Editor’s Message Hello readers! This is Janice Lee, the newsletter chair of Circle K at UCR for the 2019-2020 term. And YES, I made the newsletter you are about to read. However, I did not do this alone. I would like to have a big shout out to all the article writers and photographers to make this newsletter possible. Thank you! This is the first newsletter of my term. I am actually pretty nervous but excited at the same time. It is my honor to have the opportunity to publish what we have done at CKI at UCR in spring. With all the fun and laughter at our events, CKI at UCR is like an everyday breakfast that keeps me energetic for the day, and I hope it means the same to you as well.

Enjoy reading the newsletter presented by CKI at UCR, and how members shared their experiences at our events. Hope to see you at our next service, fellowship, and leadership events!

SPECIAL MESSAGES District Governor Hello UC Riverside Circle K! My name is Wayne Cheng, and I’m a third-year at San Francisco State University studying film! This year, I have the honor of serving as your California-Nevada-Hawaii District Governor for the 2019-2020 term, and I look forward to working with a lot of you in the near future. As the District Governor, I oversee the District Board of 21 officers (3 Executives, 9 Lt. Governors, 9 Appointed Chairs), and serve as the main liaison between other branches of the Kiwanis Family, as well as the International level of Circle K. This year, our District’s goals are built around improving our overall service efforts, Kiwanis Family relations, membership, and internal communication!

UCR CKI is a club that’s near and dear to my heart, so you can expect to see me around at your events over the summer (and DEFINITELY at K-Rock 2020!!). I’m always so happy to see how much your club accomplishes and the relationships that you’re always able to foster among your members. Since your Spring quarter is winding down now, I hope everyone continues to stay involved in this organization, or at least your local communities over the summer. Thank you all so much for your hard work and for having me at so many of your events this year!
Desert Oasis Lieutenent Governor Hello UCR! My name is Andy Nguyen, for those of you who are not acquainted with me quite yet, and I currently serve as the Desert Oasis Lieutenant Governor. My primary job is to give back to all of you, as members, and to develop other chapters within our division. Aside from that, this past spring, I was a second year Psychology major! I hope that as we exit the spring, you’ve all survived and managed to allow your buds to begin blooming. Spring can be a relatively hard quarter to get through as we try to manage burn out from not only school, but also our own personal lives.
Andy Nguyen
Remember to take care of yourselves! Self-care goes beyond just putting on a face mask and doing your skin care. It also means allowing yourself to be vulnerable and selfish every now and again. It’s 2019; romanticizing unhealthy behaviors, including avoiding sleep or purposefully not eating, is not it. Let’s all do our part in creating a healthier environment—not only for ourselves, but for those around us. For some personal updates, I managed to pass my classes (lol) after an honestly pretty rough quarter. The universe thought it’d be funny to throw a whole bunch of obstacles in my path, but hey! I’m alive. :-)) Additionally, I’ve been trying my best to work diligently to give back to all of you! The members who gave me this wonderful opportunity to serve as your Lieutenant Governor. My Division Leadership Team (DLT) and I have a lot planned for you this summer, so I hope that you’ll look forward to that! I hope that you all enjoy your summer and make the best use of it! Get lots of rest and I’ll see all of you again when we return in the Fall!
CKI At UCR President Hello all! My name is Kaylie Truong and I am very excited to be your president for the 2019-2020 term. Through this position, I would like to achieve several different goals that would benefit the club. I want to make our club a fun and welcoming environment for everyone as I had experienced when I first joined. This club has so many opportunities for every member to grow and make everlasting memories with great friends, and I want to make it so that everyone can utilize those opportunities. By forming a cohesive board and encouraging general members to take leadership opportunities, I hope that our club can retain its strong spirit.
Kaylie Truong
I am very excited to see what all of you bring to the club! I believe that each and every member has something special about them, so I will try getting to know everyone (and you should try too!!). When new members join next year, let’s make sure that our club is something to be proud of and something that they will enjoy. I hope you’re all ready for this term, because it’s going to be amazing.

Spring Info Night was the first Spring Welcome Week event that allowed people who were interested in joining Circle K to understand and learn more about us. It was a great moment for them to listen to the CKI 101 presentation and also to get closer with our members.
Coloring Page Tabletop Coloring Page Tabletop was the first service event of the spring quarter. It was held by our service initiative chair, Veronica Thai, where volunteers participated in making coloring books for the children. It was a meaningful service overall.

A fundraising event at a restaurant can also be a social event, in which new members had a chance to get closer with other members in a relaxing environment with delicious food. The money we raised from this fundraiser was donated to our new DFI The Trevor Project. Hanging out with club members after class is the best thing to do instead of doing nothing at home.

Round 1 Social
04/11/2019
One of the first events I went to during spring quarter for Circle K was the Round One Social. I attended a few of the meetings for circle K during winter quarter, but this was the first social I attended. When arriving at Round One, people initially split into two groups. One for karaoke and the other for bowling. My roommate and I started to talk to more members of the club and we noticed how inviting and welcoming everyone was. As someone who is more introverted, this gave me the opportunity to talk to more people and understand the sense of community Circle K has. Overall it was a positive experience and I encourage people to come out to events more.
-Aileen Nguyen
HUB Care Package Service On April 12th, from 10:00 am to 1 pm, I went to the HUB Care Package service event for Spring 2019 Welcome Week! During this event, we were placed into pairs and helped people put together care packages with things such as toothpaste, snacks, shampoo, etc. People could make these care packages for either themselves or to donate. Everyone who put together a care package also received a cool wristband. The entire event was very relaxing and a great way to spend a Friday morning/afternoon de-stressing from the week. It was really great to see all the people that came out to both volunteer and make care packages, especially our very own Maddie Villanueva who chaired the event and my big, Brennan Cain, who kept me company throughout the whole event. So, if you ever want to spend some time relaxing from classes and/or bond with other Circle K members, then be sure to come out to the next HUB Care Package event! Service and free friends? What more can you ask for?

Highlander Day of Service CKI members beautify the school by picking up trash around the campus, spreading mulch around the trees, cleaning the libraries and lectures, and much more. At the service, we got split into separate groups that tackled different maintenance tasks. My group was in charge of cleaning the trash cans in our school’s libraries, Rivera and Orbach. We were given materials such as gloves, disinfecting sprays, towels, and safety goggles. We went to all the floors of the library and wiped down the exterior of the trash cans. Although a simple task, it really made me appreciate all the hard and detailed work our school’s maintenance workers go through daily. I also learned the importance of keeping the campus clean, not just for health reasons, but because a campus represents its students and staff and we should always make ourselves and the campus presentable. Anytime our club has the opportunity to participate in this service, I always attend because it greatly impacts the campus and our community. Plus, it’s always fun to interact with everyone during this service. Personally, it creates one of the best and funniest memories during my time in Circle K.
Tamale Festival

-Madeline Villanueva
For the last event of Spring Welcome Week, Circle K@UCR volunteered at the Tamale Festival, an annual festival in Riverside that raises money for the Riverside School District, as well as promote Hispanic culture. Members worked together to help the festival attendees play games, purchase shirts, and just have an overall good time. Not only that, but members continuously worked with volunteer coordinators to make sure the event was running smooth the whole time, by helping them out with anything they made need. Tamale Festival is a wonderful event that members always seem to enjoy, and it will definitely be an event the club will have marked down for next spring!

R’Pantry: Ongoing Did you know that UCR has our very own food pantry? Created to fight food insecurity on campus, R’Pantry is available to all students so that no one goes to school hungry. Every week, Circle K comes out to help with anything that the pantry needs. We help stock the shelves for distribution, move food from the shipping vans, and clean the room! For me, R’Pantry is my weekly destressor. It takes place right in the middle of the week and I can forget about my classes and just focus on service! R’Pantry also allows me to see the impacts of service immediately. The happy faces of the students as they take home the food that I stocked makes me feel very fulfilled! Adopt-a-Street is one of Circle K’s service projects that promote a cleaner environment and community in Riverside. This event was one of my first service events at Circle K. Early in the morning, I, along with others, were brought to the street and split into groups with each group taking one side of the street. At first I was nervous as I didn’t know many people, but as the service progressed, I felt more comfortable and was getting to know many of the members. Something that was difficult was thatissometimes trash was but it was on Adopt-a-Street one of Circle K’sencountered, service projects private property and the club was unsure what to do. The club came to that promote a cleaner environment and comthe conclusion together to pick up as much as possible without going munity in Riverside. This isevent oneevent of my first too far. Overall, Adopt-a-Street a nicewas service to go to if you service events at Circle K. Early in the morning, I, want to get to know the members and help clean up Riverside!

Cinco De Mayo Fiesta
05/04/2019
The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta was hosted by George Washington Elementary School in Riverside to commemorate the Mexican military victory in 1862 and to celebrate the Mexican-American culture. The young students with their families and friends - all from diverse ethnic backgrounds - came to enjoy great food, games, and entertainment. Along with another UC Riverside fraternity, the CKI members helped at the prize booth and game corners. We sorted and distributed goodies for the kids who collected tickets and exchanged them for certain prizes from playing games. It got really busy and loud at the prize booth because a lot of the kids were able to get so many tickets, so a lot of quick mental math was involved! It was really nice to see the kids and the families having a good time, so I also had a good time!
Key 2 College Key to College is an annual event for Key Clubbers to learn about the various concepts surrounding college through multiple workshops hosted by our wonderful speakers who also happens to be members from our very own Circle K. As the Kiwanis Family Relations chair, I was responsible for running the event. I had two really hardworking subcommittee chairs to help me along with many Circle K members as well. It was a very eventful and exciting way to get to know the Key Clubbers and teach them things that they didn’t know before. I wish I knew about Key to College when I was in high school as it would have helped me out quite a bit. All in all, I’m excited for the next Key to College to come!

Citrus Hack I had the opportunity to volunteer at Citrus Hack and decided to come out in my spare time on Saturday. I was a photographer for the event and a stand by helper. There were many programmers from our school showcasing their code art that they spent nights perfecting and it was their time to shine. As a photographer, I wanted to capture their special moment and it made me happy seeing them displaying their projects to guests with passion. One my favorite moment was when I stumbled upon a group trio and they were cracking jokes as they were showing their computer game they created. I understand that coding and programming is not easy so it is inspiring to see so many students of UCR present. I also thought the amount of helpers needed to feed and provide such event for so many people to make it a memorable day for the programmers was surprising.

Senior Barbecue
05/22/2019
On Wednesday May 22 I volunteered at ASUCR’s annual senior BBQ. At this BBQ, volunteers signed up for different time shifts and depending on the time that they worked, they did various things. I volunteered in the middle of the afternoon and I helped with stamping tickets and letting the seniors into the BBQ. It was overall a very relaxing event. At one point though, it actually started raining so it was a little bit of a hassle letting the seniors in, but other than that, the event ran very smoothly. Volunteers even got to get free food so that was great as well!

Service Insomnia: Open 24 Hours
Adopt-A-Street Kicking off service insomnia was Adopt-a-Street! A service where we clean up a street that we own in riverside! It was early in the morning at 7:00 am so the turnout was a little sparse. Thankfully we had a small group of six people that showed up, Andy, Kaylie, Jamie, Gabriel, Max and Daniel! Thanks to our even split (3 on each side of the street), we were able to clean the street efficiently and quickly! As we picked up various pieces trash, we were able to talk and get to know each other a little better which made the event chill. Everyone should attend next time!
-Daniel Nguyen
Mr. Joe’s Farm
I attended the service event for Mr. Joe’s Farm and there we all came together to pick out weeds from the ground and move various logs across the property. Throughout the event, new members were able to get to know older members and we were able to get a little closer to them as it was technically our very first event. Near the end, the owners of the farm allowed us to walk around a take a look at all the animals on the farm. There were llamas, camels, alpacas, and many other animals! I think that this event really enabled all the members of Circle K to bond and get closer because of how up close and personal the service event was.

Chili Cook off & Car Show During service insomnia, one of the service events that the club went to was the chili cook off and car show. This was a fun service event as we did a lot to better our community. For example, we picked trash off from the group and made the streets look better. In addition, we managed the kids section of the show and was able to connect with the youth of the community. All in all, this was one of the many highlights of service insomnia and one should definitely go again next year.
-Juliana Chen
Carl’s Jr Fundraiser On May 25, 2019, Circle K held its quarterly Service Insomnia event. Service Insomnia is a twenty-four-hour event filled various community and service projects. After completing two of the service projects, the members met up again for our third event, the Carl’s Junior fundraiser. After a long day of service, the members went to Carl’s junior to eat and socialize before our final event, the late night service. Overall, Carl’s Junior fundraiser was a great chance to give back to the community and to bond with fellow Circle K members. Everything was all for the greater good.
-Gabriel Vazquez
Late Night Service At Spring Service Insomnia’s late night tabletop service, members had a variety of activities to choose from. That night we made no-sew pillows, PTP dolls, graduation leis, and cookies for the homeless. Members were free to move about and do whatever they’d like. I personally made graduation leis for our fundraising all night. All in all it was a genuinely fun event with loads of laughs and service. Everyone was enjoying the late night service.

Family Brawl was held after the general meeting. A lot of people stayed behind, and some participated in the Mario Kart tournament, while some people like me chose to watch the games and support our own family. Although I did not play a part in the game, it was still fun to watch as the Mario Kart races were very intense and the scores were tight. There was so much laughter and cheer. I would also love to congratulate people who won the tournament in the end, and thank you all players who played for their family. Even though my family did not win at the end, I saw the effort they put into the tournament. It was a great social event where we got to have some relaxing time to play video games and bond with one another. I would definitely go to the next family brawl, or maybe even become a player for my family.
- Janice Lee
After’s Ice Cream Social After’s ice cream social was a really fun event that Circle K at UCR hosted. Although it was not a fundraiser, the social was still a fun event with delicious dessert. I got to hang out and catch up with club members after the general meeting. After ice cream has a fantastic selection of ice cream choice. I personally loved the milk and cereal ice cream paired with the donut. It is called the milk bun and it tasted amazing. Unfortunately, I broke my diet at afters ice cream social.

Leadership
24
Spring Training Conference I went to STC South 2019 in early May to learn about how to be an effective leader who gives back to his or her club. It was exciting to meet the other divisions in Southern CNH and learn all about their experiences! I went to a public speaking workshop that taught me how to properly communicate with others. I also went to a club building and revitalization workshop where I got insight into how different clubs all over the district are run. I specifically was interested in the discussion about solutions to current issues in our district. Finally, our very first division council meeting was held during STC where we had bonding activities with our sister schools, UNLV and CSN. Overall, it was a rewarding experience that I look forward to.

Time For Change Workshop
Veronica Thai
Fourth Year Psychology and Education
Just because you’re busy doesn’t mean you’re productive. It actually means the opposite! Thus, it’s important to know yourself and your habits, so you can learn to use your time wisely and efficiently. In the Time for Change workshop, I led a discussion on time management and organizational skills to maximize productivity and minimize stress. Despite a lecture-like presentation, many attendees noted the workshop as “useful” and “eye-opening.” We reviewed S.M.A.R.T. goals, the pomodoro technique, and more to improve study patterns and efficiency. I also introduced apps like Toggl, Google Calendar, Tomato Clock, and Flora that attendees noted as “helpful” and “cool.” These strategies and resources help ensure that we make the most of our time. Many students struggle to balance school, work, social, and personal aspects of life. This is why time management is crucial, so we can go out to fun community service events, study for and ace all our classes, AND still have enough time to put on face masks and relax every night.

Third Year Media and Cultural Studies
26
My name is Brennan Cain, an incoming third-year Media and Cultural Studies major at UCR. Serving as a family head with my co-heads Kristy Dai and Jackie Do was an incredible honor to have throughout the 2018-2019 term. We worked with the rest of our Greatest Showmints Family to plan socials, interact with each other, and just have some good times. In the end, we were given the distinct honor of Family of the Year! It is such an amazing opportunity to have a fantastic group of people you’re able to share and create precious memories and interactions with, all leading up to becoming Family of the Year! I am so grateful for my experience as a family head, and I cannot wait to see how far the family heads of the 2019-2020 term are able to go!
Leadership Of The Year Leadership of the Year award. When Erica Apostolos announced my name for the award, I was actually very surprised that I received it because I wasn’t expecting it at all. I felt very honored and thankful to receive this. During the 2018-2019 term, I was very involved with Circle K. I was the Kids Rock Concert games chair and I was also the Communications and Outreach chair for Desert Oasis. I wanted to be more involved with the club, and although I didn’t have a huge leadership role like being on the executive board or appointed board, I was still a part of planning UCR at CKI’s biggest event and I was also part of the divisional leadership team as well. Being in Circle K made me realize that they offer many leadership positions and the organization itself allows us to go further into our leadership skills. Skills such as public speaking and organization will definitely be used in future jobs and practicing those skills early on are very helpful. Having leadership roles in the club shaped me to be the person I am today and has helped strengthen many of my professional qualities. Because of the leadership roles I held last term, it allowed me to go above and beyond and become appointed as the secretary for the 2019-2020 term. For people who are debating on whether they want to acquire a leadership role, whether it’s Circle K related or not, I advise you to go for it because it will definitely help you out in the future. Even though it may be stressful, in the end, it will all be worth it and you will be so proud for all that you have accomplished!

DISTRICT CONV
District Convention (DCON) is the largest and last district event of every term. All the schools across California, Nevada, and Hawaii come together to celebrate the end of the term with workshops, awards, and activities. This year was my first DCON and I went to several different workshops from a K-pop dance workshop to Presidents 101 where I met presidents from several schools. There was a also a professional expo where I met alumni from different fields who gave me tips for my career path. On the 2nd day our club won awards such as Distinguished Newsletter! Many district officers were also elected such as our Desert Oasis Lieutenant Governor Andy Nguyen. At night our very own One and Nine (which I was also part of ) performed and won the Fan Favorite Award. Overall DCON gave me a more in depth Circle K experience and a fun time!

VENTION 2019 District convention 2019 otherwise known as DCON is an annual convention for all Circle K members. This year I got to attend the 65th annual convention with a tag like farm fresh service. YEEHAW!! It was mooo-re than I could have imagined. There were many fresh workshops for incoming board members or just to learn something new like learning a dance. If you are looking toward your future there is also a career fair to help you sprout and makes it easy to talk to a variety of people in jobs you are interested or find something new. Not to mention the amazing talents in the Talent Show that just were so ripe and amazing. Also, as it does mark the end of the term we got to be a part of elections for district board. Not to mention, the retiring boards of all the schools of CNH got to receive well deserved for their hard work all year long. On top of that you get to bond with other members of Circle K from other schools that you may not normally see. Spending 3 days and 2 nights really makes you close.

April WAW WAW, short for Weekend of Awesomeness Weekend, is a divisional event where our division, Desert Oasis, gathers as a whole for service, fellowship, and leadership. We get to hang out with Circle K members from our sister schools in Las Vegas, sharing experiences in service participations. For April WAW, it was held at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Events like Trevor Project Workshop, Chewy Boba fundraiser & social, and Relay for Life were organized by Circle K at UNLV, as well as their end of the year banquet. We got to conclude the term with UNLV members and also meet their new board. It was a great opportunity for members to bond with people from our sister schools.
Circle K at UCR members went to Relay for Life and do service with members from UNLV. Look at the beautiful smiles on their faces and you will know how much they were enjoying going out for service and bonding with our sister school!
We also got invited to UNLV’s Circle K end of the year banquet, and to celebrate the retirement of their old board and the induction of their new board! They also had the honor to take a picture with Desert Oasis’ mascot!

May WAW I went to the May WAW event - keep riverside clean and beautiful as we went out in the morning to pick up the trash on the street. We separated into groups and went on different sides of the road and try to keep Riverside clean. We also partnered up when some people were holding the trash bags and the other half picking up the trash. Teamwork makes the dream work. As we were picking trash, we also got a chance to talk to other members and catch up with each other's life. It was great to bond with Circle K members from other schools. It was a fun experience overall and I can't wait to go to other service events with CKI.
- Janice Lee I attended the Kids Rock Sports Day during May WAW. Since it was an event that was a part of WAW, there were a lot of attendees! We all gathered at a park, split into two teams and played a variety of active games like capture the flag. It was a lot of fun whether you were watching others running around and working with their team members or you were the one running around. We even had members from our sister school, University of Las Vegas, attending as well and I thought it was a really nice opportunity to get to know them and bond. The proceeds we made from the Sports Day goes towards our KROCK funds and I applaud Emily Candido for working so hard on the event. She even brought snacks and water for everyone to enjoy during the down time. Overall, it was a wonderful event with great weather in which we all got to gather at a park and spend some quality time together under the sun.

End OF the y the gran On May 12, 2019, Circle K at UCR celebrated the end of an eventful year at our End of the Year Banquet. This event reflected upon our club’s accomplishments, spotlighted members deserving of recognition, and saw the retirement of the old board and installation of the new one. The event began with a presentation of the year’s total hour counts, the presentation of the year’s winning family, and the revelation of the new year’s family heads. Family head revelations are one of my favorite parts of banquet, because I love seeing people jump into leadership positions after having known them since they joined CKI at UCR. Next, we had delicious tacos and horchata from El Ojo de Agua, which were great! While eating, each attendee was presented with a superlative, many of which were hilarious! Later, we presented awards, presented a new club theme, and finished the event with presidents’ addresses and a newly installed board. After clean-up, members were able to pay $5 to pie any new e-board member. It was messy and admittedly a little painful, but getting pied was ultimately fun and a great way to fundraise for our club. Banquet is one of the best events this club hosts any year, and I highly recommend attending as many as you can before you graduate. I look forward to all that we will celebrate at Banquet 2020 - see y’all there!

year Banquet: nd finale
Congratulations to Samantha for winning service of the year, Amy for leadership of the year, and Jamie for fellowship of the year.
The retirement of board members of the 20182019 term concluded their year. Thank you for all your hard work and effort, and it was an awesome year in CKI at UCR. It would not be the same without all the board members. However, this does not mark the end of their journey in CKI.
The new CKI board for the 2019-2020 term was also inducted during the end of the year banquet. Although they have already started their work in spring, this was the time they finally got inducted officially. Keep up the good work and continue the spirit in CKI at UCR!
