A Message from yo ur

Newsletter Editor Hello Everyone! October had flown by so fast! I can’t believe that Thanksgiving is already amoung us. This past month was filled with many service opportunities, social events, and fundraisers! It was truly amazing to see many returning members, as well as many new faces. Our club is growing so fast and the number of hours we serve per month is only increasing! I am so excited to continue on this journey with y’all as November brings many new and improved events with us. This month we have two club meetings and NINE service events for you to take part in. I really hope to see you all there! Don’t be afraid to reach out to any of the board with questions, comments, or concerns. We are always actively trying to improve our club and your experience. At the end of the day, November is the month to give thanks and I am incredibly thankful for all of you! Don’t forget to contact a key clubber, leader, friend, and your family to show your appreciation for them this month :) Without further ado, enjoy the November newsletter!

Best,

Claire Tseng

A M e s sage f r o m y o u r

President Heyo Carlmont Key Clubbers! I hope everyone’s been doing amazing and have adjusted well to virtual learning. I can’t believe it’s fall already! Just hang tight and the season of holidays and festivities (and more importantly breaks) is right around the corner. Thank you so much for taking your time to volunteer and getting to know us this month! I had a blast seeing all your faces at events and club meetings. Also, don’t forget to turn in your club applications and dues!! Make sure to get those in asap and feel free to drag your friends to key club events and have them turn in applications too ;) I know school, key club and life in general are all incredibly different right now due to the pandemic, so thank you guys again for joining us and being so flexible with your time, we really appreciate it! Stay safe and healthy and don’t forget to check out our upcoming events at the end of the newsletter :)

Best,

Ashley Zheng

Paper Bridges Social Service Event

TOTAL

By Lauren McCarthy Sophomore Our meeting consisted of a social event and a service event where we first played a fun and friendly round of Kahoot based on Carlmont Key Club. It was especially helpful for the newer members who are just learning about what Key Club is for the first time. For our service project, we wrote letters to orphans as part of the Papers Bridges organization and then mailed the letters out after. In the letters, we wrote to the orphans about ourselves and overall made them feel important and loved! I added some pictures to try and make my card more colorful and uplifting. Overall my favorite part of the event was getting a chance to write to a kid and try to make their day a bit better.

Letters of Love Service Event

By Marrisa Chow Sophomore On October 21st, during a club meeting, Key Club hosted guest speaker Mayor Warren Lieberman of Belmont, who gave pointers on how to be involved in local government and the city council. The Letters of Love service event followed after. This event was designed to combat the isolation that seniors might be feeling due to the effects of COVID-19. After writing and decorating cards, they are sent off to elders in senior communities. I feel like the importance of this event cannot be stressed enough: we should check in on elders, especially in these unprecedented times. Be sure to keep in touch with your grandparents or other important elders in your life.

D34N D34N Patch Patch Project Project

9

By Alice Finkelstein Sophomore During the District 34 North’s Patch Service Project event, members from the Key Clubs of 14 schools gathered together virtually. Hosted by the Carlmont Key Club, over 75 students made heart patches while bonding in Zoom breakout rooms. The patches were made by sewing a heart cut out from fabric onto another piece of fabric and were then mailed to Enchanted Makeovers, an organization that makes dress-up costumes for kids to play with in homeless shelters. Each costume comes with one of the patches, and then the mother will write her child’s name inside the heart. Unlike most things in homeless shelters which are shared, these patches are something that children can truly call their own. The members making the patches enjoyed getting to know new people outside of their schools - even amid the pandemic - and had a great time sewing, knowing that somewhere, children would be filled with joy to receive a special patch made just for them!

D34N D34N Together Together We We Rise Rise

By Katarina Povinec Freshman Together We Rise was a fun and interactive service event hosted by Aragon that I thoroughly enjoyed participating in. On this Saturday afternoon, all of the participants made different types of cards with uplifting and positive messages to accompany care packages for foster children. I have attended various card making service events in the past, but this particular event was one of my favorites due to the spirited atmosphere and the kindness of everyone who attended. It feels great to know that just by spending a few minutes and making a simple card, you could make someone’s day so much brighter and give them hope for the future. Overall, I would definitely participate in another event like this in the future and I think that it is a great and fulfilling way to earn service hours even if you are not very artistic but would still like to help the community.

Lisa Nguyen Senior Lowell Game for gains was a fun division wide service project event! I got to see so many new faces around the room & the chat was lively throughout the entire event. We solved UNICEF Math Equations which really polished up my math skills! Each question I answered right gave $0.25 to UNICEF. Since October’s SOSP was Unicef, this event fit right in. During the second half of the event, we played Free Rice where we answered trivia questions in the categories we chose ourselves. It was a fun Saturday event & a relaxing way to spend my afternoons with Key Clubbers.

D34N Breast Cancer Awareness

I attended the Breast Cancer Awareness Event, where we were taught lots of interesting facts about breast cancer, then got to paint and decorate pumpkins and wrote letters to breast cancer patients. I worked on the letters during the event, which was really fun to do because I had never written letters like these before. Cancer is always something that’s hard to deal with, so to help someone while they’re struggling with the illness means a lot to me because I know it’s difficult for them. Since COVID has taken over our lives, I’ve had lots of free time that I want to spend by helping people. It’s my first year with Key Club, and I’m already very happy with it. Even though I’m a new member, I’m already having lots of fun at the events, and more importantly, volunteering my time to help people!

N o v e m b er SO SP : Kiwanis Family What is the Kiwanis Family? What does SOSP stand for? SOSP stands for Spotlight on service program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF The club has signed up again to participate in the fundraiser for The Eliminate Project (alias MNT), a partnership project between Kiwanis/ Key Club and UNICEF to eradicate MNT from the underserved countries. Details will be communicated in an upcoming email from the Fundraiser Committee Chair, Iain Weissburg.

15

Kiwanis Family House is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing temporary housing for families of seriously ill or injured patients being treated at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento or at Shriners Hospital. Patients and their families often travel long distances to receive treatment at the UC Davis Medical Center and Shriners Hospital. Finding low-cost lodging near the hospital can be important to these families, especially if the patient has a life-threatening injury or illness and if the treatment period lasts for an extended period of time . The Kiwanis Family House, located on UC Davis Medical Center grounds, offers inexpensive family accommodations – with individual bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens, bathrooms, food and clothes closets, laundry and hook-ups for recreational vehicles.
