R’ G ARD E N R’G ARD EN BY SAM I YA I JAZ - M ARCH 10, 2017 Every Friday morning from 9-11 AM, a group of us walk to the R’Garden located near Lot 30. The R’Garden is a community garden that provides opportunity for people to learn about sustainability. The first time we went to R’Garden, we weeded at the beginning. Then, we harvested fresh kale and rainbow chard for the R’Pantry on campus. I felt like I was making a difference as I was harvesting the vegetables. The second time we went to R’Garden, we continued weeding to make room for new crops. It was great getting to know the members of Circle K in a smaller group.

BY SA BRIN A Y A N G A PRIL 11, 2017 For those that have yet to attend this event, R’ Pantry Stocking is the club’s newest recurring service events and that day was the first day of this service event. R’ Pantry is a recently established program on campus that aims to reduce food insecurity and end Highlander Hunger. The pantry includes items ranging from personal care to non-perishable foods to even child care items for those in need. Every other Tuesday from 3-5pm, members go to the Bear’s Den at the Highlander Union Building to help stock up the pantry so that it is ready to go for distribution days (Wednesday 10:30am-1:30pm and Thursday 11:30am-1:00pm). We do this by unloading the truck that is filled with items that are donated from places such as the dining halls onto a cart to move them all to the Bear’s Den. From there, we unpack and organize each item onto the shelves of the pantry. In addition to that, we also recycled the boxes that the items came in to reuse them in the future. The volunteers involved in the program encouraged all of us to utilize R’ Pantry, as any student is welcome to take items from the pantry as long as they have enough points (each student is awarded 8 points per week to purchase these items).

A D O PT -A -ST RE E T BY SE A N A D V E RSA LO - A PRIL 29, 2017 On April 29th, CKI @ UCR headed to the street that they adopted from the city of Riverside. Parking at a nearby Jack-in-a-Box, we popped open the trunk of one of the cars we arrived in, gearing up to make our city beautiful once again. We placed our gloves and bright orange vests on, taking with us handfuls of trash bags and trash pickers. The street we headed to was a few blocks down from where we arrived. I’ve been to Adopt-a-Streets before and this was the first time we encountered someone on our street. He asked for a bag, to clean out a nearby shopping cart for him to use. It was a small favor that we were happy to do. We gave the homeless man one of our bags and continued on our way to clean the streets. Lots of little oddities were here and there, from cigarette butts to cryptic notes. Each of us split into pairs, switching off bag duty to picking up trash duty as we traveled down the street. After traveling one side for an hour, we reached the end of our street and began cleaning along the other sidewalk down the street. After another hour, we finished both sides! We ended the service knowing that our streets were back to being clean and beautiful once again!

CLEAN UP BY CELINA NGO APRIL 19, 2017 In support of the UC wide smoke/tobacco-free policy, UC Riverside hosted the Butt Bash right on campus. This service was about how harmful cigarette butts and other several tobacco-based products were not biodegradable discarded debris. Not only are they not biodegradable, but cigarettes also pollute the air that we breathe in. However, this event mainly was about picking up the many cigarette butts that were littering the ground on our UC Riverside campus. When I first started to go to my site to pick up the loitered cigarette butts, I made a statement to my fellow CKI members that there would be five cigarette butts at the most because our school is supposed to be a tobacco-free campus after all. But by the end of this event, we had picked up almost 80+ cigarette butts that was on our assigned site, which was the Arts building area, the CHASS INTS building, and the CHASS INTN building. I was surprised to see how much cigarette butts we picked up and threw away. It was a nice service to attend, being able to clean up our campus a bit despite it being fairly hot that day.

CLEAN UP BY SAM RATAN AV IPUPO N G - M AY 13, 2017 On May 13, 2017, members of Circle K went to a trail near Hole Lake in Riverside to participate in The Great American Clean Up to clean up Riverside! We went around the trail to pick up trash such as plastic wrappers and cigarette butts. Circle K members were also provided with lunch at City Hall was served on dustpans. They also provided us with free t-shirts! This service was memorable because we were able to help beautify our city. The members were also able to get to know each other as a way to pass the time while cleaning up. If Circle K gets another chance to participate in The Great American Clean Up again next year I highly recommend going!

BY KARO LYN JARAN ILLA - M ARCH 17 - 19, 2017 - FIRS T T IM E AT T EN DEE What’s a more spook-tacular way to end the Circle K term than with District Convention?? To start off the event, Wesley Chan and Philip Wang of Wong Fu Productions appeared as keynote speakers! They spoke about all the things that many of us college students worry about: knowing what to do with the rest of our lives, the importance of pursuing multiple interests, and relationships! It was really assuring listening to their experiences with starting off film-making and how their lives progressed after. on saturday, we proceeded with caucuses for the Elected District Board and International Board positions. Hearing the proposals all the candidates spoke about really made me realize how much people want to contribute to and improve the club! Our club met after the Caucasus to deliberate on the candidates. It was really cool being able to directly input opinions on who/what we thought was best for the club. later, we attended very fun and informative workshops! Two of my favourites were Microaggressions and The Art of Drawing. With this DCON being my first and last one, I along with 5 other graduating seniors from UCR attended the Senior Honors Reception where we received a stole and a certificate to the afterlife! After wards, we gathered for dinner where Our school received 22 AWARDs! One we were awarded was “ 1ST PLACE OUTSTANDING TOTAL ACHIEVEMENT” FOR GOLD DIVISION! All of this recognition would not have been possible without all of you guys, so THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK AND BEING AN AWESOME CLUB!! we ended Saturday with an amazing Talent Show featuring skits, dance routines, and musical acts from some very gifted Circle K members throughout the district! There were also various night time activities after the Talent Show which included photo booths, games, and a dance floor! Things settled down Sunday as the 2016-2017 District Board retired and the 2017-2018 District Board was installed!! Our past District Governor, Alex D. Nguyen, gave a touching farewell speech. Once all business with the District was over, Desert Oasis stepped outside the center to give a Divisional toast to the term which officially ended my DCON experience! Parts of me regret waiting until my very last year to attend DCON, but in the end, I am still so glad I was able to attend one! It is truly amazing to see how hard everyone in the club at the home, division, and district level works at making this organization what it is. It really puts into perspective only a small part of the “ I” in Circle K International! Thank you to Sienna Serrano and her DCON Committee for putting such a wonderful event together. All the memories made here are definitely ones I’ll take with me to the afterlife!
"Now?" "Yeah right now." "Okay~" "WHOSE SIDE?!" Having Desert Oasis' Creativity & Spirit Executive Assistant Vanessa Kumnoonsate help lead UCR's cheers together with me was really wonderful and a lot of fun! Taking part in cheers is always one of my favorite parts of district events but I want to share about what makes District Convention in particular special to me. District Convention is THE event where Circle K'ers from California, Nevada, and Hawaii unite in one place to celebrate a whole year's worth of achievements. With 2016-2017 being my second term as a board officer, I have learned more of the hardships behind the scenes of what it takes for our school to be called up for an award. For every award, there is an application to be filled out, letters of recommendations to be written and asked for, and these are not simple friends. The board of officers and the club members have worked and put so much time and effort into the club so that it is a place for everyone and that everyone finds fun somewhere, while helping make a difference. While we do not do it for the recognition, getting some is nice. It is nice to bring certificates and awards back home, for the other members to see and for future generations to show them that this is what we accomplished and you can do the same and more. I am very thankful to have served alongside, all proudly Distinguished, President Kim-Mai Hoang, Vice President of Service Tanisha Tyler, Vice President of Administration Alex Zhang, and Secretary Amanda Mai, and I am extremely glad to be able to call myself a member of CKI at UCR. "WHOOOOSE SIDE?!" "RRRR'SIDE!!"

On April 27th in Boyce Hall there was the first workshop of the term - Leveling Up Your Involvement In CKI Workshop! In this workshop, we were able to learn a lot about the Divisional Leadership Team of 2016-17 as well as hear from various District Committee members from 2014 to 2017! The MD&E Chair covered a lot of different leadership opportunities that we as members can take part in outside of just CKI at UCR. As the night progressed, we were able to hear from every single members of the Divisional Leadership Team. These team members talked about the struggles they faced in their positions as well as how they came to love their positions on DLT. Then, the District Committee panelists had their turn. One by one, they helped explain each and every District Committee in detail, from the positions to the purpose of the committee. This helped a lot as most people did not know how many committees there are! All in all, it was a really nice and informative workshop that helped us see the perspectives of other people in the club who have obtained higher leadership!
BY M ICHAEL FEN G - M AY 7, 2017 - FIR ST TIM E ATTEN DEE STC for me was the first large scale event where I had the chance to meet people from other divisions. As a new CKI member, I was blown away by the spirit, creativity, and atmosphere of STC. From the moment I arrived at the venue to when I had to say goodbye to all the new friends I met, I could feel the love for service every attendee had. Every workshop I participated in was chock full of useful information about CKI and life in general. One workshop in particular that stood out to me was the spirit workshop. As a new member to CKI, cheers were new territory to me. I would feel awkward during cheers and many times I would just stand there awkwardly. The workshop pulled me out of my comfort zone and showed me just how much fun cheering with your friends can be. It was awkward at first, but when the whole room started shouting out at the top of their lungs I found myself doing the same. The initial awkwardness melted away into pure excitement and the room went through cheer after cheer. Another part of STC that really stood out to me was all the small interactions I had with people throughout the day. Everyone I talked to was extremely friendly and had good vibes all around. Everyone was there to have fun and learn through all the different workshops. STC was definitely a highlight of my CKI experience. It introduced me to many amazing people and took me out of my comfort zone. I learned many new skills and a new-found appreciation for cheers.
BY SEAN ADV ERSALO - M AY 7, 2017 - RETU RN IN G ATTEN DEE Another year, another Spring Training conference! On May 7th, members of our club headed to Cal State Fullerton to be educated on several different topics – such as Board positions, fundraising, DFIs, DSIs, professional development, etc. Welcomed with an early morning breakfast prepared by CSUF’s Kiwanians (Thank y’all for doing that!), we headed to workshop session one after a brief introduction session. The first workshop I attended was E-Board 101, breaking down what we should know as the executive board for Circle K International. We played a quick bonding activity and broke up into groups for our respective positions, networking with those in our respective position facilitated by a District Board member or someone who previously held that position. Other workshops I attended were a VPA workshop, Service panel, Battle of the Sexes, and lastly an MD&E workshop! Fun fact; did you know our own Kristy Dai was the workshops chair? I always look forward to these types of events because I always get to see friends from District that I haven’t seen in awhile. Once we see each other, a smile rushes to our face as we try to make most of our short breaks to catchup! District events like these also help me see what we can bring back to our club to make next year’s term even better! To those reading, hope to see y’all at STC 2019!
We started the night off with a series of icebreakers, ranging from Hot Potato to I Love My Neighbor. The Brunswick had a special promotion where we could play from 8pm until closing time! My lane ordered fries and we took turns snacking on them while scoring strikes down our lane. Our club managed to occupy about 4 lanes, which is an incredible turnout! The bowling social was so much fun because it gave me the opportunity to go out and connect with new and returning members before the workload from all my classes kicked in. It was also great seeing our club show off our amazing bowling skills (especially mine)! If you love bowling and free friends, then you should come out to the next bowling social! P.S. Shout-out to Vanessa Kumnoonsate for doing an amazing job planning this event!

BY JANENG O - M AY 20, 2017 - NEW ATTEND EE The Final Stage was held on May 20th 2017, an end of the year banquet hosted by Circle K at UC Riverside. It was a night that was filled with exciting performances, presentations of awards, and speeches to wrap up the 2016-2017 year. Attendees that were a part of this special night included our very own Circle K members, Kiwanians, Circle K members from other campuses, and many other distinguished guests. Everyone was brought together in one place to celebrate the achievements reached by the Circle K members at UC Riverside. The officers presented a variety of club reports, such as total number of service hours and leadership hours. New members that joined during the spring quarter were installed. Graduating seniors were recognized and were given gifts to reminisce back on their time spent in the club. Old family heads retired and new family heads were revealed. A Mexican-themed dinner was provided to our guests. As dinner came to an end, the night continued to dance away with more exhilaration. The 2016-2017 Executive and Appointed Board bid farewell as we inducted the 2017-2018 Executive and Appointed Board. The retiring Executive Board and new Executive Board gave performances that brought laughter and cheerful smiles to everyone’s faces. The 2017-2018 theme was revealed to be Sweet Escape! The entire night brought a warm feeling to all the attendee’s hearts as they looked back at the accomplishments done in the past year. As we say adieu to the past term, we welcome the new one with open arms!
