Hey Key Clubbers! I hope everyone had a great winter break. I know this holiday season was extremely different from others but hopefully everyone had a great time spending time with family and relaxing at home. We’re halfway through the school year (yay!) and before you know it summer will be here :D For our second club meeting of 2021, we will be celebrating the end of our first semester and recognizing you guys for all your hard work this year. Definitely mark this event on your calendars and I hope to see everyone there! With the new year coming, we also have lots of events in store so definitely check out the newsletter’s calendar for all our upcoming events. And lastly, I’d like to give a huge thank you to all of you for such an amazing year. Although it has definitely been difficult adjusting to life online, you guys have made Zoom meetings so much more meaningful with your dedication to service and Key Club. I’m looking forward to the rest of this term with you guys and I hope to see you at one of our future events!
Thank you and have an amazing 2021,

Warm-Up America was a fun and relaxing event that I enjoyed greatly. The service event followed the weekly Wednesday key club meeting and consists of hand knitting scarves to donate to the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City. The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City was created by a foundation called “Warm Up America where their job is to provide scarves, hats, and blankets for people in order to keep them warm. We focused on scarves for this service event. During the event, members learned how to hand-knit scarves and the pattern being taught was pretty simple. While knitting the scarves, I found myself having a lot of fun just seeing what the scarf would look like. I would definitely do it again since it is so easy and knowing that my scarf would be helping someone in need was reason enough to keep knittin all the event was very rewarding since I got to learn a new skill and use it to help others! Maya Kornyeyeva - Junior
This event was extremely relaxing to do, and the completion of it went right as schedule half a roll of yarn to make two 5-foot long finger-knitted scarves, and attached them to single strand of yarn woven through intermittent loops. This was definitely a new experie cause I had never finger-knitted before, but I found the instructions simple to follow and fun to compare scarf lengths and colors in breakout rooms, and I absolutely loved the m of lofi and pop). In the end, I was able to drive my scarf up to our club dropbox, and I h need of a little extra warmth this winter season.

ACC Reassurance Calls Ongoing Event Claire Bing - Junior

For the ACC Reassurance Calls project, participants were calling senior citizens that are a part of the San Carlos Adult Community Center to check how they were doing and to tell them about the new programs that the community center is offering: free online zoom classes and a free curbside lunch program. Each volunteer started with 32 calls, though they could always call more, and used a script to make sure they covered all of the information they needed to give to the seniors. These calls were very important because many of the seniors who used to attend the community center are now isolated because of the coronavirus and aren’t getting the interaction and assistance that they used to. Many of the seniors that I talked to were just happy that there were people who cared enough to call them, and one woman even said that I made her day! It felt nice to reach out to others and show them that there were people who cared about them.

Jocelyn Owen - Sophomore Throughout the month of December, participants of the Operation Care and Comfort donation drive gathered food, hygiene products, and clothing, along with creating handmade cards that would be included in care packages for deployed U.S. troops. I collected items around my house which included toothbrushes, floss, cans of pringles, and packages of cup noodles. It’s great to be able to donate some of the extra products at home to contribute to creating these care packages. Additionally, I wrote a few cards of encouragement to bring some positivity to the soldiers. After, I dropped off everything at Carlmont’s scots gym. I’m happy that these items and cards will go to benefit soldiers and brighten their day! Mandy Mah - Freshman Operation Care and Comfort is a program that allows people to donate essential items and food to US veterans and those who serve the country. Donations such as candy, toothbrushes, and puzzle books are accepted. Scavenging through the house for items such as travel-sized hygienic products, individually packaged food, and playing cards made many Key Clubbers more productive, all while adding to the pile of donations for Operation Care and Comfort. Although the drop-off box for donations under the table was a little hard to locate, I was happy to see donations overflowing when dropping off a bag of travel-sized toiletries. Overall, Operation Care and Comfort was an excellent opportunity to give back.

Katarina Povinec - Freshman The D34 December DCM was a Charlie Brown themed holiday event that members from both divisions could attend, which made it a great opportunity to meet others interested in Key Club and attend various activities with them. During this event, there were several workshops that attendees could choose from: Gift Giving 101, Maximizing Your Online Key Club Experience, and Member Recognition and Retention. I found that the two I attended were extremely informative and well structured, with slideshows that were not overcrowded with information and presenters that were constantly engaged and eager to teach others. Additionally, the main service event that earned members a half hour of service was the Macy’s and Make-a-Wish Letters to Santa. I really enjoyed this service event since the online e-cards were very customizable and made me nostalgic for the holidays of my childhood when I would write a letter to Santa every year and mail it through Macy’s Mailbox to the North Pole. All in all, I found this year’s December DCM to be a cheerful and festive experience that brightened up my day and got me into the holiday spirit with its many joyous activities and the kind people that attended the event.

Georgie Rauls - Freshman Holiday Card Making x Scarf Knitting was a cheerful, festive division wide service event hosted by Jefferson and Carlmont. Decorating cards with holiday and winter illustrations and writing cheerful messages in the cards was enjoyable. It was nice to know that seniors at the Reunion Court of Kingwood and the Grace Care Center of Cypress would receive my cards and perhaps smile at the wintry illustration and the holiday wishes. After the Holiday Card Making segment of the event, we finger-knitted colorful scarves for Warm Up America’s Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City project. We listened to joyful holiday music throughout the event, and I appreciated the opportunity to volunteer on my first day of winter break! :D

J a nu ary SOSP: Community Outreach What is community outreach? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.
Second Harvest of Silicon Valley Carlmont Key Club has volunteered at the second harvest food bank for the past few years. When the pandemic hit, they were in desperate need of volunteers to help sort and distribute food. Today, the number of unemployed continues to rise. Email Sanjna Sood for volunteer opportunities and be on the look out for updates.

The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are a non-profit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals, medical research, and community awareness of children’s health issues. More than 10 million kids enter a children’s hospital like UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals across North America every year. To provide the best care for kids, children’s hospitals rely on donations and community support, as Medicaid and insurance programs do not fully cover the cost of care. Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has helped fill those funding gaps by raising more than $7 billion, most of it $1 at a time through Miracle Balloon icon campaigns. Its various fundraising partners and programs support the nonprofit’s mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.
