Fitur 2016: Costa Blanca, aims to become the "European Capital of Cycling" Last weekend the President of the Provincial Government fronted the Costa Blanca Tourist Board presentation at Fitur and put forward the region as the focal point for cycling. This year two of the final stages of the Tour of Spain: La Vuelta, will be run this summer by various municipalities in Alicante. Provincial Government President Cesar Sanchez, announced from Fitur that it's the intention of the Government of Alicante to promote the Costa Blanca as the European Capital of Cycling. To this end the Board is developing a plan of signalling regarding the provincial road network to indicate to motorists to watch out for riders by these routes.

The head of the council recalled that "the province has more than a thousand kilometres of road of which the management and conservation depends directly on the institution. Our intention is to educate and warn users that circulate by these roads that they must respect the rules of the road to ensure the safety of cyclists."

Sanchez gave the details of this proposal during a presentation at the International Tourism Fair of FITUR. The event also featured the participation of the director of the race, Javier Guillen, the deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolon, Brigadier General of the Air Force, Francisco Alemirch and mayors of the municipalities through which will pass the peloton. The Spanish race will compete in the region on Friday, 9th September,

with a team time trial that will run between Javea and Calpe. The Poble Nou de Benitachell, Teulada-Moraira and Benissa are other scenarios that will be used on the nineteenth day of basically coastal riding along 39 kilometres.

A day later, on Saturday, September 10th, cyclists will face a tough mountain stage that will pass through the interior of the province. Benidorm is the starting point of this sporting stage, which will also will pass through the towns of La Nucia, Polop, Bolulla, Tàrbena, Parcent, Orba, Tormos, Sagra, Tollos, Benimassot, Goga, Millena, Benillup, Benimarfull, Alcoy, L'Alqueria d'Asnar, Cocentaina, Alcoy, Benilloba, Alcoleja, Relleu and Sella.

In total 184 kilometres including four mountain passes, along with a final ascent to the Sierra de Aitana, at 1,510 meters in altitude.

The president has insisted that "our will is to keep our

relationship with the organizers of the Tour of Spain for years, since it is an international sports event that allows us to spread the tourist wealth of the province to more than 190 countries, to virtually everyone." Tour Director Javier Guillen noted that in this 71st edition, the Tour will increase the time of television broadcasting, from two hours to at least three each day.

Staying on the sports theme, the exclusive product of XPERT-EVENTS, was also presented. They will also be offering their traditional sports such as basketball, paddle tennis, football and body combat that will be practiced in the excellent facilities of the sports city of Torrevieja.

XPERT-EVENTS has the support of the Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja to develop all of the nautical activities, who this year are currently celebrating their 50th anniversary.

Torrevieja's National Drag Queens It may have been a cold and miserable night, compounded by last minute problems and issues but for the audience, the

five Drag acts competing for the VIII National Drag Queen Contest, puts lots of smiles on gloomy faces. This year's queen

of queens is “Drag Sirio”, Reina Drag Queen del Carnival de Torrevieja 2016 with "Isterika confused" and "Violette Carson" being second and third.

Due to the issues surrounding the closure of the Municipal Theatre by the pentapartito government, a makeshift, temporary marquee

became the event's home for the night, located in the iconic Eras de la Sal, better known as the summer time home for the annual Habaneras Festival. With the tent full as usual, the VIII National Contest of Drag Queen, marked the major opening festivity for the start of Carnival 2016. The show was hosted by

Lady G and Empire with Five contestants vying for the title, with two dropping out of the show for various reasons.

The audience cheered, whooped and clapped as each contestant took to the stage, looking splendid, if cold, in their pumps and fabulous outfits. This Continued on page 2

Open Day at the Municipal Animal Shelter On Sunday morning and between 11.00am and 2.00pm, Torrevieja's Municipal Animal Shelter help an open day. In the course of that short space of time, there were many people who went to the site, to see how it has improved since Carmen Morate took over as Councillor in charge of Animal Welfare.

Visitors could see for themselves the improvements in the lifestyle and condition of the rescued animals, meet with their keepers and check that everything was conducive, in place and necessary for their welfare.

Information tables were in place and details about adopting animals and trying to obtain the financial support necessary was all in place. Animal

Protection Councilwoman, Carmen Morate, was satisfied with the turnout on the day and discussed her willingness to organise more such events in the future.

Back in August Torrevieja’s Municipal pound, the dog kennels and cattery, held their first open day. Not only was the focus of the Open Day in looking for some new homes for some of the 50 abandoned dogs or the dozens of cats and kittens, but also to sign up some new volunteers, to help with walking the dogs, cleaning out kennels and the cattery and even providing foster homes for some of the animals.

Carmen noted that the previous government team were indifferent to the needs of the animals and thus the three full time staff did their best to offer limited opening hours, to control the centre and make the animals as comfortable as possible. She says the Government has a larger budget for the kennels for 2016 and they hope to move to new premises, to make the kennels more

Torrevieja's National Drag Queens From page 1 is not a Danny La Rue style of show but instead a tongue in cheek Drag show, full of outrageously high and dangerously looking platform boots, a mix of skimpy and creative outfits and dancers in drag, complete with full beards and hairy chests. It's a just a fun show that was fully appreciated by the audience, although a couple of first time visitors from local political parties, looked slightly uncomfortable and out of place at times, as this was possibly their first time ever at such an occasion.

The jury proclaimed this year's "Drag Queen" of Torrevieja Carnival 2016 as "Drag Sirio" from Murcia. First Lady of Honour was "Isterika Confused" La Cala del Moral (Málaga) and Second Lady of Honour went to Violette Carson "of Elche "Zoo" Award nightclub of the same name "Drag Divax". The three Drag Acts will also be offered pride and place as the final float on the Carnival Parade.

Torrevieja will be celebrating the annual Carnival from the 16th January to the 13th February 2016. The two main

parades will take place on the Sunday 7th and Saturday 13th February. On Sunday 7th February at 4.00pm, the Carnival the first of two parades gets underway. The Carnival Contest Parade starts from Plaza María Asunción, just outside of Mullins Irish Pub, and continues along Calle Ramón Gallud, past the Virgin del Carmen Cultural Centre, with the main focus being just in front of the Town Hall Square and finishing at Calle Patricio Pérez street.

The more flamboyant night carnival takes place the following Saturday 13th February starting at 10.00pm and following the same route. The parade lasts about 90 minutes and thousands of people line the streets. Hundreds of kilos of sweets are thrown to the watching crowd and more than 1,000 people from many different school, clubs and associations take part. The night-time parade, has more of a Brazilian flavour to it, in that it can be a little more suggestive, but it's all down in good humour. Don't forget your camera and bag to catch all those sweets in.

Carmen has many ideas as to how to better the rights and welfare of animals in Torrevieja. For a start there will be a clamp down on owners who do not pick up after their dog has left a ‘deposit.’ That could cost you 90€. Acts of animal cruelty, such as the two men spotted throwing a dog over a fence into an animal shelter at the weekend, could be fined up to 10,000€ and banned from having a pet for life.

More than an estimated two hundred people visited the first Open Day with a couple of the pets finding forever homes.

More Pets were adopted at the Town Meets Country show as well. Phoenix Solos, Dinner Dance One of Torrevieja's longest established social groups, Phoenix Solos, will soon be holding a dinner/dance to celebrate 15 years continuous operation since its formation in January 2001. It has provided an opportunity for those on their own to improve their social life and make new friends.

The event will be held on 25th February at Restaurant Rendezvous, Altos del Limonar: a date which coincides with the 85th birthday of one of the co-founders.

New record low in the number of fatalities per accident since 1960 There have been 1,126 deaths from traffic accidents on Spain's urban roads, 6 fewer than in 2014. Spain continues to be the fifth country with the best road safety and is next to Denmark and the United Kingdom as the only three EU countries that closed 2015 with fewer deaths than in 2014. The decline of victims is repeated for the twelfth consecutive year. There were also more than 14 long-haul journeys million, an increase of mobility of 4% over the previous year.

During 2015, on interurban roads there have been 1,018 fatal accidents in which 1,126 people died and 4,843 have required hospitalization for their injuries. So there was a 1% decrease (-6) in the number of deaths and 2% (-105) in hospitalized wounded and an increase of 3% (+34) in fatal accidents. The death toll represents a record low since 1960, the first year in which statistics are available, when there were 1,300 people, with a scenario of mobility quite different (in 1960 there were one million vehicles and in 2015 the fleet exceeds 31 million).

From this data, road accidents has fallen for the twelfth consecutive year that is shown by the decline reflected in the daily death toll, which went from 11.6 road deaths per day in 2000 to 3.1 deaths a day on average 2,015. These figures are provisional and refer only to fatal accidents on interurban roads and taken up to 24 hours of the accident. The final and consolidated figures, which include the victims within 30 days of accidents in urban and intercity roads will be available in the coming months thanks to substantial improvements in information systems in claims, with junction with the file INE died in 2015. With these results in accidents on interurban roads Spain still maintains the lowest rate of mortality history and ranks fifth in the world countries with better road safety.

Within Europe, Spain is with Denmark and the UK, the only three countries in the EU that will close 2015 with fewer deaths in traffic accidents in 2014. Sweden and the Netherlands remain the same death toll, however, France, Austria, Finland and Greece recorded increases in fatalities.

With these figures, Spain has a rate of 3.6 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants well below average mortality rate in the EU at 5.1 per 100.00 inhabitants.

Accidents in 2015 include the following circumstances: There has been a rise of 14 million long-distance travel by road, which is 4% more than road travel. In total there have been 373 504 129 long-haul trips in 2015.

Increased ageing of the car fleet. The average age of the vehicles involved in fatal accidents continues to rise.

In 2015 it stood at 11.3 for passenger cars and 9.6 for motorcyclists, almost two points higher than in 2014.

More problematic offences by illicit drug use.

This year the DGT, through preventive ATGC has made 68,959 drug tests, a positive result of 22,451 (33%); 3,489 tests on drivers involved in accidents with 735 positive (21%) and other 3,220 testing positive offending drivers with 1,886 (59%).

45 Increase in the number of deaths in 2014 compared to conventional routes, which means that eight out of ten deaths last year occurred in this type of track. Instead, it continues the reduction of deaths in high capacity intercity roads, with 51 deaths less than in 2014.

Age: In terms of age groups, the highest percentage of deaths accumulates in the age group 35-44 years with 211 deaths, 19% of the total, followed by those 45 to 54 years with 184 deaths 16% of the total.

Fatalities children up to 14 years have been 20, 4 fewer than in 2014. Those over 65 years with 255 deaths in that age group, have accounted for 22% of the total.

By Autonomous Communities: The decline in fatalities has been uneven throughout the state territory. Notable increases in Catalonia with 32 more deaths compared to 2014, +28 Castilla y Le贸n and the Basque Country +21.

By type of road: Conventional roads remain the roads where the highest number of traffic accidents occur. In 2015, eight out of ten deaths occurred in traffic accidents in this type of track. Specifically last year killed 913 people in these pathways, representing an increase of 45 deaths over 5% compared to 2014.

Continued improvement of road safety on the roads of great capacity. Those killed in highway and motorway have been 213, 51 deaths less than in 2014.

By type of accident: 81% of those killed in intercity

roads occur on conventional roads. In such a way the largest percentage of deaths, 40% of accidents in which the vehicle left the road, while 24% were due to head-on collisions due. In high capacity roads, 41% of deaths happen for output via the vehicle.

By user type: Those killed by type of user have different behaviours: Those who died in in cars (569) fell by 4% over the previous year (22 deaths less) Those in vans were reduced by 24 people going from 92 in 2014 to 68 in 2015.

Decrease in bike deaths, was 42, six fewer than in 2014 Increase the deceased motorcycle and moped. In 2015, 219 scooter riders died, 49 more than in 2014 and 28 on moped, 11 more than the previous year.

Pedestrian mortalities also decreased from 114-113 Bus deaths dropped to the 23 over those registered in 2014.

Use of safety equipment: 22% of drivers and passengers killed in cars and vans in 2015 were not wearing a seatbelt. Increased use of the safety device in cars where the number of deaths from non-use of seat decreases, 117 in 2015 against 140 in 2014. In the case of vans remains about the same number of 2014 people not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident (24).

Of the 219 killed in motorcycle helmet 9 they are not used at the time of the accident. In the case of the 28 killed in moped, 4 did not have a helmet. For cyclists, 42 died and 17 of them did not use helmet, despite being mandatory on intercity roads.

13 children of 12 years died in car crashes, 4 of them did not use any safety accessory at the time of the accident.

Coordination Unit victims of traffic accidents: Uvat The DGT has operating units Victims of Traffic Accidents created in each of the Provincial Traffic in Spain in order to coordinate a comprehensive national network, information and care for victims of traffic accidents, facilitating access of victims to existing resources, ensuring their rights and promote the participation of institutions and local, regional and national administrations.

This Unit since its inception, has served more than 45,000 victims of accidents and has conducted numerous training and information activities with the Security Forces of the State, local and regional police and health professionals, social sphere.

Watch out there's a Tax Man about

Do you give craft classes, Spanish lessons, or even other fun activities in local pubs and clubs? If so you may be interested to know of a case where the Spanish Tax Agency is demanding €24,000 from pensioner for giving painting classes. The Woman was called in by the mayor to replace the regular instructor, and made under €2,000 but the Tax authorities have said they may withhold as much as €24,000 from this woman's pension for giving an arts class from a retired teacher for giving occasional painting lessons that earned her under €2,000.

The woman was called in by the mayor of the Albacete village of Ossa de Montiel (population 2,500) to replace the regular instructor, who was ill. Tax Agency demanding €24,000 from pensioner for giving painting classes. The two-hour weekly classes took place for two years at the local community centre, known as Universidad Popular because of its continuing education workshops. The substitute teacher made between €50 and €91 a month from the activity. Tax authorities say that she was not entitled to her pension payment during that time, as she was in employment, and have been withholding €636 from her monthly checks since November 2014. This penalty will be enforced for two more years.

Centre director Francisco Alfaro says that he consulted with the Tax Agency before hiring the retired

teacher, and was told that it wouldn’t be a problem because of the low monthly wages. Yet this woman has now had to turn to the courts in the hope that the decision against her will be revoked.

In similar fashion, Opera singer Montserrat Caballé has accepted a prison term for tax evasion and Barcelona soccer star Leo Messi is to face trial over €4.1m tax fraud. Opera singer Montserrat Caballé accepts prison term for tax evasion however, the 82year-old will not serve six-month sentence for withholding 2010 payments.

Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballé accepted a six-month prison sentence for withholding €500,000 in taxes in 2010. The 82-year-old soprano, who is in poor

health, was not at the courthouse to hear the sentence, but participated via video conference from her home after the judge authorized the unusual procedure. In 2012, Caballé suffered a stroke and broke her arm while in Russia for a performance, and has since limited her public appearances.

Caballé is not the only celebrity to have come under scrutiny from Spanish tax officials in recent years. She will not actually set foot in prison, however, as the term is under two years and she has no criminal record. Caballé, an icon of the opera scene for decades, specialized in Italian bel canto but became more widely famous after singing with Queen front man Freddie Mercury in 1987. Under the deal, Caballé accepted the conviction and a fine of €240,000 for claiming to live in the nearby principality of Andorra for tax purposes, even though she really resides in Barcelona.

In 2010, the singer made around €2 million from concerts in Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Russia and Ukraine. By posing as an Andorra resident, she avoided paying tax on that income in Spain. Caballé is not the only celebrity to have come under scrutiny from Spanish tax officials in recent times. So did soccer player Leo Messi, tennis champion Rafa Nadal and singers Ana Torroja of pop band Mecano, Alejandro Sanz, Lola Flores and Isabel Pantoja.

What beers would English people in Los Montesinos like to drink?

By Andrew Atkinson Two residents in Los Montesinos, Alicante, are in support of drinking some alternative beers.

"I would be interested in drinking something in line similar to the taste in John Smith's Smooth, and Tetley Smooth," Derek Brearley told The CoastRider. And Dilwyn Phillips, resident in La Herrada, Los Montesinos, said: "It would be nice to have a decent pint of bitter - similar to that of the Brains beers."

Independent Brewing Company 'Chinaski' based in Guadalajara, 50km from Madrid, are wanting to hear what beers the English people who live in Los Montesinos and surrounding areas would like to drink. Owners of 'Chinaski' Brewery Fernando and his son Rodrigo are a small family run business - who brew their own beers from vats - and are looking to expand. Speaking Exclusively to The CoastRider, Rodrigo said: "We would be interested in hearing from

English people living in Los Montesinos and surrounding areas of which beers they would like to drink."

Fernando enrolled on a Brewery course in Bury, Lancashire, in 2015.

Having returned to Spain the company has brewed Cask and bottled beers, including Cerveza c2 Pale Ale (5.4%); and a Blonde Ale (3.8%). Micro pubs and small Independent breweries are expanding in both the UK and Spain at a time when the traditional English pub continues to see weekly closures. Across the UK 30 pubs are closing each week. Despite this Real Ale and Cask beers continue to thrive.

Fernando enrolled on a brewing course at Dave Porter's Outstanding Brewery in Bury - along with a group that included five Irishmen and a Latvian. "I gained good experience from enrolling on the brewing course in Bury. I now have the knowledge of the individual hops and malts that go into English beers," Fernando told The CoastRider.

Torrevieja’s Easter Processions David McLachlan was the rather special guest speaker at the January meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of The Royal British Legion where he spoke to members about the origins and the workings of Torrevieja’s International Cofradia, Los Costaleros of Oración del Huerto.

He was supported by five branch members, all of whom are long time members of the fraternity, and all of whom took to the floor, resplendent in their ceremonial attire.

He explained that the International Cofradia is a company of International residents, both men and women who are resident in the area. The majority of the group are British but they are supplemented by Russians, Ukraines, Scandinavians and many from the continent of South America.

They number in excess of 100 people who have the task of carrying a large Paso, or float, depicting Jesus in the Garden of Olives, at the Torrevieja Easter processions.

David explained about the origins of the International Cofradia and how it was first formed prior to the Easter Celebrations in 2004.

Prior to the formation of the International Cofradia the paso was shunted around the streets on a motorised frame and a number of modifications were required to the structure so that it could be carried, rather than rolled.

Accompanying the float is the Ladies

Section of the International Cofradia who walk alongside the paso dressed as penitents or Nazarenes. This year Cofradia will take part in two of the Easter processions, the first being on Monday evening March 21st and the second being on Friday evening March 25th.

As with any large organisation there is always a need to recruit and 2016 will be no different to any other year. David explained that the organisation is open to all and it will probably need in the region of 20 new Costaleros.

Malaga Earthquake

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale was registered on Monday morning off the southeast coast of the Spanish city of Málaga, in the Alborán Sea. The tremors were felt all along Spain’s Andalusia coast, in cities such as Málaga, Granada, Seville and Jaén, as well as in Spain’s North African exclave of Melilla.

The central government’s representative in Andalusia said on Monday morning that there were no injuries but material damage had been caused. The fire service in Melilla was reported to be overwhelmed by the number of emergency calls from local residents and the head of Melilla’s local government, Juan José Imbroda, also reported on Monday morning that no one had been injured in the incident, although cracks had been detected in a number of buildings.

from using their vehicles in order to facilitate the work of the emergency services. The fire service in the North African city is also reported to be overwhelmed by the number of emergency calls from local residents, the news agency EFE reports. Many local people have come out of their houses and are on the streets due to fears of aftershocks.

The National Geographic Institute reports that the earthquake was registered at 5.22am, with its epicentre in the Alborán Sea, between Alhucemas and Meilla. The institute detected a total of seven aftershocks, the strongest at 5.34am, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, and another measuring 4.4 at 7.10am. Monday’s quake is the second registered in the area in recent days. On Friday there was a 4.9 tremor with its epicentre in the same area, followed by an aftershock measuring 3.0.

Foreign numbers fall again

According to figures from Spain’s statistic institute, the INE and a report in El Pias, Spain's population continues to fall as the number of foreigners leaving continues to rise. Statistic experts predict there will be more deaths than births registered in 2015 when the final figures are in.

Exit of immigrants sees Spain’s population fall for second year in a row Spaniards of all ages are leaving the country. Spain’s population has dropped for the third consecutive year, partly due to continued rise of the number of immigrants leaving the country. On January 1, 2015 Spain had 146,959 fewer people than it did on the same day the year before, according to data released on Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE) based on information from municipal rolls. These latest figures reveal that Spain’s population stands at 46,624,382 people.

The drop in the number of foreigners resident in the country by close to 300,000 is one reason for Spain’s falling population. Spurred by the economic crisis, many foreigners have returned to their home countries or moved to other nations. Those who have stayed, and have been granted Spanish nationality, now fall in the category of Spaniards registered on the municipal rolls, which increased by 0.35% – or 146,884 people – over 2014.

According to preliminary figures released by the INE in June of last year, 205,870 people were granted citizenship in 2014. Of the 4.7 million foreigners living in Spain, around 2.6 million come from countries outside the European Union. But their numbers have also dropped – by 377,000 over 2014. In Spain, a person dies every 69 seconds while a child is born every 86 seconds, that means there will be 19,268 more deaths than births recorded in 2015, statistics experts predict.

But the other 2.1 million residents from EU countries increased their presence in Spain in 2014 by 82,000 compared to the previous year.

Romanians and Moroccans continue to

make up the biggest foreign communities in Spain. One out of five foreigners living in Spain is from either Morocco or Romania. Because more than half are under the age of 40, these nationals are helping to contribute to replacing Spain’s own aging population.

The number of births in 2014 outpaced the number of deaths by 31,678, but this was the lowest such figure seen since 2000. INE officials are predicting that 2015 will see more deaths than births in Spain for the first time since the Civil War (1936-1939).

They also estimate that Spain will lose about a million people over the next 15 years and that by 2063 there will be 330,423 more deaths than births. INE experts predict that by 2063 there will be 330,423 more deaths than births “The number of deaths will not drop,” explains Pau Miret, a researcher at the Center for Demographic Studies in Barcelona. “The generations that reach very advanced ages are growing larger each time and those that reach the reproduction age are dropping.” Besides the decline in population, the main challenge will be ageing. The average age of Spain’s population will not stop rising for various reasons. First, Spaniards typically branch off from their families later in life than other Europeans. The average age is 28.9 years.

This prevents them from starting their own families any earlier. Spanish women are having their first child at around age 31.8 and the median number of children born to each woman is 1.32 while in the rest of Europe it is 2.1. “The rate of dependency – the proportion of people over the age of 65 compared to those between the ages of 25 and 65 – will continue to rise because of falling birthrates,” says José García Montalve, an economics professor at Pompeu Fabra University. “This will complicate the sustainability of the pensions system even if the unemployment rate is reduced. Everything will depend on the hypothetical improvement of productivity.”

Finance hurdle poses problems in attracting top players in amateur football

By Andrew Atkinson La Liga and Premier League teams have always got the cream of the crop in signing the best in the game with the clubs in the lower echelons left trawling for players. And in non-league and amateur football it is no different - with the top financially backed clubs signing the best players - both in Britain and Spain.

Los Montesinos based club CD Montesinos have a squad of players - of whom none are paid - playing in the Segunda Regional Grupo 15. Following the departure of Juanpe and the appointment of new coach Roberto Cases at the beginning of the season the club are eyeing promotion - with the backing of the 'Full Monte' supporters club. A major problem for CD Montesinos among other clubs - is the non-payment of players: "At this level it is always difficult to convince new players to join the club," said Roberto. "Especially when some clubs pay their better players. You cannot blame people for trying to do the best they can for themselves - and their family," said Roberto.

"Some players in the summer left the club, as expected, with new players arriving," said Roberto.

One player who made an exit from CD Montesinos

was talisman and family man Vazquinho - who moved to Sporting Saladar - and was also offered a job in moving to the Almoradi based club. Good crowds have continued to support the Vega Baja club this season, and Roberto said: "I was part of the team at FC Torrevieja and know all about the passion of the British supporters. “I was aware that there was a British Supporters Club here at CD Montesinos - The Full Monte - as there is at CD Torrevieja."

CD Montesinos have had an in-different campaign to date, having chalked up some excellent results - along with some shocks - against teams in the lower tier of the league. "At the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign I said

that I did not like to predict how the season will end. We have had a few 'blips', but I will always do my best," said Roberto. "Myself and the players will give our all to the club - and the supporters," said Roberto. League leaders CD Dolores narrowly defeated CD Montesinos on January 12, in the opening fixture of the 2016 campaign.

The New Year fixture list couldn't have been much tougher for CD Montesinos - with games against pacesetters CD Dolores; top six club CD Murada; third placed CD Benijofar, and fourth placed SS Fulgencio. In contrast the opening fixture of February (Feb 7), CD Montesinos travel away against Racing Orihuela, who are struggling at the wrong end of the table. With a membership approaching 400 the Alicante based outfit are one of the best supported club's in the lower echelons of football in Spain. Spanish PM Rajoy turns down king's offer to form new government Spain’s conservative Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, has turned down an offer by King Felipe VI to try to form a new government following last month’s inconclusive elections.

The news, in a statement from Spain’s royal palace on Friday evening, followed a week of talks between the monarch and party leaders.

In a statement, the palace said the king would begin fresh talks with the leaders this Wednesday in a bid to find another candidate.

Rajoy’s Popular party won most seats – 123 – in the 20 December election but that was well short of an overall majority in the 350-seat lower house of parliament.

The king will now most likely call on the leader of the opposition Socialist party, Pedro Sánchez, to try to form a government. The Socialists came second in the election with 90 seats and appear to have more chance of mustering support from other groups in parliament to form a coalition.

The nominated candidate must win a vote of confidence in parliament. If no party leader manages to win parliament’s support within two months of the first vote, fresh elections must be called.

No group had expressed any intention of voting for

Rajoy, which made parliamentary approval for him highly unlikely.

Earlier on Friday, Sánchez welcomed an offer by the radical leftist party Podemos to form a coalition government, but insisted that Rajoy should have first shot.

Podemos’s leader, Pablo Iglesias, said he wants the Socialists, Podemos and the smaller United Left to build a “government of change”, with cabinet positions

allotted in accordance with the results of the election. Iglesias suggested he could be deputy prime minister in a Sánchez-led government.

The newcomer Podemos and its allies came third in the election with 69 seats. The United Left has two.

Negotiations between the parties to form alliances have so far come to nothing.

“We have decided to seize the initiative and take a step forward,” Iglesias told reporters after meeting the king. “There is no more time for hesitation. Either you’re for change or for stagnation and impasse.”

Rajoy’s popularity has plunged over the past four years in government chiefly because of party-linked corruption scandals, unpopular laws and austerity measures brought in to help get Spain out of a severe economic crisis.

December’s election produced Spain’s most fragmented parliament in decades and ended the alternating grip on power the Popular party and the Socialists have had. The emergence of new parties such as Podemos and the centre-right Ciudadanos group, which claimed 40 seats, was interpreted as a sign that Spaniards wanted change.

Spanish baby develops scurvy after parents feed him almond milk-only diet A baby whose parents fed him solely on almond milk developed scurvy, doctors have revealed.

The Spanish infant had been drinking almond milk since he was two-and-a-half months old after developing an allergy to a cow's milk formula.

By 11 months, he was tired, irritable and couldn't support his own legs or walk.

In hospital, X-rays revealed he had fractures in his legs and back, had thinning bones, and was deficient in vitamin C, D, calcium, iron and zinc.

Shocked medics diagnosed him with scurvy, a rare 18th century disease caused by a lack of vitamin C in the diet.

Scurvy was once the scourge of sailors who had no access to vitamin-rich fruits during months at sea, but is now almost unheard of in developing countries.

Dr Isidro Vitoria, of the Hospital Universitario y Politecnico La Fe in Valencia, Spain, concluded that plant-based beverages like almond milk cannot be used to replace breast milk or infant formula, and paediatricians should be careful when suggesting alternatives to breast milk or formula.

Writing in the journal Pediatrics, he said: 'This case demonstrates that scurvy is a new and severe complication of improper use of almond drinks in the first year of life.

'Manufacturers should indicate that these beverages are inappropriate for infants who consume a vitamin C– deficient diet.'

Scurvy occurs, because vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid) is essential to make collagen, a type of protein found in many different types of tissue, such as skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage.

Without vitamin C, collagen can't be replaced and the different types of tissue break down, leading to muscle and joint pain, tiredness, red dots on the skin, bleeding and swelling of the gums.

The boy had been born with a normal body weight of

just under 7lb (3.2kg) and had all the required vaccinations.

At two-and-a-half months old he developed skin inflammation which doctors believed was being caused by the baby milk formula he was drinking, which was made of cow's milk.

They recommended he be switched to a mixture of almond drink, almond flour, sesame powder, brown rice malt, brown rice, millet and a sachet of probiotics and prebiotics marketed in Spain.

And from the age of six months, his mother offered him pureed fruits and vegetables that he would not eat.

By 11 months she had to take him to hospital as he had failed to thrive.

He refused to support his legs on a solid surface, crying even when an adult moved his legs for him.

When doctors tested his vitamin levels, they found he had very low levels of vitamin C, and abnormal levels of zinc, vitamin D and thyroid stimulating hormone.

After finding his legs were fractured and his bones thin, doctors diagnosed him with scurvy.

Immediately they switched the almond milk he was drinking to an infant formula as well as cereals, meat, fruits and vegetables.

He was also given vitamin C and D replacement therapy, and a month later his levels had returned to normal and his legs were stronger.

Two months after stopping the almond milk drink doctors were pleased to see he had started walking.

The British Nutrition Foundation says that babies need vitamins A, C and D in their diet.

They should be exclusively breast fed for six months to 'ensure they have the best start in life'.

By around six months of age, breast or formula milk alone will no longer be sufficient to meet a baby’s nutritional needs and the process of weaning onto solid foods should begin, it said.

The authors said that some infant formulas are fortified with vitamins and nutrients, but the particular one this baby received was deficient in vitamin C, D, calcium, iron and zinc.

This may be because the way it was processed meant the vitamin C was ineffective.

'Paediatricians and parents should be aware that plant-based beverages are not a complete food and they may not replace breastfeeding or infant formula,' the authors concluded.

Spanish junior minister resigns after link to corruption scandal

A corruption scandal in Spain involving state-run water contract company Acuamed claimed its first political casualty on Friday as a junior minister from Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria's office resigned.

Santamaria said Federico Ramos de Armas had decided to stand down after he was linked to an investigation into Acuamed, which police say had fraudulently allocated building projects and falsified certifications to fatten contractor payments.

Police raided the offices of Acuamed, which comes under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, across Spain on Monday and arrested 13 people. The company's director resigned the day after. "(He) handed me his

resignation this morning in order to defend his honour and in strict compliance with the law," Santamaria told a news conference on Friday.

The former environment minister is the latest politician implicated in Spanish corruption scandals linked to how public and private contracts were awarded during the boom years before an economic slump triggered by the 2008 property crash.

The public backlash against such scandals has taken its toll on Spanish politicians, with the traditional parties on the right and left ceding votes in an inconclusive Dec. 20 general election to newer forces campaigning against graft. The country remains without a government as political parties discuss possible coalitions.

A member of Spain’s Guardia Civil police force has been suspended for six months without pay after he spent an evening drinking rum cocktails in a brothel near Toledo when he was supposed to be on surveillance duty. The supreme court upheld the officer’s suspension, describing his behaviour as “conduct seriously in breach of the Guardia Civil’s dignity” as well as a dereliction of duty.

The officer, who was on patrol with his partner, told his superiors that he was only chatting with friends outside the establishment when he saw some suspicious movement and went inside to investigate. According to the owner of the establishment, however, the officer was exchanging banter with the women who work there while drinking cuba libres for an hour and a half, and entreating his partner in a loud voice to do likewise.

The owner called the local police station to

inquire whether it was normal for an armed officer in uniform to be drinking in his club and to ask what he should do. Two patrols were dispatched to the club to investigate.

The court ruled that any Guardia Civil officer who understands what is expected of them in their professional life would realise that going to a brothel armed and in uniform in order to consume alcohol is guilty of conduct that is “indecorous and prejudicial to the service”.

So called “clubs de alterne” – large roadside brothels – can be found across Spain. Customers are encouraged to buy drinks at exorbitant prices and then invited upstairs.

Last summer, the Guardia Civil command prohibited a unit in Tudela in northern Spain from allowing a local brothel to pay for the costs of celebrating the unit’s patron saint, the Virgin of Pilar, even though the donation was “well intentioned”.

The Municipal Information Office (OMIC) of Almoradi recorded 134 complaints during 2015, of which 88% were resolved favourably for consumers last year. In total the OMIC office reached a satisfactory settlement between the two buyer - seller parties resulting in refunds of more than 12,000, "in addition to the services or products that rightfully belonged to them to consumers."

The registered claims against companies primarily were focused on telephony (53%), followed by claims against energy distribution companies (13%) and banking institutions (11%).

The remaining complaints accounted for

23% and came from complaints of various kinds. Furthermore, the front office has filed 40 complaints against energy companies and 25 banks. The main reason for claims related to a poor service, unfair terms or breach of the law on guarantees.

If you have received poor service from a supplier or service, each business must have OMIC forms for you to fill in. This can be filled in, in English. You keep one copy.

The business then has to present the forms to the OMIC office who will try and arrange a settlement between the two parties. Each town has it's own OMIC office.

Charities 'last chance' on fundraising According to the BBC, UK Charities are on their last chance to sort out their practices for cold calling, email and junk mail campaigns, while in Spain, local authorities and the tax man are looking at pubs, clubs and individuals who have been conducting events for primarily UK charities, who are not legally registered in Spain, and therefor liable to paying tax.

The BBC added: Charities' fundraising activities could be controlled by law unless a new voluntary regulator succeeds in cleaning up the sector, a committee of MPs has warned in a report. They said it was the "last chance" for self-regulation of charity fundraising.

The new regulator is being set up following scandals last summer, when unscrupulous fundraisers were accused of targeting old and vulnerable givers. MPs said most charities did not engage in such practices. But the behaviour of some had damaged the reputation of all, they said.

Charity trustees who had permitted scandalous fundraising methods were either "incompetent or wilfully blind", the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (PACAC) said.

Poppy seller's death. Committee chairman Bernard Jenkin said: "This is the last chance for the trustees of charities, who allowed this to happen, to put their house in order. “Ultimately, the responsibility rests with them.

No system of regulation can substitute for effective governance by trustees."

Fundraising practices came under scrutiny in 2015 after the death of 92-year-old Olive Cooke, one of Britain's longest-serving poppy sellers. She killed herself after complaining she had been plagued by requests for donations from charity fundraisers - more than 200 letters in one month alone.

While her family said that did not contribute to her death, it did highlight the plight of vulnerable people at the mercy of unscrupulous fundraisers. Eighty-eight year old Samuel Rae - a former army colonel with dementia - was another victim. Charity fundraising companies sold his details on to other companies including fraudsters who targeted him for £35,000.

The government's response to the scandals was to set

up a review which recommended a new body to regulate the business of raising money. Its first chief executive was appointed before Christmas.

The PACAC report says the new regulator represents the "last chance" for self-regulation of charity fundraising, and that if it fails, statutory regulation must follow. The MPs say it is down to charities' trustees to ensure the methods their organisations use are ethical. If not, they risk damaging the reputation of all charities and their ability to raise money, the MPs add.

Rob Wilson, minister for civil society, said: "I have made it clear that the sector has one last chance to prove that self-regulation can work, but I am willing to step in and impose statutory regulation if necessary." Sir Stuart Etherington, chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, who chaired the government review, said: "It is crucial that charities' fundraising operations reflect their values just as much as other areas of their work do. “While the Charity Commission rightly has a role to play in ensuring that charities are well-governed generally, it is important that we do not lose sight of the principle of selfregulation in fundraising on which everyone is agreed. "I am not persuaded for this reason that it is appropriate for the fundraising regulator to report to a government body."

Back Stage with Dave Rawson This week we caught up with Dave Rawson, Comedy Hypnotist, Magician and Game Show Host. Audience participation is the key word with his ‘Push The Buzzer’ game show, Who are you, what do you do.

I am a Professional Comedy Hypnotist and Magician.

I am also a game show host.

How did you start in the business?

In 1980 whilst I was still serving in the Royal Navy as a Medic in Submarines, the Paul Daniels Magic Show was on BBC and from that moment, at the age of 21, I became addicted to Magic. I have entered a few Magic Competitions and won quite a few awards in my younger years.

I didn't start learning hypnosis until I was 33. The submarine we were on visited Florida and I went to see a Hypnotist show and was immediately fascinated. It was from that moment I decided that when I left the forces, which would be 7 years later, I would turn Professional

and go live in Spain. Since being a Professional Entertainer I have worked all over the world, Hong Kong, Thailand, Goa India, USA, Egypt, Canaries, Spain and the U.K A few years ago I decided to add another string to my bow and invented a TV style interactive Gameshow. It involves all the audience splitting into teams and having a remote control buzzer. It's now been going successfully in Ibiza for the past 4 years and in the UK. What would you be doing if you were not an Entertainer?

From the age of 17-40 I served in the Royal Navy in Submarines as a Medic. I was always a joker and would make all the crew laugh. Every week I would write and produce a ships magazine full of fun and laughter. So as soon as I left I knew that's what I would do professionally.

I have no idea what I would have done if I weren't an entertainer as am useless at DIY and cooking.

Who was your biggest influence?

Yes every time I perform in a venue where I've never been before What was your best moment?

Turning Professional and getting paid for something I love doing.

What's the best piece of advice?

Never ever give up. Keep knocking on every door; someone will eventually let you in Any interesting tales or anecdotes?

When I have people hypnotised, I choose a girl and ask her which famous person she would like to meet.

They normally say David Beckham, Robbie Williams etc. and then I put them back to sleep and when they wake up they think I am that person. It's hilarious they have their photo taken with me then I ask them if they want a kiss. They always say yes. I then turn the joke round on myself and say as soon as you kiss me you will wake up and just realise they have kissed me and not their favourite star.

After Hours at Bar Carmen’s with PALS PALS – Pleasure and Leisure in Spain is a club that has been going well over two decades and is a registered Spanish charity. Each year they choose worthy causes to donate their ‘profits’ to and over the years these have included the Spanish homeless charity, Elche Children’s Home among many others.

Sometimes all the money is given to one charity and some years it is divided between several. Which charities will benefit is decided annually at the AGM Located to the rear of Washington Square in La Siesta, the club have a dedicated venue with bar facilities downstairs under the New York bar. They pride themselves on providing live entertainment every Saturday night and have activities going on throughout the week including a couple of Bingo sessions and a meat raffle and a games

night. Always looking for ways to attract new members and visitors, this friendly club has recently had a new coat of paint.

Credit must go to the committee and as well as current and previous members for the maintenance of the venue which can

also be booked for private functions.

The AGM is held each year in January and this year it will be on the 19th so please go along and have your say and support this worthy long established club.

Membership is 10 euros a year and gets you free access to all the clubs activities, events and live entertainment nights, non-members are very welcome and there is a nominal fee of just 1€ for those that would like to enjoy the facilities and entertainment without being a paid up member.

Many of the acts that have performed regularly over the years and are well known locally Woody, Angie Mackay to name a couple as well as many others that have all given their time to PALS over the years, helping them raise funds for various causes.

It all started a few months before Christmas when Phil – one of the owners – did a sponsored ‘no alcohol for a week’. That raised €800 so they decided to carry on with raffles, donations and other mini events including a buffet afternoon with Play Your Cards and they achieved a massive total of €1345 in aid of Elche Children’s Home. They got a list of what the children wanted for Christmas and the money ensured there were no disappointed faces at the home on Christmas day and there were also a few surprises for the children as well. Phil and Julie want to thank everyone for their support in this fundraising event.

Ten Tips to Healthy Eating Believe it or not, an effective healthy eating plan can help you lose more weight than even exercise. And the best part is that eating healthy is not all that difficult. You just have to follow a few simple rules to enjoy the varied benefits of health eating.

Naturally sweet vegetables add healthy sweetness to your meals and reduce your cravings for other sweets.

Some examples of sweet vegetables are corn, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes or yams, winter squash, and onions.

A wide variety of fruit is also vital to a healthy diet. Fruit provides fibre, vitamins and antioxidants. Berries are cancerfighting, apples provide fibre, oranges and mangos offer vitamin C, and so on.

1.) Eat before you feel starved to avoid overeating.

As with fluids, if you only drink when you are thirsty then it is already too late.

A handy tip is to drink a glass of water before you eat so that you don’t feel as hungry.

Low Blood Sugar: Symptoms and Causes Low blood sugar is a serious condition. Find out exactly what it is and discover the symptoms and possible causes.

Low blood sugar, often referred to as hypoglycemia, can affect anyone at any age. However it is more common among babies and the elderly.

Low blood sugar basically means that you have a low amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood, usually below 60 mg/dL. At a level of 50 mg/dL is thought to affect the functioning of the human brain. This is due to the fact that glucose is the primary source of fuel for the brain.

It is also required to fuel the muscles, cells and ensure the correct functioning of hormones, such as insulin, glucagon and epinephrine.

Insulin, as well as glucagon are both manufactured in the pancreas. Insulin is responsible for the absorption of glucose into the blood stream, while glucagon breaks down the stored

glucose (glycogen) and releases it into the blood stream. Epinephrine, also known as adrenalin, is manufactured in the adrenal gland and its role is to elevate blood sugar levels, by making the glucose available for the body during stressful periods.

When these systems do not work properly, hypoglycemia may occur.

Common causes of hypoglycemia include the use of alcohol, missing meals, infections, kidney or liver failure, tumours such as hepatoma, fibrosarcoma and mesothelioma, medication such as beta-blockers or over-medicating with insulin, among others.

Symptoms include hunger pangs, anxiety, sweating, rapid heart palpitations, and shaking, seizures, headaches, confusion and difficulty thinking.

If you suspect that you have hypoglycemia seek immediate medical attention before the condition worsens.

Crispy squid with capers

Ingredients • 300g baby squid, cleaned • 200g plain flour • 2 tbsp caper, drained and finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 5 tbsp mayonnaise • vegetable or sunflower oil, for frying • lemon wedges, to serve Method 1. Cut the squid into rings about ½cm thick. Tip the flour into a freezer bag and season well. Add the capers, then give everything a good shake to mix together. Tip the squid into the bag, then shake again until all the rings are well coated. Mix together the garlic and

mayonnaise, then place in a serving bowl.

2. Pour some oil into a large pan until it comes about 7cm up the sides, but the pan is no more than a third full. Place over a medium heat and let the oil warm up. To test that the oil is ready, place a small piece of bread in the pan – it should sizzle when it touches the oil.

3. Remove a handful of squid from the flour and shake off any excess. Gently drop into the oil, then cook for about 3 mins until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on kitchen paper.

Repeat with the remaining squid. Serve straight away with the mayonnaise and lemon wedges.

Baked Rice - Arroz al Horno This recipe is typical of homecooking in the Marina Alta comarca in Alicante province-although you find slightly different versions all over Levante.

It comes from the Reus Torres family who run the Corral del Pato restaurant in an old farmhouse in Gata de Gorgos (Alicante). It's also sometimes called arroz passejat, meaning rice that has gone for a walk--because it was taken to the baker's oven for cooking. Until recently, this was always made with the Bomba rice grown behind Denia, which gave the grains a firmness and much greater texture.

Ingredients: 1 lb 2 oz Bomba rice 1/2 cup olive oil 1 lb 6 oz mixed chicken and rabbit joints and lean pork, on the bone and cut into small chunks 1 red pepper 3 ripe tomatoes, 1 grated and 2 halved crossways 7 oz garbanzo beans, soaked for 12 hours in cold water 1 head of garlic Salt Piment贸n Saffron About 1 litret water Preparation: Heat the oil and fry the pieces of meat until they are golden. Add the red pepper,

cut into three or four pieces, and the grated tomato. This may be done ahead of time.

Heat the oven to high. Bring the water to boil. In a 2 1/2 litre capacity casserole, make a bottom layer of the Bomba rice mixed with saffron; next put in the meat fried with the tomato; then the garbanzo beans arranged between the pieces of meat. Pour over the boiling water (using slightly less if the dish is not made of earthenware).

On the top, put the whole head of garlic in the middle and, around it, the red peppers and the remaining two tomatoes, halved crossways. Check for salt and put the dish in the centre of the oven for 25 minutes. It should simmer slightly and may appear to be dry earlier, but will need the full cooking time. Leave to rest for 15 minutes.

Car of the Week: 2017 BMW i8 Spyder HOW DO you improve on one of the most exciting machines of the decade? It’s the question that has faced engineers from BMW, challenged to improve upon the eco-friendly i8 sports car. Yet now it appears they have come up with the answer: take off the roof and cram in more technology than you’ll find in an Apple Store.

The German car maker has confirmed it will show a Spyder version of the i8 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which takes place next month in Las Vegas.

Although the new i8 is technically still at the concept stage, Harald Krüger, the head of BMW, has said the drop-top version of the hybrid sports car will go on sale in the future, with company sources suggesting that it may be as soon as 2017. As a result, we expect the show model to be pretty close to the production version.

The standard i8 was the electric-petrol hybrid that proved plug-in cars didn’t have to be anonymouslooking or boring to drive. Little wonder, then, that when it went on sale last year there was a waiting list time of more than 12 months.

With its clever hybrid drivetrain, the i8 is very nearly as quick as a Porsche 911 Carrera S — hitting 62mph in 4.4 seconds — but it can also cover 22 miles in electriconly mode. Its official fuel consumption figure is almost 135mpg.

BMW first revealed a concept — pictured here, in updated colours — for a roofless i8 at the Beijing motor show in 2012. Plans stalled, though, and now it seems Krüger, who took up the reins in May, has resurrected the project.

Aside from having a removable roof and a garish orange colour scheme, one of the main differences between the Spyder and its sibling is that it will be packed with gadgets.

Expect gesture-recognition features — such as the ability to adjust music volume by rotating a finger in the air — and touch-sensitive surfaces, with the prospect of small touchpads on the steering wheel replacing buttons for radio stations or the cruisecontrol system.

Other developments include three-dimensional displays that use colour and depth of field to show drivers different information according to importance, such as speed, fuel and battery power

levels.

The i8 Spyder is also said to have a vast 21in digital screen, similar to that in the Tesla Model S, displaying stereo, sat nav and other settings.

The biggest question mark over the new i8 could be its handling. The standard car was lauded for being a brilliant driver’s machine, with superb body control and balance. Cutting the roof off any vehicle will always affect stability — we’ll have to wait and see if that’s the case with the Spyder.

Will anyone warm to the Volkswagen Budd-e concept car at CES? WITH A name chosen to appeal to Generation Selfie, and electrically powered motors that can zip it along as quickly as a hot hatchback, the new Volkswagen Budd-e concept is a far cry from the original, 1950 Volkswagen Transporter that went on to endear itself to a generation of global nomads, surf bums and families that celebrated flower power over nuclear power. So the obvious question is, will anyone warm to the Budd-e?

Revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the Budd-e previews both a new, funky family car from VW and the next generation platform and components – known as Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) - that will underpin a range of electric cars from the German car maker.

Still reeling from the Dieselgate emissions rigging scandal, and facing the prospect of being sued by America’s Environmental Protection Agency for as much as £14bn, Volkswagen’s top management are powering ahead with the electrification of its cars.

The four-seat Budd-e concept car features a pair of electric motors, one beneath the car’s nose and the other in the back, which give it four-wheel drive and a combined power output of 235kW (315bhp). That makes it capable of zipping from 0-62mph in just 6.9 seconds.

Thanks to a new generation of

lithium-ion battery, the car is said to be theoretically capable of travelling 331 miles on a single charge.

Plugging in to a high-powered, 150kW system would give 80% of a battery charge in 30 minutes. However, the Budd-e’s batteries can also be topped up using a wireless induction process, much like an electric toothbrush, as VW anticipates improvements to the electric car infrastructure and home charging units.

The electric powertrain isn’t all that’s being previewed in this CES concept car. It demonstrates how car makers like VW believe that the so-called Internet of

Things will see cars become more connected to peoples’ everyday habits.

For example, when synced to the home’s smartfridge, the car could remind the driver on their way home that the bread, milk and cheese are all going off today, and – heaven forbid - there’s no Chardonnay in the wine chiller. VW has developed the technology in partnership with LG, the Korean electronics giant.

Songs could be programmed to play at certain points on a pre-planned journey. And when you arrive home, gesture recognition would mean the doors can open themselves.

Rear-wheel steering helps in tight parking spots, and 3D digital displays and touch pad sensors on the steering wheel preview features coming to VWs of all shapes and sizes in years to come.

Will VW build the Budd-e, or just parts of it? Driving put the question to Dr Volkmar Tanneberger, head of electronic development for VW and responsible for the Budd-e project.

"The basic idea is to develop a modular toolkit and take this flat battery into serial production, one motor on the front, one on the rear. This is the MIB electric platform.

You will see a car that looks a lot like this, on the MIB platform, reach production. I can’t say exactly when, but 2020 or thereabouts."

Tesla supplied just 208 Model X cars in 2015

The Model X, Tesla’s first new car in three years, was launched to much fanfare in 2015, but the company’s boasting of the “most advanced car yet” may have been a tad premature – just 208 cars were actually delivered in the fourth quarter of 2015, the first full quarter in which it was available to buy.

A crossover (combining design cues from SUVs and more traditional cars such as hatchbacks), the Model X was unveiled in 2012, with plans for it to ship in 2013.

That date slipped, first to 2014 and then to 2015, before it was finally launched in September of that year.

But a more realistic date is perhaps 2016, since Tesla says it had only managed to build 507 of the cars by the end of last year. At the launch, Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, warned that the company was only capable of building five cars a week, and was slowly ramping up production with the aim of a weekly output of “maybe, like, 800 cars a week”. In fact, by

the end of the year, it was producing 238 a week.

The major constraints appeared to be related to third-party suppliers of parts such as door seals and seats. In November, the company admitted that it was having such trouble sourcing the seats, which are custom-moulded, that it had decided to stop outsourcing their production, instead manufacturing them in-house.

The electric car firm did manage to supply more of its Model S sedan, however, delivering 17,192 of the cars during the quarter, a 48% increase from the quarter before.

But the news wasn’t all happy there, either: one of the company’s cars reportedly caught fire and melted to a crisp while connected to a supercharger in Norway.

A Tesla spokesperson said that nobody was harmed in the fire and that the company would share its findings after a full investigation had been carried out.

Come to Burgos Clint Spanish fans of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’ are racing to restore iconic cemetery The movie's 50th anniversary celebrations, due to be held later this year, are approaching, The iconic film is also on the list of classic anniversary films that local English Language Cultural and Film Club Admit one hope to show on a special evening to celebrate the anniversary.

Last October, volunteers and film fans headed to the region and people stood inside a stone circle in the middle of a green valley and reflected on the daunting task up ahead. According to a report in El Pais, all around them were mounds of earth and weeds, and beyond the stony arena itself, rows of bushes where 5,000 graves should be. “We’re trying to get as much done before the cold weather sets in,” says Joaquín González, a volunteer from Valladolid who came to do his part. “I bought myself a hoe just for this. I’m such a geek, even I scare myself sometimes.”

This ruggedly beautiful spot in Arlanza Valley, in Spain’s northern Burgos province, is the site of one of the most famous scenes in film history: the cemetery shootout between Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef in Sergio Leone’s classic spaghetti western The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the making of a movie that regularly ranks among lists of the greatest films of all time. The cemetery scene has often been studied for its innovative camera motion and dramatic tension. Yet the spot where it was shot has since fallen into disrepair, just like other nearby locations used for different scenes in the movie.

Since early October, 2015, Spanish fans of the western have been trekking to this remote location from far and wide to help restore it in time for the anniversary celebrations. Powered by part-time volunteers who use social media to organize weekend clean-ups, the project is an initiative of the Sad Hill Cultural Association, named after the fictitious cemetery – which was built by several hundred Spanish soldiers specifically for the film. After fixing the cemetery, the association hopes that the movie’s various filming locations in Burgos province will become a tourist attraction in their own right.

But before that, they are working on getting someone else to come to Burgos. “We’re aiming high: we want Eastwood to come here, but we need to find a way to

press his buttons,” explains David Alba, a spokesman for the Sad Hill Cultural Association. “For now we’ve sent him a letter with an honorary membership card, and we’re working on sending him all the information on our plans for the celebration.” The association has also teamed up with the Clint Eastwood Fan Club in Spain to get fans to send in 30-second videos asking the actor to come to Burgos. The videos are posted online and “the idea is to create a chain that will reach Clint,” says Alba. The group also came up with a crowdfunding initiative called “Apadrina una tumba” (Sponsor-a-Grave) that gets people to donate €15 for their name to go on one of the crosses at Sad Hill.

Admittedly, the chances are slim of getting the 85-year-old Hollywood star to travel all the way to this spot, accessible via a dirt track from the nearby village of Santo Domingo de Silos (which has its own claim to fame after local monks recorded an album of Gregorian chant that topped world charts in 1994.) But if Eastwood won’t come, there’s always Metallica. “It’s obvious that Metallica are fans of the movie,” explains Alba. “Since 1983 they’ve been opening all their concerts with the film soundtrack and images from the Sad Hill scene, so it’s not unthinkable that some of the band members might want to drop by to become personally acquainted with the place where it was shot,” he adds. “Through Spain’s official fan page we’re working to get the information through to the band itself.”

Celebrities or no celebrities, the anniversary will be observed here next year with cultural events, a film screening and a festival. And in the process, volunteers have been learning more about the film they love.

Through his volunteer work, Joaquín González once met a man from the nearby village of Salas de los Infantes who participated in the original filming. “This man told me several anecdotes, like the time an Italian film crew member asked for a local painter and was sent a man who’d lost an arm in the Spanish Civil War. This man was eventually hired as a painter and also as an

extra who played an injured soldier in the mission scene.” González, who describes himself as “an unconditional fan” of Leone’s spaghetti western, is hopeful that Eastwood will somehow acknowledge their work. “If he sent a message, even if it were just to say that he’s not coming, we’d frame it and hang it in our homes!”

The scene in which Blondie (Eastwood) recovers from his desert crossing at the Mission of San Antonio was actually shot inside the Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza, within the municipal limits of Hortigüela (Burgos). The imposing stone complex, which dates back to the 10th century and was once a major power centre in Castille, functioned as a monastery until the early 1800s. Since then, parts of it have been stripped away and taken to a number of museums, including the Metropolitan in New York. What's more, thieves have made off with whatever they could, explains a local guide. As late as 1981, national authorities were even considering building a dam over it.

Although a restoration effort is underway, much of the site remains in ruins. Asked about the part of the monastery where the movie scene was shot, the guide explains that it is currently off limits: in the 50 years that

have elapsed since then, this section has deteriorated so much that it now poses a danger to visitors.

Closer to home, a 100 miles to the north, give or take a few, although Javea may not be Hollywood, many film stars have come to the Valencia Community to make films over the years, including George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Yul Brynner, Dirk Bogarde, Sir Alec Guinness, Bruce Willis, Michael York, Oliver Reed, Charlton Heston, Sophia Loren, Peter Ustinov, Robert Ryan, Henry Cavell or Liam Neeson.

Valencia based writer and teacher Bob Yareham has published a book called A Set Jetters Guide to Spain: 101 Locations. He said: “More than 700 English language films that have been made in Spain, with a special emphasis on films made in the Valencia Community.

Many Paradors have been used for films, such as Sigüenza, where Ridley Scott shot ‘1492’, or Oropesa in the province of Toledo, where Frank Sinatra stirred up guerrilla trouble during ‘Pride and Passion’, Hondarribia, where Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen were marched into exile in ‘Papillon’, or Chinchón, where John Wayne set up his big top in ‘Circus World’ and Cardona where Orson Welles turned the 9th century castle into Windsor, and where Henry IV and his son, the future Henry V argued about kingship in ‘Chimes at Midnight’.”

The author has also devised an activity for educational institutions, through which Spanish students can learn about the rich history of the international cinema industry in Spain in a combined English and History lesson. That activity is a collaboration with the L’Iber Museum in Valencia, which houses the largest collection of toy soldiers in the world.

Back to winning ways for Monte La Murada 1 – 3 CD Montesinos Report by Eddie Cagigao As the 2016 part of the season started, CD Montesinos recorded their first win of 2016 with an excellent fighting performance against a spirited La Murada side at the weekend with goals from Macan, Fernando and Pley before the home side scored a late consolation goal.

This was a better all-round performance from “Monte” who really needed a win to try and stay within sight of the leading sides in this group. The Campo Municipal in La Murada, a compact and very well kept ground for a club of this level, has been a poor hunting ground in the past for Montesinos and for the first 20 minutes it looked like this might end the same way.

But just after the 20 minute mark, MACAN opened the scoring for the visitors when a long ball from defence

found Carlos out wide. His run into the box and subsequent pass to the far post, saw Macan tap the ball into an empty net to put Montesinos 0-1 ahead to the delight of their travelling supporters.

After the half-time break, Montesinos came out strongly and had chances to increase their lead. Carlos, Macan and substitute Orouke all missed good chances before Club Captain Fernando increased their lead on 58 minutes. A corner kick into the heart of the Murada area was missed by everybody and as the ball fell out wide on the edge of the six yard box, Fernando thumped a left footed effort in off the cross bar to make it 0 – 2.

Credit to La Murada, who never gave up and put the Montesinos defence under pressure. However, most of their attacks came to nothing especially as Lopez “The Cat” was in inspired form and was the travelling supporters Man of the Match. Lopez, who has been criticised in previous campaigns, has come on bundles this season under Manager Roberto Cases, who was himself a goal keeper at clubs such as FC Torrevieja and Orihuela CF amongst others.

Montesinos went 0 – 3 ahead shortly after when the referee gave the visitors a penalty for handball.

Although the Murada players protested his decision, the referee was spot on as it was a clear

penalty inside the box. Pley stepped up and buried the spot kick.

La Murada did pull one goal back with 10 minutes to go, again from the penalty spot, but by then it was too little and too late for any sort of comeback. The win for Montesinos leaves them in 7th position with 27 points.

They are now three points behind La Murada (in 6th position with 30 points). Dolores still lead the table (42 points) with San Fulgencio in second place with 37 points.

Goals from Miliki (2), Choto, and Aaron took their tally or the season to 51 - in CD Dolores' first game of 2016 at the Alameda. CD Dolores dominated throughout and wrapped up the game in the first half: "We're still on the right path, with the same desire, work and illusion that is reflected in the results and in the rankings" said a spokesperson from the club.

fixture against San Isidro on the back of a 2-2 draw at Playas de Orihuela. "Racing San Miguel clearly dominated for 83 minutes - the proof was the 0-2 score line," a spokesperson from RSM told the Coast Rider.

"A defensive mistake lead to Playas de Orihuela pulling a goal back at 1-2. The home team then began to haul long balls. And, having controlled the game, the RSM defence lost concentration in the final minutes, to draw 2-2," said the spokesperson. CD Montesinos host high flyers SS Fulgencio on January 30 at the Municipal Stadium - in what will be a testing fixture for the Los Montesinos based club.

CD Montesinos 1-0 CD Benijofar Manuel grabs winner for Monte in derby clash against CD Benijofar - that sees ref escorted by Policia - and Benijofar coach sent off

By Andrew Atkinson Cd Montesinos gained a 1-0 win against arch rivals CD Benijofar thanks to a goal by Manuel – in a game that ended with the referee escorted from the pitch by the Guardia – and CD Benijofar coach Francisco red-carded as tempers flared.

The fixture at the Municipal Stadium in Los Montesinos, with a crowd of 210 in attendance, saw CD Montesinos keeper Lopez save a one-on-one on 32 minutes.

Macan had earlier shot over the visitors goal, with Montesinos’ Pley the first of a plethora of bookings being yellow-carded on 40 minutes. HT: 0-0.

Pley sustained a shoulder injury early in the second half, being substituted by M & A. Carlos shot wide of the CD Benijofar post on 66 minutes. Carlos, who suffered a broken tooth in a challenge, was substituted on 72 minutes following a knee injury, replaced by Parades, who came through the youth ranks at CD Montesinos. In an evenly contested affair CD Montesinos broke the deadlock on 75 minutes. M & A passed the ball to Parades, who saw his goal bound shot cleared off the line. And following a

corner by M & A, Pley put the ball into man of the match O Rourke, who headed the ball goal wards, with centre half Manuel getting a touch to net. As the game became ill-tempered CD Benijofar coach Francisco was sent off for dissent.

And, after concerns of unrest, the local Guardia were called to the stadium. At the final whistle the referee was escorted from the pitch – into the guidance of the Guardia. FT: 1-0.

After the 1-0 win against CD Benijofar, CD Montesinos Man of The Match Dani O Rourke said he is hopeful that they can repeat the performance against SSF. "We are all a very happy team after the

tremendous win," Dani told The CoastRider.

CD Montesinos, seventh in the table, are hoping to close the seven points gap on SS Fulgencio, who have 37 points from 16 games.

"Hopefully we can go out and win the game against SS Fulgencio," added Dani.

Despite 12 wins and 43 goals scored

by SSF, Dani told The CoastRider the players are confident going into the fixture.

"If we can maintain the good form we are confident for sure - we look to the match going in our favour," said Dani.

CD Dolores out to achieve 'ultimate goal'

Torrevieja beat top of table Saguntino In another excellent game CD Torrevieja beat the runaway leader of their division, to consolidate their position in the middle and working their way into the top half of the table. After a hard fought first half, everything changed in the second half with Lewis popping up again to score after just three minutes after the whistle. The big names in defence came together again to bring the Torrevieja the win. Saguntino pushed forward but it was Torrevieja who sought to increase their advantage counter attacking as soon as they took control of the ball. However, Torrevieja held on and are now in ninth, just seven points away from a playoff position.

"CD Dolores dominated the game throughout, scoring a goal in each half," a spokesperson from the club told the CoastRider.

towards the end of the first half: "The sending off made it easier to win the game. Grupo Caliche gained an emphatic 3-0 win against CD Almoradi 'B' to narrow the gap in midtable placings.

But the 64-year-old was not leaving the club, just travelling back to the Netherlands to celebrate his daughter's birthday.
