Hi Key Clubbers! I hope you all had a fantastic holiday season and are ready to continue your Key Club journey into the new year. The new term is coming soon! As for December, we had many ongoing events to help support you guys and your busy schedules during finals. In January, we aimed to have all in-person events, but unfortunately had to transition back online due to COVID spikes after winter break. Nevertheless, we have had a great amount of service events avaliable that vary from bookmark making to scarf knitting. Don’t be afraid to try something new! I hope you were able to expand your horizons while meeting your service hours for the MRP with both club and division events. After all, you won’t regret connecting with your Key Club family, even if it is online! Please enjoy this winter and holiday themed newsletter! Our December events were full of holiday cheer and made up the last few in-person events prior to 2022. Along with event recaps, you’ll also find December Member Recognition and an in-depth rundown of DCON--District Convention. The end of the term is coming soon!

A M e s sage f r o m y o u r

I have a few important announcements for this month. The first is the Member Recognition Program (MRP). As of January 31st, all service hours have been submitted, but thank you to all who participated and got involved! Be sure to check out Katarina’s guide as well for the next imporant events that are coming up! Also, thank you to all those who came to our end of semester celebration! A warm welcome to all the new members who joined us. If you haven’t gotten your t-shirt, membership card, or handbook, please reach out to me.

President

We made it through finals! Thank you to all those who participated in our December events. We had over 6 service events and I was so happy to see so many faces at the December DCM and the Holiday-a-Thon. Giving during the winter seasons is always the most rewarding, so I am so glad that so many of you guys were able to participate. The Night of Holiday Lights had almost over 65 of us helping our local community and I am proud to say that we were able to produce such high quality service.

As always, feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns!

Surfing the Waves of Service,

Claire Tseng Claire Tseng President tsengclaire95@gmail.com

Night of Holiday Lights 49 attendees for 98 hours

Guillermo Mendoza Senior Night of Holiday Lights was a service event where Key Clubbers operated different booths and activities for the city of San Carlos. The booths and activities were meant for a celebration of the holidays. The booths ranged from creating paper fortune tellers to snowflakes. The event was one of my favorite events of the year. The kids were lovely to interact with and the scene itself was beautiful. There was a band walking around playing Christmas music and there was fake snow falling out of the sky. The kids were very joyful to even just create such little crafts. I really enjoyed bonding with my fellow key club members as well and highly recommend this event to everyone who can participate in it in the future.

Sara Wilkinson Freshman The Night of Holiday Lights is when families and friends can go down to Laurel Street to enjoy live music, crafts, food, and much more. As a Key Club member, I volunteered at one of the craft booths to help kids make snowman ornaments. I really enjoyed seeing the kids having fun and being able to make something they can use for decoration. There were 2 sisters that had come to my booth and made my friend and I ornaments for our trees. It was really sweet and I hope I can do it again next year!

December DCM

10 attendees + 3 advisors for 20hr Camille Ching Freshman The December DCM at Aragon High School was a fun event I went to. We started out with the DCM and monthly awards. Then, we did a White Elephant and created origami soul boxes to honor victims of gun violence for the service portion. There was also a photo booth and food. I enjoyed creating soul boxes and being able to meet and spend time with people from many different schools!

7

Kaitlyn Kwan Senior The Holiday-a-Thon was a social and service event that included members from D34N and D34S. At the event, we listened to informational presentations about gift-giving, time and stress management, and keeping new year’s resolutions. Following the presentations, we had the choice of participating in multiple activities including ornament making, karaoke, and playing games. I really enjoyed making my own ornament and meeting Key Clubbers from other schools. Another segment of the event was community service where I decorated postal boxes to send to military members. Overall, this event was filled with lots of diverse and fun activities that kept me engaged.

8 attendees + 1 advisor for 16hr

HolidayGoodies for LifeMoves 12 attendees for 14hr Sydney O’Donnell Sophomore The Holiday Care Goodies for LifeMoves event was a small, simple after school event where we assembled gift bags. We divided candy into bags and then made handwritten little notes with phrases such as “Happy Holidays” and “Merry Christmas” to put into each gift bag along with the candy. It was a small group of people and we just sat at tables and talked while we worked. It was a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. I’m very glad that I attended.

9

Campus Cleanup 5 attendees for 7hr

Elizabeth Cruz Freshman The Carlmont Campus Cleanup event was in-person and gave me a chance to make a difference at my school! We went around campus for an hour and a half picking up trash we saw littered on the ground. We were given trash bags and gloves to roam around with and ended with multiple filled bags. I liked this event because it let me have a specific time to pick up trash instead of just picking a piece or two of trash whenever I see it on the ground. I picked up trash from places where people would never see them and found pieces I had never noticed before. Generally speaking, I enjoyed picking up trash with my friends and I hope we can do it again with bigger attendance.

Decemb e r S OS P : Providing Basic Needs What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Holiday Care Goodies for LifeMoves At this service event, volunteers helped package holiday care bags with hot chocolate, candy canes, cards, and paper snowflakes for the LifeMoves shelter. These care bags were delivered to the shelter and used to help the homeless enjoy the holidays.

15

What is Providing Basic Needs? Providing Basic Needs is the act of donating certain necessities (such as food, water, clothing, etc.) to communities that cannot afford these expenses. Spread the holiday cheer by providing your community with basic needs during the holiday season. Clothing or food drives are perfect service projects for this month. Let’s ensure that all people have the proper necessities to live. Especially during the holidays-also known as the” season of giving”--, it is crucial that we support our community and give them the gift of a safe and supported holiday. Use your resources in order to help others feel the magic of the holidays. This month, Carlmont Key Club hosted one of its last in-person service events of the 2021-22 term. AT Holiday Care Goodies for Life Moves, Carlmont Key club was able to provide basic needs for people in shelters near us.

Intro to Ke y C l ub S tr uc tur e

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

Each district is made up of one or more states led by a Governor Cal-Nev-Ha District

Key Club Int’l encompasses all clubs within its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International. - Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be participate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc. - The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family. - District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii) - Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with: - 45,000 members - 780 Key Clubs - 77 divisions - 18 regions - Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term in order to interact with these different clubs is the Summer Leadership Conference (in place of ICON due to COVID restrictions).
