Hi Key Club! October and the fall season has officially come to a close, meaning a new term, recognition contest deadlines, and more fun events are all coming soon! During fall, we managed to successfully moved most of our events in-person! However, with increased COVID cases as of January, we have moved all of our events online to minimize infection rates among our members while they help our community. A couple of my favorite events from the past two months have been the DCMs, the Waterdog Run (despite the 6am start!), and our weekly club meetings. Even as we provide numerous club service events to choose from, don’t forget about division events! I highly encourage you all to attend DCMs (Division Council Meetings) to make some new friends and do some service! I have combined events from September and October into this October issue due to its later release. Wtih the passing of George Kranen, a beloved Kiwanis advisor, the publication of this newsletter has been delayed with respect to him. May he rest in peace.

Sunbathing in Service,

Katarina Povinec Katarina Povinec Newsletter Editor 806450@seq.org

Hey Scots!

A M e s sage f r o m y o u r

We hope to see you at more events throughout November and December, as well as 2022! Due to finals season, our events in December will include more ongoing and online service projects to allow you to get all the service hours you need for the MRP. We’ll also be discussing the MRP, club elections, and division/district contests at upcoming club meetings.

President

I hope you all had a fantastic month of October! We had a total of 8 service opportunities and a bunch of fundraisers to go along with it. You might have joined us at the Belmont Water Dog Run or Second Harvest, plus many more! Thank you all who came to volunteer because you definitely made an impact on our community. You might have also spotted us selling boba at football games and the homecoming dance! Whatever you did to support Key Club this month, we appreciate you :)

Thank you again to all those that have participated in events this semester! II can’t wait to see all of you guys throughout this month and at other events. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or if you just wanna talk :)

Best,

Claire Tseng Claire Tseng President tsengclaire95@gmail.com

Palo Alto Moonlight Run Club Event - 6 attendees for 22.5 hr

Lucy Lopshire Junior The Palo Alto Moonlight Run was an exciting event where we got to encourage runners and provide them with water and Gatorade. It was amazing being able to provide the participants with support and resources so that they could finish off the race with high spirits. It was also fun volunteering with other members of Key Club and making new friends from other schools! I think the best part of this event was being able to cheer for the runners that were working hard, and the money they paid to run went to support nonprofits serving families in the Bay Area. Overall, the event was a great opportunity to be supportive, make new friends, and accumulate volunteer hours. I look forward to this event next year!

Jocelyn Owen Junior On Saturday, September 18, Carlmont Key Clubbers participated in the 37th annual coastal cleanup day at Twin Pines Park. Participants helped clean up the park by picking up trash and recyclables in the area. We picked up litter including used plastic wrappers, containers, straws, utensils, scraps of cardboard, tiny pieces of confetti from previous events, and more. We were also provided with a sheet of paper to track the different items that we picked up. I’m glad that we had the opportunity to spend a productive morning helping to clean up the environment and our community!

September DCM

5 attendees + 1 advisor for 7.5 hr Guillermo Mendoza Senior The September Dares DCM was a division-wide council meeting and social fundraiser hosted by El Camino. At the event, we were able to dare fellow Key Clubbers to do a wide variety of dares that varied in price. There were also DLT dares that we were able to help contribute to. This was one of my favorite events of the year as while I was able to dare my friends, I was also helping raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP)! I enjoyed interacting with Key Clubbers from other schools and seeing what dares their friends dared them to do. There was so much to do at the event and the hosts were also very kind. I would definitely attend future events like this and can’t wait to be a part of more division-wide events!

Maya Kornyeyeva Senior During the October DCM, the atmosphere was light and joyful. When all of the key clubbers arrived, we sat down on colorful blankets to listen to updates from the EAs, the LTG, and each of the clubs in our division. This included Galileo Key Club, who attended their first DCM. After the conclusion of the updates, the members split off into FRN Prep #3 activities like learning cheers, and a service portion consisting of rock painting. The service portion was entertaining as well as relaxing, and allowed members to meet people from different clubs and converse with several advisors and the DLT. The rocks dried quickly and included kind messages like “Be Happy” and “Enjoy your moment,” plus symbols like keys, hearts, and smiley faces. Overall, the event was enjoyable and provided members with a wide range of activities to choose from.

Second Harvest 12 attendees + 1 advisor for 30.5 hr

9

Soleil Dam Junior On October 5th, 11 Carlmont Key Club members (along with many others) joined Second Harvest of Silicon Valley to distribute food at Hoover Elementary School. Second Harvest is a food bank that is nationwide and they work to provide free food to anyone and everyone who needs a healthy meal. We had four different stations: dairy, produce, meat, and canned goods. Depending on how many families the car was picking up for, each station would put 2 to 8 boxes into each vehicle that came through the parking lot. All in all, I really enjoyed the event and it made me feel like I was making a big impact on the people in my community and making some people’s lives a bit easier.

Waterdog Run

Nate Anson Senior We got the Belmont Waterdog Run early at the Carlmont Shopping center at 6:30am on Saturday, October 9th. I was assigned to be a course monitor behind Lunardis. I liked how this event was in-person and how I was able to help out during a community event. Additionally, seeing the runners run by and their friendly faces while encouraging them was nice. Overall, I really liked the event, and even though it was early in the morning, I enjoyed it.

Goblin Walk

Swaraali Save Junior The Goblin Walk was a Halloweenthemed event where the businesses along Laurel Street in San Carlos passed out candy to trick-or-treaters and their parents. The volunteers handed out free candy collection bags to families participating in the walk. Each bag was black with an orange Goblin Walk 2021 logo on the front. All of the volunteers took a bundle of bags and spread out along the street to offer them to people passing by. We had 14 volunteers in total, so we were able to hand them all out faster than expected. The best part was seeing all the kids’ fun costumes as we walked through the crowd!

Online Club Meetings + Events Hey Key Clubbers! As of January 6th, 2022, we will be switching to online events + meetings! Throughout the fall months of October, November, and early December, we were able to host in-person club meetings due to relatively low COVID cases. However, as infection rates soar, we have collectively decided to move all events + meetings online.

Internship Update At Carlmont Key Club, we will be hosting an intership program before the next term begins in order to help YOU decide which position to run for! The program has been postponed until the month of January to line up with club elections.

h o mWEEK ecoming

Erica Tam Junior The first dance of the year, Monster Mash, was filled with energy and liveliness. Carlmont Key Club had the opportunity to sell boba to students who were dressed in festive costumes. We have a variety of milk tea boba and peach green tea. As the night progressed with dancing and singing along with popular songs, students were eager to get a cup of boba. It was thrilling to participate in such a high spirited event.

Emily Mao Senior On October 8th, Carlmont High School continued its boba fundraising tradition at the football game for the first time after the pandemic. The boba booth was settled behind the football gate entrance between 5-8:30pm. Two flavors were offered: black milk tea, and peach green tea. With the football cheers in the background, I promoted our boba along with two other members. The boba fundraiser provided a special experience for further involvement in our club and school. The boba also added on to the overall fun atmosphere of football games. In addition, Carlmont Key Club received a $399 net donation from this fundraiser. I like this fundraiser because it combines a fun event for entertainment with the intention of fundraising.

Octob er S OS P : UNICEF What is UNICEF? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF Trick or Treat for UNICEF is a two-month long event that was held in October and November in order to raise money for this social welfare organization. By asking for change instead of candy, participants could make a difference not just in their community, but all around the world. See trickortreatforunicef.org for more.

15

UNICEF is a United Nations Agency that aims to provide humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. Ask for change instead of candy this Halloween! Support Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF by distributing collection boxes to your club. Proceeds will go towards children in need all around the world. UNICEF is an organization that works in over 190 different countries and territories to protect children’s rights and their lives. It is one of the most widespread and recognizable social welfare organizations in the world and was originally founded in New York in 1946. In order to help UNICEF make an impact, volunteers were able to participate in the Trick or Treat for UNICEF event this October/ November. Thank you to everyone who raised money or donated through the online site. We appreciate your efforts to help protect the next generation.

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

Each district is made up of one or more states led by a Governor Cal-Nev-Ha District

Key Club Int’l encompasses all clubs within its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International. - Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be participate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc. - The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family. - District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii) - Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with: - 45,000 members - 780 Key Clubs - 77 divisions - 18 regions - Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term in order to interact with these different clubs is the Summer Leadership Conference (in place of ICON due to COVID restrictions).
