Newsletter Editor

Hi Key Club! Congrats on finishing up your service hours for the MRP! I know that many members were working hard to meet the bronze, silver, or gold requirements to receive the MRP at DCON. I hope you were all able to accomplish your goals! We have a nice amount of online service events prepared for February as well, including an ongoing event for Free Rice. Be sure to continue attending service events, even though the MRP is over! Our club still needs to reach our service hour goal and the category under Distinguished Club. Thank you for all of your participation thus far! We are continuing with online service events and in-person club meetings this month. However, our February DCM will be held in-person! Be sure to RSVP before February 26th in order to attend this division event and make bookmarks for young readers. I hope you enjoy this winter themed newsletter! I will be passing the torch to the next Newsletter Editor very soon, but I hope to be able to continue serving you next term in a different position. Best of luck to all of the officer candidates! Elections are on Monday, February 7th, from 4:30-6:30pm on Zoom.

Hey Scots!

A M e s sage f r o m y o u r

This month I have a few more special announcements. First of all, a big thank you to everyone who came to our club elections on Monday, February 7th! I hope you all enjoyed listening to all of our candidates’ amazing speeches, and ongrats to Avirral Agarwal for winning the raffle. We will also be hosting committee elections in early March, so be sure to stay involved if you want to apply for a leadership position as a committee chair or a committee members on one of our five committees (Service Project, Fundraising, Publicity/Communications, Members Develpment, and Social Events).

President

I hope you all had a fantastic winter break! January was full of online events that many of you guys participated in. I know it is tough to go back online after such a fun semester in-person, but we promise that in-person events will return soon after COVID cases decline. But, we were still able to host over 6 events regardless!

In February, we will continue with Valentine’s themed online events and start out transition to the new term. I hope to see you guys at our next club meeting OR service event. Feel free to reach out with any questions :)

Best,

Claire Tseng Claire Tseng President tsengclaire95@gmail.com

Dog & Cat Toy Making 6 attendees for 12 hours

Colin Zhang Sophomore The Dog and Cat Toy Making Event was a relaxing and enjoyable experience. We used household materials such as fabric and yarn to make cat and dog toys for animal shelters. There were easy to follow instructions to create a variety of toys, from pom poms to braided ropes. Personally, I made adorable little pom pom balls for cats. It took me a couple of tries to get them to hold their shape but the process was really fun! I hope there are more DIY craft events like this one in the future.

Cards & Bracelets for Children’s Miracle Network Manya Kumar Freshman Making Cards and Bracelets for Children’s Miracle Network was a fun and relaxing service event over Zoom! We started with a fun ice breaker and then got our materials. We were given a lot of freedom for what we could make which inspired everyone to get creative! I tried making different-sized cards and decorating them in different ways with washi tape, markers, and brush pens. My favorite part of the event was when I got to see everyone hold up the cards they made for the group photo!

Jocelyn Owen Junior The Cards and Bracelets for Children’s Miracle Network was an online event where participants made bracelets and cards. I enjoyed creating colorful cards with positive messages for hospitalized children. It was also nice to take a break from schoolwork and make cards at the event. I’m glad that we could make cards and bracelets to bring some joy to children in the Children’s Miracle Network!

Campus Cleanup

21 attendees for 30.5 hr Grace Kimberg Junior The After School Cleanup was a fun event that took place after school! Attendees broke off into groups, went around campus, and picked up trash to help beautify the school. It was a great way to bond with fellow Key Clubbers and to help make our school a nice place to be! At the end of the event, it was fun to see which team had collected the most trash, and it was a great time overall. I really enjoyed the event and I can’t wait to do the next one!

Charity Miles 12 volunteers for 128.4 hr

Emma Goldman Sophomore Charity Miles is an ongoing Carlmont Key Club event in which participants log their time spent running, walking, hiking, etc., and raise money for charity as a result of their movement. During the month of January, there were two walking occasions I logged on to the app. The first time, I walked my dog around the neighborhood for about an hour while listening to music. The second time, I went on a hike with my family at Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve. Both times I simply opened the Charity Miles app on my phone and clicked the “record” button to start recording my walk. Overall, I think Charity Miles is a great app idea, as not only does it encourage individuals to walk or run more, but also is for a great cause. While walking, I felt that it was nice to get fresh air and do something beneficial to my physical health. I am looking forward to continuing to use the app.

Bookmarks for Liberation Library

16 attendees for 36 hr Samantha Bishop Sophomore This event was a virtual bookmark making event that took place on zoom. During this service event, we made bookmarks for Liberation Library, an organization that delivers books to young, incarcerated youth. The bookmarks were made using a variety of supplies and the volunteers who participated in this event were given creative freedom, so there was a wide variety of bookmarks made. The event lasted a total of one and a half hours. During that time, we not only created the bookmarks, but we also did an icebreaker and learned about Liberation Library and the upcoming service events. The volunteers that participated in this event were also encouraged to continue making bookmarks during their free time. When the bookmarks were finished, the volunteers individually mailed them to Liberation Library.

D34N Hearts for Love Grace Kimberg Junior At the D34N Hearts for Love event, Key Clubbers from all over the district got to come together and make origami hearts to show their support for AAPI families who have lost loved ones. I really enjoyed being able to show my support for the AAPI community, especially after the rough time they have been having throughout COVID. It was also fun to make the origami hearts because I had never made them before, so I learned something new! In addition to listening to great music, supporting the community, and making the hearts, I enjoyed being able to hang out with people from our division. Overall, the event was extremely fun, and I can’t wait for the next one!

Arts for Little Hearts Manya Kumar Freshman Arts for Little Hearts was a Valentine’s Day themed origami Zoom service event organized by Alice Finkelstein. First, we talked about our favorite holiday (most of us like Christmas). Then, we began making origami hearts and flowers while listening to the Division playlist. The best part of the event was when I was following a heart box tutorial and I turned it over to find that there was an origami heart on the back of the box! I thought I had to separately glue on mini hearts but it was actually the same paper that makes the little heart and the box! I hope our arts and crafts cheer up the hospitalized children they will be sent to!

Jan ua r y S OS P : Children’s Miracle Network What is Children’s Miracle Network? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Cards and Bracelets for Children’s Mriracle Network Carlmont Key Club hosted an online service event for Children’s Miracle Network during January. Attendees created cards and bracelets for hospitalized children using a variety of materials. They also had the opportunity to meet new people in breakout rooms, and chat with other members!

15

Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals in the US and Canada. They are an organization dedicated to helping hospitalized kids by funding hospitals, research, and families who can’t afford to pay for healthcare. Find your nearest CMN hospital to contribute. Serving over 10 million kids in the US and Canada, CMN is able to donate to 172 hospitals that provide 32 million treatments per year for kids. By contributing to this organization’s goal, you are able to make a difference in the lives of a child, a family, and a healthcare facility. In January, Carlmont Key Club hosted a service event dedicated to this organization and their cause. By making cards and bracelets for hospitalized children to receive, attendees were able to make a difference in their community and support the lives of children.

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

Each district is made up of one or more states led by a Governor Cal-Nev-Ha District

Key Club Int’l encompasses all clubs within its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International. - Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be participate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc. - The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family. - District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii) - Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with: - 45,000 members - 780 Key Clubs - 77 divisions - 18 regions - Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term in order to interact with these different clubs is the Summer Leadership Conference (in place of ICON due to COVID restrictions).
