What’s up Key Club! Happy summer! Time seems to be flying by extra fast this year, so the end of the school year really came as a surprise to me! Thank you for your dedication and commitment throughout this second semester, even with all of the hardships. However, Key Club is a year round club, so we still have activies planned for the summer! :) We’ve also started to implement more in-person events into our monthly agendas! It was so nice to talk to everyone and see each other in-person at both the banquet and end of year picnic, especially affter a full year of online service events. As for June, we have our In-person park cleanup on the morning of the 19th, and are working to have at least one in person event per month as we transition into the new school year. This month’s newsletter is picnic themed, which rightfully goes along with the theme of the end of year celebrations that we’ve been having. As summer nears, be sure to look back and reflect on all of the challenges that you’ve been able to overcome this year, from Zoom classes to technological barriers. We’re proud of you! It definitely wasn’t easy, but normalcy is coming back soon, and I wish you all a relaxing summer that is able to refresh you before the next school year,

Enjoy your break!

Hey Key Clubbers!

A M e s sage f r o m y o u r

Throughout the past month, we had a lot of awesome service and social events, as well as an ongoing fundraiser. I am so happy that I finally got to meet some of y’all in person for the first time! Whether that be at the banquet or end of the year celebration, I hope I get to meet more of you guys. We are starting to transition to more in person events (yay) so hopefully we can make that happen. For the month of June, we will have one club meeting on the 17th from 3:!5-4:15 with guest speaker Wendy Kang, who will talk about the meaning behind being a volunteer. We also will have lots of virtual and in person service, social, and fundraising opportunities.

President

I can’t believe that we are finally done with school and with summer finally at reach! I am so impressed by everyone who continued to serve their community despite it being finals and testing season. You are making a difference!

Besides participating in Key Club over the summer, make sure that you are all taking time for yourself because after a tough year, you all deserve it! Feel free to reach out to me if you ever have questions or want to talk :)

Have a great summer!

Virtual Cardmaking for hospitalized kids

Kaitlyn Kwan Junior The Cards for Hospitalized Kids event was a service event in which attendees made and sent cards to hospitalized kids. These cards contained inspiring messages that aimed to brighten childrens’ days and make them feel supported. At this event, there is an option to send virtual cards or physical cards. I sent a couple virtual cards and later created physical ones. I really enjoyed this event because it allowed attendees to have fun being creative while simultaneously making other people smile.

17 attendees for 37 hours

D34N Peace Cranes 7 attendees for 9 hours

Erica Tam Sophomore Peace Cranes was a division event led by our lieutenant governor, Courtney. The main focus of this event was to honor children who have suffered from the effects of atomic bombs. The cranes that we make are sent to the Children’s Peace Monument in Japan. The monument is inspired by Sadako Sasaki who folded cranes in hopes that it will help her recover from leukemia. Folding cranes were challenging at first, but it was relaxing as time went on. This event brought me great joy because knowing that we can make an impact overseas was heartwarming.

Arts for Little Hearts Annabel Chia Freshman Arts for Little Hearts was a really fun event and I really enjoyed making the crafts. We had an option to make many different flower crafts and I folded different origami flowers. I really enjoyed making flowers and it was a great event overall. It was great to know that these crafts would be going to a great cause and would brighten someone’s day.

16 attendees for 18.5 hr Grace Kimberg Sophomore At the May interclub between Aragon, Carlmont, Lowell, Sequoia, and South San Francisco, we wrote letters for Love for Our Elders! The nonprofit organization collects letters and distributes them to elders living in senior communities to cheer them up. The interclub was extremely fun and a great way to spend my Friday afternoon, surrounded by fellow Key Clubbers, listening to some amazing music, and giving back to the community. It was nice to know that these simple letters have the power to brighten someone’s day and put a smile on their face. I know for me personally, it has been tough not being able to see my friends in person for the past year, and I can’t imagine what it is like for seniors who cannot see their families or friends at all. I really hope the elders enjoy the cards we made, and I can’t wait to participate in other events like this one!

May DCM DCM + service event Alice Finkelstein Sophomore

The May Division Council Meeting, which was the second DCM of the term, included updates as well as a service event. At the beginning of the event, club presidents gave club updates and we went over past events. We also covered new business, which consisted of upcoming division events, district updates, recognition for the month, and Division Leadership Team announcements! After that, we made flower-themed crafts for Arts for Little Hearts, an organization that works to provide crafts as a gift to hospitalized children. There was a variety of crafts to choose from, and we could be very creative with the flowers we made - these included origami flowers, paintings of flowers, origami bookmarks, and more. I chose to make origami tulips, and I hope that they brightened a child’s day. Overall, I had a great time at this DCM and the flower-making service event and really enjoyed seeing people from the division!

Claire’s Eagle Project 8 attendees for 38 hours

in person event Claire Tseng Junior For the past two Saturdays, Key Club has been volunteering at Claire’s Eagle Project where they made 400 leis for Ralston Middle School’s graduation. They worked with other scouts as well as friends and family to fold a total of 2,800 flowers. It was really cool to see everyone come together to help in an in person event, especially since we haven’t had one in a while. What made it even more fun was the fact that we got to meet new people from both Key Club and other members of our community. I am super grateful for everyone that came to help; your hard work is definitely appreciated and I can’t wait to see the finished products!

Jun e S OS P : Health & Safety What is Health & Safety? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

June Mask Making Project Carlmont is hosting a Mask Making Project for this month’s SOSP of Heath and Safety. Join us on June 19th to sew masks for hospitals and homeless shelters using cotton fabric. No sewing experience is needed! Contact Claire Bing ((650) 4211252) or Marrisa Chow ((650) 868-8340) to learn more.

Health and Safety is made up of the regulations and procedures implemented to prevent accidents within workplaces and public environments. As the school year comes to an end, a summer of service begins! Help to promote a healthy and safe lifestyle for everyone! Educate, promote, and participate in your community to stay active. Health and Safety has especially been important throughout the pandemic as a foreign virus struck our cities. In order to keep ourselves safe, we followed guidelines and health protocols with mask wearing, but not everyone has these resources or enough of them to live their daily lives. For this reason, this month’s SOSP service event at Carlmont Key Club is the Mask Making Project. Even as protocols lift and June 15th signifies the start of a new era, healthcare workers still need more masks and appreciate all the support they can get. Help us make a difference in our community.

Intro to Ke y C l ub S tr uc tur e

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

Each district is made up of one or more states led by a Governor Cal-Nev-Ha District

Key Club Int’l encompasses all clubs within its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International. - Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be participate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc. - The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family. - District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii) - Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with: - 45,000 members - 780 Key Clubs - 77 divisions - 18 regions - Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term in order to interact with these different clubs is the Summer Leadership Conference (in place of ICON due to COVID restrictions).
