Hi Key Club! As we start the fall season, it’s never been a better time to join Key Club! We’ve been present at both the Freshman/ Sophomore Club Fair and the school-wide club fair last week, so I hope you were able to see us there and learn more about our club. During August, we slowly transitioned back into in-person events with the August DCM and our Ice Cream Social Fundraiser, both of which were a great success! We also had a couple online meetings to cater to everyone’s needs, but in September, we tried to focus primarily on in-person events both on the club and division level. However, we still have a couple ongoing events and fundraisers, such as the Krispy Kreme Donut Fundraiser, so those are great to get involved in as well! For this newsletter, I hope you enjoy the library and cozy theme that serves as a slight transition from my previous summer designs. Flip through to find our past events from August, photos from our booth at Freshman Orientation, and more to enhance your Key Club experience! As always, everyone is welcome, so feel free to invite your friends to any club meetings or events to expand our family.

Best,

Katarina Povinec Katarina Povinec Newsletter Editor 806450@seq.org

Hello Key Clubbers!

A M e s sage f r o m y o u r

There are a lot of exciting events for October, including Fall Rally North and Regional Training Conference. Make sure to contact me asap if you are interested. We are continuing to do in person events at Second Harvest, a Laurel Street Clean Up, and so much more! Be on the lookout for an announcement for more service and social events!

President

I hope you all had a great first month of school. It was so great to finally meet all of you in person. We started off our member recruitment with the freshman orientation and two informational club meetings. Thank you to all the new members who joined and we can’t wait to have you all on board! We also hosted Division 34 North’s first Council Meeting where we made 300 toilettes kits for our local homeless shelters. We also had another two in-person service events for September, which were the Palo Alto Moonlight Run and Coastal Clean Up. Thank you to everyone who attended!

Please reach out if you have any questions or if you just wanna talk!

HW Social Hour + Letters to St. Jude 12 attendees + 1 advisor for 18 hr

Nate Anson Senior The Homework Social Hour + Letters to St. Jude’s event, run by Ethan Moussa and Miriya Mayenkar, was divided into separate subjects which helped students work with peers and collaborate. I was able to use the time to work on science homework and was helped by fellow classmates in the club. I highly recommend doing this event again because it kept me productive and benefited me greatly. In the second half of the event, we were also able to earn service hours through the letter making. I think it was very smart to have students join groups based on the desired learning subject and combine it with service so if this event is run again, I think it should follow a similar standard.

Shave the Day Division-Wide Service Event Mandy Mah Junior Shave the Day was a division-wide service event hosted by Lowell Key Club. During the service event, volunteers would download an app called Shave the Day and shave away. Shave the Day is an endless running game where you dodge to avoid obstacles, swipe to collect coins, and jump to shave the hair off heads. For every coin you collected, one cent would be donated to childhood cancer research. More money would be donated when you jumped to shave heads. I thought this event was a wonderful and fulfilling way to spend my time because I was having fun playing the game while raising money for childhood cancer research. The game felt different to play than other endless running games I have played before, so it did pose a little bit of a challenge, but it kept it interesting. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone with some spare time on their hands or wants to help fund childhood cancer research. Thank you to Lowell for hosting the event and introducing us all to this game!

Cranes for Peace Claire Bing Senior The Origami Cranes for Nuclear Peace event was held over Zoom on Thursday, August 26 from 4:30-6:00pm. In the event, participants folded origami cranes to support the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a group working towards disarming nuclear weapons and creating a safer world without the threat of nuclear war. After the introduction to the project and gathering our materials, the event coordinator put on music for us to listen to while following a tutorial video on how to make the cranes. Making the cranes was difficult enough to be a stimulating activity while still being a relaxing craft, and I really enjoyed the event! It was great to know that there are still organizations fighting for such a big problem that never got resolved, and this was a really enjoyable way to support their work.

August

37 attendees + 3 advisors for 63 hours Lina Saleh Sophomore On August 28th, 82 Key Club members (37 Carlmont members) attended our division’s first in-person DCM since lockdown. At the DCM, hosted by Carlmont, we made toiletry kits featuring the likes of towels and toothpaste and cards to accompany them for the homeless. The astounding turnout and number of attendees made it so that we completed the service portion of our event far earlier than we had anticipated. As someone who joined Key Club during lockdown, I had never attended an in-person DCM. I can say, with full confidence, that I thoroughly enjoyed our August DCM and it was an event that I will carry with me for a long time. After we had completed our tasks and service portion, members went on to play volleyball and spike ball (amongst others). It was great finally meeting and seeing fellow members and friends that I had made over Zoom, in person. Thank you to everybody involved in making this event happen!

Cardmaking for Hospitalized Kids 11 attendees + 1 advisor for 17.07 hrs Colin Zhang Freshman Cardmaking for Hospitalized Children was a wonderful experience for me. We wrote inspirational cards to hospitalized children while relaxing music was playing in the background. There was also an online card option available for members to send. I thought it was a great way to help the community since a simple message of encouragement could brighten someone’s day. I look forward to participating in similar events in the future!

z o o m n o m o r e NO MORE ZOOM

Key Club is Transitioning Back in Person! What does this mean for you? - Covid Waivers for all In-person Events: Whenever you RSVP for an in-person event, a COVID waiver will be sent to you in a confirmation/instructory email. Please be sure to print + fill this waiver out prior to the event, and bring it with you! - Masking Guidelines: Masks will be encouraged during outdoor events, and are recommended to stop the spread of the pandemic. Since many attendees are often present at Key Club Events, it is out of your best interest to arrive with + wearing a mask. - Vaccination: Vaccination Status will not be required for regular service events, but there will ocassionally be events where it will be required. Keep an eye out for specifics for each in-person event in order to guarentee that you are able to attend. - Club Meetings: Our club meetings are no longer held over zoom, but at room D-12 during lunch at Carlmont! Come by every Thursday for new club updates, sticker awards, and social events. - Division Events: All division events, including interclubs and DCMs, will all be held in-person from now on! This means that the activities will be more engaging and less repetitive, but there will also be less division events since finding communal spaces for everyone to be able to attend is difficult.

S eptemb er S OS P : Pediatric Trauma Program What is the Pediatric Trauma Program? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Krispy Kreme Donut Fundraiser From August to October, Carlmont has been hosting a Krispy Kreme Fundraiser to get donations for PTP! By donating $10, you’ll receive an online certificate to Krispy Kreme that you can redeem any time for a free dozen of donuts. Contact Jocelyn Owen at (650) 544-6372 to learn more!

The Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) is an organization dedicated to reducing the amount of children killed or injured by trauma. Support the Pediatric Trauma Program by spreading awareness and fundraising this month. Check out the numerous guides and powerpoints for more ideas on fundraising and service projects. Also start fundraising for your Fall Rally PTP donations! PTP is a Key Club preferred charity, which means that we also do fundraisers and service events related to this organization throughout the year. PTP is extremely harmful and a danger to all children around the world, so by donating to our cause, you are helping prevent injury and save the lives of children. This month, Carlmont Key Club has organized a Krispy Kreme Fundraiser to raise funds for PTP. Donate today to enjoy a sweet treat and contribute to an important charity.

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

Each district is made up of one or more states led by a Governor Cal-Nev-Ha District

Key Club Int’l encompasses all clubs within its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International. - Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be participate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc. - The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family. - District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii) - Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with: - 45,000 members - 780 Key Clubs - 77 divisions - 18 regions - Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term in order to interact with these different clubs is the Summer Leadership Conference (in place of ICON due to COVID restrictions).
