Hey Scots! I can’t believe we have already reached the end of this term. I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve as Carlmont Key Club’s Newsletter Editor and create a total of 7 newsletters. Katarina will do an amazing job this new term and I am so excited for what she has in store for you guys. I had a blast working with her to create this month’s issue. Thank you all so much for this opportunity and I can’t wait to serve as your next president :)

A M e s sage f r o m y o u r Hey Carlmont Key Clubbers!

President

I can’t believe that it’s already the end of the term!! Our club has really gone above and beyond this year and so proud of everything we’ve achieved all while quarantined! Thank you so much for persevering and attending each of our events and meetings. It’s been such an honor serving as your president this term and I can’t wait to see what the next year will bring :) As the term comes to a close and the new one begins, don’t forget to look out for all the awards you were qualified for at DCON and for upcoming leadership positions at the division and district level! I’m excited to pass on the torch to an extremely capable and extraordinary board and club. And for some context, we ended this term with over 10,000 banana points in the division and over 3500 hours served as a club, with each member serving an average of 45 hours this term! :0 This is an all time high for our club and any club in the division so big congratulations to everyone!

Thank you so much for this term,

Ashley Zheng

Allison Hoang Freshman This month I attended the Free Rice escape room event. I really enjoyed this event because as a team, my group solved fun puzzles made by the kind hosts of the escape room. During the escape room, there was a google slide with an amusement park because the objective was to find and get to the exit. Along the way, we found hints that told us where our next destination would be. In order to move to our next destination, we played for a certain number of grains for Free Rice. In the end, it was very rewarding because my group finished the escape room first, and I also feel good about earning many grains of rice from the Free Rice portion!

DIY Bears for CR Foundation Lisa Nguyen Senior I spent my Sunday afternoon making bears as an object of comfort for children going through tough times. I very much enjoyed scavenging around my house to find spare items to create these bears, like random pieces of felt, buttons & mismatched socks. I actually used scrap materials from previous events throughout this term to stuff my bears. This event made me feel like I was young again, creating these little bears. Creating these bears felt very unique & personal since it’s going directly to a child somewhere in the United States.

Soul Box Making service event Claire Tseng Junior The Soul Box Making Service Event was held after our weekly club meeting on March 10th. We created Soul Boxes, where each box represented an individual who lost their life to gun violence. By creating these boxes, we were able to honor the lives of many. After the instructional portion, we split into breakout rooms of our choice and talked, listened to music, and helped each other out with our boxes. Overall, I had a really great time and I was able to meet a lot of new members. All the soul boxes would soon be delivered/dropped off to my house where I will be packaging and sending them to the Soul Boxes Project center. This event was a hit and many of our members contributed up to 5 extra hours after the zoom to make more boxes!

Jocelyn Owen Sophomore Arts for Little Hearts was an interclub event between Aragon, Carlmont, and Lowell. At the event, participants made bird-themed crafts that would go to hospitalized children. I upcycled toilet paper rolls into birds and also folded some origami cranes. Other people made birds by wrapping yarn around a cardboard template or simply coloring in a bird image. The ideas are endless! I liked that people could be creative with what they wanted to make and I’m happy that all these fun crafts will bring joy to kids!

Mr. Key Club was an amazing opportunity to see Key Club members from other schools while also having fun and raising money for the Pediatric Trauma Program! With the theme of Crazy Rich Key Clubbers, contestants Ryan, John, Landon, Hunter, and Ian competed in various categories to be Mr. Key Club 2021. While showing us their best formal wear, spirit wear, and casual attire, the contestants also showcased their best pickup lines, displayed their knowledge in Key Club trivia, answered audience questions during a Q&A session, and put a spotlight on a talent of theirs. In between the competitors showing off their skills and style, there were incredible performances! The LTG elects, Madeline and Courtney, did a breathtaking rendition of Can’t Help Falling in Love With You on the alto sax and cello. Other performances included a cover of Days in the Sun accompanied by a piano, and a dance to Juice by Lizzo. Once all of the judges’ scores were tallied, Carlmont’s treasurer, Ian, won! With the themed virtual backgrounds, commemorative overlays, a raffle supporting the Pediatric Trauma Program, and an extremely enthusiastic and supportive chat, the 17th annual Mr. Key Club pageant was a fantastic experience full of laughter and joy. I can’t wait for next year’s!

Isabelle Kraemer Freshman Dog & Cat Toy Making Service Event was an exciting event where participants created handmade dog and cat toys for our local animal shelters! We made these toys out of old T-shirts, socks, and other materials that can be found around the house. I was very excited to participate in this event because I love helping out others, especially when it involves animals! Since I had many old T-shirts, I decided to make the braided rope dog toys. It was very simple to make, but still very fun! Even if this event was over Zoom, I still enjoyed it tremendously and would definitely do it again!

Apri l SOSP: Community Outreach What is Commuity Outreach? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Litterati App Event Carlmont Key Club is hosting an independent service event that allows members to download the Litterati app, gather trash around their neighborhood, and help scientists gather data about pollution in exchange for service hours. To learn more, contact Claire Bing at (650) 421-1252, or Annabel Chia at (650) 284-8473!

Community Outreach is about giving, contributing, and helping those that cannot help themselves. Reach out to local organizations and partners. volunteer and make a difference in your home, school, and community! From helping your neighbor to hosting food drives, there are so many things you can do! Community Outreach can mean something different for everyone, but the basic definition is the act of providing services to populations that are unable to reach them. Some common outreach activities may include donating clothing or other lightly used objects to non-profit organizations, helping build homes for others in less fortunate countries, and overall being a good samaritan. To fulfill this month’s SOSP, Carlmont Key Club has organized a month-long service event using the Litterati App. Help us better our community by picking up trash and completing cleaning challenges!
