The Nativity scene is also open 24-hours a day, and is especially attractive in the evening as many of the exhibits have lights and working models. Next Tuesday December 6th at 7.00pm, the first concert of the 2016-17 season of the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra will take place at the Torrevieja Auditorium. This time, the orchestra will perform Holberg Suite, from the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, Edward Elgar’s String Serenade, Bejamin Britten’s Simple Symphony and the Concert for Marimba and String Orchestra, from the French composer Emmanuel Séjourné. Holberg Suite, Op. 40, was originally composed by Grieg for piano in 1884, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Danish writer Ludvig Holberg (considered by most the father of Danish and Norwegian literature). It was adapted for string orchestra just one year after by the composer itself, and it’s written in the baroque way (as a set of popular dances from that epoque). Elgar’s String Serenade in E minor, Op. 20, was composed in 1892, although it wasn’t performed for the first time until 1896 in Amberes. It was dedicated to his friend, the philosopher and amateur musician Edward W. Whinfield. The suite is believed to be a reworking of one of the first works from his youth, although the central Larghetto is considered one of his best and most mature writings, and very frequently performed. Britten’s Simple Symphony, Op 4, was composed between late 1933 and early 1934. It’s a work for string orchestra (or quartet) based on bits of score written for piano when the autor was a teenager. It’s dedicated to Audrey Alston, his viola teacher from his childhood. The Concert for Marimba and String Orchestra was written by Séjourné in 2006. Emmanuel Séjourné (born in 1961) is considered one of the best vibraphone and marimba players in the world, and this concert is nothing but a beautiful display to show the mastery of the soloist. Bethlehem Figures On Display Tonight Al hough they were mysteriously 'lost' for a week last Christmas, the spectacular miniature Nativity scene is now on display in Torrevieja's main square, in front of the Inmaculada Church. The Bethlehem Nativity scene, is made up of of more than 250 parts and valued at around 27,000€ and is stored in a warehouse in Pilar de la Horadada by an association of nativity scenes. The scene has been gracing Torrevieja for over 15 years and features many scenes with a local theme, such as the salt lakes and pyramids of salt, Torre de Moro and other local artefacts. It's open 24-hours a day but probably more spectacular at night due to the display being lit up from inside the sculptures with many of the props working. Thus its a photographers delight and captured on thousands of mobile phone video apps every year. Nothing To Read On Orihuela Costa (apart from The CoastRider of course) Last week the Orihuela Town Hall announced that they were close to finishing a new multicultural centre, in calle Tosca in the PAU-8, Villamartin Area. It is a brand new two-floor building containing different multipurpose rooms that can be used for concerts, performances, rehearsals, meetings, etc. This is the area's third such facility as the Orihuela Costa already has two more civic centres: the Centro Civico Alameda del Mar, located behind Hipercor at calle Allodia, plus the Punto de Lectura in Lomas de Cabo Roig; this being a library that features different multipurpose rooms. However, following this announcement, in a Press Release from CLARO, they say: “The inappropriate reading point of the coast (Punto de Lectura in Lomas de Cabo Roig) and its volunteers, are in a precarious situation due to the incompetent management from the coordinating councillors and advisers. The Coast of Orihuela with its nearly 50,000 residents needs a library now. The unknown, remote and insufficient Reading Point, which emerged from the magic hat of the socialist councillors of the last legislature in 2013, as a handout to La Costa, for the inauguration of the 3rd library La Maria Moliner, whose cost amounted to € 2,600,000, is dying thanks to the disastrous management, carried out by the coordinators of

Many shortcomings made it difficult for them to manage the Reading Point. They were not provided with basic office supplies such as pencils, paper etc which the volunteers had to fork out for themselves, they had to use their own mobile phones, Wi-Fi, forms for bookkeeping etc. Out of 14ooo books only 8000 have shelf room of which about more than half 6ooo are in boxes still unpacked due to lack of space This number being totally insufficient, since the parameters for these centres in the Valencian Community are 1.1 books per inhabitant, and in the Coast this should translate into being 0.25 books, which is well below the average. Etc. , situation that led to the closure of the Reading Point. Faced with the repeated demand from local associations, schools, the situation was addressed a

In light of the complaints from the volunteers about these shortcomings, the Coast Coordinator's adviser, inappropriately told them, "that there is no money for this centre, nor for its cleaning, and if you want cleaning you have to buy the products and clean this municipal centre yourselves as do the other 2 or 3 social groups that use the centre on a weekly basis.. " A very regrettable utterance from a public servant in receipt of a generous salary paid for by the public coffers, paid to solve these deficiencies. The volunteers are tired of so many empty promises, for the good work they are doing and are considering to resign again, not in the least in light of yet more municipal nonsense. All this is further proof which adds to the already tall tally of what is the mismanagement of the government team of PP and C's and to the comparative grievance, in this case in a cultural service, more absurd considering that in Orihuela there is a budget of more than 1.000.000-€ intended for culture. The Coast needs that Multicultural Centre, by general neighbourhood demand, not in a remote place like this, but in a central place, as claimed by associations and neighbours. The fact is that none of the residents have been consulted or informed of its planned location. The need for a centre which has a library in fit conditions for the varied and multicultural population that it has, and for the more than 5,000 children and young people is critical and way over due. Claro will present a proposal to the budgets of the City Council so that the necessary funds are allocated urgently, to end these deficiencies, and to support the disinterested social work of these volunteers, thereby avoiding the closure of this much appreciated Reading Point, until we have the finalisation of the Multicultural Centre for La Costa, which includes a library that provides a sufficient service for the great demand of the neighbourhood that exists and which takes into consideration the constant increase of population in this area of ??the Municipality. Claro will also request the support of the Consell Valencià of Culture, an advisory and advisory institution of the Generalitat Valenciana in the specific subjects of culture, as one of its missions is to watch over the defence and promotion of cultural values. This is to once and for all put a stop to this cultural gap existing between the Casco with its 3 libraries and the 50.ooo neighbours of the Coast, with the precarious situation in which it finds it selves, without Multicultural centre and without Municipal Library, despite the undisputed fact that according to Spanish law, a town with more than 5000 inhabitants have the right to a public library.”

By Bob Yareham As crazy as it may sound, the Cuban authorities are not crazy about James Bond, and have never been especially co-operative when it comes to making Bond films on the island. They wouldn’t even lend their scenery to Sean Connery when he made a film there that wasn’t especially hostile to the Cuban revolution. Fortunately, Cádiz bears a passing resemblance to Havana, and was the chosen location for two films about Castro’s haven. When British ex-army officer Robert Dapes arrives in Cuba to advise the Batista government on fighting the revolutionaries, he realises that the cause is already lost, with well organised rebels constantly gaining ground against poorly trained government troops. His difficulties are compounded when he runs into Alexandra, the love of his life who has settled for a comfortable marriage which is now threatened by the revolution and by the exploits of her philandering husband. At the beginning of Richard Lester’s Cuba, two

suspects are being driven to a seaside fortress which in reality is the castle of San Sebastian in Cádiz harbour. So Cuban-looking is it in fact that it would be used again for the same function in the James Bond film ‘Die Another Day’. Cadiz’s Plaza de España was used for the scene with the Havana crowds hailing Castro, and black marines

from the nearby Rota Military Base helped to give the scene some authentic Havanan ethnicity. The battle scenes in a cane field with the old steam train were shot in Motril, using the famous Babwil 140 train, used in so many films. Martin Balsam’s troops are defeated among the reeds by Castro’s

Motril is also host to the tobacco factory that an American businessman is thinking of doing business with, and is in reality the Fabrica del Pilar, an old sugar factory where, in another scene, Sean Connery is taken prisoner by the rebels. These scenes also include some footage shot in the old tobacco factory of Cadiz, which has since been transformed into the Palacio de Congresos. When Connery takes a young officer to ambush some guerrillas, the filming was done near the Camino del Canal around Monte Castillo known as the Era del Maíz, just above the

aerodrome E.V.A 9, also at Motril. When he arrives in Cuba, Connery is taken to a modern hotel, which he rejects for something with more ‘local colour.’ The hotel he rejected was Malaga’s Miramar Hotel, while the more down-market one he moves to is the Hotel Roma en Calle Real, Cadiz. Another location in Cadiz was the Isla (Island) del Trocadero, while Malaga’s Town Hall and Plaza de San Juan de Dios also feature in the film. Some equestrian elegance was provided by the Fundación Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Equestre at Avenida Duque de Abrantes, Jerez de la Frontera. The Havana Yacht Club scenes were also shot in Jerez, using the swimming pool of the Five Star Hotel Jerez, Avenida Alcalde Álvaro Domecq, 35, where Connery

actually stayed instead of the seedier Hotel Roma. Perhaps the most curious scene in the film is the one in which Connery visits a police station (Comiseria de Policia) and walks past a row of cages holding prisoners. Behind them we can make out some children playing basketball. All very charming and probably typical of preCastro Cuban police stations, except that the scene was shot in the Padre Luis Coloma school in Jeréz de la Frontera where, presumably for budgetary reasons, they didn’t bother to close the school for filming. Cádiz got another chance to be Cuba when Pierce Brosnan’s Bond need to sneak onto the island to visit a spa. The spa, where Bond meets Jinx (Halle Berry), is in fact the Castle of San Sebastian in Cádiz, and the wide sweeping Bay of Cuba is Cádiz Bay too. Filming took place between 3-12 April 2002 and made good use of 600 local extras. The castle is situated on a small island at the end of La Caleta Beach,

where Halle Berry walks out of the sea in a bikini, wearing a white belt and a diving knife, just like Ursula Andres did in ‘Dr. No.’

After Bond comes through the window of the medical facility in Cuba, he grabs a few grapes as he did before making his exit from a room in the medical centre in ‘Thunderball’. The spot where Bond’s arrives in Cuba is ‘el Campo del Sur’ and the road he drives along goes to the Camposoto beach at San Fernando.

I was about to head off to Ireland two weeks ago and rummaging through the fridge for a snack I came across some brie that I knew would not last until my return. Before I left we had a small party for Thanksgiving to attend with a few friends from the USA and looking for something quick and easy to make, a quick rummage around the kitchen for a few extra ingredients and I came up with Caramel Apple Baked Brie.

December is a busy month. We have Spanish holidays and Red Days this week and Christmas is just around the corner, and it seems like every gathering I go to includes an invitation to bring some sort of food. And during a busy month, that doesn’t need to add extra stress to the day. So if you happen to be looking for an ultra-easy appetizer to serve (or bring along!) to holiday parties this year, here's one that works for me and you might like. You need just three simple ingredients, ten minutes of your time and it's easy-peasy to prepare. I had a quick poke around the fridge and my cabinets to see what I could serve with it and found a few nice apples and thus, this delicious idea was born. This Ten-Minute Caramel Apple Baked Brie recipe is super-easy to make with just Four ingredients, and it's the perfect appetizer for any party. But since then I've expanded the theme and made something equally delicious with other fruits such as cranberries, raspberries and Kiwis. Come up with your own ideas and have fun.

Ingredients: 1 wheel Happy Farms brie (but any wheel will do) 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans 1/3 cup caramel sauce, homemade or storebought 3 apples, cored and sliced

I just popped the wheel of brie on a baking sheet, sprinkled on some chopped walnuts that was also handy and baked it up in the oven until it was nice and warm and melty. And then while the brie was baking, I chopped up a bunch of fresh apples into slices. Once it was ready to go, I drizzled some caramel sauce over it, that we'd not used since the summer, which you can find in the baking or ice cream topping section or any major store.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper. Place brie on the baking sheet, and sprinkle the chopped walnuts evenly on top of the brie. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the brie is warmed through and starts to ooze out a bit. Cut up your apples while the brie is warming. Remove from heat, and drizzle the caramel sauce on top of the brie. Serve immediately with apples for dipping.

By Keith Nicol UK based Road Safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is urging drivers to make safety their priority this Christmas and not to take any risks with alcohol. The advice comes as official figures show there has been no decline in the number of people killed through drinkdriving in recent years. An average of 240 people are killed in the UK through drink-driving each year, a figure that has remained unchanged since 2010 (source: Department for Transport). GEM road safety officer Neil Worth commented: “It is unacceptable that drink-drive deaths have not reduced. The time is now absolutely right for a reduction in the limit, which we believe will give a strong and clear message to anyone still willing to take a risk by drinking and then driving.” Latest UK Government figures show there were more than 607,000 breath tests conducted in England and Wales (2014), of which 67,000 were positive or refusals. The legal limit in England and Wales is 35 micrograms (μg) of alcohol in 100ml of breath. In Scotland the limit changed in December

2014 and is now 22μg. This is equivalent to a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.8 in England and Wales and 0.5 in Scotland. The penalty for a first drinkdriving offence is a minimum 12-month ban, a fine of up to £2,500, and even a prison sentence of up to six months. Refusal to provide a specimen carries the same penalty. Neil Worth continued: “Don’t ever take a risk with drink-driving. If you’re going out for a few drinks,

New Ancient City Discovered The BBC report that archaeologists in Egypt have unearthed what they describe as a city that dates back more than 7,000 years, containing houses, tools, pottery and huge graves. It lies by the river Nile, close to the Temple of Seti the First in Abydos. Experts say the size of the 15 newly discovered graves indicates the high social standing of those buried. It is believed the city was home to important officials and tomb builders and would have flourished during early-era ancient Egyptian times.

Ray's Rant: A Changing Europe By Ray Kearney What strange times we live in now. Everything is so different. In the mid 70’s we were so happy to be part of Europe. We had an identity which was more out-going, liberating and less steeped in traditional (biased) history. We became more cosmopolitan, more tolerant, more openminded, and more European. During the first 3½ decades as Europeans we enjoyed a surge in personal wealth, improved infrastructure and a buoyant economy. The downside of the EEC (EU) was inflation with supermarket prices increasing daily and the huge increase in the cost of property. As time went by countries like Ireland seemed to embrace their new European identity, maybe to escape the rigid intolerances of previous decades, so the Irish became model Europeans. They shed, not only their catholic leprechaun image but they saw Europe as a means to drop the imperialistic ways of their British dominated past. Along with the UK they accepted monetary decimalisation and dropped pounds, shillings and pence, pints and gallons were replaced by litres. The Irish readily accepted kilos instead of pounds and kilometres instead of miles. Road signs were changed at the first opportunity to accommodate European ways. Here is where the differences began; the British hierarchy were slow to move away from the “institutions” of their imperial past. After centuries of Britain imposing their rule on “the colonies” they became uncomfortable with the new European

ways. The British government refused to move from their imperial miles, inches and pounds. Then they resisted joining the Euro. They blamed Europe for their immigration problems even though the 1960’s were fraught with these problems (ref. Enoch Powell). The UK had input into the laws and policies of Europe but in 2016, in a very unfair way, Europe was blamed for the immigration problems of the UK. The changes that the “leave” voters have inflicted on their “remain” countrymen/women are confusing and unclear. Nobody can tell the future. To be fair and clear, the British Government did not impose leaving Europe on the British people but since the referendum they have embraced it with reckless imperialistic fervour last seen in the Falkland’s war. Right and wrong, misinformation and accuracy seems to be totally irrelevant to them. Alternate options don’t seem to get a second

glance. Businesspeople, lawmakers and elected MP’s in parliament are ignored. Is the “charge of the light brigade” the model being used by the current British government? There are some things we can predict if government bull-headedness is not checked. It will certainly be more difficult for British people to live abroad than before. UK inflation will increase due to the weakness of the pound sterling. Travel and holiday costs will increase. The value of a British pension will plummet. Pensioners have already lost 20% of their pensions, seriously affecting living standards. British expats will be unable to stand or vote in local elections ending the influence of parties like Claro unless they join with a Spanish party where they can have some influence. Meanwhile Irish eyes are smiling and looking forward to their Scottish and Northern Irish cousins finding a way to stay European.

White Christmas By Bing Crosby Album: Christmas Carols Released: 1942 This 8-line song that paints a picture of holiday nostalgia was written by Irving Berlin for the 1942 movie Holiday Inn, where Bing Crosby sings it from the perspective of a New Yorker stranded in sunny California during Christmas. Crosby recorded a version of the song for release as a single with the Kim Darby Singers and the John Scott Trotter Orchestra on May 29, 1942 - a few months before the movie hit theatres. At the advice of Bing's record producer Jack Kapp, this original first verse was excised as it made no sense outside of the context of the film. Now starting with the familiar, "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas," the song became a huge hit, going to #1 on the Billboard chart (measuring sales) in October, and staying in the top spot for 11 weeks, taking it through the first two weeks of 1943. This won the Academy Award for Best Song of 1942. A perennial seller for an entire generation, the song is by far the biggest-selling Christmas song of all time. The original Drifters with Clyde McPhatter as their lead vocalist recorded their Doo-Wop version in November 1953. It hit #2 on the R&B

charts in 1954, and made the Pop charts in 1955. The deep bass-tenor voice you hear on this version was Bill Pinkney, who was an early member of the group. By 1954, this song was a holiday favourite, and that year Paramount Pictures released a movie called White Christmas to tie in with it. Crosby starred in the film along with Danny Kaye, and of course performed his famous song. Elvis Presley recorded this song in 1957 along with other holiday standards for his Elvis' Christmas Album. Most songwriters dream of having Elvis record their songs, but Irving Berlin spoke out against the King's cover, calling it a "profane parody of his cherished yuletide standard" and claiming that his staff was ordered to call radio stations and ask them not to play it. There's a chance that Berlin was simply drumming up publicity for his song, as there was nothing all that offensive about the Elvis version, and The Drifters had already done an R&B version. Elvis doing Christmas songs did rub some people the wrong way, but much of the controversy was

manufactured, helping Elvis' Christmas Album stay at #1 for an amazing five weeks in late 1957 and early 1958. Phil Spector put this as the first track on his 1963 Christmas album A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector, which was unfortunately released on November 22, 1963 - the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Spector had Darlene Love sing this one, and he used many of his favorite Los Angeles session musicians on the album, including a then unknown Cher. The sessions were notoriously difficult, with Cher explaining, "Philip was just insane about the Christmas album. We just never left the studio. I mean, you went home to take a shower, you came back. We didn't go home for six weeks, we just were there. I had just turned 17, and I'm thinking, How are all these old people doing this? I am dying, I can hardly drag myself outta bed. How are these old guys doing it?" Lady Gaga recorded a jazzy version for her 2011 A Very Gaga Holiday EP. Her take includes an original verse in which she jokes, "O.K., I suppose it's not very white outside yet." Many popular artists have recorded this song, but since 1963, only one has charted in the US: Michael Bolton. He make #73 with his 1992 rendition. Andy Williams released this song on his very first Christmas album (there were eight total), The Andy Williams Christmas Album in 1963, which also debuted his own enduring holiday classic "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year." His version of "White Christmas" also became the #1 selling Christmas single that year.

My main genres are Pop, Rock and Roll, Irish and Country. How did you start in the business? I've always loved singing since my school days and I used to sing in trad sessions back in Ireland. I got thrown in at the deep end one evening covering a karaoke night and loved it so I started learning from there. After a lot of encouragement from friends, family and other entertainers I got the confidence to do it for a living. What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? I qualified as a photographer about ten years ago so I would be taking photos of entertainers as that is what I did before. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? Freddie Mercury and Tina Turner are my absolute musical heroes, in general I tend to look at performers who have been around a long time and whose music is still as popular as ever. But for the type entertainer I am, I look to the likes of Philomena Begley, Mary Black and Nathan Carter for inspiration. I started out doing pop, with a bit of soft rock and Motown mixed in there, but Irish Country and the Show bands are very popular in the part of Ireland that I’m from and I grew up

listening to that style so it seemed the natural route for me to take. I was very lucky that my parents have such varied tastes in music that I was exposed to lots of different influences. Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? I used to be terrified when I first started out, but the more I worked the more confident I became. I still get a healthy dose of nerves though which just makes me work harder to give a better performance. What was your best moment? I couldn't pick out a best moment as I absolutely love what I do, but when the audience get up dancing, or when a person thanks you because you sang something which is special to them, that is a fantastic feeling. I also get to see hear some fantastic singers when hosting karaoke, I even had some of the cast of Cats at a gig a few weeks ago. I also love surprising family and friends when they come to visit as most of them never heard me sing before. What has been your worst moment? When I was starting out so many things went wrong with my gear it was terrifying and it could have made me think twice about this as a career but it had the opposite affect and made me work harder and it improved my performance as I had to learn how to communicate well with the audience.

What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? Look after your voice and your gear and work hard putting the preparation into your gigs. Vary your repertoire and play to the audience, to make sure they are enjoying it. A lot of entertainers play the same sets over and over, and no matter how good you are it becomes boring for a regular audience, but I’m constantly learning new songs and I have never played the same set twice. As for Karaoke it takes a lot of guts for some people to get up and sing in public so give them lots of encouragement so they enjoy the experience and want to do it again. Also enjoy yourself and remember how lucky you are to be doing a job you love. Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? A. Loads of funny things have happened on the karaoke nights. When I first started out a friend of mine was singing a tune but the track sounded strange and slowed down and sped up of its own accord, the poor fella kept singing in sync with the track and sang high pitched when the track sped up and deepened his voice when it slowed down, we couldn't have planned it if we tried. The whole bar was in stitches but he turned to me at the end and said 'its ok I don't think anyone noticed'. Everyone had tears running down their face laughing. Tell us about yourselves My name is Damien and I am originally from Ireland where I spent over 30 years as a college lecturer in engineering and construction. I own and run the Auld Dubliner bar in Lomas Cabo Roig and have been living in Spain for 4 years.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu? Going back to last summer our chef did a lovely steak pie with chips. It was basic but really tasty.

What made you open a bar? The opportunity arose to buy a well-established business along with my brother-in-law so we went for it. 2 years ago he wanted to move on so I continued alone. Now it is me plus my loyal staff Catherine, Donall and Rain. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? Well I may be ‘auld’ but I’m not from Dublin. However the bar was already long-established and was wellknown by that name so I saw no reason to change it. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? At this time (winter) we are just doing sandwiches and snacks.

Favourite day of the week? At this time of year definitely Saturday as there is so much going on. We show sports during the afternoon, including premier league football then in the evening we have karaoke with our resident host Sammy Starr. Always good fun. There

are a couple of things I should add. One is that one of our staff members, Rain O’Connor, is a brilliant singer and entertainer in her own right and regularly hosts karaoke and entertainment nights here in the summertime. Leading on from that we step up the entertainment considerably during the summer months providing live entertainment or karaoke 7 nights a week in high season. This year we hope to include musical theme nights once a month or so; such as country nights, songs from films and musicals etc. Any interesting tales? Well despite the fact that we are very popular with

holidaymakers during the summer we are first and foremost a community bar catering for the residents in our area. We are used to some of our regulars having loads to drink (always behaving themselves I must add) and then stumbling out having forgotten to pay their bar bill. We never worry because we always know they’ll be back - anxiously asking if they’ve forgotten to pay. The amusing thing is that sometimes they come back in the next day apologizing for forgetting to settle up and then hearing us tell them that it was ok as they actually HAD paid the night before. One of our summer residents comes in every day for breakfast. “Breakfast” consists, without fail, of a Smirnoff Ice followed by 2 Sambuca’s. Amazing thing is he never seems to get drunk!

Andrew Sachs dies at 86

The actor, Andrew Sachs, who starred as hapless Spanish waiter Manuel in the beloved 1970s sitcom Fawlty Towers, passed away in a care home last week. He died at the age of 86, according to reports.

Fawlty Towers ran for two series between 1975 and 1979. His wife Melody said he had been diagnosed with vascular dementia four years ago, but his condition had rapidly deteriorated in the days before his death. "My heart has been broken every day for a long time," Mrs Sachs told the Daily Mail. "It wasn't until the very end that it got very bad. He couldn't speak because he had vascular dementia that means that you lose your speech but you don't lose your mind."

Sachs was born in Berlin in 1930, and his family moved to England when he was eight years old to escape the Nazi persecution of Jews. His wife of 57 years, Melody, cared for him throughout his illness. They had three children. Comedian Sir Tony Robinson, who starred in Blackadder, wrote on Twitter: "So sad that Andrew Sachs has died. A true friend and a kindred spirit. I still have the wonderful baby pictures he took of my children. RIP." And Samuel West, whose mother Prunella Scales starred alongside Sachs in Fawlty Towers, said: "Creator of one of our most beloved EU migrants. Such warmth and wit; impossible to think of him without smiling." On 25 October 2008, the BBC apologised to Sachs and his

agent after they had been informed that comedian Russell Brand and presenter Jonathan Ross had made several obscene phone calls to Sachs during an episode of The Russell Brand Show recorded on 16 October and broadcast two days later, on which Sachs had agreed to appear. Both presenters had left explicit messages on Sachs' telephone answering

machine stating that Russell Brand had had sex with his granddaughter, Georgina Baillie (a member of Burlesque dance group Satanic Sluts Extreme). Gordon Brown, then the Prime Minister, criticised Ross and Brand's actions, saying that it was "clearly inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour", and the television watchdog, Ofcom, launched an inquiry into the matter. Afterwards, Brand and Controller of Radio 2 Lesley Douglas resigned, with Ross soon suspended. In February 2014, Sachs was interviewed by the BBC about his autobiography. He spoke of how the

scandal still affects him. Sachs has also said that the calls caused a family rift and that Sachs and his wife rarely talk to Georgina. At the time, Sachs told reporters he did not want to take the matter to the police, adding: "These two are performers, I'm a performer, and sometimes it goes very wrong and it's up to them to do better." On his role of Manuel, Sachs said in 2014: "It was just a part I was playing and people seemed to laugh." Manuel's most famous line in the 12-episode sitcom was "I know nothing" and the waiter was regularly hit by John Cleese's character, Basil Fawlty. "I never got upset when he hit me," Sachs said in 2014. "He's my friend, I must say yes, yes [it hurt], several times, more than once."

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a common life-long health condition. There are 3.5 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and an estimated 549,000 people who have the condition, but don’t know it. Diabetes is a condition where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly.

This is because your pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin, or not enough insulin, to help glucose enter your body’s cells – or the insulin that is produced does not work properly (known as insulin resistance). Insulin is the hormone produced by the pancreas that allows glucose to enter the body’s cells, where it is used as fuel for energy so we can work, play and generally live our lives. It is vital for life. Glucose comes from digesting carbohydrate and is also produced by the liver. If you have diabetes, your body cannot make proper use of this glucose so it builds up in the blood and can’t be used as fuel.

There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes develops when glucose can’t enter the body’s cells to be used as fuel. This happens when either: There is no insulin to unlock the cells (Type 1): There is not enough insulin or the insulin is there but not working properly (Type 2).

In Type 1 diabetes the body is unable to produce any insulin so there is no key to unlock the door, and the glucose builds up in the blood. The body can't use glucose to provide energy and tries to get it from elsewhere and starts to break down stores of fat and protein instead. This can cause weight loss. Because the body doesn’t use the glucose it ends up passing into the urine. Nobody knows for sure why these insulin-producing cells have been destroyed, but the most likely cause is the body having an abnormal reaction to the cells. This may be triggered by a virus or other infection.

Spotting Type 1 diabetes in children

The End Of Castro's Cuba

The former Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro passed away on Saturday bringing with it mixed emotions: tears in the streets of Havana and dancing in the streets of Miami. During his lifetime he survived more than 600 assassination attempts, went head to head with ten US presidents and shaped half a century of history. Fidel Castro turned 90 this year although he handed over the reins of power to his brother Raul more than a decade ago due to his ill health. The final years took their toil on the father of the Cuban Revolution. His long black beard turned to grey and apart from very rare appearances n public, he also gave up smoking his iconic Cohiba cigars, which he long been photographed with over the last sixty years.

Fabian Escalante. Castro once told Spanish journalist Ignacio Ramonet he nearly always carried his Browning pistol just in case. "I was so impressed! I could only look at his face and say, 'I love him,'" says Mercedes Gonzalez, 59, who has only seen Castro twice up close. But she says she felt an overpowering attraction.

No one, least of all the US Government, could have predicted his place in history. He first made headlines in 1953 with a botched attack on Cuba's Moncada military barracks. The 26-yearold lawyer was captured and jailed for the failed raid, which ended with dozens of rebels killed or executed by dictator Fulgencio Batista's forces. Just six years later, Castro was triumphantly rolling into Havana, having returned from exile to lead a guerrilla army that once numbered just 12 men to defeat Batista and his military of 80,000.

Castro defined himself in opposition to the American "empire," and the resentment lingers to this day. He held his tongue when his successor Raul and US President Barack Obama announced a historic rapprochement in 2014 -- his younger brother's latest move to slowly reopen the Communist island. Weeks later, he gave his lukewarm blessing. But after Obama visited Cuba last March, Castro lashed out, telling Cubans not to be fooled by the US president's "syrupy words."

This unlikely victory brought with it the era known as the Cold War as Castro sided with the Soviet Union to create the "red menace" of Communism right on the doorstep of the United States. So worried were the US that the USSR might have a found a base for Necular weapons within easy striking distance of the USA, that the Central Intelligence Agency and Cuban exiles tried to assassinate Castro 634 times: as estimated by his former chief of intelligence,

With his rugged rebel look and imposing persona, Castro has long fascinated people, and women in particular. "He projects a very attractive public image," says Salomon Susi, the author of a 'Dictionary of Fidel Castro's Thoughts.' "It's part of his legend." Officially, Castro has been married twice and fathered seven children by three women. Rumours of secret affairs and more children abound.

He recalled the island's long enmity with the US, including Washington's backing for the failed invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs in 1961. His bitterness over that botched CIA plot played a part in pushing the world to the brink of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis the following year, when the Soviet Union agreed to his request to send ballistic missiles to Cuba. He opened his half-century of iron-fisted rule in 1959 by jailing one of his own guerrilla

commanders, Huber Matos, for 20 years when he criticized the new regime's turn toward Communism. Hundreds of thousands of Cubans fled the island, mostly to the United States, to escape repression and poverty. Castro had a penchant for trying to pull off the seemingly impossible. In 1961, he all but eradicated illiteracy with an ambitious rural education campaign. When the exodus of Cuban exiles left the country with just 3,000 doctors, he vowed to make the island a "medical superpower." Today it has 88,000 doctors and one of the most respected health systems in the world. Other projects were less successful. In 1970, with Cuba's economy strangled by the US embargo, he ordered a nationwide campaign to harvest a record-shattering 10 million tons of sugar. Despite mobilizing Cubans en masse to work the fields, the campaign failed. Cubans are all too used to "Fidel Plans" that never quite pan out, like the ones to raise buffalo or turn Cuba into a world-class cheese producer despite a shortage of cows. As Castro gave his speech proclaiming the triumph of the revolution in 1959, a white dove landed on his shoulder. The man had officially become the myth. In a country where Catholicism blends with African religions, Cubans said that Castro was protected by Obatala, the most powerful of the "orisha" divinities. Some had thought him immortal, until a health crisis forced him to give up power in 2006. But he survived for more than a decade longer than most observers thought. Last April, however, a frail Castro seemed to say goodbye with a couple of public appearances and at the time said: "Soon I'll be like all the rest. Everyone's turn comes." His turn came on Saturday.

Whether it is the aesthetics, noise, tyres, engines and even how the drivers will cope, here's what you can expect from Formula 1 in 2017. In what is possibly the first time F1 has made aesthetics a central pillar of future regulations, 2017's cars are set to look more "aggressive" thanks to regulations to make them wider, heavier and run on fatter tyres. Wings will also be wider, with the rear wing lower than it is currently. How much faster will the cars be? The FIA claim substantial gains of five to six seconds are expected in 2017 through the "aerodynamic rules evolution, wider tires and reduction of car weight", though many believe the improvement may not be as drastic. The natural rate of F1 development already means the current 2016 cars are even faster than last year's, with track records set in Bahrain and Austria among others despite the smaller-capacity V6 engines, while Nico Rosberg's pole time at the Hungarian GP was more than two seconds under 2015's benchmark. It's been a trend all season. Will overtaking improve? While the decrease in lap times and increase in down force is likely to make the cars more challenging for drivers, few believe the changes will do anything to alleviate F1's overtaking issues -

and some fear the age-old problem of cars being able to follow each other closely will only get worse. "The truism is that the more down force you've got on the car the more you're going to be affected by the wake of another car," said Symonds. Which in turn will mean the drivers will have to be physically fitter to take them to the limit? But there are also those who believe racing will improve next season. And it's not just Alonso at McLaren, team principal Eric Boulder has also given his backing. "The car will generate more down force from the tyres, so mechanically, which should not hurt the overtaking numbers," he said. "Additionally, the influence of the front wing will be lower, since the floor and the diffuser will generate more down force, allowing more overtaking. "All this makes the car allow more overtaking manoeuvres, maybe by 5 per cent, as all current

What's the plan with tyres? With Formula 1 intent on increasing down force, plans have long been in place to make the tyres wider to increase mechanical grip. Customer costs was one of the biggest issues when it came to engines and power unit supply costs will be reduced by 1m Euros in 2017 compared to this year's price and by a further 3m Euros in 2018. What will the cars look like? All the Teams have kept their car design under wraps but it is possible they may look like this.

Since Hasdrubal founded it in 227 BC, this city has lived through great moments of splendour becoming one of the most important Roman cities plus being the capital of the Byzantine province of Spania, and also facing hard times of decadence, especially in the Middle Ages. Those who prefer to enjoy nature, to observe the landscape and to discover its surroundings, have the possibility to walk along the numerous paths that run around the city. In addition, Cartagena is an ideal place for family outings, such as in the tourist boat that goes around the lighthouses of Curra and Navidad, the Algameca Chica and the island of Escombreras. Or the tourist bus that runs through the historic and commercial centre of the city as well as the renovated seaside promenade. For many years, the electricity company IBERDROLA, through its distribution company, has issued invoices to its customers for exorbitant amounts. They have accused some customers of having manipulated their electrical meter counter to read a lesser amount than their actual electrical consumption; thus avoiding paying higher chargers, than the one paid. Iberdrola practices a policy of 'subjective regularisation', taking into account the supposed consumption of electricity that they think you should have made during the period in which the consumer has supposedly carried out the manipulation of the meter. In most cases these invoices are accompanied by a very brief report of a technical inspector, carried out without prior notice to the consumer so that they can’t be present during the inspection and making it impossible for them to be able to check the reality of this situation. Thus, the consumer, even though they are totally uninformed of the rights that they have by Iberdrola, is placed in a position of submission based on what is stated in the technical report. Clients have to face paying higher charges, against their will, and pay whatever amount that

Iberdrola has decided to impose at its discretion, because the non-payment of the bill entails cutting off their electricity supply and thus depriving clients of their basic needs. Thus the client is guilty until proven innocent. Faced with this situation, the consumer tries by all possible means to contact the electricity company for an explanation of their bill and, above all, to see for themselves the 'clear evidence' of the accusation made against them. Phone calls to the company are eternal: they pass you through one operator to another, they just say that the information presented in the invoice is what they have on their computer, thus avoiding proving a real answer to the question. They do not give you any way to amend the situation or to prove a means to prove otherwise; they just recommend that you pay the invoice or to go court. The electric company acts in a totally authoritarian way, granting the consumer a deadline to pay the invoice, while warning that otherwise the supply will be cut. What is significant is that the contract holder is accused by the company without any evidence and they are considered guilty of manipulated their Electric Meter until proven otherwise. Surprisingly, Iberdrola issue bills for the amount of 2,500€, or higher, which forces the consumer, if they want to protest and to appeal the invoice, to go to court.To do so they require the assistance of a lawyer and be represented by a court prosecutor, with a high cost for legal fees. In addition to this, you are forced to

WHAT IS THE PRESCRIPTION OF TRAFFIC TICKETS? By Andreu & Alenda Lawyers Prescription is the legal figure by virtue of which, for a period of time (set by the law in each case): when a 'right' is lost. The time to exercise a 'right' expires. It is when the administration loses the right to claim a payment of a traffic ticket as the time has passed. In this case, the administration is the Dirección General de Tráfico (General Traffic Directorate), City Halls or other public bodies are capable to impose fines. When do traffic tickets expire? The term to execute economical fines expires after four years of its imposition. If the fine is of any

other nature, it expires after one year (RDLeg 339/1990 Article 92.4). In both cases, the limitation period begins to count from the day after the Administration declares the sanction to be final (it cannot be appealed).

How is the prescription period calculated? The limitation period begins to count from the day after the traffic ticket cannot be appealed and it is considered firm. However, this period may be interrupted. The limitation period may be interrupted by administrative activity held by the competent body to claim that fine. This means that as long as the Administration is working on your file, for example, trying to get the accused off the fine, through notifying them by all means, the counting of the term stops. The countdown starts again the day after the Administration leaves the file paralysed and does nothing with it. The prescription penalises the administration for their inactivity. So sometimes, citizens are lucky and the administrations forgets about them.

Debt Collection Recovery Companies By Andreu & Alenda Solicitors Do I have a debt? Who is claiming that debt from me? Am I enrolled in a debtorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s registry? Will my salary and my assets be seized? Who else knows that I am in this situation? These and other questions are those that are constantly made by people who receive several letters in their post and numerous telephone calls per day from those commonly known in Spain as "Recovery Companies" or in the UK as 'Debt Collection Agencies'. This is done in order to frighten and upset the daily life of an alleged debtors to achieve the refund of a debt. These are usually small debts, such as associated with typical household suppliers, such as telephone, gas, water, television, or small bank debts. These companies take over the debt and become the new creditor because the main company transferred them the credit and the necessary data to claim the debt, but without the express consent of debtor to this transfer of their personal and private information. After a first contact between the parties, the debtor receives a letter explaining the existence of a debt and in which it is said that if the payment is made within the stipulated period, they will lower the debt. At this point, the debtor does not know with whom to communicate to carry out the subsequent steps. To avoid fraud, it is important to ask the creditor to inform us about the debt that they are claiming, when it was contracted and the

amount demanded. This is to be sure that the information is correct and to be able to negotiate how the payment will be made. There have been cases in which the recovery companies try to collect a debt that has already been paid, or a debt that is prescribed (we talked about this in a previous article about prescription, see Edition 607: www.thecoastrider.com) or even claim an amount higher than the principal owed. Often the amount of these debts is not very high and the debtor just pays them off to prevent the continuation of the numerous calls and letters, even though you do not have any agreement with them. However, in many cases you can avoid payment to such third parties by simply contracting a lawyer. These Debt Collection Agencies use procedures that could be classified as reprehensible and even illegal, starting from the moment they have access to your personal data. This implies a direct violation of the rights protected by Organic Law 15/1999, of December 13, on the Protection of Personal Data, since the calls are not only made to the alleged debtor, but extend to the family environment, to friends and even the workplace. In these calls, the company not only do not identify themselves correctly, but they are not worried if the person they are speaking to, is or is not, the actual debtor. They then provide all the information that they have regardless the call receiver. This constitutes a violation of the right to privacy of personal and family living, directly

impacting your right to privacy and affecting your honour and your own image. This cascade of calls is linked to a series of constraints and even threats in which the receiver is made to believe that the default of the debt will cause it to be included in a debtors' registry that is accessible by all financial institutions. They imply that financial institutions will make a study of your solvency and to proceed to attach any debt to your property and salary until the collection of the amount takes place. Some Motoring Advice For Visitors To Spain By David Hudson Last Week on the Spanish National TV programme, the 'Anna Rosa Show' on Telecinco, I saw a video of a women who was trapped trying to drive under a bridge in Segunto, Valencia. As the water rose halfway up her driver's door, thus stopping her ability to open it, she wound the window down and climbed out on to the roof taking her bag with her. As she stood on the roof of the car it started to sink. Within minutes the car disappeared under the water with the lady standing on the roof as spectators looking on helplessly. Then the fire engine arrived and the rescue began and using a line the firemen, they managed to fight their way against the current and the women climbed onto the shoulders of one of the firemen and was carried to safety. She was very gutsy and agile and as the water did not look very deep it had seemed safe for her to drive through. Afterwards she complained that the police had not put out warning signs! The depth of water can be deceiving so if in doubt get out onto high ground. When it rains heavily, water can rise very quickly; which reminds me of one night when I went to bed at midnight to dry and clear skies. I was woken at 1.30am by my Spanish neighbour banging on the door shouting “Agua! Agua!”. Rain water had covered three steps on to my patio. Running to my Seat 600 in my pyjamas, I opened the car door and plunged my feet into the water to find the pedals. The engine started first time and I put it in to reverse, then into first and upon reaching high land the engine cut out. The speed that my area was flooded shows how quickly it can happen. If you are in an underground car park and water starts coming in get out quickly and leave the problem to the insurance, not to the undertaker. In this area two pensioners, sleeping in their beds in a second story house, were drowned in their bed as the water rose up the stairs. Also many people have died trapped in their car unable to open the door. A car is not a good boat but somewhere that can trap you. For those returning to visit their relatives or coming here for a winters break,there are a few laws you should know about. For instance, it is illegal to drive for more than two hours or 200 kms. without a stop. This will not take effect until there is an accident where, if this can be proved, then the least you would receive is a fine for dangerous driving, This is a sensible law, even though some drivers think it would slow them down unnecessarily but when I have been driving my

In Germany and Scandinavia, on a certain date, all vehicles must change to winter tyres and if you are involved in an accident without winter tyres then the insurance will not pay out. The same applies to incorrect tyre tread and not having a current car tax or MOT in the UK. Each Country have their own rules. Trafico has advertised on Television that it is safer to wear sunglasses in the strong Spanish sun. In the winter you can come across blinding sun that can hit you suddenly and I think this is sensible advice. Remember that in Spain children under 1.35m tall, and not in an approved child seat could see the driver being fined 200€ and the vehicle immobilised. Children between 1.35m & 1.50m must be secured correctly, making sure the diagonal belt sits across the chest and not across the neck. If necessary use a bolster cushion to adjust the height of the child to eliminate any

danger. If the child is sitting in the front seat, the airbag may cause injury, so it should be immobilised. Rear facing child seats are illegal here and only authorised child seats are permitted. It is illegal to do a three point turn in Spain on a carriageway but if you have to execute a 'U turn'. the correct way to carry it out is to pull onto the hard shoulder off the carriageway, allowing free flow of the traffic behind you. Then when the traffic flow is safe enough you can execute a 'U turn'. The VADO signs mean that only the registered vehicle can park in front of it - you will receive a fine and possibly have your vehicle impounded if you ignore it. EMERGENCY NUMBER is 112 and can be obtained on any type of telephone and the operator will be able to speak your language. IF THERE IS AN ACCIDENT in an out of the way place, by law you should stop to lend assistance. DO NOT MOVE THE PERSON unless it is necessary BUT CALL 112. If you do move the person or do major first aid, then you may be responsible for anything that happens to the person afterwards, whether it is your fault or not. A STOP Line or Sign means just that in Spain. So do not creep over the line as you will be fined for dangerous driving. Hogging the overtaking lane or middle lane on multi lane carriageways will also be classed as dangerous driving, especially if you are driving a right hand vehicle. The Spanish return to the inside lane after overtaking for this reason. In 2014 a special law for foreign residents now obligate those that have Spanish residencia to change any vehicle they own in Spain, onto Spanish plates. This now clears up any grey areas that some foreigners tried to use to prevent them having to pay to get their vehicle onto Spanish registration. I have seen a large number of illegal UK registered vehicles in Los Montesinos recently so maybe the National Police will start ticketing drivers there, to get their practice in on booking foreign registered vehicles. This will be good for those who abide by the law because being illegal could mean that their insurance will not pay out if they are involved in an accident. Android Phones Open To Hacking Another good reason that you may wish to invest that little extra in an iPhone has just surfaced. First the war of the 7's came to nothing with Apple's iPhone 7 being announced the winner by a knockout as the offering from Samsung decided to self-destruct, costing the South Korean company billions in lost revenue and maybe more in credibility. This week US company Kryptowire has identified several models of Android mobile devices that contained firmware that collected sensitive personal data about their users and transmitted this sensitive data to third-party servers without disclosure or the users' consent. These devices were available through major US-based online retailers (Amazon, BestBuy, for example) and included popular smartphones such as the BLU R1 HD. The core of the monitoring activities took place using a commercial Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update software system that was shipped with the Android devices we tested and were managed by a company named Shanghai Adups Technology Co. Ltd. These devices actively transmitted user and device information including the full-body of text messages, contact lists, call history with full telephone numbers, unique device identifiers including the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI). The firmware that shipped with the mobile devices and subsequent updates allowed for the remote installation of applications without the users' consent and, in some versions of the software, the transmission of fine-grained device location information. The firmware could identify specific users and text messages matching remotely defined

keywords. The firmware also collected and transmitted information about the use of applications installed on the monitored device, bypassed the Android permission model, executed remote commands with escalated (system) privileges, and was able to remotely reprogram the devices. In September 2016, Adups claimed on its web site to have a world-wide presence with over 700 million active users, and a market share exceeding 70% across over 150 countries and regions with offices in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Tokyo, New Delhi, and Miami. The Adups web site also stated that it produces firmware that is integrated in more than 400 leading mobile operators, semiconductor vendors, and device manufacturers spanning from wearable and mobile devices to cars and televisions. The data collection and transmission capability is spread across different applications and files. The data transmission occurred every 72 hours for text messages and call log information, and every 24 hours

for other PII data. The information was transmitted to the following back-end server domains: As smartphones are ubiquitous and, in many cases, a business necessity, our findings underscore the need for more transparency at every stage of the supply chain. Kryptowire has developed tools aimed at detecting software that can violate privacy and security policies that are not necessarily classified as malware. In many cases, these applications are benign, but exhibit behaviour that is non-compliant with

organizational, industry, government policies.

"Who pays when a driverless car crashes?" Cars of the future will need to collect a basis set of data so insurers can determine who was in control of the vehicle at the time – the driver or the car? One of the key challenges for the future of automated driving will be determining where liability rests in the event of an accident with an automated car. A crucial part of making sure claims are settled fairly will be to understand who was in control of the vehicle at the time – the driver or the car? According to Peter Shaw, Chief Executive at Thatcham Research:“Future legislation needs to protect the consumer so that in the event of an accident, responsibility and who pays can be quickly determined.Was it driver error or a failure of the automated driving system?This can only happen if their insurer has access to key data about the crash.We would like to see car manufacturers and legislators working together with the

insurance industry to develop a framework to make this happen.” British insurers are leading efforts to have a standard set of data agreed at an international level which would be easily accessible in the event of an accident involving a highly automated vehicle. This would include an indication of whether the vehicle was operating autonomously or not, and what technology was in use. Shaw continues:“It’s in everyone’s interests to be able to establish the facts quickly and the proposals for standardised data being put forward by UK insurers would achieve this.” This information would be used to: establish liability for anything that had gone wrong inform emergency services’ investigations ensure insurance claims could be processed promptly help vehicle manufacturers improve their products On occasions where faulty technology was shown to have caused an accident insurers should be able to recover the costs from the manufacturer the ABI says, helping keep insurance premiums down. The information insurers want to see universally collected only concerns the autonomous systems and driver interaction – it is not proposed that any information measuring driver performance should be gathered. The data would cover a period from 30 seconds before to 15 seconds after an

incident and is: a GPS record of the time and location of the incident confirmation of whether the vehicle was in autonomous or manual mode if in autonomous mode, whether the vehicle was parking or driving when the vehicle went into autonomous mode, and when the driver last interacted with the system any driver activity such as braking or steering whether the driver’s seat was occupied, and whether the seatbelt was fastened The UN body responsible for vehicle regulations is preparing to impose its own data requirements on motor manufacturers from 2019, which insurers in the UK are hoping to influence for the benefit of motorists. Huw Evans, ABI Director General, said: “Insurance is an increasingly innovative sector, constantly responding to evolving technology. We have created new ways for people to manage their motor insurance via their smart phones, and a service to collate people’s pension savings online is in development. Insurance enables technological advances in other sectors, and we are backing the development of automated cars one hundred per cent. “As part of insurers’ commitment to getting automated cars on the road and dramatically improving road safety, there will need to be basic data easily available to make sure customers are looked after if something goes wrong. This would offer public reassurance by protecting motorists from being incorrectly blamed if something fails with their car, helping police investigations and supporting prompt insurance pay outs.”

Nico Rosberg retires five days after title win World champion Nico Rosberg has announced he has retired from Formula 1 with immediate effect. The 31-year-old German won his first world title on Sunday, beating Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton by finishing second in the final race in Abu Dhabi. "I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right," Rosberg said. Rosberg won nine of this season's 21 grands prix, beating three-time champion Hamilton by five points. "For 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my 'one thing' to become Formula 1 world champion," he added. "Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target. And now I've made it." Rosberg raced in 206 grands prix winning 23 and finishing on the podium 57 times. Rosberg wins F1 championship in Abu Dhabi. Doctors said that one of the six survivors, defender Neto would be able to resume his career, according to the player's father A Brazilian football player who survived a plane crash in Colombia on Monday is recovering and may be able to resume his career, his father says. Helio Hermito Zampier Neto, a 31-year-old defender for Chapecoense, was in a stable condition, doctors said, after surgery on a lung, a knee, a wrist and his head. Five other people survived the crash, which killed 71 people. Colombian officials say evidence is growing that the plane ran out of fuel. Miguel Quiroga, the pilot of the British-made Avro RJ85 aircraft, had been warned by an official at Santa Cruz airport, in Bolivia, where the plane took off, that he might not have enough fuel, Bolivian Deber newspaper said. But, despite the official's concerns, he went ahead with the flight to Medellin. The country's authorities have not yet commented. In a leaked tape, the pilot can be heard warning of a "total electric failure" and "lack of fuel". What we know: The flight missed a planned refuelling stop in Cobija, on the border between Brazil and Bolivia, because the airport did not operate at night, Brazil's O Globo newspaper reported. The pilot had the option to refuel in Bogota, it said, but headed straight to Medellin. Bolivia's President Evo Morales said he would take "drastic measures" to determine who was responsible for the crash. On Thursday, the country's aviation authority suspended the operating licence of charter airline LaMia, which was part-owned by the pilot and two other aviation officials. Colombian police released a video (in Spanish) with the moment crew member Erwin Tumiri was rescued alive. It showed him conscious, screaming for his colleagues. He is in hospital and reports in local media suggest he may be discharged this weekend. The other crew member who survived, Ximena Suarez, was said to be in good condition in hospital. The four other survivors were still in intensive care. Neto's father, Helam, said on Facebook that news of his recovery was giving the family "renewed hope and faith". "My son is getting better and better. He has just undergone surgery on his leg and doctors say he will return to football," he said.
