Pizza Night Social October 8 , 2019

Ngo Hillaryhemistry major rC

On October 8, 2019, Circle K members, old and potential, gathered at Glen Mor pool for a fun-filled night of pizzas, games, and s’mores! Since it was the second event of Fall Welcome Week, this was a perfect chance for potential members to bond with those already in the club. During this time, we saw a community come together to share in good food and even better company. This event was the first social I ever partook in and it resonates with me because it showed me that Circle K was something that I wanted to be a part of. The fact that there is a club at UCR that shares the belief of fellowship, service, and leadership makes me happy that I decided to join, and I hope that others will continue to attend other CKI events and make the club even bigger than it already is.

Spooktacular Tabletop Service I was nervous going into this event considering I didn’t really have an idea where it was located, and I was going in alone. After getting lead into this little hallway in the back of the Student Life room a little after 2, I was immediately greeted by a bundle of people huddled around two tables with tons of construction paper and markers. Everyone was so welcoming right when I walked in, and I was seated next to another Circle K first-timer and two senior members, and we all just ended up having a very chill conversation. It was like all my nerves from before disappeared because of how easily I befriended these people and could talk to them-- Like I said, everyone was so nice! And the cards just kept coming; it felt like a really wholesome activity, because together we would try finding some of the cutest ideas to draw up that we felt these kids would appreciate the most. Although it didn’t seem the most “exciting” activity to do during the first-week lineup, it honestly was the event that proved Circle K was the club for me.

Every now and then, CKI makes sure to have socials at the local boba shop, Ding Tea. It may not seem like much but these socials serve the special purpose of creating a better knit community in the bundle of people that come together to make UCR’s Circle K. This social holds a place in my heart being somewhat significant because this was the second CKI event I attended in my first quarter ever. This event also holds a lot more significance in the fact that I got my nickname from Amy here: Raccoon. The event was very chill but taught me key things to learn about CKI. I learned that this club was made up of my kind of people, who needed things to do, whether because they’re positive forces or simply for whatever reason. I thought it’d be impossible to find that, but...here I am.

Ronald McDonald House-Day of Service The Ronald McDonald’s House Service was on the last day of Fall Welcome Week. It was a fun time to volunteer with new members and get to know them more. As we arrived at the Ronald McDonald’s House, the workers there gave us a tour around the house and explained to us their mission, which is to help housing families with kids with serious sicknesses so that their parents do not have to commute from their homes to the hospital every day. We then split into three teams: cleaning, organizing, and decorating. I chose to help with organizing as my team went to the storage rooms to help sorting the food and supplies into respective categories. It was fun doing service with new members and I hope they enjoyed the service as much as I did. At the end, the workers gave us free burger or ice cream gift cards from McDonald’s, and it was a great service experience after all.

Ongoing Service: Feeding America Every Friday

I am glad to have the opportunity to volunteer at Feeding America, thanks to our VPS Michael. Feeding America is the largest hunger-relief organization in the Inland Empire with over 100,000 visitors each month. It is an ongoing service which we stock, move, and prepare food for distribution in the warehouse. We sorted the food into different boxes according to their category and threw away expired or opened food to ensure all the food are safe to consume. The workers there also gave us a tour around the warehouse and explained to us how their organization works to help low-income families around the area. It was a meaning fun experience and I will definitely go again!

On October 31st, Circle K participated in Trick or Treat for Unicef. At around 6 pm, everyone who was planning to attend met up at the AI horseshoe. It was so exciting to see everyone dressed up in costume demonstrating there Halloween spirit in the name service. Once we arrived to our destination, we each received a little box to collect our donations. We all went in a single group and went house to house asking people for donations. We were asking for anything ranging from a penny to anything that they would like to give. We spent a good 2 to 3 hours asking for donations and enjoying each other’s company and feeling the halloween spirit all for the greater good.

Operation Community Cares November 2 , 2019

Operation Community Care was a service event that took place the Saturday of FTC 2019, in which we put together care packages to send to US veterans abroad. The care packages were divided into two assembly lines, food and toiletries/hygiene. Each assembly line would walk through with boxes, select certain amounts from each of the available items, and the boxes would then be packed to be shipped. The process was pretty simple and self-explanatory due to the impeccable arrangement and organization of the organizers. The event was a great way to relax, with how easy going everyone at the event was, and give back to our soldiers abroad!

Cutie Hack is a 12 hour hackathon cohosted by ACM and IEEE at UCR in which hackers spend the whole day developing a project from scratch. During the event, we were tasked the normal duties on setting up and tearing down the event, along with serving food and being runners. Some unique tasks were taking pictures for the event as well as supervising the hacking rooms to ensure everyone’s safety. Volunteering at Cutie Hack was great because there was a lot of service hours gained in one period so it helped me and several others with achieving their MRP goal! In the end of the event, we got to see all the amazing projects that were made, as well as obtain a lot of cool tech swag and yummy food!

On November 16th 2019, I participated in CKI’s monthly service project Adopt-A-Street. For those who are not aware, UCR’s CKI has adopted its own street and must be cleaned every month or so. This was my first time attending a CKI service project, but I was nevertheless eager to help. I arrived early in the morning and met up with other fellow CKI members and once everyone was there we headed over to our adopted street. I was quite nervous at first, but my group made me feel at ease and we all joked around as we picked up the trash from the streets. Not only did I get to help out our local community by picking up trash, but I also got to form a closer bond with my fellow CKI members. It was such a rewarding experience and I highly recommend everyone to come out to the next Adopt-AStreet event!

Lana’s PYOS: Dog Toy Making Service December 2 , 2019

One of our members had a lot of extra shirts laying around so we decided to do a dog toy making service! We cut up the shirts into strips and braided them with different colors to create a long chew toy. It was raining pretty hard that day but a good amount of members came out to enjoy some brownies and service and an actual dog came in to play with us :)

Fall Service Insomnia November 23, 2019

Every quarter CKI hosts a Service Insomnia, an event where members try to stay awake for 24 hours while doing service! We started off the day by helping out at A Brush with Kindness, a program ran by the Habitat for Humanity of Riverside. At this event we helped painted a home for a family, and it was a lot of fun! While waiting for the paint to dry I was able to talk to a lot Vivia of our members and get to know them more, so I really enjoyed nN 1st y guy e a en this event. majo r Compu r t er Sc ience After this event our club attended the November Day of Awesomeness Day, an event that revolved around our three tenants of service, leadership, and fellowship. We got to do activities that also taught us more about our Kiwanis Family, such as a scavenger hunt! This event was super informative and engaging, and I highly encourage those to attend the next DAD! We then had our November DCM, a meeting where we share news and updates within Desert Oasis. Our lieutenant governor, Andy Nguyen, also recognized two members from our club! Ahtziri received member of the month and Jack received board member of the month! Andy also talked about the upcoming events that DO was having, such as December WAW. Overall it was a really fun and interesting DCM! The next event was probably my favorite one, and it was the Cha2O fundraiser! I really enjoyed getting boba with everyone in CKI, and it also cool knowing that the money is going to the Pediatric Trauma Program! This fundraiser was super intimate and I was able to bond with so many people in our club. Finally we had our late night service where we helped create decorations and posters for our upcoming fundraiser, K-Rock! This service was really fun because a lot of members showed their artistic side, and it was cool seeing how creative the posters were. I also enjoyed seeing members slowly get tired and leave, it was like being on a survival show! By the end of the event there were only 6 of us, and despite being extremely worn out, we all had an amazing time. Service Insomnia was so much fun and I hope to attend our next one!

The Insomnia service event is held every quarter in an effort dedicated in doing service but also increasing the bonding time between the members of CKI. The service event was composed of multiple service events throughout the day. It was nice to see members waking up early for a good cause such as painting a house for families in need. Throughout the service we did many bonding activities where we worked as a team and it was quite fun to see the members having fun! When we were helping paint the house it made me realize that a simple thing like helping could make a difference. The Insomnia service event was amazing and I would gladly do it again in a heartbeat.

Service insomnia was the first event that I struggled so hard to stay up for, since it was a 24 hour event. It was a day filled with many different events combined together. There was a brush with kindness, November DAD, division council member, Cha2o fundraiser, as well as the night service. Even though I had to wake up really early to attend the first event, it was a really fun experience. I was able to bond with other people from our club. We also did a few activities as a group during November DAD. For the night service event, we drew and painted posters for K-rock. However, the best thing that happened to me during service insomnia was being able to eat. Nothing is better than enjoying food on an empty stomach!

Big and Little social was a memorable and exciting time for me. Hannah did a great job on hosting the event and giving everyone a chance to meet their bigs and littles. I got to know Josh and other Circle K members more when I went to the Big and Little socials through the fun activities. After spending more time with Josh and getting to know him more, I realized that we are really similar, and have the same humor and interests. We bonded a lot in just a few socials and became super close. It’s amazing to see so many friendships come out from Circle K’s Big and Little social.

Fall Quarter of CKI was a great quarter to start off the school year. It was nice catching up with all my friends after the summer up in the Bay and it was awesome meeting all the new members of the club. It was a very memorable quarter full of adventures with the freshmen, seaside trips, and fun club events. However, my favorite experience of Fall Quarter was the big and little process. I always looked forward to picking up in CKI however I never got the chance. This quarter I was finally able to be active in the big and little process and attend all the big and little socials. One thing that was pleasantly surprising was how many potential littles there were. I got to meet almost every potential little during the big and little socials and it was super fun getting to know each of them through the activities we did together. Since there were so many littles, we usually had to rely on rapid speed dating type of games. These were my favorite since the chaotic energy that surrounded these fast paced games just made the whole experience of getting to know somebody super upbeat. It was common to see tons of smiles and laughs shared around during these games and especially during the socials. The big and little socials was not only a great experience to get to know the littles, but also was a great way to get to know the new members of the club. When it was finally time for big and little reveals, I was so happy getting my littles and I look forward to creating memories with them in the future. Cheers to you Gabe and Peter :)

Hello! On November 15, 2019 I had the opportunity to attend Fall Install for Circle K International at UC Riverside. This event is the official induction of all the members at UCR CKI and is a time where our families, bigs, and littles are revealed. It was held at it John’s Incredible Pizza in Moreno Valley, which is actually a place that Fall Install is traditionally held at for UCR CKI. Our membership and development chair, Hannah Abellana, is the leader of the event and she starts the event off with introductions and pledges. After giving us the rundown she lets us off in groups to get some delicious food. There was SO much food! It was a buffet style restaurant that featured pizza. There was asian styled pizza, regular classic pizza, or even meat lovers pizza. Afterwards we went through member inductions, big/little reveals, family reveals, and family competitions. My family sadly didn’t win but it was a nice bonding event with my future friends. After cleanup the new bigs and littles got to spend time together and play games, and I was gifted with 3 grand littles! CKI at UCR has four familes this year with breakfast themes: Sunny Siders, Royal Potatoes, Woke Waffles, and Bacon Baddies (from top to bottom).

Fall Install was very successful this year. It was a special event especially for new members as they finally get installed as a member of Circle K International at UC Riverside. They also get to join the families and the mentorship program, which will help them to learn more about the club. This was my first Fall Install, and I had so much fun on that day. It was held at John’s Incredible Pizza so there was a lot of food. The big and little reveal was very exciting as we saw how surprised the littles were when they found out who their bigs were. The family competition was really fun too. With my co-family head Jameson, we led our family, Woke Waffles, in cheers and competed with other families in terms of team spirit. Although we did not win in the end, I had a great time with my family and I can’t wait to get closer to my family. At the end of the fall install, the bigs got to spend time with their new little at the arcade. Although I didn’t pick up a little this time, I still had so much fun playing games with my friends. I enjoyed the night so much and I can’t wait for next year’s fall install and seeing more new members CKI at UCR has a mentorship program, bigs and littles, that helps pair newer members with veteran members to acclimate into the organization as well as UC Riverside!

But before everyone got to go on rides, play games, and make memories with friends, we all stuffed our bellies with food from the all you can eat buffet! After we were all nice and fed, the installation of members, big and little reveals, family reveals, and the family cheer competition took place! This year’s families are the: Bacon Baddies led by Carolyn Tran and Joshua Bautista, Sunny Siders led by Lluvia Devora and Jamie Ly (who had taken First place during the family cheer competition!), Royal Potatoes led by Kimse Sok and Jack Chen, and Woke Waffles led by Janice Lee and Jameson Nguyen! Service Initiative Chair New to UCR and not sure what you’re doing? Or maybe you’ve been here for a while but you still don’t know what you’re doing? Either way, that’s okay! At the R’Sources workshop, I introduced a variety of academic, financial, social, and mental health resources to help students succeed. While the journey through college may be a long one, it certainly doesn’t have to be a difficult one. The more aware you are of these resources, the less stress you’ll have. This workshop was meant as a quick survival guide to help students get through college. There are so many free and diverse resources available to you, including Circle K! So don’t be afraid to take advantage of the social network you have here—you never know what you might find!

Fall Training Conference was event that truly showed me what I wasn’t able to experience in Key Club. The people, spirit, and atmosphere there were amazing and I became a lot closer to people I had rarely spoken to before (hi Albert’s car people <3). FTC had a plentiful amount of activities and workshops to attend, although my personal favorites were watching the skits along with the other night activities (despite how cold it was). At first, I was skeptical of how “amazing” this event would be even though I had heard so many great things about it. After all, how much fun can you really have being at campsite surrounded by people you barely even know? The answer to that question is; a lot. $180 dollars is nothing short of an intimidating price tag, but I would urge people that haven’t gone to FTC to definitely go next time!

At Fall Training Conference, members got to go to different workshops from dancing to meeting new friends from all over the district.

28

Our members, Max and Jamie, hosted a workshop on how to recruite new members in CKI. Good Job!

Returning Attendee Attending Fall Training Conference as a returning member was a completely different experience from my first time. FTC was one of the biggest highlights of my first year in Circle K so I was excited to go back. I was able to participate in a whole new set of activities that I wasn’t able to (some I wasn’t even aware of ) the previous year: I hosted a workshop, worked as an SAA, and walked in the t-shirt fashion show. Through my workshop and working as an SAA, I was able to foster my leadership skills and see first-hand all the work that was put into making sure FTC would be a fun, safe, and successful event. With the fashion show, I met tons of members from all the different schools in the Cali-Nev-Ha District and made so many new friends. On top of that, I had the chance to reconnect with friends I made the previous year at various service events and games. This year at FTC, i experienced the same feeling of excitement that I did when it was my first time attending and once again, I am in awe of all the opportunities that Circle K provides for its members, especially at the event.

On Saturday, November 16th, CKI UCSD held Masquerade Ball, their annual event to raise money for this year’s DFI, the Trevor Project. There were pictures, auctions, a silent disco, an escape room, a three-course meal, and ballroom dance lessons! The food was decent, and we didn’t have enough time to do the escape room, but the silent disco and the dance lessons were fun. The instructor was a student from UCSD and he taught us a couple of moves which were pretty hard to learn at first imo. In the end, Mball was a fun excuse to dress up and get to know people from other schools while raising money for the Trevor Project.

This past December some of our fellow CKI members attended this years December WAW, hosted by our wonderful LTG Andy Nguyen. This was the very first December WAW I attended and I am so glad that I was able to attend because I feel like I was able to bond so much more with my fellow CKI members and eat lots of yummy food. All that cheering stated to make my throat hurt but it was definitely worth it.

On the second day of the Desert Oasis Academy, I was put into my December WAW team with my two amazing team leaders Amy and Ethan. We did a lot of team activities that show us the importance of teamwork and trust within the team. We also learned that everyone has their own perspective and ideas on how certain things are and how we should understand others’ perspectives to work together as a team. Later at night we got to hangout with our teams and participate in a scavenger hunt all over the Vegas Strip. It was really fun because we were able to take group pictures. On the last day of WAW, we got visited by one of the Las Vegas Kiwanis Club members and she taught us how to be strong leaders and grow our leadership skills. After that we had our December Division Council Meeting that was lead by Andy Nguyen. Lastly, we had our very last day of the Desert Oasis Academy, which was personally my favorite because we did activities revolving around our worries and our hopes and dreams. We learned that everyone has worries and it’s important to know that we are not alone with that worry. We also were able to write down our hopes and that everyone has their own dreams. The last activity we did was as a whole group and we appreciated the people that bring us happiness and joy. It was one of my favorite activities because it makes people feel loved when others showed appreciation for them. Overall, December WAW was one of my favorite CKI events and I am so happy and grateful that I attended and learned a lot from this experience and had a great time with everyone. I hope that I am able to attend many more WAWs in the future.
