Hey Key Clubbers!

1

It’s crazy that it’s already May and the school year is almost over. I hope you all are managing to stay motivated as the semester wraps up, and I wish you the best of luck on your AP tests and finals! Carlmont Key Club hosted a total of 3 service events in April with many attendees present at divison events as well. A personal favorite of mine was the Origami Bears for CR, which was my first time hosting an event! I thank you all for your avid participation and I hope that we can bring the same into May. We have many fun events planned along with ongoing fundraisers that you can do in your spare time as you study and do your best during exam season. This was my first newsletter completely made on my own, and I am incredibly happy with how it came out. I hope you all find the new spreads and resources of use to you, and that you are able to spot some of your own articles and visuals in use. Flip through to find our May Member Recognition, DCON 2021 Recap, a tutorial on how to plan for the MRP this term, and more! See you in the next one :)

All the best,

Katarina Povinec Katarina Povinec Newsletter Editor 806450@seq.org

What’s up Scots!

We have a lot in store for you all this month! We are preparing to host our first division-wide service event of the new term where we will be creating felt roses for victims of COVID, along with 4 other service opportunities, an Eliminate raffle fundraiser, two social events, and more! Our club meetings are now on Thursdays during lunch (11:!511:45)! Every week we will have a different theme, so be on the lookout for guest speakers, member recognition, and game days.

President

I can’t believe that the first month of the new term has already come to an end. You guys are phenomenal and thank you for all for being patient with us as we settle into our new committees. We started the term off strong at the annual District Convention (DCON). April was then filled with many different types of service events hosted by our new committees and I even saw many of you at our April Division Council Meeting (DCM).

I am super excited to get to know more of you guys as the term goes on. For now, rest up everyone, and take things one step at a time for finals and AP testing. I believe in you!

Surfing the Waves of Service,

Claire Tseng Claire Tseng President tsengclaire95@gmail.com

E-Cards for UCSF division wide service event

Lisa Nguyen Senior Hosted by Abraham Lincoln, creating UCSF virtual cards was our last service event of our term! It has been a wonderful ride attending all these virtual events & for this event particularly, we were placed in breakout rooms when creating these cards. These virtual cards were compiled in one big slide deck created by Lincoln’s board. The cards were created to express gratitude for all the essential healthcare workers for all their work this past year! It was a lovely event to attend & I truly enjoyed my time in the breakout rooms listening to people talking while I created cards.

Bookmarks for Younique Foundation 13 attendees for 28.5 hours Lina Saleh Freshman On Monday, April 12, Aragon, Carlmont, and Hillsdale hosted a bookmark-making interclub for the Younique Foundation. The Younique Foundation helps women who were victims of sexual abuse with recovery by providing healing services, support groups, and educational retreats. Attendees decorated bookmarks from a provided template, and the resulting products will be used in the notebooks the women in the program receive upon their first day of the educational retreat. My personal favorite part about this event was the Dicebreakeran icebreaker, but there was an activity for each number on the dice. I thought it was a really cool way to get to know the other members and attendees.

Emily Mao Junior On Saturday April 17th, I got the opportunity to attend the first DCM of the term and meet our new Division 34 North Lieutenant Governor Courtney Tai. The attendees were able to learn about club updates throughout our division, share our experiences for past events, and learn about upcoming events and opportunities. It was so exciting to see other clubs in our division and feel connected as a community. After the DCM portion, we then transitioned into our service project: cards for Dominican Hospital. These cards were messages of gratitude and thanks to the workers in Dominican Hospital and would later be displayed in their faculty room. Overall, the April DCM was a fun and unique experience that members from every club could enjoy and attend.

14 attendees for 19 hrs (service event portion)

DCM DCM + service event

Swaraali Save Sophomore This was the first Division Council Meeting of the term as well as a service event. The meeting started off with the new leadership of each school describing the latest accomplishments and events of their clubs. Then, recognition for banana points, overall participation, member of the month, and more was announced. It was interesting to see what each club has been up to this month. After the DCM wrapped up, we moved on to the service event, which was making cards for the workers at Dominican Hospital. Creating the cards was lots of fun, since we had the freedom to decorate and make them as creative and colorful as we wanted. It was also nice knowing that the cards were for a great cause, as healthcare workers are essential to our community and are probably some of the people who most need support in these times. After the cards were done, we took a quick group picture with everyone’s creations, and that was the end of the event. Both the DCM and the service event went very well overall!

Writing Notes to Firefighters Aaryan Ravi Junior Writing Notes to Firefighters was an interactive and spirited charity event run by Ethan Moussa. Students got the opportunity to express their appreciation for the Santa Cruz Fire Department through decorative cards that they worked on. Markers, colored pencils, and other materials were used to make the cards look as nice as possible. I had a great time as I spent time talking to friends while we worked on our cards in Zoom breakout rooms. I would recommend this event for all as it is a constructive way to spend a few hours after school on an asynchronous day, and I would most definitely consider doing this event again.

19 attendees for 39 hrs

Origami Bears for CR Foundation club service event

23 attendees for 46 hours Claire Bing Junior The Origami Bears Key Club event was a fun challenge. For the service project, we made origami bears and donated them to the Child Rescue foundation for children who are survivors of domestic violence. After the introduction, we followed along as Katarina, one of the organizers of the event, gave us a tutorial on how to make the bears. We then listened to music and made bears together for the rest of the time available. The bears were a little tough to get the hang of making, but that just made this event a great challenge and kept the event interesting and engaging the entire time. This project was a cute and unique activity, and it was great to know that the bears went to a great cause!

MRP Rubric

m r p 1 0 1 Setting a Game Plan MRP 101:

How should you prepare?

15

1. Set a reasonable goal - choose the MRP category you think is most achieveable to you, and stay committed! 2. Pick your categories - at the top of the rubric, it states how many categories you need to complete out of 9 or 13 to receive the award. Plan which ones you will complete! 3. Use our Post Zoom Hours Form - this is the easiest way to gain more service hours even after events. 4. Participate in events outside of our club - attending division, district, and international events has never been so convenient! 5. Reach out to our board - ask for help when needed! Our board is here to serve you and update you on your progress.

May SOSP: The Eliminate Project What is The Eliminate Project? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

May Eliminate Raffle Fundraiser Carlmont Key Club is hosting an Eliminate Raffle Fundraiser all throughout May and until June 19th using a donation link (TBD)! This event is a raffle for club members to participate in for a chance to win a $15 Amazon gift card per $100 rasised towards the Elimante project. Donations are $2/ticket.

17

The Eliminate Project is a campaign created by UNICEF to protect the lives of babies and mothers all around the globe from Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). As the CNH District gets closer to reaching our goal of $500,000 in donations to The Eliminate Project, your dedication is as vital as ever! Participate in the Eliminate campaign against MNT. Also start planning for Eliminate Week! Kiwanis International joined the fight against MNT by partnering with UNICEF in 2010. We have been able to raise enough money to eliminate MNT from 27 countries, and provide life-saving vaccines, health education, safe birthing environements, and more for mothers and babies in vulnerable environments. Throughout the month of May, Carlmont Key Club has prepared an Eliminate Raffle Fundraiser for this month’s SOSP. Join the fight against MNT by donating and working to fund efforts of protecting the world from this deadly infection.

Intro to Ke y C l ub S tr uc tur e

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

Each district is made up of one or more states led by a Governor Cal-Nev-Ha District

Key Club Int’l encompasses all clubs within its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International. - Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be participate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc. - The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family. - District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii) - Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with: - 45,000 members - 780 Key Clubs - 77 divisions - 18 regions - Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term in order to interact with these different clubs is the Summer Leadership Conference (in place of ICON due to COVID restrictions).
