Two icons of Torrevieja's cultural scene were sadly taken from us this week: Marie Joy Davies and Derek Francis.

Both had lived in Torrevieja for many years and raised thousands of euros (and pesetas) over the years through their charity endeavours and concerts. They be sorely missed by everyone who knew them or that enjoyed their shows over the years.

In the UK former England Football Manager, and a true gentleman of the sport, Graham Taylor also passed away this week, and yesterday, Friday, Princess Margaret's former husband and world renowned photographer Lord Snowden was also taken from us. In the USA, US Author and film-maker William Peter Blatty, best known for writing The Exorcist, died at the age of 89. This follows he deaths last week of Hollywood legend Debbie Reynolds, who passed away the day following the death of her daughter Carrie Fisher.

Larry Steinbachek, former keyboardist with 1980s synthpop group Bronski Beat, has died at the age of 56.Steinbachek formed the group with Jimmy Somerville and Steve Bronski in 1983 and they had chart success with songs including Smalltown Boy and Why?. Their cover of Donna Summer's I Feel Love with Marc Almond was also a hit.

Steinbachek's sister Louise Jones told BBC News he died last month after a short battle with cancer, with his family and friends at his bedside.

Singer-songwriter Peter Sarstedt, best known for the song Where Do You Go To (My Lovely), has died at the age of 75, his family has said. The song topped the UK singles charts in February 1969 and remained number one for four weeks. It was also number one in many other countries and won the Ivor Novello award for best song composition. He died peacefully after a six-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a

family statement said. Where Do You Go To (My Lovely), a song about a girl born in poverty who becomes a member of the European jet-set, was replaced as number one by Marvin Gaye's I Heard it Through the Grapevine. It was included in the compilation programme One-Hit Wonders at the BBC, which was broadcast on BBC Four last year, although Sarstedt also reached number 10 in the charts with Frozen Orange Juice in June 1969.

He wrote more than a dozen albums in a career that spanned more than 50 years, releasing his last, Restless Heart, in 2013.

Rockabilly guitarist Tommy Allsup, who narrowly avoided boarding the plane that killed Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper, has died aged 85. The musician famously lost a coin toss for a seat on the plane. His place was taken by teen star Ritchie Valens, who also perished when the plane crashed. Allsup went on to become a Grammy-winning musician, who played with Merle Haggard, Roy Orbison and Willie Nelson. He said he thought about the crash, and thanked God, every day of his life. The musician died on Wednesday at a hospital in Springfield, Missouri, due to complications from a hernia operation, said his son Austin. He met Buddy Holly in a recording studio in 1958, and the star invited him to join his band on the fateful Winter Dance Party tour a year later. Crossing Midwest America in freezing conditions, many of the musicians succumbed to the flu and even frostbite.

To avoid one particularly wintry bus journey, Holly decided to charter a plane between Clear Lake, Iowa and their next venue in Minnesota. Allsup was originally supposed to catch the flight, but Valens - who had previously suffered a fear of flying - pestered him to swap places. "He asked me four or five times could he fly in my place," Allsup recalled in 2007. "For some reason, I pulled a half dollar out of my pocket and flipped it. He said 'heads' and it came up heads. "So I went out to the station wagon and told Buddy. I said, 'I'm not going. Me and Ritchie flipped a coin. He's going in my place'. Buddy, said 'cool'." The plane crashed shortly after take-off in the Iowa countryside.

tenor roles with local Operatic Societies in such musicals as Carousel, White Horse Inn and My Fair Lady, and was not to know that Ellie would almost whisk him off his feet, as she used to dance professionally. Her parents owned the Crawford Arms Hotel in Manchester and Ellie was a tap and ballet dancer in the city with a local troupe while band leaders such as Stanley Black and Ted Heath all stayed at the Hotel, making the venue a real entertainment hub.

Torrevieja's cultural scene suffered a double loss this week, as local Tenor Derek Francis passed away. This followed the death of another local icon Marie Joy Davis, who life we also commemorate in this edition. Local author and historian Andy Ormiston added: “Another great trouper has died. Derek Francis is well known for his endless concerts as a professional tenor in Torrevieja. He has organised many concerts for local charities and was a member of Lyrica Nostra.

Despite having a limited Spanish vocabulary, he communicated and integrated deeply in The Torrevieja town's cultural events.

He has been a feature of the Casino's winter programme but is possibly remembered best for his performances of Phantom of The Opera, which he performed most recently in early December. I am sure he has taken a rose with him for his darling wife Ellie who died n May 2014.

Derek had a fall a few months ago and damaged his hip and was cared for by his daughter and Her husband in Crevillente. He will be missed by many musical Spanish friends and I have no doubt they will organise a musical homage sometime.”

As the news spread, tributes came came in quickly, including former number one selling artist Ricky Valance, who passed on his condolences. On Facebook: Amanda Payne: “Oh no! More sad news.” Francis Symons “Rest in peace Derek, you will be missed.” Mamen Mateo Bosch D. E. Derek and Elle were almost inseparable since they first met. Back in 2014 Ellie said, “We celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in June, and I'm looking forward to spending another romantic day with my Toy Boy, Derek.” Along with his main performances in the Cultural Casino, he also put on a number of charity performances each year in the Palacio de la Musica along side some of Torrevieja's best known classical artists. Part IV Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

which leads his father to briefly mourn him. In reality the drop is only five metres, but nifty camera work disguises that inconvenient and undramatic fact.

Stephen Spielberg is no stranger to Spain, having shot scenes from many of his films there, and having been influenced as a student by the work of director David Lean, who filmed most of Doctor Zhivago and a great part of Lawrence of Arabia in Spain. In fact, one of Spielberg’s unrequited wishes was to make a James Bond film, and he has said that making Indiana Jones was a kind of ‘next best thing’.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) features Sean Connery as Indiana’s father, although he is only twelve years older than Harrison Ford in real life. Spielberg selected his locations on a helicopter trip over the desert scenery of Almeria, after which he and the crew landed at the Parador Nacional de Mojacar for lunch.

Spielberg and his crew began shooting Last Crusade on May 11th, 1988 in Almeria, and among the scenes was the Palace of the Sultan of the Republic of Hatay, which was in fact Almeria’s ‘Escuela de Artes’. Among the school’s claims to fame was having once had Frederico Garcia Lorca as a student there. The impressive Arabic style patio betrays the fact that the 18th century building was once the convent of Santo Domingo.

The scene where a Rolls Royce is enough to seal the Sultan’s collaboration with the Nazis was at first intended to be filmed in the famous Patio de los Leones in Granada’s legendary Alhambra Palace, a privilege rumoured to cost about 5,000 euros a day! Perhaps for that reason they eventually swapped it for the Escuela de Artes.

Nevertheless, some money was squeezed from Spielberg’s wallet, as he and his wife and son stayed at the Parador Nacional in Granada, which is situated in the grounds of the Alhambra. In Almeria, on the other hand, they rented a villa at the resort of Aguadulce, just west of Almeria city.

There actually was a Republic of Hatay from 1938 to 1939, after the region was granted independence from French Syria and before it became a province of Turkey. The capital of Hatay was Alexandretta before 1939 when the city's name was changed to Iskenderun. In the film, the

Andalusian town of Guadix, near Granada was Iskenderun, and made its railway station available so that Denholm Elliot could be mobbed by beggars before being kidnapped by Nazis.

One Almeria street that appeared in the film was Calle Almanzor, which had to shed its modern street lights for Indie, his father and Fez-wearing ally to wind their way up towards the Alcazaba palace; or at least they would have done had they gone further.

The Tabernas Desert, with the Ramblas de Trujillo, Búho, Benavides, Lanujar and Indalecio were used for Indie’s single-handed battle against German tanks (although to be fair, the Germans didn’t have whips), as were Las Salinillas and the Finca las Lomillas. It is in the Buho (owl) ravine that Indie shoves a rock into the tank’s barrel, next to a famous pile of red rocks known locally as La Tortuga (the tortoise). Harrison’s horse was the legendary ‘Hurricane’ trained by the Almerian horse breeder Paco Ardura, the same horse used by Sylvester Stallone in Rambo III. The old road between Rodalquilar and Aguamarga was also used, particularly for the tunnel scene where Indie and father are followed into the tunnel by a bewildered German pilot in his flaming plane (the road tunnel was in fact part of the abandoned Rodalquilar mines).

The scene where Indie’s car was attacked by a German plane was filmed in Los Escullos, Nijar, as well as at Turre and Sierra Cabrera, and at Punta del Esparto, just south of Los Escullos, their car hit a bomb crater.

Other places in Almeria that appear in the film are Ramblas Viciana and Lanos and the Baños de Alfaro. It is the Alfaro hill from which the tank goes over a cliff, apparently with Indie inside,

This time around it’s not snakes that rattle Indiana Jones but rats (in Venice) and seagulls. When Dr Jones Senior scares the ‘seagulls’, making them fly up and provoke the plane crash, they are in fact pigeons. If you look closely you can see that there are a number of 'cut out' seagulls in the sand, which do not move. It was filmed at the beach of Monsúl near San José, with its high dunes and the large emblematic rock on the shoreline known locally as ‘La Peineta’.

Two thousand rats were bred for the sewer scene (they had to be bred especially, as ordinary rats would have been diseased). A veil of silence hangs over what became of them when shooting stopped, although so far, animal protection groups have not made any serious protests. Although supposedly in Venice, the sewer scene was in fact shot in what was the basement of Almeria’s Casino, and is now the Delegación de Gobierno in the Paseo de Almeria.

The doorman there is Sergio Ortega, and Sergio remembers when Spielberg was there, while the building was undergoing reforms, and how he spent a few days creating a sewer in the basement to shoot those scenes. Sergio, when he was still at school, worked as an extra for the film ‘Conan the Barbarian’, and you can spot him at one point holding a severed head in each hand. Today, the basement, which Sergio will happily show you, contains a large number of filing cabinets full of vital statistics no doubt, although the original arches can still be seen.

When Indiana is earlier seen heading towards Berlin on his sidecar, the crew had moved away from arid Almeria, but not too far away. In fact they went to the adjacent province of Granada, and the greener mountains of the Sierra de Huetor, on the track that goes to Prado Negro among others.

The crossroad where they have to decide whether to go to Berlin or Venice is situated in the Sierra de la Alfaguara, at the crossroads between Las Mimbres and Prado Negro. The interior of the Zeppelin sequence was also filmed in the heat of Spain. Neither Ford nor Connery wore trousers during the conversation at the table, in order to avoid excessive sweating. (Connery's character is wearing a tweed suit and Ford's character wore a leather jacket). The airfield used was at Mojácar, and the crash landing took place in the Sierra de Cabrera, nearby.

Roast Pheasant Serves 4

Pheasant makes a nice change from chicken, and this recipe gives a richness to the meat, while madeira gravy adds something special.

Ingredients ● 2 pheasants; ● 1 apple, chopped; ● 4 rashers streaky bacon; ● seasoning

For the gravy: 2 tbsp madeira; 1-2 tsp arrowroot or cornflour; 300ml game or chicken stock Method: Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, gas mark 5; Lay the rashers of bacon over the breast meat and put some apple and pepper into the main cavity of the birds.

the outside and roast in the oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the birds are cooked.

When the pheasants are cooked, lift onto a carving board, cover with foil and leave to stand for 10 minutes.

Prepare the gravy. Tip the cooking juices into a jug and skim away excess fat. If necessary, make up to 300ml with water. Return the juices to the roasting tin with the madeira and bring to the boil, simmering for a few minutes until a good flavour is obtained.

Mix the arrowroot or cornflour with a little water and blend into the hot stock. Season to taste with pepper and strain into a gravy boat.

Serve the pheasant with the gravy and a selection of roasted vegetables and/or parsnip chips.

Toffee Apple Cake Serves 12

Arrange the birds in a large roasting tin, pour the stock around

Why make toffee apples when you can make toffee apple cake? Easier to eat and something all the family can enjoy, particularly when served warm on a winter's evening.

Ingredients ● 23 eggs; 200g sugar; 280ml vegetable oil; 2 tsps vanilla extract; 375g plain flour; 1 tsp salt; 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda; 500g chopped,

peeled apples; 120g chopped pecans. ● For the toffee sauce: 125g butter; 60ml milk; 225g dark brown soft sugar; 1 pinch salt ● For the gravy: 2 tbsp madeira; 1-2 tsp arrowroot or cornflour; 300ml game or chicken stock

Method: Beat the eggs in a large bowl until fluffy and then gradually add sugar.

Blend in oil and vanilla. Combine flour, salt and bicarbonate of soda and add to egg mixture. Stir in apples and pecans.

Spoon the mixture into a greased 25cm ring tin before baking for 1 hour 15 minutes or until the cake tests done with a knife or skewer.

Cool in tin on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then remove cake to a serving plate.

For the toffee sauce, combine all the ingredients in a saucepan; boil for 3 minutes, stirring constantly, and then drizzle over warm cake.

Two weeks ago when I heard Ray Davies had been knighted my mind raced back a month to when I saw the King Kink himself in a north London pub. On our calendar the last Sunday of November every year is marked KK. Given the connotation of those letters, I’ll move quickly to explain. In this case KK stands for Kinks Konvention – an annual gathering of 300 or so Kinks fans from around the world who meet to celebrate the career of a group whose recorded output is at the forefront of popular music.

sibling rivalry between Ray and Dave Davies, the Brothers Grim of rock music, prompting the second thought I had when hearing of the knighthood – Sir Ray is the last thing Dave is likely to call him.

Very often Ray makes an appearance at the Konvention – just as he did a few weeks ago at The Boston Arms in Tufnell Park - leading the Kast-Off Kinks line-up currently on stage into a song to wondrous acclaim from the audience. It really is something the following day to say: ‘I saw Ray Davies in the pub yesterday afternoon.’

From ‘You Really Got Me’through ‘Waterloo Sunset’ and ‘Days’ to ‘Lola,’ Ray wrote for The Kinks a run of singles unequalled by any other band. At least half a dozen of their albums are none too shabby either – if only allowed one item on a desert island it would be my wife, but I’d make sure she brought as hers their stunning Muswell Hillbillies album. No other songwriter has captured the essence of daily life in such a poetic, but simple way – Pete Townshend has called Ray ‘the poet laureate of rock,’ that from a man who knows something about song writing.

From early afternoon on this given Sunday an array of musicians known collectively as the Kast-Off Kinks (all bar one a former Kink) take part in a game of musical chairs playing in groups of four or five for roughly half an hour - each ensemble playing songs from an incredible catalogue of work. Most of this Kinks collective have at one time been sacked, retired or simply could no longer stand the

So arise Sir Raymond Douglas Davies of Muswell Hill – your knighthood is richly deserved. In his honour I suggest we raise a glass of something appropriate (without wishing to influence you dear reader there is a magnificent song on the Muswell Hillbillies LP called ‘Alcohol’) and play some Kinks hits, greeting each one like an old friend.

Don’t look for anything better than a collection of Kinks singles – it hasn’t been recorded.

Avoid popular travel times Avoid crowds and save money by travelling on slower days. The day prior to holidays will always be hectic, so opt to fly two to three days before or after to enjoy a slower airport plus cheaper ticket prices. For non-holiday travel, avoid early-morning flights on weekdays so you and your baby don't have to compete with harried business travelers.

Bring a prepared bottle Bring a prepared bottle for the airport; it can help keep your baby content during the lengthy check-in process. It's also a must during takeoff to relieve ear pressure. You can take more than 3.4 ounces of infant formula or breast milk through airport security. Tell the transportation security officer that you have medically necessary liquids at the beginning of the checkpoint screening process. Visit the TSA for more info on flying with children.

Rent gear If you can't bring all your gear when travelling, consider renting. Ask your hotel about rental options in the area so you can have everything you need to make baby feel comfortable without having to lug items across the country. It is an extra cost, but it also saves you the cost of having to check bulky items on the plane.

Split up your stuff When packing bags you plan to check at the airport, split up the contents so that each suitcase has everyone's clothes in it, including your baby's. That way if a bag gets lost, everyone will have something to wear for the next few days until your bag is found. Essentials such as formula, medicine, etc. should be packed in your carry-on.

Eat in or eat out early Book a hotel with a kitchen so you can make babyfriendly foods in a comfortable space. When you do want to eat out, remember that prime time for eating out with infants, toddlers and preschoolers is Sunday through Wednesday before standard lunch or dinner times (11:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m.). Restaurants are less crowded and you'll get faster service.

Gyms are like marmite, you either love them or hate them, I’m in the latter group, I’ve never liked exercise or gyms. About 12 years ago I first heard about Power Assisted Exercise (PAE), which uses electric motors to move the user rather than the user having to move the machine and so requires little or no effort. I’m told that our muscles exercise equally well whether a machine is moving them or we are moving them ourselves. Apparently anyone can use these machines. These machines were first designed 80 years ago by a man whose wife had survived polio but suffered from wasting of her muscles. These early machines were the forerunner of Power Assisted or stress free exercise because it is the opposite of the normal sweating and straining of vigorous gym exercise and is easy on the joints and muscles.

There are many reasons why over 80% of people don’t like conventional exercise, often people feel intimidated or uncomfortable in an environment with fit gym users and others fear possible pain and strain or they have a negative perception of their own body, more feel unfit or overweight or they don’t want to make a serious time commitment.

Each PAE machine is dual function and works on your muscles which increase the need for oxygen to be circulated, so the machines produce mobility and flexibility benefits. Combined with

We don't just mean playing Auld Lang Syne at the stroke of midnight, and broadcasting a live party from your radio DJ software. These resolutions can follow you well beyond the New Year: Broaden your playlists No-one likes being stuck in a mire of the same material, day-in, day-out. Although your listeners will appreciate having the consistency of a certain genre of music to plug into - 80s rock, jazz, pop or punk - it's best to shake up your old standards, and bring in some new blood, so to speak.

Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite A definitive moment in music history happened on this day, January 14, 1973, when Elvis Presley reinvented himself with his performance Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite.

The concert took place at the Honolulu International Center (HIC) in Honolulu and aired in over 40 countries across Asia and Europe (who received the telecast the next day, also in primetime). Despite the satellite innovation, the United States did not air the concert until April 4, 1973 (because the concert took place the same day as Super Bowl VII). Viewing figures have been estimated to be between 1 and 1.5 billion viewers worldwide. The show was the most expensive entertainment special at the time, costing $2.5 million.

Background On July 8, 1972, inspired by a recent visit made

by U.S. President Richard Nixon to China a few months earlier, Presley's manager, Colonel Thomas Parker, announced that there would be a worldwide satellite broadcast from Hawaii to allow the whole world the chance to see a Presley concert "since it is impossible for us to play in every major city." Parker initially stated that it would take place in either October or November 1972, but this date was changed to early 1973 after MGM showed concern about it clashing with the release of their documentary film Elvis on Tour. As the show had already been planned prior to this upset, the original shows, now set for November, would still go ahead but without being filmed.

1966. Seeing the chance to publicize Presley's charitable nature once again, Parker eagerly agreed.

Producer-director Marty Pasetta had attended one of Presley's concerts at Long Beach in midNovember, and he had found it to be "boring" and lacking in any physical excitement. He approached Parker with ideas about the broadcast, including a runway that led out from the stage so Presley could get closer to his audience. Parker insisted that the ideas were useless, and that Presley would agree that they were useless. Pasetta, however, decided to approach Presley about the ideas anyway and was pleasantly surprised to find that he would be happy to do whatever Pasetta felt was best for the show. This was another example of the evergrowing rift between Presley and his manager.

Although Presley would later dismiss Parker, whom he never truly befriended and towards whom he was openly hostile in his later years, the two would reconcile professionally shortly thereafter, and Parker would remain Presley's manager for the rest of the artist's life.

Parker held another press conference on September 4, 1972, in Las Vegas to confirm that the concert, now titled Aloha From Hawaii, would be broadcast on January 14, 1973. The press were told that an audience of 1 billion was expected to tune in to see the "first entertainment special to be broadcast live around the world," even though Parker had not taken into account the fact that many countries, including parts of Europe and America, would not see the concert live due to the time of the broadcast.

Although the Our World broadcast was the first live, international, satellite television production, which was broadcast worldwide on June 25, 1967, which included entertainment artists such as Maria Callas and headlined by The Beatles) - Aloha From Hawaii was the first live satellite concert to be with a single performer. Two weeks after the Las Vegas press conference Parker received a letter from Honolulu Advertiser columnist Eddie Sherman. He suggested to Parker that, as Presley had recorded, and was still performing, the song "I'll Remember You," which had been written and composed by Kui Lee, the donations could go to the Kui Lee Cancer Fund that had been set up following the death of the songwriter in

Audience tickets for the January 14 concert and its January 12 pre-broadcast rehearsal show carried no price. Each audience member was asked to pay whatever he or she could aord. The performance and concert merchandise sales raised $75,000 for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund in Hawaii.

Rehearsals were held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village while the main set was being constructed. Although there were several technical problems, the rehearsals were an overall success.

The original release of the album, however, did not include the five post-show performances. The album would be Presley's final number 1 album during his lifetime.

Initially released only in quadraphonic sound, the album was the first quadraphonic album to top the Billboard album chart, and remains the biggestselling release in the format.

By Keith Nicol With a brand new year of music and releases ahead of us, let's take a look back at some of the biggest selling singles of 2016. Let's also remember that the new charts are a that these days combination chart that includes digital, physical and streaming to give us an equivalent sales total, and not as you and I might remember as we went to record shop each week and picked out that seven inch vinyl to take home and play on our trusty record player.

The chart also contains a number of recording that never made mainstream radio, but you can view everyday on one of the many music channels on TV. These are the club and dance tracks, many of which overuse the clichéd 'F' and 'N' word for the semi-shock value or street 'cred', so they don't make the breakfast playlist.

The biggest selling record of year, that strangely was never played on a number of local radio stations at the time, was Drake's One Dance, feat.

Wizkid and Kyla. Those of us that share the car with our teenagers, doing dad's taxi duties, could hear it on a regular basis on Spanish radio. As the officials charts said: “One Dance was the inescapable sound of the summer in 2016, notching up an astonishing 15 weeks at Number 1, levelling with Wet Wet Wet’s epic stint with Love Is All Around in 1994 but falling short of the all-time record. One Dance, which was Drake's first Number 1 as a lead artist, has racked up 1.95 million combined sales, made up of 530,000

downloads and an impressive 142 million streams. Along with being the most streamed song of 2016, One Dance also enjoyed the biggest one-week combined sales figure for a Number 1 single of the year so far, notching up 140,000 during its fourth week at the top in April.”

At the other end of the scale, and coming in second with a combined tally of 1.49 million, was a very popular song on local radio, Lukas Graham's 7 Years. The Danish band spent five weeks at Number 1. Take away the streaming aspect, and they would actually have finished top of this year's sales-only countdown.

Sia's Cheap Thrills spent 38 weeks in the Top 40 to claim its place as the third biggest song of the year, with 1.46m combined sales. Mike Posner’s big comeback track I Took A Pill In Ibiza (Seeb remix) spent four weeks at the top of the chart being the fourth biggest tune of the year, with a tally of 1.38m. Number five was Calvin Harris and Rihanna who reunited for This Is What You Came For. It didn't quite make Number 1 and had to settle for Number 2 thanks to Drake, racking up 1.28m combined sales over 2016.

The gorgeous Zara Larsson’s Lush Life spent 13 weeks in the Top 10 giving her the sixth biggest

song of 2016 (1.16m): The Chainsmokers took seventh place with Closer (1.15m), and Justin Bieber's Love Yourself claimed 1.14m combined sales to take eighth. Other popular songs you may, or may not have missed included Calum Scott's cover of Robyn classic Dancing On My Own peaked at Number 2 in August, coming 12th (1.11m), just ahead of Major Lazer's massive Number 1 single Cold Water feat. Justin Bieber and MØ (14th with 1.06m). Believe it or not, it's still holding onto the Number one spot as we go to press in 2017, but sneaking in the the Top 40 biggest songs of 2016 is Clean Bandit with their eight-week chart topper Rockabye placed at 37 and a song that may also feature in the top 40 of 2017.

By David Hudson The following are just a few of the noteworthy events that have taken place over the past two months.

1st Concentration Club Espana

DeLorean

The small active club of the famous DeLorean car celebrated its first concentration on the beautiful Island of Menorca. Only 9,000 cars were built between 1981 to 1982 and most that are still around are in America.

It is a marvellous achievement that there are enough cars still running to form a club in Spain. If you are interested in this Northern Irish built car, search for: facebook DeLorean Club Espana. All the owners are young and enthusiastic and drive the car as it was designed to be.

Club members came from all over Spain from the Provinces of Pais Vasco, Aragon, Madrid, Cataluna, Rioja and assembled in the port of Barcelona with six DeLoreans to travel to the island of Menorca with a mechanic. They reunited with another member from Menorca. They spent three days travelling around the island visiting historic places, museums and had special guided tours. They created an enormous interest with photo shoots. I wish this young club all the best in the future.

Tarancon and Cuenca: then on to the old Valencia road staying overnight in Chiva. Then next day the rally visited the museum of the Valencia Bomberos in Alcoy, which is the most important record of the development of fire fighting in the Valencia Provence. The Rally left Alcoy to travel to the Sierras of Aitana and the twisty road full of Sbends that led to Benidorm calling in to Guadalest. The Ayuntamiento arranged for the veteran cars to have reserved parking and they enjoyed visiting the Museum of Historic Vehicles of the Valley of Guardalest.

Afterwards they continued to Benidorm and their hotel.

The next day they got into their cars and visited Altea which is a paradise for artists. The convoy parked their cars in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to have a guided tour of the Plaza de la Iglesia explaning the history and architecture.

The visit was concluded with an enjoyable almuerzo in the Club Nautico of Altea. On the final day in Benidorm the Mayor received them and thanked them for coming and

enjoying a hot chocolatada the public were able to wander amongst the exhibition of classic vehicles. Then the concentration of classics drove to Algeciras and the Yacimiento Argueologico El Martel and a well deserved meal. The classics facing the sea made a lovely exhibition for the public to enjoy.

RunRun Clasicos This was the 5th Annual Concentration of motorcycles in Mar Menor. The 140 participants came from Seville, Albacete, Toledo, Madrid, Valencia, Castellon, Santander and Alicante and met in San Pedro del Pinator. On a very cold day the usual 'recorrido' was again different from the previous years. To match the historic motorcycles they made their way towards Murcia and the Sanctuary of Fuensanta high in the mountains. This impressive monastery sits on a plateau with plenty of space for a brunch of Jamon, salezones, mojanas, eggs and embutidos amongst the trees, while they were being entertained by musicians.

Rally Madrid – Benidorm – Madrid The Veteran Car Club of Spain recreated the longest 30 year old Spanish Rally for antique cars.

The motive by the Club Cosworth Espana in celebrating the birth of the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth and to pay homage to the charismatic model. The event drew 50 participants of the classic from Spain, Portugal and England. The Saturday started the event with a drive from San Sebastian to explore the area. On Sunday the convoy of Sierras descended on to the historic circuit of Jarama. The cars were allowed o drive around the circuit then they were able to realy put their cars to the test and demonstrated the speed and road holding that the Sierras are famous for.

20th - 22nd January in Palacio of Ferias & Congresos of Malaga Organised by Eventos del Motor hoped that it would become a annual event. The rally cars then left for the return trip to Madrid staying in the Parador National of Albacete constructed in the typical style Castellano-Manchega. Then the cars made their final stage to arrived in Madrid. All agreed that the rally was enjoyable with beautiful roads, rich food and being able to visit the local culture.

VII Encuentro Villa Alhama of Murcia The Association Motors Classic Alhama organised this 8th encuentro as part of the Recinto Feria.

Ten Classic Clubs from Alicante, Almeria, Albacete and Murcia with a total of 150 vehicles and 250 participants.

Inside the theatre was decorated in the period with Toni Ceda's 1925 Indian Chievo. The evening ended with jiving to “Dirty Rice” big band and a marvellous end to the day.

ever, even if it doesn't quite work. In the first show the fireman avoided some of the things we had set up for him but you just go with it.

We had so many great nominations for Unexpected Star so there are some wonderful performers, really surprising, incredible talent but also really fun people. We have tried to make them all really different this series. There is a 12 year old girl, a father and son and, 21 different people become unexpected stars in the Christmas show!

Tell us a bit about series two of Michael McIntyre's Big Show?

The show has naturally evolved from the first series and now everything has gone up a notch. We have lots of entertainment items running through the show, audience surprises, Unexpected Star, Send To All, stand up and much more. Knowing that series one was a success has allowed us to expand the ideas for series two and explore more parts of it, we have tried to make them even more fun and be more confident with them.

How does it feel to be bringing the show back to BBC One? I am really excited about it. It's been a gradual process, because first and foremost I am a stand up.

I do stand up in every show but I am interested and excited by entertainment television. I'm new to it and what's really surprised me, because we record the show in a theatre, is how big the laughs are. The atmosphere has been amazing; almost annoyingly as I think I can't really get laughs like this with my jokes! So much of the comedy that comes out the show is natural to the situation, so it works really well. I have really enjoyed the opportunity and responsibility of trying to create a family entertainment show. As a family man who is also looking for entertainment on a Saturday night, I've tried to provide it.

What can you tell us about this series Unexpected Stars?

This series we've got a space next door to the theatre, so people don't even know they are coming to the theatre now. The first Unexpected Star this series is a fireman and he thinks he is giving a fire safety course. One week the space is a wine bar, one week it's a photography studio so every week it's changing. Then we get people into the theatre but they still don't know they are coming onto the stage.

When it was a bar next door, the Unexpected Star thought the theatre was actually a club around the corner, so we had people queuing onto the stage with a bouncer on the end, we had disco lights and we were all on our feet dancing. We also have actors in the room next door and I can control them via an ear piece. I am able to add those moments. It's very funny and more ambitious than

What do you think about the Unexpected Stars when they reveal their talent?

I've been amazed by them, I genuinely don't know how they are going to perform. The fireman in the first show is completely mind blowing. I've never heard that song sung so well, it's incredibly emotional. To be honest they have all been amazing. When I had the idea originally for it I never thought it was going to be a platform for talent. It is what it is, they are a member of the public who is going to be the unexpected star of the show. If they want to be a singer or if it's a dream for them then that's great but I wasn't expecting talent like this. The audience also just love the fact that someone is having that moment because they have seen what they have been through and they just love that they are fulfilling their dream and they are part of it.

Tell us a bit about Send To All and the celebrities you have playing it this series.

We have really good guests for Send To All; fun texts and really fun apps. I had a lot of fun! I play with peoples phones beforehand; everybody has different things on their phones. We've had people's CCTV, Carol Vorderman's fart machine, I ordered a taxi on Olly Murs' phone and there were some very private photos on Jamie Oliver's phone which are really funny. Jamie was such a great sport.

It is amazing that people just hand over their phones. Jack Whitehall appears in the show and he didn't seem to believe that people actually give me their phones! They genuinely have no idea what the text says so they are terrified. I tell everyone in Alexander Armstrong's phone that they have bad breath and he had some great responses from the likes of Hugh Bonneville, and some people got really grumpy. Jamie Oliver's text is probably the best of the series but you will have to watch to see what happens.

It was my wife's idea to do Send To All with celebrities because I was doing it my show with audience members and then I played it with James Corden and I thought that was probably as funny as it would get because that was hilarious. But we gave it a go and it seems to work. Hopefully people realise that it's just a bit of fun and will keep playing.

What new elements to the show do you have in store for viewers in the new series?

The main difference is that we have more audience hits. In the last series we just did two

surprises on the audience. That seemed to work really well so this series we've got audience hits in every show. They may be the best part of the show, they are all surprises, they are very funny, one was emotional which was surprising and it's worked really well, it's been a lot of fun.

What can we expect from the celebrity guests, comedians and music acts on the show?

There are lots of great comics on the show this year such as Russell Howard, Sarah Millican, Jack Whitehall, Al Porter and Ricky Gervais as David Brent. Every show has music in it we have the likes of Ellie Goulding, One Republic, Sting and Olly Murs. There is an exclusive from the new musical School of Rock in the first show which is something a bit different. So it's about finding the right blend and pace and setting fun things up and trying to pack as much entertainment as we can into an hour.

The effervescent Marie Joy, wife and partner to Mike Davies, passed away this week. Over the years the couple raised many thousands of Euros for local charities and organisations and were much loved and respected in the local community.

The couple also scooped a CoastRider Pride Of Spain award a few years ago. They recently celebrated 50 Golden years together and were featured in an article celebrating their life in variety theatre in last August's Torrevieja Outlook.

Author Andy Ormiston takes up the story: When you talk about Marie Joy and Mike Davies, it's the same as saying peaches and cream; both go together so well. Blue-eyed and blonde, Marie Joy was born into the theatre, her father having also been a well- known entertainer, with a tap dance routine reminiscent of Fred Astaire. Hailing from the Welsh capital, Cardiff, she started her dancing career at the tender age of three years! She appeared in Ben Jenkins' Welsh Discoveries shows and before she was 12 years old, she was singing and dancing professionally in working men’s clubs in the London area, as well as theatres throughout the United Kingdom. It was not all singing and dancing, which is hard enough, because rehearsals and keeping up school studies, wherever they happened to be performing At one point when performing in Blackpool, Marie Joy shared her digs and classes with Petula Clarke and Julie Andrews who were also child stars, later becoming famous in their own ways. Later, she worked alongside the famous North Country comedian, Frank Randall, touring with him in the revue, “Randall’s Scandals”, which in the 1950’s featured Roy Castle. Marie Joy worked during four years in the resident revue company at Butlin’s Holiday Camps and was always in great demand during the pantomime season, performing as leading lady/boy in all the favourite stories. She was billed as “Britain’s Betty Hutton”. So summertime was in the holiday hotspots of England and wintertime dedicated to clubs and pantomimes Stanley Mathews was one of her best friends as he performed with Harry Johnson a little football spot, “Football Artistry” in the Blackpool theatre where Marie Joy was appearing during the summer season in Holiday Showboat. Stanley is, of course, a football legend, the “wizard of the dribble” and Harry was captain of Blackpool FC. She remembers that during the war years, working in London, the troupe were bussed almost every evening from the London city centre theatres after shows to the quieter countryside as bombs rained on the capital.

Marie Joy met Mike Davies, then a young professional singer and compere, in 1966 at Cleopatra's Club in Cardiff. She was a bit put out when Mike told her she had to do the opening act, not always the very best spot in variety shows, so argued with him as he explained about another act that moved around the audience. She argued that he had to go and tell the manager that she was not appearing in the opening spot. So poor Mike set off to see the man with the reputation of a fiery temper, but turned round and said to her, "I tell you what, you go and tell him." So that was that and she did do the opening numbers and that was beginning of a new relationship on and off

stage.

Mike is a crooner and his performance included a tribute style act to Frankie Vaughan; on one occasion he was faced with the daunting prospect of the man himself appearing on stage at the same theatre for a week. Mike was a bit apprehensive when Frankie approached and said, "I hear you do a lookalike act of me and you're very good at it. Let's see how it goes."

So Mike put on his straw hat, clutched his cane and said, "Follow me" and both of them did the famous "Give Me the Moonlight," routine to great applause and appreciation on the part of the audience and Frankie Vaughan.

On another occasion Dorothy Squires was top of the bill and it was pouring down and there was a hole, not just a leak, in the roof above the stage. Dorothy asked Mike if he would help out, so he dutifully stood a little behind her for 45 minutes while she performed, holding an umbrella. That's Showbiz, folks.

Mike's father had immigrated to Liverpool from Lithuania with an unpronounceable name, so the clerk at the induction centre ran down a list and said, "Ok Davis you are from now on." After a brief and ‘whirlwind’ romance, that took all of six weeks; actually six days as they only met on Mike's free days, they married in August of that very same year at Lewisham Registry and the devoted couple have spent their lives together ever since.

Marie Joy maintains that it was really her mother who fell in love with Mike..and as we know, every mother wants the best for their daughter. Not only did Marie & Mike team up on a personal level, but they also teamed up professionally as a very popular double act, constantly in demand throughout the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and working extensively in ‘club land’, often sharing the stage with some of Britain best known names in the entertainment industry.

Within just three short years together, the amiable duo were voted by their peers as the ‘Number one double act’ and were selected to participate in two Blackpool and two South Yorkshire command performances. Their popularity has never waned. One of their popular comedy routines was based on "Those Little Green Apples" and their signature tune was "The Two of Us". Mike tinkles the keys of a keyboard and has composed several songs. One of those dedicated to Torrevieja, was much later included in most shows in Torrevieja.

Mari Joy and Mike ‘retired’ to Torrevieja’s Mediterranean sunshine around twenty five years ago to the dream of a castle in Spain, but soon opted for a flat in the town centre close to all the amenities with lovely Spanish neighbours around. With a wealth of talent and experience, the couple felt that they still had something to offer and made use of their entertaining skills for the benefit of local, Torrevejense charities.

Around this time, the local handicapped children’s charity, APANEE, was in the process of being formed and this particular worthy cause was able to become well established and provide services for disabled children thanks to the support of Marie Joy and Mike. They devised and orchestrated each show as a variety concert with song and dance, a splash of comedy, especially playing on the fact of Marie Joy's Welsh ancestry.

organized on 1st March, again for charity, as a nod in the direction of the lady’s ancestry.

Both being animal lovers, it was inevitable also that local animal welfare charity ‘S.A.T.’ should benefit, not only from their professional talents and fund raising abilities, but as founding members/volunteers at the local animal sanctuary, which they still do, and over time adopted three stray dogs, their last being the Yorkie “Monty”. In UK they had another Yorkie and at one venue appeared with it at the stage door where they appeared as top of the bill. The doorman refused them entry because of the dog so they walked off and phoned their agent explaining the circumstances and were immediately booked that night at another venue. So one club’s loss was another club’s gain. This underlines how popular they were at that time.

At one time they had their own show group of youngsters who could dance and sing, with one memorable sketch combining movements to a song which meant that if any one of them stumbled then the whole lot would end up battering each other, which never happened as they were all too well rehearsed. Among their many young friends were the youngsters of the Torrevieja’s “Orquesta Cecilio Gallego” who continue to play a wide range of music, typical Mediterranean sounds of the guitar, mandolin and lute.

One of their suggestions in Torrevieja was an annual charity gala, held over several years in the balmy evenings of July in the open air ‘Eras de la Sal’ theatre. An annual production that raised millions of pesetas and then tens of thousands of Euros for several deserving causes such as the ‘A.E.C.C.’ (cancer)

charity. It is a pity that this is no longer held as it brought together a lot of first class professional and amateur stars. Numerous other local charities in and around Torrevieja have also been on the receiving end of Marie and Mike’s selfless solidarity. Over their many years working for charity they have raised around quarter of million euros.

They have dozens of newspaper cuttings with show reviews such as when at Hoe Theatre in Plymouth with the Bouquet Summer Show and

25 called a “Cockney Opera” makes colourful drama headlines. It says that “Marie Joy thrills the audience with her tremendous personality, and one is left exhausted by her zest and exuberance.” One of the reasons they were successful as a team was the variety of songs they performed, which the audience all knew, the quiet comedy rapport between them that has been described as all good clean fun. When asked about her costumes she said that her mother made most of them and later she did them herself. Only with shows like pantomimes were costumes ever supplied.

Their very last farewell concert was on 24th October 2012, and as always, aimed at raising funds for local charity. Among the audience was a man who still had great memories of his family holiday in Butlin's many years ago in 1960 and still remembered Marie Joy performing. He told a story of how he loved one of the songs she sang at Butlin's and a couple of days later met her in the grounds and asked her to sing it again that evening. She patiently told him that the show was a two week review with each day a different show routine, so he would have to wait two weeks for it to come around again. He thoroughly enjoyed the last performance and wrote about it in The Call Boy magazine that deals with showbiz. Which brings us to the month of August 2016 when Mike and Marie Joy Davis celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary with some friends at a small party.

You think cardio means "I get to eat extra calories without consequence."

While exercising to burn off some energy may give you a little room for forgiveness, exercising to prepare for or undo poor eating habits doesn't guarantee you results. In fact, according to a study in PubMed, large amounts of cardio training have been shown to induce compensatory eating patterns, especially in women. It's easy to get into this mindset, but exercise is far more than just a way to expend calories.

Well-planned, properly executed bouts of activity can stimulate your body to go through incredible changes, but not if you're using food as a reward.

Does your exercise routine live and die by the treadmill? Does your workout consist of an hour on the elliptical? While you can't ignore the positive impact aerobic exercise has on your health, it may not be the dream weight-loss solution you hope for.

"It seems an awful lot of people walk, jog, run and cycle on a regular basis, hoping the time spent on the treadmill, bike or trail will equate to drastic weight loss results," says Paul Kriegler, registered dietitian and nutrition program manager for Life Time Fitness. "There's a fair amount of research on how much cardio is best for realizing health benefits, but there are a few factors that could be compromising those benefits for you."

Doing long sessions of cardio, more than 60 minutes, is rarely necessary unless you're training for a specific event. Another observational study of recreational joggers suggest you're better off capping your strict cardio time at 30 minutes and including several days per week of resistance training.

Whilst we all know what a GP does, and, providing we've seen Holby City , understand the role of a consultant, the responsibilities of some healthcare professionals might be less clear to many people. OK, so you might clearly grasp what a chiropractor is- we've all had a twinge of back ache- and have a similar knowledge of chiropody (just in case, though, that's a foot specialist). Whats On Costa Blanca recently shared a glass with Linda at The Porter House Tell us about yourselves My name is Linda and I run the Porter House bar, Altos del Limonar, along with my husband Tony and daughter Katie. We have been here for more than 8 years now. We are originally from Dublin, Ireland, and I did a lot of bar work there over the years before we came to Spain.

What made you open a bar?

The bar was originally opened and run by my uncle and I used to help out there when I could, although I was also working in another bar at the time. About 8 years ago he decided to return to Ireland for health reasons so Tony and I took it over, and have been here ever since.

Where did the inspiration for the name come from?

That’s an easy one…’porter’ is another word for ‘stout’, meaning ‘Guinness.’ Therefore we are ‘The House of Guinness.’

Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style?

My daughter Katie does a lot of the cooking as does Sonia, one of my excellent staff.

There again sometimes I do it myself. We like to serve up a combination of classic All day English breakfasts and good traditional Irish food…cabbage and bacon is an Emerald Isle favourite.

We serve straight forward food, but plenty of it like the Big Burger we do, huge thing – must be a half pounder with absolutely everything on it and a soft drink included in the price.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu?

My personal favourite is the good old Sunday roast.

Favourite day of the week?

Any day when there is music. We have karaoke several nights a week, even in the winter, with different presenters so there’s always variety in that sense. Of course there’s even more variety with the many different singers who take part. However I have to say that my favourite time of all is

But what really makes each show unique is the audience, Nigel doesn't just stand and sing: his act isn't a one sided love affair, Like the man himself, he interacts with the crowd; audience participation plays a big role in the experience. As Nigel says, “get on your blue suede shoes and get ready to jive, march, do the rock-a-hula, and act like a hound dog!”

Nigel is based in Mazarron and

performs for commercial businesses (i.e. bars, restaurants and pubs), private parties, fiestas, pool parties and anything in between all up and down the coast.

Not for nothing is Nigel billed as "the Costas favourite tribute act”. Nigel started in the business when someone told him he looked like ‘The King’ and asked him to sing an Elvis song on the karaoke.

Naturally enough Nigel’s biggest influence is Elvis. He still gets butterflies whether he performs in front of six people or 10,000.

A former bodyguard, Nigel has two best moments, once when his little boy saw Elvis on the TV and shouted ‘Daddy’ at the television and secondly when he sang to the cast of ‘Benidorm’ which he has done twice. His worst moment? The night when someone stole his bag with his stage boots in and he had to do the show in his trainer’s. “Embarrassing!” The best piece of advice Nigel received was from well-known former local resident and artist Ricky Valence who told him “Elvis would be proud of you son - keep rock n’ roll alive”. Nigel’s advice is that anyone starting out in the business should always try and be themselves and not attempt to be someone else. (Editor’s note: err.. Saturday afternoon when we have our jam session. Our jam has a more laid-back feel as it is an acoustic jam featuring acoustic guitar, banjo and, of course, singers. It is much more like the traditional jam sessions I remember back in Ireland, everyone is welcome, anyone can get up join in and we provide free food for everyone that comes along. We have Phil keeping everything together in his own relaxed style. It is often a pleasant new experience for people who may have previously only sang on the karaoke to sing with real live musicians.

A Any interesting tales?

One wild karaoke night we had two

male karaoke presenters who had gotten up together to sing ‘Sex Bomb’ by Tom Jones and had decided to strip to the waist. This was fine then halfway but through the song a lady in the audience got up and started rubbing baby oil all over their naked upper bodies. God knows where the baby oil came from. She loved it, they loved it and so did all the other people in the bar. It was totally appropriate for the song and a great time was had by all. I laugh out loud every time I hear that song now.

The Spanish Authority responsible for the collection of taxes is the “Delegación de Hacienda” (Hacienda or Inland Revenue). This is organised on a provincial basis. There is an important difference between the way in which Spanish and the British collect their taxes.

In Spain is your responsibility to obtain the tax form, to fill it properly, calculate the tax due, submit the form to the tax authorities and pay it timely.

Generically speaking, a person is considered resident in Spain for tax purposes if he or she is physically present in Spain for more than 183 days per year. Otherwise, it is considered not resident in Spain. To name a fiscal representative is the only way in which you can be sure that the Spanish Tax Authorities are able to contact you if you are not in the country, and so you may avoid damaging and expensive actions that the tax authorities may take against you for any taxes which they allege to be due.

Please note that if you do not have a tax representative, the tax authorities will send any request to your property in Spain and if no response is given, enforce it.

To enable the Fiscal Representative to perform, he/she needs written authorisation and designation by the non resident and the subsequent signature of acceptance on behalf of the Fiscal Representative himself..

Having decided that I had a terminal illness, brought about by spending too much time in foreign airports with dodgy air conditioning systems, I tried to book an appointment with my doctor. I don't normally visit his premises on account they are always full of people with disease and sickness, probably of a highly contagious character, but my symptoms were getting a tad worrying. Varying degrees of energy loss, pimples where you shouldn't get pimples and a complete lack of interest in chocolate or alcohol convinced me I needed help.

So I made a call to the surgery and got through to a woman I can only describe as suffering from a condition known as "snotty receptionist syndrome" which is untreatable.

After blatantly inquiring about every possible detail of my recent activities, she informed me that I didn't sound like I was very ill and, basically, should get on with my life without bothering her or the overworked medical profession. Not happy with this response, I repeated my request for an appointment with my GP with varying degrees of insistence until I was eventually told I could see him in a week's time.

When I suggested I might be dead by then, I can only assume that is what she hoped, as the

phone remained heavy with an air of "that's all you're going to get, lady". Yet my recently acquired mother-in-law not only gets any appointment she wants, she gets Dial-A-Ride to take her there. She also gets teams of experts visiting her at home and free coffee when taken for hospital tests. The fact that most of her problems are self-inflicted - e.g. liver failure brought about by brandy abuse, odd sugar levels undoubtedly resulting from excessive cake intake and general grumpiness about being older than she wants to be, seems to be irrelevant.

Then I have a sickly neighbour who manages to spend less time at work than anyone else, thanks to a highly developed sensitivity to anything vaguely debilitating such as lack of sleep, the need to shop and a desire to be a kept woman. So I have resorted to self diagnosis and pronounced myself with AFS - Advanced Farage Syndrome, characterised by antisocial behaviour, flailing of the upper limbs and a predisposition to direct irrational and occasionally offensive language and/or hand signals towards those who irritate me. Starting with doctors' receptionists.

Cyclists In Galecia this week, a cyclist was fined 200€ for riding the wrong way on a roundabout while using a mobile phone. This dangerous habit is common in Torrevieja as this style of short cut has been used for many years. If this incompetent Council can get its act together then the local police may fine cyclists in the future.

The latest slogan is to make cyclists aware of their vulnerability when riding in traffic. I think it sums the problem up succinctly. “Don't disappear wear your reflective gear”. Nowadays there are many things you can wear – bright reflective T-shirt or jacket – ankle or wrist bands – reflective pedals and something I have not seen before is wheel rims, which 'light up' when you are sideways on to traffic in headlights. Drivers should remember that cyclists can ride two-a-breast but local municipalities may have their own law in their town that they should ride singly in traffic. Cyclists have priority at an unmarked cross road and they can ride in a peloton (group). Also power assisted cycles (mopeds etc.) have the same rules.

Mobility The Director General of Traffic has ruled that mobility scooters, skate boards and segways are not legal on roads. The reason is mainly because they are not considered safe in motorised traffic because most mobility scooters are slower than the average

Footman James research shows there has been a boost in the number of female classic car owners, with female drivers predicted to account for 11% of the market by the end of 2016.

Research of over 1,025 women and 55,000 policies revealed that the driving factor for classic car ownership for 21% of women was nostalgia, followed by 19% who said they were encouraged by friends and family members and 17% who saw it as a good investment.

During the research process, Footman James requested that female enthusiasts share their classic car stories. A large number of women

Defining the visual future of in-car data The Ford GT program presented a unique opportunity to reimagine the instrument cluster, expanding what a connected car can be and previewing the future of Ford vehicles.

Its layout is designed around which data is most important, when to present it, and how to show information in a way that’s most expedient for a driver to process.

The design is executed on a high-resolution display that matches the sleek, purpose-driven cabin. Data is conveyed in crisp, high-contrast graphics.

To test the initial design, Le Mans winner Scott Maxwell of Multimatic® was invited to the Ford GT simulation lab to offer feedback. Maxwell suggested changing the tachometer to provide an expanded view of the EcoBoost® V6 redline approach for greater peripheral visibility. The race car driver also recommended tweaks to the prioritisation of performance information.

Getting every pixel perfect As advanced design work transitioned to putting prototypes on the road, Ford Performance reached out to suppliers at the cutting edge of data display.

Ford designers and engineers worked closely with Pektron (for electronic design, development, implementation and manufacture) and Conjure (for graphical design) to create animated renderings.

The five drive modes are easily accessed through steering wheel-mounted controls, to help keep eyes and attention on the road and hands on the wheel.

Each mode presents information differently – prioritizing what is crucial for each environment and tailoring the display to the given context.

How information is graphically displayed with each drive mode: Normal mode displays information in a purposeful manner. The theme is simple; the speedometer is centred and bold, gear selection is to the right, fuel and temperature are top left. The hockey-stick-shaped tachometer displays in a compressed scale for lower rpm, as the engine revs so quickly the lower counts mean almost nothing to the driver. The 3,000-to-7,000rpm range dominates the top of the display Wet mode carries many of the same information concepts over from normal mode, using a blue theme and a “wet floor” concept. Graphics under the speedometer emulate the shine of wet asphalt to

remind the driver of the mode selection. Sport mode adjusts information priorities. Front and centre is gear selection, with the speedometer off to the right and less prominent. It’s displayed in an orange theme and is the preferred mode for most test drivers.

Track mode presents a stark combination of black background and highly legible text and graphics, in a crisp, red theme that’s easy for the eye to pick up in a fast-paced environment. Gear selection and engine speed are displayed prominently, while coolant temperature, oil pressure, oil temperature and fuel level – rendered as a percentage rather than miles to empty – are bottom right

V-Max offers an entirely different display – purposeful and pared down. Specifically tailored to pursuing maximum top speed, it displays a large, centred speedometer, with tachometer reduced to just a line with indicator dot for minimal distraction.

Coolant temperature, oil pressure, oil temperature and turbocharger boost are displayed to the right, with fuel level displayed top left “We spent an enormous amount of time getting this just right,” says Nick Terzes, Ford GT engineering supervisor. “The result is simple, but achieving simple perfectly can be a challenge.”

Joey Hand, winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the wheel of Ford GT, raved about the different drive modes recently on a visit to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. “This is exactly what I want to see when I want to see it,” he said.

Dashboard of the Future GT isn’t the only Ford vehicle that will receive full digital instrument display technology. This innovation is coming to other future Ford vehicles – another example that Ford continues raising the performance bar while ultimately improving vehicles for all of our customers.

After unveiling the prototype in 2016, British sports car company Avatar is presenting the first production Avatar at the 2017 Performance Car Show, held at the Birmingham NEC on 12-15th January 2017.

Now fully certified, the Devon-based firm has developed the prototype, making over 100 refinements to offer a 250bhp sports car that is now equally at home on road or track. The 695kg Avatar retains the high-quality componentry such as the Ford Ecoboost engine, Nitron dampers and Rota wheels that deliver 0-60mph in four seconds and a top speed of 145mph and adds a leather interior, heated screen together with other features to broaden the appeal. New no-cost options now include an Apple CarPlay + Android Auto audio system, roof, heater and air conditioning.

“After showing the prototype we realised that our customers wanted more. We listened and have responded to our customers who loved the superb performance and fine handling but wanted more refinement and features so they could use the car for more than just track days,” says Avatar Sports Cars director Dylan Popovic.

“We’ve smoothed the raw edges to create a much more rounded package. We’ve changed the suspension geometry, adjusted the steering

rack ratios and improved the ergonomics in the cabin with intuitive switchgear as well as developed features that make the car a delight on the road and track.”

Alongside the 2.0 turbocharged Ecoboost engine, Avatar is also offering a 2.3l 350bhp option that sees 0-60 times cut to just 3.6 seconds with the Ford Focus RS-engined derivative using a six-speed transaxle. Drivers seeking a more frenetic shifting experience can opt for a paddleshift operated seven-speed sequential Quaife gearbox.

The car’s bespoke laser-cut spaceframe chassis and attractive composite bodywork is retained, alongside the offset driving position that improves weight distribution. Expanding model choice steers drivers towards electric with more than 35 plug-in models now on the market By mid-2017, UK government and industry body Go Ultra Low says more than 100,000 plug-in cars will be on UK roads1. This landmark prospect is fuelled by record electric car registrations in 2016, a year in which volumes rose 29% on the previous 12 months.

From January to December, motorists flocked to buy electric vehicles in record numbers, with 36,907 electric vehicles registered in the UK. As thousands of motorists switched-on to the cost saving and convenience of electric motoring, public and business appetite for plug-in hybrid and pure electric cars reached a new high. An ever-increasing selection of electric cars is playing a key role in plug-in vehicle uptake surpassing record levels, Go Ultra Low suggests. Today, more than 35 plug-in models are available to UK motorists – four times the number on the market just five years ago – with yet more new versions set to be launched this year.

Poppy Welch, Head of Go Ultra Low, said: “Year after year, we see record levels of electric vehicle registrations as more and more motorists realise the cost-saving and environmental benefits of driving a plug-in electric car.

January 15, 1927 Location: London, England, United Kingdom The BBC’s first running sports commentary was broadcast on this day when Teddy Wakelam occupied a wooden box at the top of the South Terrace at Twickenham and told radio listeners what was happening in the England v Wales Five Nations rugby match. There was no television in those days but the BBC came up with a simple but ingenious scheme that allowed listeners to follow the action.

The Radio Times magazine printed a reference grid that divided the pitch into numbered sectors. While Wakelam described what was going on, his background partner, C.A. Lewis, announced in which sectors the events were taking place. It is believed this is how the expression “Back to Square One” originated.

A notice pinned to the commentary box wall read “Don’t swear” – presumably a warning to Wakelam not to get carried away. The 2017 Dakar Rally is the 38th edition of the event and the ninth successive year that the event is being held in South America. The event started in Asunción, Paraguay on January 2, then ran through Bolivia and Argentina, before returning to Buenos Aires on January 14 after 12 stages of competition. With the addition of Paraguay, the Dakar will visit the 29th country in its history, the 5th on the South American continent. Then the rally will head for its longest stay so far in Bolivia and more specifically the capital city of La Paz. Argentina, which has been a part of every edition since 2009, will be the theatre for the final battle decided in Buenos Aires.

Bolivian rain forced change to Stage 7 route THE rains in Bolivia have forced Dakar Rally organisers to make an unprecedented change to the route for the first leg of the sole Marathon Stage on the 2017 event.

Stage 7 was initially scheduled to be a 622 kilometre haul from capital city La Paz back to the Uyuni Salt Flats, featuring a 322km competitive section. However the recent rains that forced Stage 5 to be cut in half and Stage 6 to be cancelled entirely prompted organisers to make radical changes to Stage 7, as well. Following the cancellation of stage 6 on the eve of the rest day, persistent bad weather conditions forced the race directors to change the course of stage 7 from La Paz to Uyuni. A statement from organisers, the ASO, stated that a new course was designed and a new road book was drafted during the rest day. The new course is an unprecedented combination of the original routes of stages 6 and 7. The 161km special will mainly take place on sandy terrain, sandwiched between a 400km link section and another one 240km long.

The special starts at 10am (local time), with the first motorcycles expected to reach the Uyuni bivouac by 3.30pm. The new route, totalling 801 kilometres, is now one of the longest of the rally on what is the event’s greatest test of man and machine. Marathon Stages are effectively two stages paired together as one, with competitors unable to get their machines serviced by their crews during the overnight bivouac in between.

This places a premium on reliability and on sensible riding or driving, as there are no replacement parts for anything they break and all work on the car has to be done by the rider or driving crew at the end of the day.

The irony of the Dakar’s weather dramas is that Bolivia is in the midst of a severe drought.

Bolivian President Evo Morales Ayma declared a state of emergency over its severity in early November, the current rains supplying water to areas that are desperately short.

The rally also brought its own water supply from Argentina in order not to further deplete Bolivia’s resources, bringing two 25,000 litre tanks for each of the four overnight stops in the country.

Organisers have also provided four 36,000 litre tanks to the Bolivian government for water transportation after learning that one of its greatest challenges was bringing water to the populations hardest hit by the drought.

The rally has spent a day in capital city La Paz, it too not immune from the drought for its now traditional rest day stop.

Toby Price the defending Dakar champion is recovering from his Dakar crash which has been complicated by a seizure, believed to be caused by a blood clot in his lung.

The reigning Dakar bikes winner Toby Price crashed out of the event on Stage 4, the impact of the shunt breaking his femur in four places.

Following the crash Price was airlifted first to base and then to La Paz in Bolivia, where he was transported by road to hospital.

He has since undergone surgery to repair the broken femur, and currently continues to recover in hospital – although according to a story on his personal website the recovery process has been complicated by both language difficulties and a seizure, suspected to be caused by a blood clot in his lung.

Honda set for Mercedes-style split turbine/compressor

By Nigel Owen Honda is poised to adopt the Mercedes philosophy of a split turbine and compressor with its 2017 Formula 1 engine as part of the revamp being planned for this season, sources have revealed.

The Japanese manufacturer and partner team McLaren have been tight-lipped about what was changing with its power unit for the season ahead as its bids to build on the lessons of its first two years back in F1.

However, last week McLaren technical director Tim Goss did confirm that there would be a

new layout and architecture for the season ahead.

The new power unit takes much of the learning from the past two seasons, but has been specifically redesigned for this season.

Although no details of the redesign have been revealed, sources have confirmed that Honda's F1 chief Yusuke Hasegawa has given the green light to Honda moving away from the compact 'size zero' concept that has been used for the past two years.

That design – aimed at making the engine packaging as tight as possible – featured a split turbine and compressor situated within the confines of the V-bank of the internal

combustion

engine.

Believing that the advantages of that concept did not outweigh the drawbacks, for 2017 Honda has decided to go down the Mercedes route which means the compressor being situated at one end of the engine while the turbo is located at the other.

Just like Mercedes has done too, the two elements of the turbo-charging system will be joined by a connecting shaft that runs between the inside of the V-bank.

As well as that, the water intercooler will be located in a niche between the chassis and the engine, which will significantly lower the power unit's centre of gravity.

Work on the changes are currently ongoing on Honda's test benches at Sakura in Japan.

Despite the dimensions of the power unit being slightly larger than before, it is understood that McLaren is still able to package a very

tight rear-end to the MP4-32 around the rear.

As well as the packaging change, Honda has been focusing efforts on improving the internal combustion unit element of its package, with it feeling it had made good gains with energy recovery last year.

It is expected that Honda will adopt a multi-jet injector system to spray fuel inside the combustion chamber, similar to the Turbo Jet Ignition system that Ferrari has put to good use.

The extent of the changes to the Honda has been possible because F1 has scrapped the engine development token system for 2017 – which means that modifications to the power units are now unlimited.

Graham Taylor Tribute According to a report from the BBC, Football is preparing to pay tribute to former England manager Graham Taylor at fixtures taking place this weekend. Taylor, who enjoyed success with Watford, Wolves, Aston Villa and Lincoln City, died aged 72 last Thursday week. A minute's applause will be held before the weekend's English Football League matches. The EFL said it was also giving clubs the option of letting their players wear black armbands during this weekend's fixtures.

As a club manager, Taylor led Watford from the Fourth Division to runners-up in the old First Division in five years, and to the 1984 FA Cup final.
