By Sandra Piddock It’s all systems go for independently produced spy thriller The Cucaracha Club, now that the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has awarded it a 12A certificate. That means the film can now be distributed on general release in cinemas, so the production company can recoup some of the production costs and, more importantly, build the budget for 'The Cucaracha Club 2: The Route of All Evil', which is already written and ready to go into production in the autumn of 2017. The fact that a film has a certificate is not necessarily newsworthy – all films need one, if they are to be shown in cinemas or released on DVD. However, The Cucaracha Club is remarkable on many levels. It’s the first Independent International, English Language, feature film, ever to be made in and around Torrevieja, on Spain’s Costa Blanca; it’s the first film that writer and actor Billie Anthony Gaddess has ever written and produced – along with Philip Routledge: and it’s also a first for director Rai Woods. Despite working for ITN and Ulster Television and working with renowned directors such as John Schlesinger and Clive Donner, Rai has never before directed a full length feature film. He

Reading through all this, it’s difficult to understand how the film ever made it to the certification stage in the first place – a sentiment echoed by The Cucaracha Club’s star Tom Watt, best known as genial barman Lofty Holloway from Eastenders. In an exclusive interview about the making of the film, Tom said: ‘It’s amazing that this film ever got made, and it’s a tribute to the enthusiasm and collective talents of everyone involved that it’s now ready for distribution. Together, we all achieved so much more than any of us could have accomplished individually.’ That’s praise indeed from an actor, writer and producer of Tom’s calibre, and the finished product is well worth watching. The acting is good, the locations are great, and the cinematography is up there with the

didn’t really want to direct this one, but when the original production team pulled out with just five weeks to go before filming was scheduled to start, there wasn’t any other option. Clive Gray set up Siesta Productions Limited to get the film off the ground and in the can. He was also recruited along with Billie as an executive producer – even though neither of them had ever stood behind a camera in earnest. Being actors, they were more used to being in front of it, so they had to learn from Rai – who could call on almost 50 years of broadcasting experience – as they went along.

Going all the way back to such famous films as MASH in 1970 and Mad Max in 1979, The Cucaracha Club is one of the few low budget films to have music specially written for it. Songwriter Peter Taylor from Los Montesinos wrote three songs, which are performed by

Chloe Leigh, Stevie Spit and Verity Jo Spencer Hall. MASH brought fame to Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould, and it was also full of mainly unheard-of actors, so maybe film history could repeat itself here. Now The Cucaracha Club has the coveted BBFC certificate, Siesta Productions are keen to get the film out to audiences all over Europe. The world premiere was in Torrevieja in March 2016, and fittingly, its first public showing is also scheduled to take place in Torrevieja, in February 2017. Look out for The Cucaracha Club at a cinema near you; sometime soon.

‘Carols at Christmas’ at TCF

On Wednesday 14th December, the audience at TCF was treated to a great evening of entertainment.

The music was provided by the brilliant musician, Clyde Sandry; who produced some amazing arrangements for the Christmas Carols; as well as playing a jazzed-up version of ‘We Three Kings’ during a musical interlude. The hilarious ‘News-Watch Special’ sketch (written by Pastor Roy Davies) was performed – in costume – by

Jim and Jean Speakman; with a ‘voice-over’ provided by Bill Connerty. Sra Manoli Flores – president of AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer), was present to receive the 700€ raised from the collection taken during the event.

Along with the various video clips shown, and some final thoughts from Pastor Peter Hall (Pilar de la Horadada); the event was a wonderful way to celebrate the real ‘Reason for the Season’.

Last weekends torrential rain turned to the more profitable onid on Thursday as residents of San Pedro del Pinatar image became known as a municipality "touched" by luck, just fifteen minutes after the start of the Spanish Christmas Lottery drawing. At 9.15am, the mony started to fall on the town as children from the Nazareth Blanco and Joshua Guamán sang the number 59,444, a fourth prize of 200,000€, worth 20,000€ for each ticket held. An hour later, San Pedro del Pinatar was in the money again with a fifth

prize. The two singers of the numbers, Lorena and Nicol, sang the number 22,259, worth 6,000€ to each ticket holder. At that time, the inhabitants of San Pedro were still celebrating the fourth prize and many of those already in the streets could not believe their luck as the fifth prize was announced, worth around 1.5€ million. The winning tickets were sold in the lottery 'The Perolo'. "After last week's storms, the rain of money is a breath of fresh air and joy," said Miguel Angel Zapata, the manager of the establishment, which celebrates its first year of life. In total, they sold 14,000 numbers.

Association of Retired Police Officers (ARPO) Costa Blanca South The Torrevieja Branch was founded under the name of NARPO by a small group of retired Police Officers and their wives to maintain contact with other retired police officers who had settled in and around the Torrevieja area on the Costa Blanca. Since that time, membership has flourished as many more ex-police officers moved to the Spanish sunshine. In April 2005 it was decided to rename the group ARPO thus

removing any confusion that we were an official branch of the UK NARPO organisation. Sean Connery’s Bond with Andalucia

Part I By Bob Yareham Following the publication of an article about the film Robin and Marian, which was made in Spain, it might be worthwhile recalling that Sean Connery has in fact made quite a few films in this country, and especially in Andalucia.

Connery’s love affair with Spain began long before he became James Bond, or anyone else we’ve heard of. Action of the Tiger (1957) was shot during the autumn and winter of 1956 and the spring of 1957 in Guadix, Granada. Guadix, being a flexible kind of place, was Albania this time, in this story about a mercenary rescuing the imprisoned brother of the inevitably attractive girl. Various locations in and around the Sierra Nevada mountain range were used, such as Almuñécar (Punta de la Mona), and the Cuevas (caves) of Guadix, and possibly also Purullena, 6 kilometres from Guadix, an area of many caves, The most recognisable landmark was the castle of La Calahorra, perched baronially on its barren hill, seeming to beckon film-makers, and succeeding over the decades. Sean This story of smugglers and political prisoners didn’t exactly promise a brilliant future for our Sean, who plays a feisty sailor called Mike, although he probably had his eye on some of the local golf courses, where he would later spend quite a lot of his spare time between shooting films and villains. Five years later Connery would work again with the film’s director, Terence Young, this time as Bond, James Bond in Doctor No. For Woman of Straw (1964) Connery worked his way into the Bond tuxedo in this minor film directed by Basil Dearden and starring Gina Lollobrigida, Laurence Harvey and Ralph Richardson, all about whether an old fool (not Connery) and his money are easily separated. The Mallorca location of Artá in the municipality of Capdepera, Cap Vermell, was mainly used. Artá is famous all over the world for its

stunning caves. The headland of Formentor was the scenario of the water skiing scenes. Even in the 60s its cove was known as the ‘English Beach’ because of the large number of tourists and foreign residents there. It would be the only film Connery, who plays the scheming nephew of the rich old fool, made in Spain without treading the soil of Andalucia. With The Hill (1964) Connery opted for a bit of realism and a moustache after so much Bonding, and between shooting Goldfinger and Thunderball, was to be found around Cabo de Gata, Tabernas and Gérgal for five months, shaking but not stirring some authentic Almerian sand from his boots. The film’s main action takes place in a punishment camp, which was built at Dunas de las Amoladeras, near ‘Cortijo Hoya Altica’ and the road that led Connery and fellow prisoners there was located in the Rambla de Tabernas. The ‘hill’ is a punishment hill, constructed using 10,000 feet of tubular steel and over 60 tons of stone and timber. The heat during filming was unbearable despite the 2,000 gallons of pure water that were shipped in for the crew and almost everyone

suffered from dysentery and similar pleasantries. Ian Bannen, the sadist NCO described the desert, water and food as “ghastly”, smelling permanently of fish. Potential tourists will be pleased to know that the area no longer stinks of fish and has some very pleasant hotels (as long as you pay your bill and don’t complain too much).

In You Only Live Twice (1967) the Little Nellie helicopter chase was originally filmed in Japan at Ebino, although it’s mixed in with a plane crash that was filmed in Scotland (perhaps Connery needed to get home to vote for the Scottish Nationalist Party). Unfortunately, during the filming, aerial photographer Johnny Jordon lost a leg to a helicopter rotor. The Japanese authorities wouldn’t allow explosions to be used in the area, which is a natural park, and so the scenes with the helicopter dogfight were completed in the skies above Torremolinos because the scenery appeared to be similar to the producers, although the ground is noticeably more arid when you’re aware of the swap. The film begins in Gibraltar, which is supposed to be Hong Kong, where Bond’s death is faked almost as well as Hong Kong is by not panning too far around to see the recognisable Rock. In a later Bond film, The Living Daylights, Gibraltar would play itself, although Connery would no longer play Bond. Whether Hong Kong or Gibraltar, I don’t think the local authorities would have taken too kindly to somebody being buried at

sea in the middle of the harbour. But then Bond is different, and 007 is always given a decent opportunity to escape capture and death by his enemies, who abandon him in an unpiloted plane in this instalment instead of simply shooting him when he is totally within their power. Shalako (1968) is a film that shows the vast emptiness of the desert of Almeria, even though in the opening scenes, the snow-capped mountains of the verdant Sierra Nevada in Granada can be glimpsed in the background. Another western off the spaghetti conveyor belt filmed around Tabernas in Almeria, the only novelty being that Sean Connery is a cowboy, and is accompanied by Brigette Bardot, whose make up is denser than your average Indian’s war paint. Around the Ramblas de Tabernas they filmed the scenes with the stagecoach full of disloyal guides being attacked and killed by

Indians. In the Rambla de Lanujar they filmed the scene where Shalako, (Moses Zebulon 'Shalako' Carlin to give him his full name) is hiding from the Indians. At Las Salinas he sleeps his siesta, and the hunting party’s camp site is at the beach of Monsul, although no sign of the sea is to be seen. The camp site, situated in a ruined farm building, is in fact the only construction in the whole film, which probably made available a larger budget for all the bullets fired inaccurately at the Indians, who once again are the victims of treatybreaking, fork-tongued white men, but still manage to be the baddies. Eric Sykes adds a surreal touch to the cast as the butler serving formal dinners to the hunting party of toffs in the middle of the wilderness, so sparse that it is a wonder it can feed so many people. By this time Connery was a regular in Almeria’s Hotel Aguadulce, where many international film stars have stayed.

Serves 8-10 Prep time: 30 mins Cooking time: 2 hrs 30 mins (calculating at 30 minutes per kg) Total time: 3 hrs Skill level: Bit of effort Costs: Mid-price Gordon Ramsay's roast turkey recipe is a Christmas favourite. This delicious, easy to make turkey is flavoured with lemon, parsley and garlic. Gordon says: 'This is my favourite way to roast turkey – with a savoury butter under the skin to keep the breast meat moist and flavourful. To ensure both the turkey and pork stuffing are cooked properly, I bake the stuffing separately. Another of my secrets is to rest the turkey for a couple of hours or more. As it relaxes, the juices are re-absorbed, making the meat succulent, tender and easier to carve. It may seem like a long time, but the texture will be improved the longer you leave the turkey to rest. Piping hot gravy will restore the heat.' This recipe takes 3hrs to prepare and cook and serves between 8-10 people. Any leftovers would make a delicious curry the next day! Ingredients 1 free-range turkey, about 5–5.5kg sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 onions, peeled and halved 1 lemon, halved 1 head of garlic, halved horizontally 6 bay leaves olive oil, to drizzle 8 rashers of smoked streaky bacon Lemon, parsley and garlic butter: 375g butter, at room temperature 1 tbsp olive oil

Place the bird in a large roasting tray, breast side up. Spread the rest of the butter all over the skin. Season well with salt and pepper, then drizzle with a little olive oil. (If preparing a day ahead, cover the turkey with foil and refrigerate at this stage.) finely grated zest and juice of 2 small lemons 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed small bunch of flat leaf parsley, leaves only, chopped Give this turkey a seasonal twist by swapping the lemon for orange instead. It'll give your turkey a new lease of life. Method Preheat the oven to 220°C/Gas 7. Meanwhile, prepare the herb butter. Put the butter into a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add the olive oil and mix well. Add the lemon zest and juice, crushed garlic and chopped parsley. Mix well to combine. Remove the giblets from the turkey cavity. Season the cavity well with salt and pepper, then stuff with the onions, lemon, garlic halves and 2 bay leaves. With your hands, loosen the skin on the breast from both ends of the bird so that you will be able to stuff the flavoured butter underneath it, making sure you keep the skin intact. Repeat with the skin on the legs – from the lower side of the breast feel your way under the skin and out towards the leg, loosening the gap. Stuff half the butter mix into the opened spaces under the skin. From the outside of the skin, gently massage the butter around the breasts so that the

Roast the turkey in the hot oven for 10–15 minutes. Take the tray out of the oven, baste the bird with the pan juices and lay the bacon rashers over the breast to keep it moist. Baste again. Lower the setting to 180°C/Gas 4 and cook for about 2½ hours (calculating at 30 minutes per kg), basting occasionally. To test whether your turkey is cooked, insert a skewer into the thickest part of the leg and check that the juices are running clear, rather than pink. As oven temperatures and turkey shapes and sizes vary, it is crucial to check your turkey about 30 minutes before the calculated roasting time. If the juices are pink, roast for another 15 minutes and check again. Repeat as necessary until the turkey is cooked. Transfer the turkey to a warmed platter and remove the parson’s nose, wings and tips of the drumsticks; reserve these for the gravy. Leave the turkey to rest in a warm place for at least 45 minutes; make the gravy in the meantime. Remove the bay leaves from under the skin before carving. A Swiss roll is a very impressive cake and looks quite difficult to make which is why people often shy away from baking them. A homemade Swiss roll is so much nicer than shop bought and they are much easier to make than you might think. This chocolate Swiss roll has an unusual mint buttercream filling which is full of flavour. The mint and chocolate work extremely well together. This cake could be served as a delicious dessert recipe topped with lashings of cream. This recipes takes 50 mins to make and bake and serves 4 people. This chocolate Swiss roll recipe is perfect if you want to bake something a little different, it's great for sharing with a cuppa or can be smothered in custard or served with ice cream for dessert. Ingredients For the sponge: 3 large eggs 100g caster sugar plus a little extra for sprinkling

75g plain flour 25g cocoa powder 15ml hot water For the filling: 75g butter or margarine, softened 175g icing sugar A little milk Add chopped fresh mint to whipped double cream or half whipped cream and natural yoghurt for a less sweet alternative. Method Preheat oven to 220?C/425?F/Fan 200?C/Gas Mark 7. Line a 33.6cm x 22.5cm Swiss roll tin. Put the eggs and the 100g of sugar into a bowl and whisk until very light and creamy. The mixture should be stiff enough to retain the impression of the whisk for a few seconds. Sift together the flour and cocoa powder. Gently fold half the flour into the whisked

mixture using a metal spoon. Fold in the remaining flour, making sure it has all been incorporated and there are no lumps. Stir in the hot water. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, smoothing it over evenly and gently. Bake in the oven for 7 – 9 minutes until well risen, golden brown and spongy. Meanwhile, have ready a sheet of greaseproof or baking parchment and sprinkle on some caster sugar. To make the sponge pliable you can place the paper over a damp tea towel. Turn out the cake quickly onto the paper and trim away the edges. Place a second sheet of paper on top of the sponge and roll it up loosely using the sugared paper underneath as a guide. Leave to cool completely on a cooling rack, covered in the paper. To make the filling: Put the butter or margarine into a bowl, sift the icing sugar and add it gradually with a little milk creaming everything together well until very smooth. When the sponge is completely cold gently unroll it and remove the paper. Carefully spread the sponge with the cream filling, then re-roll.

Granted, certain times of year are more allergen-filled than others, but the truth is, allergy symptoms can hit you in any season - even the holiday season! What's more, the holidays bring unique triggers such as mould from evergreens inside your home, dust from long-stored decorations and food allergens in holiday foods. "When you top off holiday allergens with the hectic pace and stress this time of year can bring, you have a recipe for a very sneeze-filled season," says Dr. Stephen Tilles, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). "No one wants to be a Scrooge during the holidays. With some planning and precautions, it's possible to reduce your exposure to allergens and have a more pleasant season." The ACAAI offers these tips to help navigate the many seasonal triggers you may face during the holidays: Dodging decoration disaster Decorations are meant to make the holiday season bright, but holiday

adornments can harbour allergens. Mould from Christmas trees can trigger sneezing and wheezing. Aromas from scented candles can cause congestion and affect breathing. Decorations stored in attics or garages from year to year can be a home for sneeze-inducing dust mites. Artificial trees, wreaths and garlands can be an alternative to live decorations that host mold. Remove dusty decorations from storage and clean them outside before bringing them indoors. At the end of the season, store them in sealed containers to keep out dust. Avoid using artificial scents like candles and room sprays that can trigger symptoms for people with allergies

and asthma. Instead, fill your home with natural aromas by baking holiday goodies or setting out a dish of unwrapped peppermints. Safer holiday feasting Seasonal foods are as much a part of the holiday season as tinsel and twinkling lights. However, dining as a guest in someone's home can be a problem for people with food allergies. If you have food allergies, alert your host ahead of time. Offer to bring a dish or two that you know will be safe for you to eat. Carefully read labels on prepared foods to ensure they haven't been made with trigger ingredients or in a facility where they might have come in contact with allergens. If you're hosting someone

Avoid travel trip ups Whether you're visiting distant relatives or sharing a holiday meal with nearby neighbours, traveling during the holidays can mean exposure to allergens. Your neighbour's beloved dog or cat may trigger pet allergies, no matter how well she cleans the house. The sheets on your hotel room bed may be washed in a detergent that causes itching, and the pillows may expose you to dust mites. Be sure to pack your allergy medication before traveling. Pride And Prejudice

By Ray Kearney When we hear about famine, a drought in Africa probably springs to mind. We think of all the crops failing, animals dying and the population becoming weak and sick for the lack of food and water. Our mind’s eye sees crying black babies in their starving mother’s arms. We are confident that many charities and sympathetic governments will step in to feed these victims of famine. Most of us contribute in one way or another to alleviate the suffering of thousands of starving people. We see and hear appeals on the TV for help from aid agencies and also from the governments of those starving peoples, if they cannot resolve their problems alone.

Most will not be aware that in the late 1840s Ireland’s population of nearly 9,000,000 people was halved. An estimated 2,000,000 people emigrated. Reportedly 1,000,000 died from starvation but the real figure probably exceeds 2,000,000 men, women and children. In Ireland, unlike an African drought scenario all the crops did not fail, only the potato crop failed,for five consecutive years, the grain or other vegetable crops did not fail. The starving families did not have anything to sell and were unable to pay rent to the wealthy British landlords, who, in the course of the famine evicted over 500,000 poor farmers from their meagre

homes, which were usually then demolished. Young fathers who stole grain from the fields to feed their starving babies were sent in prison ships to Australia, often never to see their families again. The British government of the day, led by Lord John Russell could have saved millions of lives, but instead of sending food to Ireland to help alleviate the suffering, they actually EXPORTED food out of Ireland. They did nothing to halt wealthy landlords from evicting starving tenants. Then they introduced a type of hard slave labour for a meagre reward on a famine fatigued people. Hundreds of thousands died in ditches and in fields while lifting boulders and rocks to build walls in the west of Ireland. This unprecedented cruelty was nothing short of torture, perpetrated by the then British government on the Irish nation.

The British government of the time was strongly influenced by Sir Charles Trevelyan, the senior civil servant responsible for the administration of relief. He believed that: “the famine was a gift from God”. Trevelyan wrote; "the judgment of God sent the

calamity to teach the Irish a lesson" and “a direct stroke of an all-wise and all-merciful Providence”, not a humanitarian disaster of unprecedented proportions. He often referred to the poverty stricken Irish as a “social evil", people who were; “defective, violent, lazy, filthy and too reliant on the kindness of their betters”. This superior attitude of the 'educated elite' was more responsible for the deaths or displacement of those 4,000,000 Irish people than the potato crop failure was. Within 50 years this same attitude led to the deaths by starvation of an estimate 20 million people in two separate decades in India. The real problem is pride and the superior attitude that pride creates. When one group of people believe that they are better than another group, the natural consequence is racism, class distinction, exploitation, feuds, wars, ethnic cleansing and famine. Some examples include the slavery, apartheid, the Nazi treatment of the Jews, the Spanish Inquisition and people trafficking. We are all human beings, of equal worth. We do not need to agree with our neighbour’s beliefs, culture, customs or traditions but we do need to respect them as we respect ourselves and acknowledge all people as equal in the human family.

Why Some Bands Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day Keith Nicol Each Christmas, there are two records that Radio DJ's either love or hate to play, as they seem to have been around forever: Slade's 'Merry Xmas Everybody' and Wizzard's 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day'. Both records are major money spinners when it comes to royalty payments and they continue to reach the edges of the charts year by year. According to an article in the NME and research published in other UK newspapers, the royalties just keep rolling in for some of these artists.

Mariah Carey – ‘All I Want For Christmas’ (1994) Despite only just passing a million sales in the UK, Mariah’s thumping take on Christmas – which, rather interestingly, was made entirely on co-songwriter Walter Afanasieff’s computer – has enjoyed huge success across the world, with one figure quoting the song’s royalties at $50million. In 2015 the Daily Mail estimated she was making £376,000 from it per year.

2016 is not over yet but looking back, it seems that this year had taken away far too many from us, who still had so much to give. Just last week, Canadian Actor Alan Thicke, father of Robin Thicke (Blurred Lines) passed away from a heart attack at 69. Another two deaths that hit severely hard this year were those of Pop Icon David Bowie and Prince, to name but a few: The CoastRider wants to honour all of those who have passed, who may be gone, but never forgotten.

These two boys love nothing more than entertaining and strutting their stuff all across the Costa Blanca. They have regular bookings in several Hotels in the Benidorm area and also travel to Torrevieja and surrounding areas for parties and regular gigs. We’re Duo Zodiac, a vocal harmony two boy duo, working on the Costa Blanca for 14 years now. Our music styles range from 1950’s to about 2000’s, from dance music to show songs, We love to mix and match to suit the audience we are entertaining at the time, we also love to involve our audience and work with them and of course entertain !!

What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? Gary says; I don’t know as I’ve always been in the entertainment business from leaving school. Keith says ; Running a bar or hotel. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? This is a difficult one to answer because we have a mixed repertoire and from many genres. We feel that every artiste has an influence on you , one way or another. Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? No not now, we treat it as fun night, doing something we love.

How did you start in the business? Gary is from Weymouth, Dorset and has been in the business for 34 years since 1981, starting in a trio called The Grahames in Weymouth, Dorset, then moved to Blackpool in the early 90’s to form a successful duo called 2nd Dimension, then met Keith and moved to Spain in 2001 to become Duo Zodiac. Keith is from Nottingham but has lived in many different parts of the UK including Bournemouth and Brighton, then had a business in Blackpool called ‘Karena Guesthouse’ which is where Keith and Gary met in 2001, when they moved to Spain and the rest is history.

What was your best moment? When you know you’ve done your job and the audience really appreciate you and thank you with lovely comments at the end, that means so much. What has been your worst moment? When you get a crowd or few people that are really drunk, they think they can do your job and of course think you’re miming. What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? Listen to your fans, always do songs and material that people love, not what you like, always show that you enjoy your job, always be yourself and down to earth. Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? hahaha .. hmmm .. make sure your flies on your trousers are done up when you go on stage, for the guys we mean.

EU Opens Up Floodgates For Mortgage Repayments From Spanish Banks By Andreu & Alenda legalservice@andreualenda.com

A Ruling from the EU this week has overturned a previous ruling from the Spanish Supreme Court, which initially protected Spanish Banks from certain mortgage repayments. The ruling means that Spanish banks may have to repay Billions of Euros to Mortgage Customers, The banks involved include Banco Popular Espanol SA and BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA) after a final ruling by the European Union’s top court. In essence, borrowers who paid too much interest on home loans pre-dating a May 2013 Spanish ruling on so-called “clausulas suelo” or 'mortgage floors' are now entitled to a refund from their banks, proclaimed judges at the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg on Wednesday. The “clausulas suelo” or 'mortgage floors' were interest clauses, that were included in most variable home mortgages, This clause set a minimum interest rate that the client should pay, regardless of what the Euribor was valued at. Thus variable interest was calculated with the Banks adding a rate to the Euribor (the main benchmark for most mortgages in Spain), and this limitation prevented those affected from benefiting from the Euribo’s fall in value and thus a fall in their mortgage repayment rate. The EU Court of Justice said that a proposed time limit on the refunds is illegal and the Spanish Supreme Court ruing is now null and void and customers shouldn’t be bound by such unfair terms. In May 2013, the Spanish Supreme Court considered these clauses abusive, on the understanding that consumers had not been

informed of the economic and legal burden imposed on them. This ruling limited the maximum retroactivity so that its nullity only had future effects, so consumers would not be repaid what was previously paid due to this clause up to that date. This term of limitation has now been overturned. Since that judgment from the Spanish Supreme Court, clents started asking the banks to reimburse them the sums paid for the excess interest resulting from the application of the floor clauses after May 9, 2013. An appeal was filed before the Court of Justice of the European Union to rule on whether or not such a limitation of compensation infringes European consumer protection rules. The Court of Justice interprets EU law to make sure it is applied in the same way in all EU countries, and settles legal disputes between national governments and EU institutions. There was a preliminary ruling giving reason to the financial entities, and this discourage all consumers as judgements usually respect this preliminary reasoning although it is not binding. The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled on Wednesday, that financial institutions should now reimburse any consumers affected by the clauses with the full amount that has been overcharged since the beginning of each mortgage contract, and not only from May 9, 2013, as determined by the Supreme Court. From when can the sentence be applied? It has immediate effect. Who can claim against the bank? Any client who has not yet claimed, either before their financial institution or before the courts, may

demand the refund of the amounts even if your mortgage has already being paid, as long as it was not more than four years ago. Will the banks refund me if I do not make a claim? No, the banks will only refund you if a petition is filed. They will study petitions, case by case, to verify whether the client has accepted the formal conditions of the mortgage and the good faith rules haven’t been broken. They will try to avoid payments. These petitions can be filed before your financial entity or in court. Is the refunded amount subject to taxes? Part of what the bank returns to those who overpaid for “ land clauses” as a result of the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) should go directly to the Inland Revenue. This point affects those who have a habitual residence acquired before 2013 and, therefore, deduct the principal sum and interest of the mortgage destined to pay it, in their yearly tax forms. Upon receipt of the refund, it will be found that in the corresponding years they benefited from a deduction higher than that which they were entitled to. We recommend you to contact your tax adviser to deal with this matter as all the previous tax forms from the last four years, will need to be modified. Features a sharp voice cast, including David Walliams and Rob Brydon, with Gemma Chan voicing Snow White, Dominic West playing the Wolf and Rose Leslie bringing to life Red Riding Hood. twist and sees the Doctor team up with a super-powered vigilante called The Ghost (Justin Chatwin) and a journalist (Charity Wakefield) to save New York City from alien attack. This may be the last Christmas special for showrunner Steven Moffat before he hands over the sonic screwdriver to Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall for more adventures in time and space.

Mercedes F1 tech chief Paddy Lowe moves to Williams By Nigel Owen Mercedes technical chief Paddy Lowe is poised to make a shock switch to Williams next season, with multiple sources indicating that he has accepted an offer to join the Grove-based team. On the back of three consecutive Formula 1 world championship titles, Lowe’s future at Mercedes had been the subject of speculation for months after it emerged his contract was due to run out at the end of the year.

Lowe joined Williams in (1987-1993). In 1987 Lowe was employed by Williams as Joint Head of Electronics. He spent six years at Williams, during which time he oversaw the development of active suspension, used to help Nigel Mansell win the 1992 World Championship.

Talks between Lowe and Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff about extending his deal had been delayed until after the season, but it emerged this week that the intensity of the negotiations had ramped up after a rival team had made a serious bid to lure Lowe away. According to sources with good knowledge of the situation, that team is Williams – which is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2016 campaign, where it dropped to fifth place in the constructors’ championship battle.

Lowe moved to McLaren in 1993, when he was employed as Head of Research and Development, a department subsequently renamed Vehicle Technology. He was head of the department for eight years until 2001, when he was appointed Chief Engineer Systems Development, a role focusing on the race programme for the McLaren MP4-20. In May 2005 he assumed the role of Engineering Director, which gave him responsibility for all the engineering departments. In January 2011 Lowe became the team's Technical Director. Lowe moved to the Mercedes Formula One team as Executive Director on 3 June 2013. In 2015 Lowe was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Along with his elder brother Professor Michael Lowe they are the first brothers to be elected Fellows of the Academy.

Although there has been no official confirmation from either team on the situation, it is understood that Lowe has indicated that he will accept what Williams has to offer. Furthermore, with his contract at Mercedes due to expire on December 31, it is

possible that he will not be forced to take a lengthy period of gardening leave – meaning he could be able to switch teams for the start of 2017 season. It is unclear exactly what Lowe’s position will be at Williams, but it has been thought for some time that its technical chief Pat Symonds has been looking to bow out of F1 after a lengthy career. There could, as such, be a transition phase, where Symonds hands over control to Lowe so that he can retire at the end of 2017. Lowe may, however, take on even greater team management responsibilities, as it has been clear that his motivation for the prior move from McLaren to Mercedes was to be involved in

Snow in the Sierra Bernia

Following the terrific rainfalls along the entire Mediterranean coast last week, during the Christmas period many people head towards the mountains to do a spot of skiing. I was asked again about my travels in our 600 and with the recent heavy snow in parts of Spain this is a good start. More of this story can be seen in edition 606. In those early days of classics the clubs supported each other and especially being Vice President of the eleventh Spanish 600 & Classic club to be formed in Spain. Snow has been as close as Almoradi and I have travelled on a 200kms trip back from Albacette in a snow storm with my 600. But I think that this story may interest you. We started off in our SEAT 600E from Torrevieja in the dark one Sunday in January 2005 at 7.30am and to help us on our way it was freezing and raining. Being in a car designed in the 50s it took sometime to warm up but eventually the windows cleared and we got warm. Our destination was Benissa 150 kms north of Alicante near Denia to meet other Spanish Clubs to help the town celebrate their Feria of San Antonio with a Medieval street fair and exhibitions of crafts. We were invited by the organising Club Amics 600 Denia to display our cars in a reserved area as part of the fiesta. At the service area near Elche we joined members from Amigos 600 Elche resulting in a fine display of Cars and Motorcycles.

Approaching Alicante the rain stopped and the sky lightened with streaks of pink and orange. Passing Benidorm it looked like a summers day except for the foot of snow by the side of the motorway. Only a few days before the motorway was closed due to the large fall of snow and was only opened the day before to traffic. We eventually entered Benissa and parked in the exhibition area, joining cars from Javea, Denia and Albacete. The line of 70 Classic cars snaked ahead in the snow up the mountain that lay behind Guardalest which overlooks Benidorm. You could almost sense the excitement of the Spaniards who may have only seen snow on the television but never physically been out in it. It was now that I was pleased we had a police escort as passing became nerve racking with sheer drops only inches away. Still there is always a sense of

adventure when we go out in our little 600 especially as our Spanish friends do not know fear or worry about the unknown. Finally we arrived at the top. Everyone piled out of their cars and very soon there were snowballs everywhere. After a display we carefully descented down the hill and back to Benissa for Lunch. And a further display pf cars. Then it was time to say goodbye to friends old and new and get into our car once more for the two hour journey of 150 kms. and home. More than 300 kms in total and quite a trip. And don't forget, if you are headed to an area of snow, you must carry snow socks or chains for your tyres. Driving under the influence With the Christmas season now well and truly in force, and staying with us until January 6th, 2017, Torrevieja Councillor Fanny Serrano recently announced a local police campaign to combat driving under the influence. During 2016, 1,300 vehicle accidents were reported to the police in Torrevieja. A recent national report says that 30% of drivers in Spain are under the influence of drugs or alcohol of which drugs have overtaken alcohol as the most used. This week it was announced that 25,000 police checks are made each and every day and last weekend there were 23 deaths on the roads. To address this problem the Torrevieja police will test drivers involved in accidents with a saliva drug test. If the

police think that any driver may be over the alcohol limit then they will be given a breath test for alcohol. For visitors or non residents who are here at this time please remember that drugs also include medicine from the chemist that advises not to drive while taking them. Also

According to a recent report by Spain's Traffic Department, the DGT, last week Trafico carried out more than 25,000 daily tests looking for alcohol and drug drivers. As is usual in recent years around this time, the Director General of Traffic is launching an awareness campaign about the risk posed by the use of psychoactive substances and driving, at a time of year when alcohol consumption and other drugs increases due to meals and Christmas dinners. A report conducted annually by the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Science (INTCF) regarding drivers killed in 2015, noted that 43.10% of drivers analysed, tested positive for alcohol, drugs and / or psychotropic drugs.
