t assigned a camper, I helped as a substitute to other counselors/staff members who had trouble moving or watching their kid.
As scary as it sounds, we had our electronics confiscated for the entire week. I know that
it sounds ridiculous and scary. Heck, even I subconsciously went to my pocket in hopes of finding my phone. After the initial shock of not having my phone with me, I found the time I spent in the wilderness and with the patrons at camp, that it was a refreshing change.
Throughout the week, we went through a schedule with the kids. The schedule included
games, swimming, naps, meals, and a different surprise event each day. Surprise events were super fun for both the counselors and the kids. We got to do all sorts of snazzy things like archery, laser tag, and even motorbiking. Spending time with the campers was some of the most fulfilling moments I’ve had in a long time. We spent hours with the kids in the game room, teaching them all kinds of card games like Big 2, Blackjack. There was even a casino night, in which they put their skills to the test.
All in all, MDA Camp’s most fulfilling activity was just helping the kids with typical day
to day task. Because of their disease, it can be difficult for them to do the daily task of getting dressed, getting in and out of their chairs, and going to the bathroom. Overall it was an amazing experience, and I can’t wait to apply to MDA Camp next year. Who knows, maybe next year, I’ll get a camper!

Muscular Dystrophy is a disease that causes weakness, fatigue and, immobility. As a result, many children
who are afflicted with this disease are unable to be a “kid”. Instead of playing outside, many of these children are forced to stay bedridden while their worrisome parents and watchful doctors monitor their health.
Every summer, Circle K at University California, Riverside participates in the Muscular Dystrophy Association
Camp (MDA Camp for short) where members help watch over, guide, and play with children afflicted with muscular dystrophy. In our best efforts, our members are able to give these children at opputunity to have an oppurtunity to be a “kid”. Although the event is very tiresome, the MDA camp service project highlights one of the best services one can provide to the community and through Circle K here at UCR.

INSAN for HUMANITY July 7th NATHAN WONG
4th Year Business administration: Accounting Major
During the summer, Circle K at University of California, Riverside had an opportunity to help prepare food for the homeless. Throughout the event, members cut, cooked, and readied food items to feed hundreds of homeless people. While the service project was extremely demanding, the service project was infintely rewarding.
16
On July 7th, UCR volunteered at the INSAN for Humanity Foundation in
Pomona, CA. This Soup Kitchen centered around catering towards those who are homeless in the 909 area and treating them as guests. The coordinator constantly reminds us that we are all like waiters and waitresses serving meals because we do not know if one day we may ourselves be homeless. This wholesome service lets us participate in washing, cutting, and prepping food as well as outreaching into the community by advertising the meal to nearby residents. Before the meal is served, attendees are able to sift through donated clothes and items and take back as much as they want. The meal started with a "lavish beverly hills styled salad" as dubbed by the owner with lettuce, spinach, carrots, apples, lemons, and more as well as a drink of choice. Then, the main entree of chicken breast and green beans were served. Lastly, everyone was able get a scoop or two of ice cream to cool off in the summer sun. This service is truly one that connects us with our community and helps us serve those who are not as privileged as we are at this time. I always leave with a fuller heart and greater appreciation for humanity afterwards.

FELLOWSHIP Huntington Beach CleanUP & SOCIAL July 7th
While Circle K dedicates greatly on service, fellowship is another important aspect that we dedicat here at University of California, Riverside Circle K. Although most of our members are out and about, in different parts of California, the country, and even the world during the summer, we’re always able to come together as one happy family!

EMILY CANDIDO
3rd Year BUISNESS MAJOR
On August 4, 2018, Circle K members came together for
our first summer social at Huntington Beach! Not only was the social a great time, there was a special beach cleanup service beforehand. We started off our day by undergoing a briefing from a representative of The Surfrider Foundation, who told us volunteers what to look for. Several groups of members scattered across the area to pick up trash and other items that littered the area. After our service, we were all hungry and made a trip to the beach’s local mall to enjoy some sandwiches at Bruxie. The food was great, but catching up with everyone was even better. Everyone who attended enjoyed the waves and socializing. We concluded our night by making some hot dogs and smores. We even had a watermelon eating contest!! I won by the way LOL. This event was very refreshing since it was my first time seeing my friends from the club since school ended. I hope there are more beach clean ups in the future!

CKIx - Chicago: July 4th to July 8th MAX RICO 4th Year ENVIROMENTAL SCIENCE MAJOR
From July 4th to July 8th of this year, I had the privilege of being able to attend my
first Circle K International Convention (CKIx). This year’s host city was Chicago, and it was amazing!! And I can tell you that their deep dish pizza lives up to its hype!
I arrived on Wednesday and took the L Train to our convention venue in the Mag-
nificent Mile district of downtown Chicago. I arrived during the opening session of CKIx and quickly found the 26 other Cal-Nev-Ha CKI members in the crowd of nearly 400 Circle K’ers and probably over 1000 Key Clubbers. Afterwards, we split into randomized teams that we would partner with for the week. My team, the Kubs, had members from everywhere from New Hampshire to Aruba. On Thursday, we prepared to elect the new international board. Candidates gave their speeches and were officially elected at the House of Delegates. Our Subregion actually had no candidates at first, but I and a member, Mariah McMurren from the Southwest, ended up running off the floor. Caucusing relatively unprepared was a bit of a challenge, and later the House of Delegates experienced some confusion during our election process due to a well-qualified potential third candidate almost running off the floor as well. But I ended up being elected and entered a new role representing thousands of CKI’s best members. On Friday, we had the CKI Day of Service. Groups dispersed around Chicago for a variety of projects. We Kubs helped paint and create a new mural in Chicago’s Southside! Afterwards, we had the second general session in which the new international board was officially ushered in and pinned. On Saturday, members were able to attend dozens of informational workshops for the first half of the day. I personally loved the ones presented by my international Membership & Marketing committee. Afterwards, Subregion B found its districts and members being awarded left and right during the awards session. And finally, CKIx concluded with an emotional closing session. CKIx was an amazing experience and I was lucky to attend with fellow CKI at UCR members Calvin, Mark, and Henry. CKIx 2019 is in WALT DISNEY WORLD IN FLORIDA from June 27-30 next year, so start saving now! And let any of us know if you have any questions about our CKIx experiences!

LETS MAKE A DEAL TV TAPING #2 July 2nd Audrey Hoang
3rd Year Chemistry Major
During the summer, I participated in the second TV Taping at “Lets
Make a Deal”! As a fairly inactive member, it was really scary to jump into a project with Circle K out of of the blue. However, I was very happy! I got to meet so many wonderful members and bonded with them aswell!
Personally, I felt this event was a great turning point for me. For the
longest time, I felt that I did not belong in Circle K. While I did get along with everyone at Circle K, it is difficult to make friends in such a large organization. However, after meeting my car group and bonding over our experiences in and out of Circle K, it makes me happy that I was able to make great friends that I’ll be happy to rely on in Circle K.
Nonetheless, the event was a blast! As a requirement, people had to
dress up in costumes and participate in various events. Although, it was tiring, I had great food, a great time, and great friends with me. I couldn’t be any happier

What are you excited for this fall/Winter? Albert Dang
2nd Year Computer Science Major
My name is Albert Dang and I am a second-year computer science major. I joined
Circle K last year during spring quarter and I found going out to service events to be both fun and fulfilling! I just recently applied to be a little so I am looking forward to seeing who my big is going to be. Not only that, Circle K families for this year’s carnival theme haven’t come out yet and I am excited to see what families we are going to have for this year. With major holidays coming up soon--notably Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas--I am curious to see what kinds of interesting events we get to do for them. All things considered, I imagine 2018-19 is shaping up to be an amazing year of service!

Alicia Kim
3rd Year Psychology Major
My name is Alicia Kim and I am a third year pyschology major! I am very excit-
ed for the new fall and winter term for Circle K at UCR! While I haven’t been the most active member, I very excited to participate in the wide variety of projects Circle K has to offer such as Kids Rock Benefit Concert, our Weekend of Awesomenes, and much, much more! Above all else, I am very enthusastic to meet our new batch of Circle K recruits this fall!
Ultimately, I hope to become more active in the club! I hope I can make a last-
ing mark in my university and the club that I love so much!
Erica Apostolos 4th Year Math Major
Summer came and went by so quick, but I’m happy to be back in school because
Fall is a busy and exciting time. I’m happy to have met so many new members, see all the new Big & Little and Family pairings at Fall Install, attend workshops at Fall Training Conference, and do service all day long at our Fall Service Insomnia. If Fall wasn’t exciting enough, we have Winter quarter that brings Kids Rock Concert. I can’t wait for all that is to come!

LEADERSHIP What is it like as a board member for Circle K at UCR?
Robin Dang
4th Year Biochemistry Major
One of the main leadership aspects of Circle K is the club board. For our club, we
have officers that are elected annually by paid members of the club (Executive Board), and we have appointed chairs that are selected by the elected officers, typically through an application process (Appointed Board). The Executive Board is responsible for running the overall administration of the club, such as hosting meetings, organizing service events, delegating tasks, recording membership hours, and managing financial assets. For this year, we have 13 appointed chairs who are responsible for certain aspects of the club, such as recognition, member development, fundraising, external relations, and so much more.
Serving on board is a great opportunity to develop your leadership skills. My
overall experience on board so far has been amazing and I strongly encourage everyone to pursue these leadership positions. Despite the responsibilities, it’s truly rewarding to see new members join the club for the first time and develop themselves over the year and later take on these leadership opportunities. Serving on board might be overwhelming from time to time, but with the right mentality, you’ll be able to overcome anything!
