PTP Bracelet Fundraiser $100 raised

Thank you for Donating Lina Saleh - Freshman

Friday, November 13th

During this event on 11/13, hosted by Erica Tam and Sanjna Sood, Key Club members got together to participate in a service tournament. In this event, we played Freerice by UNWFP (World Food Programme) and UNICEF’s Math for Good. During this event, we were divided into three teams where in which we worked to earn the most points for our team. The prize? Each person on the winning team was to receive one extra raffle ticket, as well as the overall top three contenders. We started the event by playing Skribblio, which definitely helped us build camaraderie within our team. Our team came in last, but the experience was wonderful nonetheless. This event had it all; stablishing an attitude of good sportsmanship, team camaraderie, and doing service hours, all at once.

D34N Keysgiving

At the November DCM, Key Clubbers from 14 schools came together over Zoom to celebrate Thanksgiving, but in Key Club style: Keysgiving. During this event, not only were general updates regarding past and future events given, but over 20 past Key Club alumni shared their individual stories, college tips, and advice. Key Clubbers got to connect personally with these speakers in Zoom breakout rooms and at the same time met other students from different schools. Students also had the opportunity to express their gratitude to a friend by writing a short note in the Love Box via a Google Form, and throughout the event, notes from this Love Box were read out. For me, it was so inspiring to hear these notes and I also learned so much from all of the alumni’s experiences! I am so grateful to be a part of this wonderful Key Club family and thought that this was overall an amazing event. I really enjoyed the warm and friendly Thanksgiving atmosphere that we were still able to create even though we were meeting virtually!

D34N D34N Cranes Cranes for for World World Peace Peace Saturday, November 14th

On November 14, El Camino Key Club from Division 34 North hosted an interclub service event called Cranes for World Peace. Participants folded paper cranes to send to the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to the disarmament of nuclear weapons for a safer world without the threat of nuclear annihilation. Since cranes serve as a symbol of peace, eternal youth, and happiness, the purpose of sending them to this organization was to spread positivity. Key Clubbers learned that every August, the month that atomic bombs were dropped in Japan (during World War 2), the Sadako Peace Garden is decorated with thousands of cranes. For me, it was a great experience and a way for me to revisit my hobby of folding origami when I was younger. Not only was the inter-club event a great opportunity to spread peace and positivity, it also gave members a chance to socialize with other people from different schools!

Amisha Nambiar - Junior The Charity Miles event allowed Key Clubbers to raise money for a charity of their choice based on how much time they spent exercising. During quarantine this event motivated me to get out of the house more. I chose the charity “Habitat for Humanity and synced the Charity Miles app up with my health app so I could count the miles I walked everyday. Before this event I was not leaving the house too often as I felt too consumed in my schoolwork. After syncing my apps, I decided to go for a short walk to get myself started. It turned into a habit of leaving the house for fifteen to twenty minutes everyday and walking around my city. While raising money for my chosen charity, I was also getting exercise and clearing my mind. Overall, I think this was one of my favorite ongoing Key Club events since I could do it on my own time and mentally and physically benefitted while doing service work.

Xavier Lem - sophomore On November 18, Key Club hosted a service event for Chico Bag’s Pay It Forward program, which advocates for the repurposing and recycling of reusable bags. Key Clubbers followed a video tutorial to make DIY bags out of T-shirts, which were then donated to low-income families or recycled into new products. Because plastics can take over 1,000 years to decompose, it is vital that we do our part to make use of sustainable products. However, if neglected, even reusable items can become pollutants, ending up in landfills or the environment. Thus, the repurposing of unused T-shirts is an ideal way to both reduce the amount of plastic entering the environment, as well as recycle products that are no longer useful in their current state. The event was enjoyable, and I was glad to be putting my unused T-shirts to good use.

No Sew T-Shirt Bag Service Event Wednesday, November 18th

23 volunteers 19.51 hours

Isabel Wright - sophomore Last Wednesday, I participated in a Key Club event where we DIY’d t-shirts into reusable bags that we donated. We followed along to a nosew bag tutorial on youtube. We started by cutting off the sleeves and part of the neckline of the t-shirt. We then flipped the shirt inside out and cut lines along the bottom of the shirt. Lastly, we tied where we made the shirt cuts and flipped the shirt back to the front. I was surprised how simple this process was and how it turned out so well without using a sewing machine. My shirt bags look very tactile and useable. I’m very interested in sustainable fashion, so this project piqued my interest. I had lots of fun at this service event.

D e ce m b er SOSP : Providing Basic Needs What is Providing Basic Needs? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Operation Care and Comfort Carlmont Key Club is holding a donation drive for the organization Operation: Care and comfort. We are going to be collecting items such as hygiene products, food and clothing and dropping them off in the Carlmont Key club box in the scots gym. Contact Lauren McCarthy for more information!

15

Providing basic needs is dedicated towards donating necessities to people in need. Spread the holiday cheer by providing your community with basic needs during this holiday season. Clothing or food drives are perfect service projects for this month. Let’s ensure that all people have the proper necessities to live. Traditional lists of basic needs are composed of minimum requirements for the private consumption of items such as food, water and shelter. Basic needs (BN) are generally defined in terms of a minimal list of elements that human beings necessitate, in order to fulfill basic requirements and achieve a decent life. They are the basis for concepts like family, wealth, health and, at times, governments. In response, Carlmont Key Club has started a donation drive in honor of this month’s SOSP. Help us reach our goal to provide for the needy in our community.
