Hi Key Club! Happy July! I hope you all have been having fun at all of our summer events and enjoying your break. I’m extremely grateful for all of the free time I’ve had lately to truly relax after a hectic school year. As summer hits its halfway point, I hope you all will continue to join us at our meetings and bring your friends with you! There are more ways than ever to get involved, including our member recruitment competitions, ongoing service events, division-wide fundraisers, and more. Check out page 12 to see how far along we are with our club goals, and what you can do to help us reach them all while meeting some of the new MRP requirements! The updated MRP rubric can also be found on the following page, and it’s a great resource to refer back to especially when planning out your term and all you want to achieve. We’re also hoping to transition back into in-person events and fundraisers when school resumes, both on the club and division level. The August DCM, for example, will be hosted by our club and be the first one in-person after more than a year of doing Key Club online! I look forward to meeting and seeing you all in-person rather than just through Zoom :)

A M e s sage f r o m y o u r Hey Scots!

In terms ofJuly, we are planning to host all Zoom events, so hopefully you all can join even with your summer schedules! If you guys have any friends or know any incoming freshmen, right now is the perfect time to introduce them to our Key Club family. Feel free to bring them to any service or social events we have so that they can get a taste of what we do! Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer and hope to see you guys at future events!

President

I can’t believe that we have made it through our first month of the summer! I hope you all are having a great time and savoring it like I am. June was filled with service and social events, as well as fundraisers. We started doing in-person events and it was so great to finally meet some of you guys. We also hosted the division wide River Rose event and made felt roses for the COVID-19 memorial.

Best,

Claire Tseng Claire Tseng President tsengclaire95@gmail.com

Letters to Orphans june interclub

Guillermo Mendoza Senior Letters to Orphans was a virtual service event, where Key Clubbers from Carlmont, San Mateo and Westmoor created notes of inspiration for orphanages. We were given the option to either write a digital note through Paper Bridges’ website or create and mail our own cards. I decided to go for a mixture of the two as I wanted to express some of my creativity in order to design a card that was both unique and joyful for the orphans. I went with a sunny scenery with flowers and grassy hills. I was very happy to be a part of the event as it feels amazing to have the opportunity to put a smile on the face of any orphan. The hosts of the event were also friendly and provided a peaceful environment to work in.

15 attendees for 41.75 hours Maia Cortes Freshman The Soul Boxes event was my first event and we made origami boxes. I was never into origami because I would always mess up, but this event was fun and easy for me. I ended up making 4 origami boxes and on my 3rd box I already memorized most of the steps. I was also glad that we didn’t have to go out and buy certain supplies and all we needed was paper and markers. For Key Club events, I would volunteer for ones that interest me and I loved how the boxes were bringing awareness to gun violence and represented “a life.” I will definitely be joining more events like this and I’m happy that I was a part of this experience.

June

14 attendees + 1 advisor Jocelyn Owen Junior On Saturday, June 19, key clubbers across Region 17 attended the Key Club Training Conference. The theme of KCTC this year was Studio GhiBEE with the event revolving around the Studio Ghibli films. There was a schedule of activities planned including officer workshops, round robin workshops, and a guest speaker. The Studio Ghibli theme was incorporated in every aspect of the conference with the characters, music, and stories which was really creative and made it a great experience. The workshops were very informative and the LTGs did a great job of running the event and building up excitement. The June DCM also took place during KCTC and included updates on the clubs and division, recognition, past and upcoming events, as well as the raffle drawing for the Eliminate fundraiser. Overall, I felt that I got a lot out of KCTC and it was an amazing experience!

DCM

Erica Tam Junior This year’s KCTC was filled with fun and exciting adventures. Region 17’s lieutenant governors took us through the world of Studio Ghibli. We were able to attend different workshops to further our knowledge in leadership positions in Key Club and advice to help our clubs progress. We also had the treat of hearing a presentation from Evan Low, a former Key Club member and Assemblymember in the California State Assembly. The lieutenant governors created an amazing and engaging experience. After KCTC, our division reconvened for our DCM, where Courtney updated us on upcoming events and more. This day was filled with excitement, laughs, and great memories.

In-person Park Cleanup 8 attendees for 11.5 hrs

9

Ashwika Narayan Freshman The park cleanup was not only a fun way to take care of the community, but also an opportunity to protect the animals of the area. During the cleanup, we passed through the back of the trail leading from Mariners park. We spotted numerous animals such as geese and squirrels, alongside a great deal of trash littered around the fencing separating the wildlife from the marketplace. The litter ranged from receipts and wrappings to tennis balls and cardboard boxes, all of which could potentially be injurious to the surrounding animals. Fortunately, we were able to clear most of the garbage on the wildlife side of the fence, filling two large trash bags as a result!

Maya Kornyeyeva Senior I really enjoyed the River Rose Memorial service event because of how interactive it was, and because it was a welcome change from the previous online service events, which consisted mostly of letter writing and card making. In addition, I think the idea behind the service event - to create felt flowers to honor the lives lost to COVID-19- is something that is very impactful in our current situation with the pandemic. It felt incredibly good to know that the roses I made would contribute to something larger than myself: a monument in Washington D.C. that can be visited by thousands of people. The drop off and pick up process for the Kiwanis sponsored materials was also very well coordinated, and the zoom event itself went very smoothly. Overall, it was a simple and fun hands-on service event!

How can you help? - Use the Post Zoom Hours Room: Even if you don’t have time to attend events that we offer, come to our Post Zoom Hours Room! We work on projects that were featured in different service events throughout the month, and it’s a great way to earn service while interacting with others. - Invite your friends: In order to have the chance of winning either of the two member recruitment competitions, invite your friends to join as many service events and club meetings as possible! These events can be on any level - club, division, region, district, or international. - Pay your dues: To be a registered member of Key Club, your dues have to be paid. That way, you are protected under the Key Club Member Insurance at all Key Club events, and are able to participate in contests such as the MRP! Your dues also help fund our club. - Participate in fundraisers: A lot of the time, fundraisers are attached to raffles or some sort of reward system. Not only are you donating to a great cause (i.e. the Pediatric Trauma Program), but you can also get some Key Club merchandise, a gift card, or a snack!

New MRP Rubric

m rp n e w MRP t h e NEW THE

13

You may be wondering what’s changed with the new MRP, as the rubric looks quite similar to the previous one. However, if you’re aiming for Platinum or Gold MRP awards this term, look closely at the service hour requirement: - Gold MRP: 125 hr -> 150 service hr - Platinum MRP: 175 hr -> 200 service hr As the district recommends, it’s also important to keep track of your progress in all of the categories! Here are their tips: - Attend your division’s DCM and at least one division-wide service event this month. Repeat two more times and you will max out this category! - Take candid photos at events and write a 50-100 word article to submit to your club editor. Repeat once more to max it out!

J u l y SOSP:

BEE Clean

What is BEE Clean? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Infographics for Pollution Our club is hosting an Infographics for Pollution event to fulfill the BEE Clean SOSP. On July 21st, we will be making infographics to inform our community of the consequences of pollution and the steps we can take to make our planet a better place. Contact Claire Tseng for more info!

15

BEEing Clean is the practice of keeping oneself or one’s surroundings clean. With school out and summer in session, remember to give back to your community by keeping the environment clean and healthy! There are a variety of ways to promote the cleanliness of the environment such as a picking up litter in a local park or recycling goods. With climate change now taking effect in our community, it’s the perfect time to take care in making sure we reduce our carbon footprint. Simple daily changes such as using public transportation more often, utliizing compost and recycling bins, and participating in large scale events such as ocean cleanups and informational rallies can all help us BEE clean. This July, look out for Carlmont Key Club’s Infographics for Pollution event. These infographics are important to inform others of how they can help preserve our planet from harmful elements.

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

Each district is made up of one or more states led by a Governor Cal-Nev-Ha District

Key Club Int’l encompasses all clubs within its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International. - Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be participate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc. - The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family. - District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii) - Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with: - 45,000 members - 780 Key Clubs - 77 divisions - 18 regions - Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term in order to interact with these different clubs is the Summer Leadership Conference (in place of ICON due to COVID restrictions).
