Hi Key Club! I hope your summer was a great one! As we reach the beginning of the school year (which’ll be in-person, yay!), we have some important Key Club updates + information coming your way. In July, we hosted all online events, but in August, we’ll be having a mix of online and in-person ones. From the August DCM to our Krispy Kreme Fundraiser, there’s a lot to participate in! Check out page 13 for more info about our transition as a club, and as a division. We’re also looking for your help to recruit freshmen! We’ll be present at the Freshman/Sophomore Club Fair to help spread awareness about Key Club and all of the service + leadership opportunities. If you have anyone that you would like to invite to our meetings, don’t be afraid to do so! We also have a recruitment competition and a bring a friend week program at the moment, so you’ll be rewarded for the participation of your friends. That being said, I hope you enjoy this issue with its nautical theme to end off the summer!

Wishing you a great start to the school year,

What’s up Scots!

A M e s sage f r o m y o u r

In terms of the new school year, we will be having club meetings every week on Thursday during lunch in D12 (Mr. Miskelly’s room) so be sure to join us there. Be on the lookout for a mixture of both in person and virtual events as well! We will be hosting our division’s first DCM to make toiletry kits + cards for the homeless. And to add to the fun, we will have an Ice Cream Social the day after to raise money for our club :) I hope to see more of you guys and don’t forget to bring a friend! See y’all later!

President

I hope you guys are living out the last few weeks of your summer break! I can’t believe school is starting so soon. This summer has been filled with so many service events, social events, and fundraisers. Thank you to all those who have participated in events throughout the summer despite it being your break. You all continue to amaze me with the amount of dedication you put into Key Club.

Best,

Claire Tseng Claire Tseng President tsengclaire95@gmail.com

In-person Informational Workshop 3 attendees + 1 advisor

Maya Kornyeyeva Senior The Informational workshop was a great way to kick off the second quarter, and allow members and officers to learn a little more about the transition into in-person service events, which our division hasn’t had since the start of the pandemic. During the workshop, Courtney Tai (our LTG) gave a presentation about the specific guidelines that in-person events will have, as well as some information about big upcoming conventions and training sessions that will be held in-person. Additionally, she engaged all the key clubbers in a mini-lesson about our division’s spirit chants, which are a large part of fundraising events such as FRN (Fall Rally North). Overall, the workshop gave members a good idea about what to expect from this term.

The Last Online DCM! Grace Kimberg Junior At the July DCM, we were split into two teams to make joke books and play jeopardy. For one of the rotations we made joke books out of index cards for Soaring Words, an organization that aims to cheer up children through good deeds. During the other rotation, participants played a fun game of jeopardy. The categories spanned from pop culture, to Key Club, to our Lieutenant Governor, Courtney Tai! At the event, all of the schools got sorted into their Harry Potter Houses for the Key Cup! Overall, the event was really fun and I can’t wait for the August DCM!

Jocelyn Owen Junior SPARKS Flashcards was a division-wide service event hosted by South City Key Club. We made a variety of educational flashcards such as sets for numbers, alphabet, months, animals, or anything else that is easy to learn. I made flashcards for colors and shapes and it was simple to make as all we needed were cardstock and markers. The flashcards were sent to Classroom Central, an organization that provides free materials to students in need of school supplies, so I’m sure that children will benefit from the flashcards. I really enjoyed this event since I’ve always loved creating physical sets of flashcards for all sorts of purposes. I’m glad that we could provide these materials that will help children to learn the basics and be successful at school!

Flashcards Joyce Chu Junior From the first time I heard about this event, I knew I wanted to participate in it. Making the flashcards was a great experience since there were many different kinds to choose from. Each set was satisfying to create because I was able to finish one after the other. I very much enjoyed this event. It was probably one of my favorite ones since the transition to Zoom and online service activities.

D34N Cards for 8 attendees + 1 advisor for 12 hrs Hope division event Swaraali Save Junior At the Cards for Hope service event on July 22nd, we made mini cards to include in Hope Kits, which are packages that contain sanitary items for children in need. The event was held over Zoom, and the main materials required were paper and drawing utensils. Each of the cards we created had a friendly note inside and was decorated with a colorful drawing, allowing everyone to display their creativity. The notes wished the recipients all the best for the school year ahead and aimed to brighten their mood. It was nice knowing our messages could help cheer up these children after the challenges many of them must have faced over the course of the last year. I’m glad we had the opportunity to bring some excitement and encouragement to them through these simple cards!

z o o m n o m o r e NO MORE ZOOM

Key Club is Transitioning Back in Person! What does this mean for you? - Covid Waivers for all In-person Events: Whenever you RSVP for an in-person event, a COVID waiver will be sent to you in a confirmation/instructory email. Please be sure to print + fill this waiver out prior to the event, and bring it with you! - Masking Guidelines: Masks will be encouraged during outdoor events, and are recommended to stop the spread of the pandemic. Since many attendees are often present at Key Club Events, it is out of your best interest to arrive with + wearing a mask. - Vaccination: Vaccination Status will not be required for regular service events, but there will ocassionally be events where it will be required. Keep an eye out for specifics for each in-person event in order to guarentee that you are able to attend. - Club Meetings: Our club meetings are no longer held over zoom, but at room D-12 during lunch at Carlmont! Come by every Thursday for new club updates, sticker awards, and social events. - Division Events: All division events, including interclubs and DCMs, will all be held in-person from now on! This means that the activities will be more engaging and less repetitive, but there will also be less division events since finding communal spaces for everyone to be able to attend is difficult.

A ugust S OS P : Children’s Education What is Children’s Education? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Origami Cranes for Nuclear Peace At Carlmont’s Origami Cranes for Nuclear Peace, we will be folding cranes for to help bring nuclear peace. They will be donated to the Peace Crane Project, and help children access education + all the resources they need to develop. Contact Annabel Chia at 808279@seq.org for more info!

It’s time to hit the books! Children’s Education is a branch of education theory that relates to the teaching of children from birth up to adulthood. Collect school supplies like pencils, backpacks, and crayons to donate to kids in need. Ensure that children are also provided with educational opportunities this school year. Children’s Education is important because it builds the spirit of teamwork and creates a sense of discipline in young children. This helps them grow later on and improves their communication skills, as well as the ability to work with others. For this reason, we will focus on increasing access to quality education to better the future of kids around the world. As for our club, we’ll be hosting Origami Cranes for Nuclear Peace as this month’s SOSP project. On August 26th, we’ll be making origami cranes and sending them to areas affected most by nuclear agression as a symbol of hope for young children that are unable to attend school because of these circumstances.

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

Each district is made up of one or more states led by a Governor Cal-Nev-Ha District

Key Club Int’l encompasses all clubs within its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International. - Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be participate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc. - The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family. - District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii) - Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with: - 45,000 members - 780 Key Clubs - 77 divisions - 18 regions - Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term in order to interact with these different clubs is the Summer Leadership Conference (in place of ICON due to COVID restrictions).
