'From The Prairie To Passchendaele" By Fred Knight. (Adapted By Joy Lennick). The former Director of the Foreign Residents Office in Torrevieja has a story to tell. It's that of his grandfather. Graham said: “Back in 1976, at the age of 83, with only one arm and the shakes of 'Parkinson's' in his 'good' hand, my grandfather, Fred Knight (1893-1982), decided he wanted to write his own story. He used a special apparatus attached to his head and an early electric typewriter. Having come into possession of the original manuscript, I felt that it should be published as he would have wished. Well-known local author, Joy Lennick, has adapted Fred's autobiography into this book which reads like a novel. It is appropriate that the book was published on 11th November, Remembrance Day, and That Next Year, 2017, Marks The Centenary Of Passchendaele, one of the more famous battles of WW1. Today: Cover The Court With Toys The Mare Nostrum Handball Team want to cover the court at Cecilio Gallego (the pavilion with the Blue Roof ) with toys. Today, Saturday, the

club will have a collection of toys and a symbolic launch of stuffed animals on the court of the Cecilio Gallego. All the toys collected will be donated to different local organizations. The event takes place at half time today; an initiative that will culminate with the launch of stuffed animals onto the court of Cecilio Gallego coinciding with half time of the match between the senior men's handball team and Florida University Caixa Popular de Catarroja at 6:30pm. The club hopes to collect a large amount of toys to help children from homes whose economic situation prevents them from enjoying a normal Christmas. Therefore, they will donate all the contributions to the local organizations: "ASILA" and others. Entry for this game will be free for all those who bring with them any type of toy for donation. There will also be a chocolate for all attendees and a big raffle with prizes for those attending. In this way the sponsors of the club hope to attract as many spectators to the game and obtain as many toys as possible. There is also a 35 meter long Toboggan Run in the Plaza de la Montaneta open until 8th January during the same hours. New Years Eve will be celebrated in The Plaza del Ayuntamiento from 11:00pm to 3:00am too. Santa Pola has a Renaissance Market today and tomorrow the 11th December 2016. The market takes place in the Fortress from 11:00am to 2:30pm and 5:00pm to 9:00pm. Staying in Santa Pola they are also having a special Fish Tapas Route until the 20th December 2016. A Spanish Tale of Two Hepburns By Bob Yareham Two mythical maidens have made movies in Spain, and they both went by the name of Hepburn, although they were unrelated. Katherine Hepburn, who out-acted Humphrey Bogart in the African Queen, played King Priam’s queen, Hecuba in The Trojan Women, released in 1971, and Audrey Hepburn, who entranced us all in My Fair Lady and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, was none other than Maid Marian in Richard Lester’s Robin and Marian, where she played alongside Sean Connery as an ageing Robin Hood, released five years later.

The castle of Atienza still dominates the Castillian plain where it stands, offering an unspoilt touch of medieval mystery that at least one film maker, Mihalis Kakogiannis, appreciated enough to do all the exteriors there, and where people still talk about “the film” without needing to mention the title. ‘Paellagate’ – Jamie Oliver and his chorizo Back in October Jamie Oliver caused uproar by daring to suggest people add chorizo to the classic Spanish dish of paella. The response was a flood of comments on Twitter, mostly from Spaniards who took a humorous dig at the celebrity chef for his hubris in daring to suggest an innovation for the classic dish. As timing would have it, on Tuesday in Torrevieja thousands of people turned out to enjoy a plate of Paella with friends and visitors at an annual event. By coincidence, last the British chef appeared on the BBC’s The Graham Norton Show, with the presenter inviting him to respond to some of the Spanish tweets that had appeared in response to his recipe. “You did one simple recipe and it caused an international incident. Turns out Spanish people are quite fussy about their food,” said Norton, who introduced the segment by referring to chef’s social media post that kicked off the controversy. Oliver had tweeted: 'Good Spanish food doesn’t get much better than paella. My version combines chicken thighs & chorizo http://jamieol.com/3vClFD #recipeoftheday'.

Pop the lid on and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes, stirring regularly from the outside in and from the inside out, and adding a splash of water if needed. Season to perfection, then chop the parsley leaves, scatter them over the paella, and serve with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over.

Method Peel and finely slice the garlic, peel and roughly chop the onion and carrot. Finely chop the parsley stalks, then roughly chop the chorizo and chicken thighs. Put a lug of oil into a large lidded shallow casserole or paella pan on a medium heat, add the garlic, onion, carrot, parsley stalks, chorizo, chicken and paprika, and fry for around 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Deseed and chop the pepper, then add to the pan for a further 5 minutes. Stir through the tomato purée and crumble in the stock cube, then add the rice and stir for a couple of minutes so it starts to suck up all that

The Vega Baja is full of surprises By David Hudson One of the first things that I did not understand when coming here in the 80s, was why there were Pirates in the Moors and Christians parades. The answer opened up a can of worms. They were the Berber pirates from Morocco that plagued the Vega Baja area and were the first to fly the cross bones flag in the middle ages. These pirates were brutal and not only boarded ships and raided the mainland they also held wealthy people to ransom. If the families did not pay they received the person's head.

Being muslim they are lumped together with muslims in the parades now. In 1708 Charles III paid the ransom to the Ermir of Tunis to release 300 Geonese slaves of the Sultan of Algeria. They were relocated to Alicante but due to riots by the inhabitants who did not want them, the King removed the pirates from the city and sent them to the island off Santa Pola: gaving them the island to live on. He named the island Tabarca after the prison that they were held in. The Geonese had privileges that included exemption from military service and taxes and were given boats, work materials and a school. In 1884 the population was 1,000 with hospital, church, police, priest and blacksmith. Now the population is between 15 and 100 depending on the season, as a result of Alicante refusing development of the island.

The Vega Baja triangle runs from San Pedro to Guardamar, up to Hondon de las Frailes and La Alguena with the Sierras of Orihuela, Callosa and Hurchillo. The Vega Baja is unique in the Costa Blanca for the reason that the people think of themselves as from Vega Baja, Alicante then Murcia but not Valencia. The reason is that Orihuela was the Capital of Alicante & Murcia under the Visigoths, Moors and Aragon kingdoms. It became the most important city in the south east of the Peninsular. It has been occupied by the Phonecians, Cartegenians, Romans, Visigoths and Muslims. It is said that if you just scrape the surface you will dig up history. A few years ago the Orihuela University was developing a new building complex when they came across 12th century Orihuela nesting at the foot of the Sierras. The answer was to excavate the site and build the complex on stilts so that you now can walk on the 12th century streets amongst the original buildings. When Aragon was conquered Orihuela lost its status and in 18th century was only allowed to use Castilian Spanish as the language of the day. Even today the Valencian language stops at the border of Vega Baja. In the 16th century the Bishop Loaces created the Dominican Friars in Hondon de la Frailes (Friars) and between them they formed the Orihuela University that was the most prestigious in Spain covering the Arts, Law, Medicine, Theological and Canon Law. Following an epidemic in the 18th century that reduce the life span to 20 years due to the swamp lands the Cardenal Belluga commenced clearing the swamps using convict labour who were pardoned if they settled in the region. The first areas were Dolores and San Fulgencio. This cleaning produced a rich fertile land that created the Garden of Spain. The land gives a colourful fauna with numerous species of birds, kestrels and owls that swoop around my house at night with their loud screeches, Nightingales, Blackbirds, Coal tits, Green singers, Martins, Finches, Wagtails, Flamingos etc. There are Natural Parks and Salt Lakes in Torrevieja and La Mata, Mountain walks in Benejuzar & Albatera. Palm parks in Orihuela and San Isidro. The culture of Vega Baja covers many products and food with influences from all the invading cultures. Towns that have “Al” or “Ben” were muslim settlements and have strong influences of Arab culture. The Arabs introduced ceramics principally in Albatera, San Isidro and Catral. Rope shoes, rope and basket making from reeds and grasses are made in Callosa and Redovan. The reeds are grown around Redovan and these were also used for roofs in the campo. An example can be seen on a roundabout in Orihuela. Orihuela and San Miguel are the centre for Carpets and Tapestry that supply convents and churches. Shops provide outfits for

communion, baptism, brides and religious wear. Folklore music is very important part of the culture in this area especially Auroras of Callosa, Catral, Bigastro and Habaneros Torrevieja. One friend of mine was in the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War and he said that the Spanish were always singing even in the trenches. The music can be an orchestra, a band, a choir with or without impromptu instruments. It's worth seeking them out as it always is an experience. The local Fiestas are passionate and enjoyable and around our house we have firework displays every day to celebrate someone's fiesta. Many municipalities celebrate “Romerias” and use their Ermitas and they have music, traditional meals and local foods. I've found that the best food in Valencia is south of Alicante and the nearer you get to Orihuela the better the food is, especially sweet things and stews, which may be the influence of the Arabs. Catral Romeria is the day of Santa Agueda with “Bolas of Santa Agueda” bags of turron and carmelos. Benejuzar has a famous Romeria of the Virgen del Pilar with singing Aragon songs and music dating back to when Orihuela was part of Aragon. In Rojales, Bigastro, Cox and Orihuela they celebrate Romeria day of San Isidro accompanied by country meals.

These local Fiestas sometimes have exhibitions of Historic cars, motorcycles and bicycles so it's worth a look. Mediaeval Fairs are worth a visit because they give an insight of the crafts and culture of centuries past. We must not forget Semana Santa Fiesta (Easter Holy week) which is rich in history especially Orihuela and Callosa. Spain was 700 years under Muslim rule before being returned to Christianity and it is expected for christians to publicly declare their faith against the persecution of christians through the ages that makes this a passionate Festival. The food on the costa is predominately fish and sea food with rice but further in to the countryside nearer Orihuela meat is included. Besides a Vega Baja Paella other dishes to try are Arroz con costra, Almojabenas, Arroz con conejo (rabbit), Olla gitana, Guisado de caracoles, Estafado (delicious stew), Cocido con pelotas, el Caldero, Cucurrones, Arroz de banda, Arroz de los tres punados, Sopas and Arroz a la hora. The sweet treats include Dulce de San Jose with bunuelos, pastelos de gloria and arabe sweets plus turron at Christmas. As a treat visit the Arab tea house near Albatera which is in the middle of the countryside where you can lounge on cushions and be served with sweet tea and very sweet treats under the midnight sky bursting with stars. I have only touched the surface on what the Vega Baja is. Why not get in your car and experience the real Spain.

Honduras Welcomes New Direct Flights from Europe Europeans looking for a quick Latin American adventure do not need to look any further as Air Europa announced a new direct fight from the Spanish capital of Madrid to the second largest Honduran city, San Pedro Sula. Now, waking up in the Plaza Mayor and falling asleep by the Puerto Cortés is even easier. On November 21, Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández announced that starting in April of 2017, through the European airline, Air Europa, there will be one weekly flight from Madrid to San Pedro Sula. The airline chose to begin flights in April and run them until October, just in time for Europe's high season for tourism. These new routes are set to increase European tourism for Honduras, while also encouraging more Hondurans to travel abroad. This new route represents another step forward for economic development for Honduras, where the government has vowed

to continue investing in tourism as a part of its Economic Development Plan, Honduras 20/20. This project is said to create over 7000 jobs for Hondurans, while lowering costs for travellers. By increasing connectivity throughout Central America, Honduras' tourism initiatives seek to establish the country's position within a more integrated and globalized world. As of 2015, Honduras had some of the highest levels of connectivity with Spain in Central America with 27.2% and with Guatemala and El Salvador with 13.5% and 18% respectively, with hopes of increasing that number even higher after the new route takes place. "This [new flight] means that we will have an open door to specific European destinations like, Barcelona, Bilbao, La Coruña, Vigo, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Valencia, Alicante, Málaga, Tenerife, the Canary Islands, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Roma, Milan, Brussels, Amsterdam, Lisbon and Oporto, among other cities", declared President Hernández. Air Europa will use airbus A330-200 that holds 275 tourist class seats and 24 in first class. As Honduras embarks on another journey to improve its global presence, the partnership between Air Europa and Honduras will aid in the country's mission of spreading its culture and people around the world, while remaining open to inquisitive foreign minds that hope to travel in order to learn about those qualities unique to Honduras.

Who is the Most Annoying Holiday Traveler? Drunk, sick and talkative passengers lead the list The holiday season is traditionally that time of year when far-flung families gather together to reconnect with one another, exchange gifts and share in a holiday feast. According to the U.S. Travel Association1, visiting relatives was the leading reason for leisure travel in 2015, so it is no surprise that the holiday season is a hectic time of year for travel. While most holiday travellers are in a festive spirit, there will invariably be some "bad apples" who, whether they mean to or not, can spoil an otherwise enjoyable travel experience. Earlier this year, TravelocityÂŽ surveyed more than 1,500 people2 to find out which holiday traveler is the most annoying, and the three most mentioned culprits were: "The Oversharer": This passenger is excited to be going home to see family. Really excited. So excited that she feels the need to share stories about every single relative (from her third cousin Bessie to her oh-soadorable 2 year old nephew). And thanks to the magic of social media, she is able to spend the entire flight sharing pictures of all of them.

"The Just One More Egg Nog Guy": To this passenger, the holidays are about celebrating at 90 proof. After celebrating the season at the bar, he stumbles into his aisle seat singing carols (while getting most of the lyrics wrong) and continually rings the call button throughout the flight for "just one more Jack and cola." "Rudolph the Red Nosed Passenger": In his mission to get home in time for Christmas dinner, this passenger ignores the raging cold/flu that has transformed him into a mucus factory. Additionally, he is invariably seated in a middle seat so that he can share his "bounty" with as many people as possible. In the process of determining the most annoying holiday traveler, Travelocity also found some helpful travel hints within the data: Passengers looking to switch seats to be closer to (or farther from) their traveling companions are best off asking a woman, as men are twice as likely to be annoyed by a "seat switcher." Ray's Rant: Is Death the End? By Ray Kearne Recently I had dinner with some friends, among them was Irene, who I was meeting for the first time, she is a lovely lady in her 60’s who had recently been widowed. As we talked about some of the terrible events that happen in the world on a daily basis, she asked how God could let terrible things happen and then declared that she felt that death was the end and when we die, that is the end of us, we are finished. I assumed that because she was from an Irish catholic background she would have believed in life after death. Many have stopped attending church except for the obligatory christenings, marriages and funerals. Some are catholic, protestant or Christians in name only. I accept that millions do not go to church or disbelieve in churches in general but I was taken aback when she said that she didn’t believe in life after death, I do not see God and churches as the same. Irene said that she felt we had a spirit but described it to me like an essence that is unrelated to the character and personality of the person who had died. Those who have seen the dead body of a loved one will testify that it is their body, but it is

not them. If she is right, and her belief is true, then this world is a very cruel place with no real purpose. Our lives would be pointless and God would be worse than Satan. God would be cruel, heartless, uncaring and vicious at worst or at best he would not exist at all. There would be no reason to be kind or thoughtful; there would be no purpose to being a good husband, parent, individual or businessperson. This would be the motivation to take what you want, do what you like, walk on anyone who gets in your way and pursue any pleasure you wish without fear of consequences. I don’t believe that Irene actually thinks or feels this way; I know that I certainly don’t. I believe that God is the father of our spirits in the same way that our earthly fathers are the fathers of our bodies. I believe that our spirits lived long before we had earthly bodies and our spirits will continue long after our bodies are dead. I am absolutely positive that our personality, our sense of humor and our character, all reside in our spirits, not in our bodies, and that we will all live

forever. I love the words of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who said “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience”. We cannot conclude that God does not exist because we are disillusioned with society, churches, governments and the apparent lack of humanity in the world. Someone living at the base of a volcano cannot blame God for his village being destroyed. Natural and man-made disasters in the world do not prove there is no God. In 76BC a wise prophet called Alma asked “What evidence have ye that there is no God?…….ye have none, save it be your word only…….all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator”. If there is a God, then there must be life before and after this mortal existence. You chose who is right, Irene or Alma.

Amazon unveils plans for grocery shop with no checkouts Amazon has revealed plans for a grocery shop without a checkout process, where customers will instead pay for the goods they have selected via an app. The Just Walk Out shopping experience uses the same types of technologies found in self-driving cars. The system detects when items are taken or returned to shelves and tracks them in a virtual shopping trolley. Once the shopper leaves the store, their Amazon account will be charged and receipt sent to them. The first shop is expected to open to the public in Seattle in the US in early 2017. Customers will swipe into the store using the Go app. It will use computer vision, sensors and deep learning algorithms to keep track of what customers are picking up off the shelves. Amazon has spent four years developing the shop. The shop will offer ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh every day by on-site chefs or by local kitchens and bakeries. One of those songs was called ‘The Fat Man’, which later became his nickname. 1959, The four male members of The Platters were acquitted of charges of aiding and abetting prostitution, lewdness and assignation after an incident on August 10th in Cincinnati. Despite the outcome of the trial, the scandal would severely damage the group's career. 1961, The Beatles appeared at Hambleton Hall, Huyton in Liverpool after returning to Liverpool from their first live performances in south England and London. The Beatles arrived so late for their appearance in Huyton that they only had time to play for 15 minutes. The promoters, having to pay The Beatles their full £15 were very unhappy.

1971, Playing the first of two nights at London's Rainbow Theatre, in England, Frank Zappa was pushed off stage by Trevor Howell, the jealous boyfriend of an audience member. Zappa fell onto the concrete-floored orchestra pit - the band thought Zappa had been killed. He suffered serious fractures, head trauma and injuries to his back, leg, and neck, as well as a crushed larynx, which ultimately caused his voice to drop a third after healing. 1998, Bruce Springsteen won a £2 million court battle to ban an album of his early songs. The case revolved around a dispute over copyright ownership between Bruce and a former manager. 1998, A recording of a 1963 Beatles concert was sold at auction at Christies in London for £25,300, ($41,500). The tape of The Beatles' 10-song concert was recorded by the chief technician at the Gaumont Theatre in Bournemouth during one of six consecutive nights which The Beatles had played. Also sold for £5,195 ($8,500), was a set of autographs of five Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Pete Best, and Stuart Sutcliffe. The autographs had been obtained by a fan in Liverpool in 1961.

Redding and his band had made an appearance in Cleveland, Ohio on the local ‘Upbeat’ television show the previous day. The plane carrying Otis Redding and his band crashed at 3.28.pm into icy waters of Lake Monoma near Madison. Redding was killed in the crash along with members from the The Bar-Kays, Jimmy King, Ron Caldwell, Phalin Jones and Carl Cunningham. Trumpet player Ben Cauley was the only person to survive the crash.

The Back Stage Interview with Tony Francis Artists Direct Spain went back stage for a chat with Tony Francis. Tony is currently about to undertake a marathon in his home country of Ireland raising money for charity in the process. Tony describes himself as a ‘vocal entertainer’ and started in the business at the age of five, singing with his father and siblings. No stranger to the stage then. He thoroughly enjoys what he does and even if he were not an entertainer, he would

still be in the business, probably managing acts in some way. Tony cites his father as one of his biggest influences and he grew up listening to a wide range of artists and styles of music, all who have influenced in some way, too many to mention. Tony says he gets an ‘exciting nervousness’ before a gig has never really suffered stage fright – the bigger the audience the better. Starting in the business at the age of 5 must mean a plethora of choice when it comes to ‘ best moments’ we suggested and Tony says some of his best times were when he appeared in pantomimes with several celebrities including Bradley Walsh and Cannon and Ball. Surely the comedy entertainer coming out in him.

Acts often say that equipment failures are some of their worst moments and this is also the case with Tony. He remembers when the equipment failed during a show at the Weymouth Pavilion, with an audience of 500, so he had to ad-lib until the crew got the problem sorted. Tony’s advice to anyone starting out in the business is to always be yourself, unless you are a tribute act of course! We asked him if he had any interesting little titbits he could share with us. With his alluring smile and clear blue eyes he related the story of when he arrived at a venue to perform with a top comedian, the comedian was due to go on first, but suffered a severe attack of stage fright and could not go on. Tony was asked to go on in his place, as a vocalist instead of comedian, you can imagine the response! But Tony managed to win

After Hours at the HEN’S TEETH Tell us about yourselves My name is Steve and I am from Germany. My partner, Veronica, is Spanish. We have been at the Hen’s Teeth for 2 years. Before that we managed and worked in several restaurants and bars in the UK over a 13-year period.

What made you open a bar/restaurant? My answer to that is probably the same as a lot of other people. When you’ve managed someone else’s businesses for so long you tend to want to do the same for yourself.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu? I’ll give you mine in detail as I love it so much. It is short rib Spanish pork shoulder with home-cooked chips and home-made barbecue sauce. Veronica’s favourite is merluza de la marinera, a Basque Country dish made with hake. She is from Santander, Cantabria, which borders the Basque country.

Where did the inspiration for the name come from? Your previous question was what made us open a bar/restaurant. We prefer to describe our place as bar/grill/tapas. Essentially we just are

a little bit different to every other establishment, meaning we don’t want a label that brackets us with everybody else. “As rare as hen’s teeth” is an old English saying that means something is unique and that is what we strive to be. The name is intriguing and definitely sticks with people! Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? Our head chef is Santi from

Favourite day of the week? I love the nights that we have live entertainment. We are lucky enough to have some of the best bands on the Costa Blanca playing for us at the Hen’s Teeth on a fairly regular basis. Veronica says she enjoys every day here, especially when there is a good atmosphere, which is pretty much every day. I would like to mention that we have a range of special cocktails and that we are sponsored by two of the leading drinks brands in Europe.

Any interesting tales? Nothing unusual springs to mind as we speak but I would like this opportunity to mention our favourite band ‘The Streeters.’ We have them playing here regularly and we have come to regard Bryn, Austin, Sergio and Oscar as part of the family. Peter Vaughan: Thrones and Porridge star dies at 93 British actor Peter Vaughan, best known for roles in Game of Thrones and Porridge, has died at the age of 93 as confirmed by the BBC. He played Maester Aemon in the HBO series and Grouty in the TV sitcom. His many other roles included parts in TV shows Citizen Smith, Chancer and Our Friends in the North. His agent Sally Long-Innes said: "This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning (Tuesday). He died peacefully with his family around him." Vaughan began acting in the 1950s and became a recognisable face by playing numerous mainly supporting roles on stage, television, radio and film. He specialised in characters with a tough edge - such as police officers, secret agents and authoritarian elders. His best-known parts included: The menacing villain Harry Grout in Porridge, which remained his most famous part, despite

the fact he only appeared in a handful of episodes: The strict father of Robert Lindsay's girlfriend in the first two series of another 1970s comedy, Citizen Smith: Town patriarch Tom Hedden in Straw Dogs, the controversial film made by Sam Peckinpah, whom Vaughan described as "one of the best directors ever": Felix, the dementiasuffering father of Christopher Eccleston's character in landmark TV drama Our Friends in the North, which earned him a Bafta nomination: The ageing butler William Stevens, the father of Anthony Hopkins's

character in Merchant Ivory's film The Remains of the Day: Jon Snow's blind, scholarly mentor Maester Aemon Targaryen in HBO's epic fantasy Game of Thrones: Vaughan played Bill Sikes in the BBC's Oliver Twist in 1962. He appeared in many other period dramas, including 1985's Bleak House. In 1967, he received second billing opposite Frank Sinatra in the film The Naked Runner. However, his performance was not well received by critics who accused him of overacting in his role as a British agent. He played Mr. Freeman in Karel Reisz's 1980

The French Lieutenant's Woman, the first star billing for Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. Vaughan described himself as a character actor, saying he did not have the looks to play romantic leads. "If you're a character actor, you don't need to wait for the next leading role," he once said. "But if you are a leading man you have to wait for the next part. Sometimes that means long periods without work." He was never out of work for long, but Vaughan was not overly fond of only being recognised for Porridge. "It bores me rigid," he once said. "I only did about four episodes and the film but never has a role been written that has had more impact." However Game of Thrones brought him a new level of fame with a younger audience at

the age of 86, and he remained in the show for five years. "I've been so lucky with parts," he told BBC Radio Surrey recently in one of his last interviews in November. "They talk about actors resting. The only time I have ever rested in my 77 years as an actor has been when I've wanted to. Lucky, lucky, lucky." Those paying tribute included Blackadder actor Tony Robinson, who wrote on Twitter: "An amazing actor. I'll never forget his performance in Our Friends in the North." Meanwhile, actress Kathy Burke posted a photo of Vaughan with Ronnie Barker in Porridge alongside the words: "Beautiful Peter Vaughan." Vaughan was married to actress Billie Whitelaw for 14 years until 1966 and then married Lillias Walker. He was father-in-law of Gregor Fisher, the actor best known for playing comic character Rab C Nesbitt.

This week on Song Facts we take you back to the year 1994 and a song that seems to chart again, year after year: Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'. This Motown-flavoured song has a simple message, Mariah Carey is not concerned about all the paraphernalia of Christmas - she just wants to be with her man.

There have been a huge amount of cover versions of this, including: Shania Twain (live performance, 1998), Olivia Olson (Love Actually: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, 2003), The Cheetah Girls (Cheetah-licious Christmas, 2005), Agnes Carlsson and Måns Zelmerlöw (2007), Miley Cyrus (live performance, 2007), Alexandra Burke (live performance, 2009), Lady Antebellum (A Merry Little Christmas, 2010), Michael Bublé (Christmas, 2011), Demi Lovato (live performance, 2012), Ariana Grande - (live performance, 2012) and Kylie Minogue and Mumford & Sons (live performance, 2015) to name but a few.

Latest news is that All I Want For Christmas Is You has returned to the UK Top 40 for a tenth consecutive year and maybe this could this be the year it goes all the way to Number 1... The festive classic is at Number 29 on this week's Top 40, climbing an impressive 43 places from the previous week. The track has since re-entered the Top 40 every year since 2007, shortly after downloads started counting towards the chart. Streaming plays a significant role in its resurgence this year, having been played 1.2 million times in the UK in the last seven days on services including Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. All I Want For Christmas Is You is one of 167 songs to have sold one million copies in the UK (not including streams). To date the track has spent 45 weeks in the Top 40, eight of which were in the Top 10. The last time the song entered the Top 10 was Christmas 2007, and it has (somewhat frustratingly) reached Number 11 twice since then. Will this be the year the classic reclaims a spot in the Top 10? "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was not released as a commercial single, serving instead to drive sales of Mariah Carey's Merry Chirstmas album. On airplay, the song made No. 12 US when it was first released. It was re-released each of the next two years, making No, 35 both times and establishing a place on holiday playlists. In 1999, it returned to the chart at No.83. In the UK, the chart positions are even more impressive. It was prevented from being the 1994 Christmas No. 1 by "Stay Another Day" by East 17. in 2007, No. 12 in 2008, No. 18 in 2009 and No. 22 in 2010. We can't declare it the most successful UK Christmas song of the modern era because "Do They Know It's Christmas?" has made No. 1 in some form three times since 1984. The song was commercially successful, topping the charts in Hungary while reaching number two in Australia, Scotland, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom: Number three in Spain and Ireland plus the top 10 in several other countries. The Daily Telegraph hailed "All I Want for Christmas Is You" as the most popular and most played Christmas song of the decade in the United Kingdom. Rolling Stone ranked it fourth on its Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs list, calling it a "holiday standard." In December 2015, the song peaked at 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it its highest peak since its original release. With global sales of over 14 million copies, the song remains Carey's biggest international success and the 11th best-selling single of all time. As of 2013, the song was reported to have earned $50 million in royalties. In December 2006 this became the first ringtone to achieve an RIAA gold

In terms of airplay (at least in America), this is by far the most successful Christmas song written after 1963, when Bing Crosby recorded "Do You Hear What I Hear?." The most popular holiday songs on American radio were all written between 19341963, with "Sleigh Ride" (1948), usually the mostplayed. This was co-written and co-produced by Carey and Walter Afanasieff. Afanasieff, who started off as Whitney Houston's arranger has co-produced and co-written many of Carey's hits including "One Sweet Day" and "Hero." He also won a 1999 Grammy award for co-producing Celene Dion's "My Heart Will Go On." Justin Bieber recorded a cover of this song for his 2011 Under the Mistletoe album. He originally cut the song in a lower range, before Carey suggested that they record it as a duet, with the Canadian teen star reverting his vocals to her original key. However, Bieber's voice broke just before he hit the studio, which made it the hardest track on the album for him to record. "Yes, that was high," the Biebster told Billboard magazine. "But I grinded it out and we got it down." Carey was married to Sony Music executive Tommy Mottola when this was released. In his book Hitmaker, Mottola claims that she initially balked at doing a Christmas album, since she thought it would damage her Hip-Hop credibility. When she saw the now-famous cover with her dressed in Santawear, she said: "What are you trying to do, turn me into Connie Francis?" As if we could...

Victoria and Albert Museum to display Tommy Cooper's fez A red fez hat worn by Tommy Cooper during his comedy routines is to go on display following an appeal by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). The Knightsbridge museum purchased the late comic's archive and "gag file" earlier this year, but had been unable to get his famous hat. But a former advertising executive came to the rescue donating a fez he was given by Mr Cooper days before he died. It will be on display at the museum from 6 December.

According to legend, Tommy Cooper began wearing a fez when he lost his army-issue helmet while performing in Cairo during World War Two. Legend has it that he swiped a fez from a nearby waiter, put it on, got a laugh and kept it in the show. In what may have been his only TV interview, he appeared without it; Michael Parkinson repeatedly asked him where it was, but Cooper evaded the question with an irrelevant story of how he'd lost £200 on a horse, punctuated with guttural sobs. As part of the Ottoman military uniform, the fez was something of a liability as it was too easily aimed at by the enemy. Cooper discovered this during an early performance, when a belligerent crowd tried to knock his fez off with bread rolls. “Stop!” yelled Cooper, according to Eric Sykes in his book Comedy Heroes. When one man asked why he should, Cooper said, “Because I haven't got an ad lib for people throwing bread rolls at my hat”. The superstitious, Cooper is said never to have left the fez with its top down (“in case it trapped the spirits”). The last fez from his estate (made of burgundy wool) was sold at auction in November

2010 for the princely sum of £4,750; if you fancy seeing a bronze replica, it's sitting on top of the bronze statue of Cooper that overlooks Caerphilly Castle. The V&A's hat was given to Hans van Rijs in 1984 while he was working on a Dutch Bassett's Winegums advertisement with the comedian. "He gave me his fez to take back home with me, so that the special effects team could begin animating it," Mr van Rijs said. However, he said the the advert was never made as "he died a few days after we met". The fez is looking a little worn with most of the tassel missing because Mr van Rijs cat liked to play with it, according to the museum. Simon Sladen, senior curator of modern and contemporary performance at the V&A, said the hat and archive will "give visitors a fascinating insight into one the best-loved entertainers of the 20th Century." Tommy Cooper died in April 1984 after collapsing during a live TV broadcast at Her Majesty's Theatre, London. Most of the tassel is missing from the fez because it was attacked by the donator's cat. The fez will go on display with some other items from the Tommy Cooper archive.

Russell Howard joins Sky 1 for a brand-new show Russell Howard, one of the most successful comedians in the UK, will write and star in a new series for Sky 1. In a two-year deal, the new show will first air on Sky 1 next year after the comedian has completed his forthcoming standup world tour. Russell Howard said: “I am delighted to be making this new show for Sky. It’s obviously the best part of a year away but I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in.”

The series will sit alongside a strong line-up of award-winning entertainment shows for the whole family on Sky 1, including International Emmy-winning 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy, Rose d’Orwinning game show Wild Things and BAFTA-winning A League of Their Own. Adam MacDonald, director of Sky 1, said: “Russell is brilliantly funny and I can't wait for his intelligent and incisive wit to be a big part of Sky 1. His new show with us will be

Requirements For Spanish Nationality By Residence

Article 22 of the Spanish Civil Code provides that "For the granting of nationality by residency it is required that you have held residency for 10 years. The period of 5 years shall be sufficient for those who have obtained a refugee status and 2 years for nationals from Ibero-American, Andorra, Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal or from Sephardic origins." However, one year residence period will be enough for: A) Anyone born in Spanish territory. B) Any person who has not exercised the right to opt-in due course. C) Any person who has been legally subject to the guardianship, custody or care of a Spanish citizen or institution for two consecutive years, even if they continue in this situation at the time of the request. D) If at the time of the application, has been married for at least one year to Spanish and is not separated legally or in fact. E) The widow of an Spanish citizen, if at the death of the spouse/husband they were not separated legally. F) Those born outside Spain, whose father, mother, grandfather or grandmother, would have

originally been Spanish. In all these cases, your residence must have been legally processed, be continuous and in place immediately prior to the request. The granting or denial of nationality by residence leaves open the appeal before the administrative judicial court.

The requirements for the validity of the acquisition of nationality by residence is contained in article 23 of the Spanish Civil Code: A) That at the age of 14 years you are able to render a declaration by yourself, swearing or promising fidelity to the King and obedience to the Constitution and laws. B) That the same person declares that he renounces his previous nationality. The natives of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal, and Sephardim from Spain are exempt from this requirement. C) That the acquisition of Spanish nationality is registered before the Spanish Civil Registry. There has been approved a new regulation that regulates the procedure for the acquisition of Spanish nationality by residence based on electronic processing in all its phases, which allows a significant reduction of deadlines. This procedure will be through electronic means in all its phases: from the submission of the

application through the electronic headquarters of the Ministry of Justice until its resolution, without prejudice to the possible submission of the application in any of the forms provided for in the regulations approved by the Royal Decree being made in writing. However, telematic communications with applicants or their representatives can be requested or consented to. Otherwise, notifications will be made on paper. Seattle 'thief' caught by remote car door lock An alleged car thief was arrested after he was remotely locked inside a stolen vehicle. Seattle Police Department has revealed a suspect was captured after the BMW was traced and the car maker locked its doors remotely. The man was found asleep in the BMW 5 Series, parked in an alley with the engine running. The car was taken after a key fob was mistakenly left inside it. Technology installed in the car meant the 38year-old man could be detained as police approached. The suspect attempted to drive away when officers from the Seattle Police Department woke him up, but he was unsuccessful. According to the police department's report of the incident the car's owner got married the day before the theft. A friend had borrowed the car and accidentally left the key fob inside. Owners of newer models of BMW's can use the ConnectedDrive app for a variety of functions, including unlocking their vehicle remotely. The app is also designed to track the cars in case of an emergency. It knows how many occupants are in the car and can contact emergency services if it is involved in a crash, providing an exact GPS location.

Fake news detector plug-in developed If you read it, see it on TV, Google it or Facebook it, it must be true: right? Well maybe not because as hundreds of fake stories and scams and fake people abound on the likes of Facebook, one of those who had doubts that Facebook was dealing with the matter was Technologist Daniel Sieradski, who has developed a plug-in - known as BS Detector that flags up "questionable" websites on Facebook and Twitter. Not impressed that their millions of dollars they have for research and development, it appears Facebook is currently blocking links to the site. BS Detector is a plug-in that uses a list of fake news sources as its reference point. It can be added to Chrome and Mozilla browsers and when it spots a potentially false story, flags it with a red banner reading: "This website is considered a questionable source." It was created, Mr Sieradski said, "in about an hour" as a "rejoinder to Mark Zuckerberg's dubious claims that Facebook is unable to substantively address the proliferation of fake news on its platform". It has had over 25,000 installs since launch. "I

Last Monday, at the Avv. Giovanni Agnelli Plant (AGAP) where the Ghibli sports saloon and the Quattroporte flagship saloon are built, celebrations were held to mark the production of the 100,000th car. It was a white Quattroporte Model Year 2017, equipped with the 350 horsepower 3.0 litre V6 Twin-Turbo engine built by Ferrari. This special Quattroporte is destined for China, a strategic market for Maserati and of primary importance for the Brand's flagship saloon car.

Forgotten Women Hero’s of Formula One By Nigel Owen There have been only five Formula One women drivers since the inception of the Formula One World Championship for Drivers in 1950. Five women racing drivers have entered at least one Grand Prix, although only two of them ever qualified and started a race. The woman who competed in the most Grand Prix and was the first and only to score points was Lella Lombardi, with 17 entries and 12 starts. Maria Teresa de Filippis (11 November 1926 – 8 January 2016) was an Italian racing driver, and the first woman to race in Formula One. She participated in five World Championship Grand Prix in

The appearance meant she also joined a select band of seven Formula One drivers who have also competed in the Olympics Desiré Wilson (born 26 November 1953) is a former racing driver from South Africa and one of only five women to have competed in Formula One. Born in Brakpan she entered one Formula One World Championship Grand Prix in 1980 with a non-works RAM Racing-prepared Williams FW07, but failed to qualify. She also raced in the 1981 non-world championship South African Grand Prix in a one off deal with Tyrrell Racing. She became the only woman to win a Formula One race of any kind when she won at Brands Hatch in the short-lived British Aurora F1 series in 1980. As a result of this achievement, she has a grandstand at Brands Hatch named after her.

Giovanna Amati

Giovanna Amati (born 20 July 1959) is a former professional racing driver from Italy. She is the last female driver to have entered the Formula One World Championship. Amati signed with the Brabham team in January 1992 to partner Eric van de Poele after the team was unable to sign Japanese F3000 driver Akihiko Nakaya because he was not granted a super licence. The announcement of a female driver gained publicity for the Brabham team. Before the first round in South Africa, Amati had little experience in driving Formula One car. In South Africa, Amati's inexperience showed on the track after spinning six times during practice. During qualifying, she was unable to qualify after setting a time that was nine seconds slower than pole sitter Nigel Mansell and four seconds slower than team-mate Van de Poele. At Mexico, Amati had failed to qualify for the second

consecutive race having set a time more than 10 seconds slower than Mansell. In Brazil, Amati once again failed to qualify for the race having a time 11 seconds slower than Mansell. Soon after the race, Amati was sacked by Brabham and was replaced by Damon Hill. Women Test Drivers In 2014, Susie Wolff (GB) was the first woman to take part in a Formula One race weekend in 22 years, at the British Grand Prix, at Silverstone. She became the first woman to participate in a Formula One weekend since 1992, when Giovanna Amati made three unsuccessful Grand Prix qualification attempts. Other women F1 test drivers were Sarah Fisher (USA) Team McLaren, Katherine Legge (GB) Team Minardi, María de Villota (ESP) Team Marussia, until her crash in 2012 and death the following year. Chapecoense plane crash: Team awarded Copa Sudamericana Brazilian club Chapecoense have been awarded the Copa Sudamericana by South American football confederation Conmebol after most of their team died in a plane crash en route to the final. Seventy-one people, including 19 players and staff, were killed in the crash on the way to Colombia for the first leg. Colombian opponents Atletico Nacional, who asked for Chapecoense to be awarded the trophy, have been given a Fair Play award to acknowledge their "spirit of peace, understanding and fair play". Chapecoense will be given the $2m (£1.57m) in prize money while Atletico Nacional will receive $1m (£787,000). Chapecoense vice-president Ivan Tozzo hailed the decision as "justice", telling a news conference on Monday: "We were sure that 'Chape' would be champions. It is a beautiful tribute."

World Cup finals format: Three-team groups & 48 finalists in Gianni Infantino plan Future World Cup finals will feature 16 groups of three countries in a 48-team tournament, if Fifa president Gianni Infantino gets his wish. Infantino, who became head of Fifa in February, previously spoke of expanding the World Cup from 32 teams

to 40. Under his favoured 16-group structure the top two teams would progress to the last 32 and ongoing knockout matches. A decision will be made in January but any change would not be likely to take effect before the 2026 World Cup. The number of teams competing at a World Cup last increased in 1998 when the tournament expanded from 24 to 32 countries. Uefa's Euro 2016 tournament featured 24 nations, an increase from the 16-team format in place since 1996.

Brazil's leading football clubs have pledged to loan players to Chapecoense for free and asked for them to be safeguarded from relegation from the top flight for the next three seasons. As Sudamericana champions, Chapecoense get a guaranteed spot in next year's Copa Libertadores, South America's equivalent of the Champions League. It also means that Chapecoense will face Atletico Nacional - the defending Copa Libertadores champions - in a two-game series next year between the continent's two club champions. Former Brazil and Barcelona forward Ronaldinho and ex-Argentina international Juan Roman Riquelme have reportedly offered to play for the club, while another former Barca player, Eidur Gudjohnsen, has offered his services. Brazil will play Colombia in a friendly match at the end of January to help victims of the air crash. Barcelona invite Chapecoense to play friendly in 2017 Barcelona have invited Brazilian club Chapecoense to play them in a pre-season friendly next summer. The friendly would be for the Joan Gamper trophy, which is an annual match between Barcelona and an invited team. Barcelona said they wanted to make the Joan Gamper trophy "a great tribute to the world of football through various activities around this match". "Along with the invitation to Chapecoense to the 2017 Joan Gamper Trophy, Barcelona would like to collaborate on the institutional and sporting reconstruction of the club, and help to recover the competitive level that it had," they added.

Video replays: Referees to use pitch-side monitors at Fifa's Club World Cup Referees will be able to use a pitch-side monitor for the first time to review decisions when the Club World Cup begins in Japan on Thursday. Video assistant referees will review "match-changing" situations before informing the on-field official. The referee will then be able to view footage for some decisions - something not permitted in previous trials. Fifa's chief of technical development Marco van Basten said the move "represents a big step forward". The Club World Cup, which features champion club sides from each of Fifa's six continental confederations, plus the domestic champions from the host nation, begins in Yokohama with Kashima Antlers taking on Auckland City.
