M ESSAGES ERIC A APO ST O LO S Hi there! I hope you are excited for this new school year and all the fun, upcoming stuffhappening in Circle K! You know what that means... more ARTICLES! Speaking of articles, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this newsletter. Especially to you members who go out and attend these events and write articles about your experience. It helps add to each newsletter’s character and length. It not only helps me, but it helps YOU reach your MRP status, so continue to go to events and write those articles!
C ALVIN C H AU , PRESID ENT Hello everyone, Calvin Chau, President of Circle K International at UC Riverside, checking into the Summer Newsletter ready for another sweet treat! With classes going into full spring soon, I hope you are all handling and preparing well for the upcoming quarter. I also hope you are all getting excited for the Fall quarter because that is when Circle K International at UC Riverside will be going into full spring as well! However, more importantly, I hope you’re excited for the second newsletter that Erica has been working hard to create for us! No matter what we were doing over the summer, CKI at UCR was also active this past summer and this newsletter perfectly reflects what we have been up to. Please take the time to read through this sweet-tastic newsletter to see what we have been up to and to recognize all of the hard work that our members do for this club. Whether it was volunteering at the 626 Night Market, bonding with the division at July WAW, developing their leadership at the District Professional Development Conference, or even writing newsletter articles, our members were hard at work over the summer and making memories
that were special to them. Make sure to compliment Erica on all of her hard work as well with this refreshing summer release, especially after seeing the first newsletter she made! I almost had a cavity from how sweet it was. Good job Erica! Anyways, I hope you enjoy R’Sweet Story: Volume VIII, Issue II!
M AX RIC O , LIEU T ENANT GO VERNO R Hello UCR! I hope you've all had a great and relaxing summer, because fall quarter and Circle K activities are going full steam ahead! This is my favorite time of the Circle K year because I get to meet so many new faces - faces that will someday be the leaders of our club. When I half-heartedly attended my rst Info Night two years ago I never imagined I would fall so in love with the club and end up where I am today. I hope that all of you new members will have similar experiences! As for the division, Desert Oasis is doing wonderful things! I was able to visit Las Vegas for 9 days in September and I attended a total of 14 events with Circle K, Key Club, and Kiwanis. While there, I tabled for the member-less Circle K club at the College of Southern Nevada and I got 91 sign ups! And even better news, the club now has an executive board! Speaking of executive boards, the formerly inactive CKI at Norco College now has a full executive board as well! The October Weekend of Awesomeness Weekend was this past weekend and although I lost my voice, I was very happy to see you all there! October WAW attendees got to enjoy a weekend full to the brim with service, leadership, and fellowship with not only our division, but even with our California-Nevada-Hawai'i district! I look forward to seeing you all at Fall Training Conference next month! The committee has been working very hard and it's an event you don't want to miss! This week is also Service Unity Week, so remember to keep on posting for your chance to win a Hydro ask! Keep being awesome, CKI at UCR! I look forward to another amazing year with my favorite people!! Oh, and if we haven't met yet, be sure to say hi! :D

R’G ARD EN BY M AX RICO This spring quarter our club participated in our campus' community garden - the R'Garden - every Friday morning. This service is always fun and a great way to wake yourself up in the morning. At the R'Garden our most common tasks are weeding and planting, and vegetables are available to students for free once they are ready to harvest! We identify and remove weeds to ensure that the garden's vegetables fully receive all their nutrients and that they grow up to be healthy, strong, and delicious. We also plant various vegetables, and with every R'Garden visit we get to see the saplings we've planted grow more and more until they're finally food! I participated in this service near the beginning of the quarter and planted some lettuce, and by the time I went back several weeks later they were giant and almost ready to eat! R'Garden is one of my favorite services because we get to see our work grow and eventually even taste it - all while de-stressing through gardening!
HELPING HAND S F O O D PANTRY BY NATHAN W O NG Helping Hands Food Pantry, located in San Bernandino, CA, is a local food pantry that supports the San Bernandino county and surroundings. Volunteering here gives us the opportunity to do a various amount of tasks that prepare the pantry to be ready to distribute food. Some tasks we accomplish when we visit are peeling brussel sprouts and other vegetables to remove older leaves, removing rotten fruits and vegetables from the clean batches, bagging "goodie bags" to be distributed, and moving and organizing various produce to different locations across the pantry for further use. The pantry is a place that we frequent as it supports a large county which is in need of help. There are also various animals from cats to dogs that roam around the pantry as we do our work that make the time go by even faster! I encourage all members to try out going to the food pantry as you do actual work that leads to some quite amazing results!
D O G G IEPO O LO ZA BY KEV IN NARIO This was a service I was looking forward to since I love dogs. The only duty we had was judging competitions. The other positions were lled up by park employees. Much of our day consisted of sitting and making sure the dogs didn’t go too crazy. Throughout the day, we judged four competitions: the tiny dog race, the talent competition, the dog-owner look-alike competition, and the dog swimsuit contest (yes, that’s a thing). The dogs in every competition were very cute. The costumes they wore made choosing a winner in the contests very difficult. It made me wish that we could have given all of them a prize. According to the event coordinator, there were over 500 dogs that came to this event. Now, that’s a lot of dogs. So many of them were running around with other dogs, while others swam in the pool, fetching the toys thrown at them. It was really cool seeing dogs having fun with their owners, and it made me wish that I had a dog that I could’ve brought to play with the other dogs. I would de nitely go to another service like this. Any service with dogs is one that is worth going to!
