Heavy rains and strong winds for the weekend After a few days of stable and sunny weather earlier in the week, Thursday and Friday brought the rain and over the weekend the weather changes significantly. The situation for the Vega Baja is very complicated in that the Mediterranean area is 'welcoming' a mass of cold air with warm, moist wind from the east. The weather forecasters predict that we should expect between 60 and 70 litres per square meter, but in certain areas this could exceed 100 litres per square meter. Faced with this situation of possible very heavy rains, they advise everyone to take precautions in the coming days and stay informed of developments and predictions.
Another factor to consider is the wind; especially in coastal areas, where it could exceed 80 kilometres per
hour (50mph) and waves up to four meters high. The wind will be at its strongest on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday the instability

La Playa de El Cura's New Walkway Two new walkways have been installed along the beach in La Playa de El Cura and Los Locos to make it easier for people who use a walker or wheelchair to reach the water, from the promenade. The beach of Playa de El Cura is the first of three beaches in Torrevieja to install a walkway. In this case, the runway has a length of 37 linear meters, the wider beach of the Los Nรกufragos will have a much longer installation of 78 meters and the beach of Los Locos 33 metres. It is expected that all walkways will be installed next week although obviously wont's see much use until at least the Spring. Councillor for Beaches Javier Manzanares said that these platforms are not a fixed element but, as in the regulations, can be removed. He added that they are being installed in December, before the start of the bathing season of Easter, so that the council will have room to resolve any difficulties in the assembly or the structure itself once it is in use . With the three walkways Torrevieja becomes one of the locations with the most accessible beaches in Spain. Also, to complete this service, new shaded platforms for people with wheelchairs or with mobility difficulties are to be installed.

The Cucaracha Club: How Tom Watt turned Lovable Lofty into Caustic Cameron Carrington By Sandra Piddock Back in 1985, Tom Watt breathed life into George ‘Lofty’ Holloway, the amiable barman at the Queen Vic in EastEnders. Lofty had to leave the Army because of his asthma, but Tom was – and still is – pretty much obsessed with football. He played in matches for Walford Boys Club, the EastEnders’ charity football team, and became friends with Billie Anthony Gaddess, a fellow actor and now screenwriter and producer of The Cucaracha Club. Tom was impressed with the events Billie organised for the club, and when Billie confided his dream of writing a feature length spy thriller, Tom offered to appear in it and help in any way he could. I loved the idea of the set up – it had a real community feel to it,’ Tom told me when we caught up recently. ‘I’ve worked on small independent British films in the past, but they were very different to this project. It brought people together and took his friendship with Billie and the attraction of The Cucaracha Club concept that he agreed to play one of the pivotal characters. Cameron Carrington is just what you’d expect in a spymaster – ruthless, married to the job, and taking no excuses. When he tells Billie’s character George he wants his team of sangria-soaked former spies to come out of their drunken, empty retirement to rescue the ambassador’s kidnapped children, he brushes aside George’s protests with the line, ‘Nobody retires from the Service until they die.’ That just about sums up Carrington, but you get the feeling that, although he’s in a position of power, his life is just as cheerless as theirs. Tom seemed pleased I picked up on that one. ‘I see Carrington as a lonely man, and that’s how I intended him to come across.’ Director Rai Woods also visualised the spymaster as unfulfilled, and brought that out in his direction. It’s Rai’s first full length feature film, and I wondered how Tom viewed the production team, having appeared in a popular soap and a Hollywood movie. He was pretty emphatic on that one.
them out of their comfort zone, so collectively they produced something that achieved much more than they could have done individually. Coming from someone who has appeared in a Hollywood blockbuster – Tom played the Electrician in Patriot Games and was one of the few characters who didn’t get shot – that’s praise indeed. These days, Tom doesn’t do a great deal of acting. He makes documentaries for BT Sport Films, and concentrates on producing, writing, presenting and consultancy work, as well as appearing in the occasional play. It’s a measure of
There was a great community feel about the whole project, and a fantastic atmosphere. Everyone was so enthusiastic, and I respond very well to that. You have to have faith in what you’re doing, and all the different people who came together to make The Cucaracha Club had plenty of that. Tom, like the rest of the cast, delivers a fine performance, but it wasn’t all plain sailing, especially when they were filming in the Delfin submarine. It was September, and it was 40 degrees, so effectively, they were acting in a tin box. On this particular day, the performances were defined by trying not to sweat! It’s not exactly something ruthless spymasters are known for, is it? The Cucaracha Club is a very good film – it isn’t likely to win any Oscar nominations, but it has an engaging plot line that
doesn’t try to be too clever, the acting is good, the cinematography tells the story without getting wrapped up in special effects, and it looks good on screen. The Cucaracha Club 2 is already written and waiting to go into production, and the team are identifying areas where improvements can be made. I asked Tom for a professional actor’s perspective on this – how did he think the next film could be improved? Well, everywhere you look there’s room for improvement – in the writing, the acting, the shooting, the lighting. I don’t mean that in a negative way, because a major part of wanting to do another film in a series is wanting to do it better. The fact that the first one got made at all is something really special, and of course we all want to improve on what we’ve already achieved. Tom is justifiably proud of his part in the making of The Cucaracha Club, and is looking forward to being involved in the continuation of this remarkable project. Lovable Lofty has effortlessly become Caustic, Conniving Cameron Carrington, and we haven’t seen the last of him, or the rest of The Cucaracha Club team. Watch this space! A Spanish Tale of Two Hepburns By Bob Yareham Two mythical maidens have made movies in Spain, and they both went by the name of Hepburn, although they were unrelated. Katherine Hepburn, who out-acted Humphrey Bogart in the African Queen, played King Priam’s queen, Hecuba in The Trojan Women, released in 1971, and Audrey Hepburn, who entranced us all in My Fair Lady and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, was none other than Maid Marian in Richard Lester’s Robin and Marian, where she played alongside Sean Connery as an ageing Robin Hood, released five years later. Part Two: the Audrey Sherwood Forest’s theme park would today probably detract from the area’s authenticity, and even in the mid-seventies Richard Lester chose the unspoilt Orgi wood, an 80-hectare oak grove more than 4,000 years old, now a Recreational Nature Zone, to portray Sherwood Forest. In the park we saw a tree that looked suspiciously like the one that Denholm Elliot and Ronnie Barker fall out of onto the Sheriff’s men, but that might just be wishful thinking. Lester commented that the area looked like everyone’s idea of what England looked like in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The glades among the oaks where Robin acts out his second childhood do indeed seem to be as idyllic and halcyon as any English country beer garden. In Lisazo we met Manolo el Herrero (the Blacksmith),

The famous, sensuous Spanish actress Victoria Abril plays Queen Isabella, King John’s child queen who occasionally isn’t thinking about sex, while Audrey Hepburn’s Marian, gave up the life of the flesh when Robin left her for a Crusade, and now she is willing to give up everything for him, even his life. Hepburn proved her impractical nature by driving a horse and cart laden with nuns into a river during filming, a genuine accident that remained in the film. The river in question is the one that now surrounds the camp site at Urrobi, just south of Roncesvalles, where we were told by two local people that shooting took place. Marian’s ‘Abbey’ was constructed especially for the film at the Urbasa mountain range, to the north west of Pamplona, where the final battle scene also took place. Local expert Balbino García de Albizu informed us of the exact location of Hepburn’s convent, which was built at the Alto de Aranzaduia. Connery and Hepburn developed a close friendship during filming, and even attended the bull running at Pamplona’s San Fermin festival in July 1975.

Quirรณnsalud Christmas High Tea Hospital Quirรณnsalud Torrevieja (formerly known as Hospital San Jaime) is located in the North of Torrevieja, close to the Natural Salt Lake Park. Since it opened in 2002 the Hospital has developed a reputation as an important multidisciplinary centre of the highest standard. It is recognised throughout the health industry as an excellent clinical centre with the sophisticated diagnostic equipment and advanced treatment of oncological diseases. The hospital is led by a highly qualified team of 400 employees which includes 80 doctors and nearly 200 nurses.
On Thursday the Hospital invited local journalists along with those from various clubs and associations to a fun and relaxed High Tea at La Laguna Hotel as both a chance to network and a thank you for the continued support from the International Community. Almost 50% of their patients come from different countries, mostly from Western Europe. To communicate easily and closely with their patients they have qualified interpreters who speak 15 languages, including English, French, German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian Russian, Italian, Arab, etc. and
polyglot administration staff. Many of the doctors and nurses speak English. One of the ambitious projects of the hospital is the creation of an International In-Patient Area where the overriding priority is the needs of their foreign patients, with multilingual staff and an in-house translator. From The Prairie To Passchendaele By Keith Nicol On Wednesday, former Director of the Foreign Residents Office, Graham Knight, accompanied by Joy Lennick and Andy Ormiston, welcomed guests to the official book launch of Graham's Grandfather's book, 'From The Prairie To Passchendaele" by Fred Knight. In WW1, Fred fought with the famed 'Canadian 10th Infantry' and was awarded the Military Medal for his conspicuous bravery and although suffering from Parkinson's he managed to write out part of life's story which Graham had kept under wraps for years and finally decided that in his own retirement years, it was a story worthy of being told. Graham took the hundreds of pages of foolscap paper to local prize winning author Joy Lennick back in 2015 with the book finally being published on Remembrance Day, 11/11/2016. Graham said:
“Next year, 2017, marks the centenary of Passchendaele, one of the more famous battles of WW1 and it's fitting that his story be told now and also it and can reach out to new audiences.� Andy spoke of his own grandfather and family fighting in WWI and terrible consequences suffered by those who returned without limbs, shell shocked or disabled in some way. Back in WWI, today's post combat syndromes were not understood. Many soldiers on both sides who were suffering from shell shock were often put before their own firing squads by officers who were totally out of touch with the realities of this first ever trench warfare, and the fatigue that common soldiers suffered through. Publishing the book was a labour of love for Graham, who felt it fitting that his Grandfather's manuscript should be published and available for one and all. Jokingly he did mention that if a certain Mr. Spielberg was looking for a new blockbuster film, that he'd be delighted to talk about the rights. The book is available on AMAZON by searching for 'Fred Knight' or 'Joy Lennick' and will soon be available for downloading for the Kindle and iTunes.

Holland America Line is amplifying its destination immersion experiences with the launch of Explorations Central, or EXC, as it will be called. The multifaceted EXC experience combines a wide array of indispensable travel resources with enrichment opportunities for guests that make their travel experience more engaging, vivid and meaningful.
EXC will also feature the transformation of the Crow's Nest on some ships to create a newly named venue, Explorations Central, as a comprehensive resource and engagement centre. Princess Cruises illegally polluted British coastline then lied to cover it up Princess Cruises has been fined US$40 million after pleading guilty to illegally polluting the sea and trying to cover it up. The illegal dumping came to light back in August 2013 when a newly-recruited engineer, working on Caribbean Princess, reported a so-called 'magic pipe' being used to illegally get rid of oily waste off the coast of Britain. The fine - the largest of its kind - will send a strong message to the entire cruise industry, said John Cruden, assistant attorney general for the US Justice Department's environmental division. He said Caribbean Princess broke the law, covered it up and then lied about it. "The pollution in this case was the result of more than just bad actors on one ship," he said. "It reflects very poorly on Princess's culture and management. This is a company that knew better and should have done better. Hopefully the outcome of this case has the potential not just to chart a new course for this company, but for other companies as well." Alongside the fine, the US federal court also ordered that 78 ships belonging to other brands owned by parent company Carnival are subject to a five-year environmental compliance programme. These include ships of Holland America Line, Cunard Line, Seabourn Cruise Line and Costa Cruises. Princess cruises, based in California, pleaded guilty to seven felony charges relating to polluting and intentional acts to cover it up. The Justice Department said the 3,192-passenger Caribbean Princess had discharged oily waste into
the sea for years through a 'magic pipe' that bypassed the ship's waste treatment system. One discharge, on August 26 2013, involved dumping 4,227 gallons just 23 miles off the coast of England within an 'Exclusive Economic Zone'. At one stage, the chief engineer of the ship held a 'sham meeting' in the engine control room pretending to look into the allegations while holding up a sign stating 'LA is listening', which staff believed to be referring to the company's headquarters. As part of a major investigation, five other Princess ships were found to have been involved in illegal activity. This included using clean sea water to trick onboard sensors that would otherwise have detected that improperly contaminated bilge water was being discharged. The Justice Department indicated the motive was financial, as the chief engineer who ordered the dumping off the UK coast told staff it cost too much to offload it properly. A statement from Princess Cruises said: "We are extremely disappointed about the inexcusable actions of our employees who violated our policies and environmental law when they bypassed our bilge water treatment system and discharged untreated bilge water into the ocean." It said once it had been made aware of the allegations it launched its own internal investigation and discovered illegal practices on some of its other ships. "Although we had policies and procedures in
place, it became apparent they were not fully effective. We are very sorry that this happened and have taken additional steps to ensure we meet or exceed all environmental requirements," it said. "In fact, over the past three years we have implemented a number of corrective measures to improve our oversight and accountability. For example, we completely restructured our entire fleet operations organization including new leadership. We also increased the scope and frequency of our training, and proactively invested millions of dollars to upgrade our equipment to new ship standards to ensure compliance with all environmental regulations. "The marine environment is incredibly important to us and we are using this experience to further improve our operations. Princess Cruises stands committed to environmental practices that protect our oceans."

Indexing: what’s that? By Ray Kearney When we were younger we had fads like the yoyo, conkers, push-penny, marbles and the hulahoop, to name but a few. Today we have our armchair brain teaser crosswords, Sudoku and logic puzzles. We also have computer games, TV, Netflix, Facebook, instagram etc. The problem with these activities is the overwhelming feeling that we have wasted a few hours of our lives. There is no feeling of achievement. We accomplish nothing; we have not contributed to making this world a better place. Yes, we can share funnies and interesting stories but the closest we ever get to making a difference is when we can sign a petition for a worthy cause. Indexing is fast becoming a world-wide phenomenon with half a million people of all ages from 115 different countries indexing genealogical records. One million records are indexed every single day and so far over one billion records have been published for free through FamilySearch Indexing. Unlike other leisure activities, indexing is a very rewarding and worthwhile activity that is not hard or complicated. The basic requirements you need are the internet, a computer and to be able to read, your age and mobility are irrelevant. Do you qualify?
Public and church records have always been recorded in large books where each entry is made as it happens. Occasionally an event such as a birth, christening, marriage, death or burial is recorded out of sequence, but generally the events are in date order. That’s all very fine for the person who recorded the information but not so good for the person, who years later is trying to find some information about a specific event. Let’s think for a moment about an English dictionary. Imagine if the person compiling the dictionary wrote down words with their explanations as he thought about them and NOT in alphabetical order. How easy would it be for a student to look up the meaning of words randomly spread throughout this book with nothing in alphabetical order? With the click of a button, names entered in a computer can be sorted alphabetically by surname, Christian name, maiden name, place or date. The only problem is that all public and church records until recently have been handwritten, they are not on computer. This is where volunteer indexers help; they enter all the relevant details from handwritten volumes, word by word onto their computers. Over the last 100 years The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints has microfilmed millions of records from most countries in the world. On https://familysearch.org/indexing/ there are almost 400 active projects to choose from in 13 different languages. The images from
these projects are divided into small manageable batches. As I am Irish I am fascinated by the Irish birth, marriage and death records from 1864 to 1913. At the moment there are seven different UK parish records ready to be indexed each containing thousands of names. Indexers choose the project that most interests them and on the click of a button download batches to work on. Literally all and indexer has to do is read the registrar’s entry, made at the time of the event, and type the required information into their computer. The FamilySearch/Indexing program does all the rest by sorting the information they have typed into usable indexes. Now future generations will be able to find their ancestors quickly and for free. John Lennon: Songwriter, Singer (1940–1980) “If someone thinks that peace and love are just a cliché that should have been left behind in the '60s, that's a problem. Peace and love are eternal.” —John Lennon Thirty Six years ago, on December 8th, 1980, the music world was robbed of one of its most influential characters when former Beatle John Lennon was murdered outside his Manhatten Residence. The singer-songwriter was one of the founders of the Beatles, a band that impacted the popular music scene like no other before, or since. John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, England. He met Paul McCartney in 1957 and invited McCartney to join his music group. They eventually formed the most successful songwriting partnership in musical history. Lennon left the Beatles in 1969 and later released albums with his wife, Yoko Ono, among others. Elvis Presley's explosion onto the rock music scene inspired a 16-yearold Lennon to create the skiffle band called the Quarry Men, named after his school. Lennon met Paul McCartney at a church fete on July 6, 1957. He soon invited McCartney to join the group, and the two eventually formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in musical history. McCartney introduced George Harrison to Lennon the following year, and Harrison and art college buddy Stuart Sutcliffe also joined Lennon's band. Always in need of a drummer, the group finally settled on Pete Best in 1960. The first recording they made was Buddy Holly's "That'll be the Day" in 1958. In fact, it was Holly's group, the Crickets, that inspired the band to change its name. Lennon would later joke that he had a vision when he was 12 years old—a man appeared on a flaming pie and said unto them, "From this day on, you are Beatles with an 'A.'" The Beatles were
discovered by Brian Epstein in 1961 at Liverpool's Cavern Club, where they were performing on a regular basis. As their new manager, Epstein secured a record contract with EMI. With a new drummer, Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey), and George Martin as producer, the group released
their first single, "Love Me Do," in October 1962. It peaked on the British charts at No. 17. Lennon wrote the group's followup single, "Please Please Me," inspired
primarily by Roy Orbison, but also fed by Lennon's infatuation with the pun in Bing Crosby's famous lyrics, "Oh, please, lend your little ears to my pleas," from the song "Please." The Beatles' "Please Please Me" topped the charts in Britain. The Beatles went on to become the most popular band in Britain with the release of such mega-hits as "She Loves You" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand." Lennon married Cynthia Powell in August 1962. The couple had one son together, Julian, who was named after Lennon's mother. Cynthia was forced to keep a very low profile during Beatlemania. She and Lennon divorced in 1968. He remarried the following year, on March 20,
1969, to Japanese avant-garde artist Yoko Ono, whom he had met at the Indica Gallery in November 1966. Beatlemania In 1964, the Beatles became the first British band to break out big in the United States, beginning with their appearance on television's The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964. Beatlemania launched a "British Invasion" of rock bands in the United States that also included the Rolling Stones and the Kinks. Following their appearance on Sullivan, the Beatles returned to Britain to film their first film, A Hard Day's Night (1964), and prepare for their first world tour. The Beatles' second film, Help!, was released in 1965. That June, Queen Elizabeth II of England announced that the Beatles would be named a Member of the Order of the British Empire. In August 1965, the foursome performed to 55,600 fans at New York's Shea Stadium, setting a new record for largest concert audience in musical history. When the Beatles returned to England, they recorded the breakthrough album Rubber Soul (1965), noted for extending beyond
the love songs and pop formulas for which the band was previously wellknown. Lennon left the Beatles in September 1969, just after the group completed recording Abbey Road. The news of the break-up was kept
secret until McCartney announced his departure in April 1970, a month before the band released Let It Be, recorded just before Abbey Road. Solo Career Not long after the Beatles broke up, in 1970, Lennon released his debut solo album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, featuring a raw, minimalist sound that followed "primal-scream" therapy. He followed that project with 1971's Imagine, the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed of all Lennon's postBeatles efforts. The title track was later named No. 3 on Rolling Stone magazine's "All-Time Best Songs" list. Lennon and Ono moved to the United States in September 1971, but were constantly threatened with deportation by the Nixon Administration. Lennon was told that he was being kicked out of the country due to his 1968 marijuana conviction in Britain, but the singer believed that he was being removed because of his activism against the unpopular Vietnam War. Documents later proved him correct. (Two years after Nixon resigned, in 1976, Lennon was granted permanent U.S. residency.) Tragic Death In 1980, John Lennon returned to the music world with the album Double Fantasy, featuring the hit single "(Just Like) Starting Over." Tragically, just a few weeks after the album's release, a deranged fan, shot Lennon several times in front of his apartment complex in New York City. Lennon died at New York City's Roosevelt Hospital on December 8, 1980, at the age of 40. John Lennon's assassination had, and continues to have, a profound impact on pop culture. Following the tragic event, millions of fans worldwide mourned as record sales soared. And Lennon's untimely death still evokes deep sadness around the globe today, as he continues to be admired by new generations of fans. Lennon was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Happy Xmas (War Is Over) By John Lennon By Keith Nicol John Lennon and Yoko Ono wrote this in their New York City hotel room and recorded it during the evening of October 28 and into the morning of the 29th, 1971 at the Record Plant in New York. It was released in the US for Christmas, but didn't chart. The next year, it was released in the UK, where it did much better.
featuring artists like The Ronettes and Darlene Love. Unfortunately, the album was released on November 22, 1963, which was the same day US president John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and the album sold poorly as America was focused on news of the killing. This was originally released on clear green vinyl with Yoko Ono's "Listen, The Snow Is Falling" as the B-side.
John and Yoko spent a lot of time in the late '60s and early '70s working to promote peace. In 1969, they put up billboard advertisements in major cities around the world that said, "War is over! (If you want it)." Two years later this slogan became the basis for this song when Lennon decided to make a Christmas record with an anti-war message. John also claimed another inspiration for writing the song: he said he was "sick of 'White Christmas.'"
At the beginning of the song, two whispers can be heard. Yoko whispers: "Happy Christmas, Kyoko" (Kyoko Chan Cox is Yoko's daughter with Anthony Cox) and John whispers: "Happy Christmas, Julian" (John's son with Cynthia). This being a Phil Spector production, four guitarists were brought in to play acoustic guitars: Hugh McCracken, Chris Osbourne, Stu Scharf and Teddy Irwin. McCracken had recently played on the Paul McCartney album Ram. Jim Keltner played drums and sleigh bells, Nicky Hopkins played chimes and glockenspiel. Keltner and Hopkins were part of Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, and a third member, Klaus Voorman, was supposed to play bass on this track, but got stuck on a flight from Germany. One of the guitarists brought in for the session cover the bass - which one nobody seems to remember.
The children's voices are the Harlem Community Choir, who were brought in to sing on this track. They are credited on the single along with Yoko and The Plastic Ono Band. Lennon and Ono produced this with the help of Phil Spector. Spector had worked on some of the later Beatles songs and also produced Lennon's "Instant Karma." It was not Spector's first foray into Christmas music: he and his famous session stars (including a 17-year-old Cher) spent 6 weeks in the summer of 1963 putting together A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector,
Lennon was shot and killed less than three weeks before Christmas in 1980. The song was rereleased in the UK on December 20th of that year. This has been covered by The Alarm, The Cranes,
The December People, and Melissa Etheridge (in a medley with "Give Peace a Chance"). The Australian artist Delta Goodrem also covered this in 2003. She received special permission from Yoko Ono to record the song. When Lennon first played his demo for Phil Spector, the producer remarked that the song's opening line, "So this is Christmas...", was rhythmically identical to the Paris Sisters' 1961 hit "I Love How You Love Me," which he produced. Though now a Christmas standard, Lennon originally penned this as a protest song about the Vietnam War, and the idea "that we're just as responsible as the man who pushes the button. As long as people imagine that somebody's doing it to them and that they have no control, then they have no control."

After Hours at the STAR OF INDIA Tell us about yourselves My name is Preet (pronounced ‘Pritt’ in English) and I, my father and several other members of our family own and run the ‘Star of India’ restaurant in San Luis. We have been here almost 5 years now. What made you open a restaurant? I am originally from India but have lived in Spain for 11 years. I came here first of all to study but, after working in several restaurants and learning the trade as they say, I decided that I would like to have my own restaurant. My family and I had been living in the San Luis area for some time and had made friends with a lot of people and it seemed right to open our place in this area.
Where did the inspiration for the name come from? The premises where we are located in San Luis Square was previously an Italian restaurant which I and some of my local friends frequented sometimes. Not long before opening some of us were trying to think of a name and one of them, Dom, who later became a valued customer of ours, came up with ‘Star Of India’ and so we went with that. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? My father does most of the cooking and we do mainly traditional Indian food. However we are well aware that we have a truly International clientele with obviously varying tastes so we are more than happy to cook to order.
“Keep the customer satisfied”, as they say. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? My personal favourite is Chicken Bhuna. This may surprise some people as they tend to assume that all people from India prefer strong spicy dishes. Chicken Bhuna is a medium dish but it has lots of flavour and I absolutely love it, especially when it is cooked by my father. Favourite day of the week? Favourite day? I love them all. We have made so many friends here that have become regular customers and every day we have people we know coming in to eat and to chat with us. If I had to choose a day I would go for

We also arranged for a ‘Bollywoodstyle’ dancer to entertain us and our customers. We were expecting an Indian girl but when she turned up she spoke no English or any of our dialects to us, only Spanish. We were a bit perplexed at first. However when she got into costume and danced she looked more ‘Bollywood’ than Bollywood! She was amazing. In the end we found out she was from Russia. Christmas Carols Start the Festive Season In Torrevieja It almost didn't happen, but thanks to the efforts of Band Master and host for the evening Bill Singleton and others, this year's carol service took place. As in previous editions, the concert of carols in English in the Plaza de la Constitution took place for the sixteenth consecutive year. The event featured local
choristers from many of Torrevieja's clubs and associations, some councillors of the municipal corporation, mostly from the PP and Suenos Torrevieja and one or two from local government. The Mayor did not attend. More
than
two
thousand
torrevejenses of different nationalities, mainly of British and Scandinavian origin, gathered at the front door of the Church of the Immaculate Conception to sing the most popular and famous AngloSaxon carols, beginning with British punctuality at 5.30pm and finishing an hour later. New this year were
Christmas themed laser images projected on the facade of the church. Music was provided by the "Phoenix Concert Band"who are mainly composed of British musicians retirees and residents in Torrevieja, while the choir is composed of more than a hundred choristers of various nationalities.

Trio of Futuristic Cars Arrive for Holiday Window Display on Park Avenue Should you happen to be going to or be in New York City, for Six Days Only - December 14 - 19, 2016, at 432 Park Avenue, there is a very special little car display. Questions of the future are in everyone's mind. What's the future of cars, and our mobility? "The Future of Automobility" holiday window display was unveiled this week at 432 Park Avenue. The display is curated by Stanford University Professor Michael Shanks of the Center for Design Research and the Historic Vehicle Association. On display are the: Shell Concept Car (2016) From today one of the world's most efficient internal combustion cars. Spearheaded by Shell, the project challenged the limits of current technology. Together, Gordon Murray Design, Geo Technology and Shell created a compact and nimble city car with reduced weight and friction that achieves 89 mpg. This is its first New York appearance. The 1956 Firebird II concept car was one of the industry's first vehicle concepts that explored automated driving. The concept had an electronic brain that connected to a future highway called the Safety Autoway, which was equipped with metallic

By Andreu & Alenda Lawyers On September 18th 2015 one of the biggest scandals in the car industry erupted in the worldwide news. The American Environmental Protection Agency certified that Volkswagen cheated on their emissions tests with nearly half a million TDI diesel cars. The American E.P.A declared they found that the TDI cars contained “a sophisticated software algorithm”, which detected when the car was being tested for emissions. When a car was being tested, the software drastically reduced the emissions as compared to normal driving, indicating to testers that the car passed the levels required. The origin of this came about in order for VW to meet tougher emissions standards regulations that went into effect in 2008. It started with most automakers supplying their diesel cars with tanks of an urea-based solution (often referred to as “AdBlue”) that cuts down on nitrogen oxide emissions to protect the environment. The reason that Volkswagen included this software in their cars instead of using the urea solution and its machinery, was to keep the cost of its diesel cars lower, as diesel cars tend to be more expensive than gasoline simply for the extra hardware it takes to make them run cleanly. Experts say that it’s possible that restricting emissions in a way that complied with the law would have reduced the power and fuel economy that the TDI engines are known for. This decision gave them a direct benefit translated into more sales and higher market share, as well as a better competitive position in respect to other brands. But at the same time Volkswagen violated its "good faith duties" and attacked "consumer confidence" by producing deception and violating environmental protection laws. This is the origin of the largest settlement ever for an auto maker in the USA: a $15-billion deal for customers compensation, plus more than $17-billion to cover the costs of the ordeal and an unspecified amount for further penalties, civil and criminal actions. The final reckoning for Volkswagen is likely to cost the company billions more.

The Only Production Car Banned For Being Too Fast By Nigel Owen The Capri Perana was produced by Basil Green Motors of Johannesburg South Africa torun the 302 Ford Windsor V8 engine, and became South Africa’s fastest locally produced car eclipsing more exotic rivals. Developed by Basil Green, the car won the South African championship three times under the name Z181 before being banned perhaps due to the car winning every race it entered that year with one solitary exception. The name Perana was a deliberate misspelling of the word Piranha describing the ferocious fish found in South America, the model was the only Capri ever fitted with a big V8 that was officially sanctioned by Ford.
The Perana was manufactured between 1970 and 1972, during this period between 500 and 550 examples were produced the precise figure is unknown as no records exist to confirm production figures. Ford and Green had originally planned for 800 vehicles to be produced but this never materialised, at launch the car cost around £2200. Development of the vehicle was undertaken by Basil Green motors who worked closely of Ford of South Africa. Production was split across two sites, the Capri – minus engine and gearbox was manufactured at Ford’s facility in Port Elizabeth, and the rolling chassis’s were transported to Basil Green Motors in Johannesburg for completion. The car was an official Ford sanctioned product and was sold through the Ford dealership network in South Africa; the car even retained its Ford manufacturer’s warranty. The car was based upon the Mk 1 Ford Capri 3000 XL albeit with a strengthened shell, Basil Green installed a V8 engine from the Mustang along with a four speed close ratio top loader manual gearbox. Optionally the car could be fitted with a Ford C4 3 speed automatic gearbox. Power was delivered to the rear wheels through a Borg Warner Limited Slip Differential that was taken from the Ford Falcon with slight modifications.
The Perana was fitted with a Ford 302 Windsor 90 Degree V8 with a bore and stroke of 101.6mm x 76.2mm giving rise to a 4,949cc displacement with a compression ratio of 9.3:1. The power plant was fitted with a high lift Motorsport camshaft with solid lifters, fuel was fed to the engine through a four barrel Holley 460 CFM Carburettor. A large capacity radiator and unique exhaust system, both built to Basil Green’s exacting specification completed the setup. In this guise the unit produced 281 bhp @ 5,800 rpm and 300 lb/ft of torque @ 3,500 rpm – a colossal improvement over the three litre Essex powered Capri’s. Fuel economy, whilst not at Mini levels of frugality was certainly very good considering the units output potential and matched very closely those achieved by the Capri 3.0.
The front Macpherson struts were completely rebuilt with modified valves and stronger spring rates, the suspension being lowered by 1.5” and made stiffer to compensate for the extra weight. The brakes remained standard but had up-rated friction material (expensive Ferodo DS11 pads being fitted) with front discs and rear drums. It was not possible to retain the standard setup for the rack and pinion steering system due to the position of the larger V8 sump. To resolve the problem the Perana was fitted with an inverted left hand drive rack that was mounted on the back of a modified front cross member, the front struts were swapped from side to side to relocate the steering arms. The drive shafts for the Perana were custom produced
in Australia and imported to exacting Basil Green specifications. The Perana was only available in two colours in Peri Peri Red or Bright Yellow, a few cars did slip out of the factory in other colours including Gold and Mustard yellow. Visually the cars were distinguished from the 3000XL through the lowered ride height and twin black stripes running alongside the bonnet and along up the side of the rear windows – all Perana Capri’s had a matte black boot lid finish. The car retained the XL badges on the front wings but had a discreet V8 badge on the bootlid and bonnet. The appearance was enhanced through the fitting of 5” x 13” Chrome Rostyle wheel fitted with 185/70 tyres. Many of the cars were fitted with a rear window louver although this was an optional extra the majority of cars left the factory with this fitted. The Capri Perana V8 could achieve 60 Mph from rest in 6.1 seconds, powering on to a top speed of 147 Mph such was the power of the engine it was found that at 150 km/h the car had a fifty percent reserve of power. The torque characteristics of the engine allowed the car to accelerate in top gear from 12 Mph all the way through to the vehicle's top speed (147 Mph).
The car was phased out in 1972 at the same time that Ford decided to discontinue the Mk1 Capri, during its short production run somewhere between 500 and 550 Perana Capri’s had been produced making this a very exclusive Capri. Mclaren Automotive Builds Its 10,000th Car By Keith Nicol This week McLaren Automotive celebrated the manufacture of its 10,000th car from the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, England. The 10,000th car, a McLaren 570S finished in Ceramic Grey paintwork from the McLaren Special Operations ‘Defined’ palette, rolled out of the Production Centre just over five years after the first car, a McLaren 12C, was completed. Commenting on the moment that the car left the Production Centre, McLaren Automotive Chief Executive Officer, Mike Flewitt, said: “The production of the 10,000th McLaren is a significant milestone in the short history of the company. The fact that it took us 42 months to build our 5,000th car and just 22 months to build the next 5,000 speaks volumes about the pace of development of the company. Much of that development is thanks to the introduction of the Sports Series family of cars and it’s therefore fitting that the 10,000th car is a McLaren 570S.” In early 2016, a second shift was introduced into the McLaren Production Centre to cater for the increased volume thanks to the introduction of the
Sports Series family, today comprising the 540C, 570S and 570GT. This took capacity at the Production Centre from 10 cars per day to 20 cars per day. 2016 also marked the announcement of the company’s third year of profitability in the first five years it has been producing cars – unprecedented in the automotive industry. McLaren is also on target to almost double its sales this year compared to 2015, from 1,654 cars last year to over 3,000 cars in 2016, of which over 90% will be exported. This volume increase is thanks, in large part, to the ramp up in production and success of the Sports Series models.
Like the McLaren Technology Centre, the McLaren Production Centre was designed by Foster + Partners and took 14 months to build, from breaking ground until the 18 July 2011 when the first car, a McLaren 12C, was approved for shipping. Since then, the McLaren Production Centre has been the only location where McLaren cars have been built, from the initial 12C and 12C Spider, through to the 650S and 675LT in the Super Series, as well as each of the 375 highlybespoke McLaren P1TM cars. Today, the McLaren Production Centre employs around 750 people out of a total of approximately 1,750 employed by McLaren Automotive. McLaren Automotive is a British manufacturer of luxury, high-performance sports and super cars, located at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking, Surrey. For the past 30 years, McLaren has pioneered the use of carbon fibre in vehicle production and since introducing a carbon chassis into racing and road cars with the 1981 McLaren MP4/1 and 1993 McLaren F1 respectively, McLaren has not built a car without a carbon fibre chassis. and/or the head-up display, depending on the vehicle equipment. Speed limits, exit signs, ‘no overtaking’ signs and other signs – and of course the corresponding ‘end of...’ signs are displayed. The driver is provided with up to date information. To make sure that the information is as accurate as possible, the on-board computer compares three sources: traffic signs detected by the camera, information from the navigation device and current vehicle data. In some cases, even dirty or
damaged signs can be displayed correctly. In addition, the system calculates whether traffic signs are plausible, relevant and currently valid. The incorporation of the rain sensor is particularly smart. By David Hudson I recently read an article about a man who punched his girl friend in the face that knocked out one of her teeth while driving his car between Dolores and Almoradi. He got a five year restraining order and a five thousand euro fine but should have got five years in prison. The Spanish call this “Malos Tratos” (domestic or sex violence) and such incidents have dramatically increased during the last two years. The Spanish government has taken seriously this very seriously and has a special number: a 016 hot line is available for anyone who sees or is involved in this unacceptable act of violence. The number of women killed this year has been unacceptable. A joint PP and PSOE committee has been formed to encourage the fight against domestic and sex violence and protect women aimed at Municipalities and Autonomous Governments.

Road Rage
This got me thinking of road rage and how it is accepted as one of those things. But no account is taken about the effect this has on the victims. Just two personal examples to show what happens. The first is what is called “mugging”. Angie and I had just arrived in Madrid and were enjoying ourselves when we were attacked by three men. I was hit with wooden sticks and as I fell down I saw Angie clutching her bag while the person was banging her head against the wall until she let go. For the first time I felt vulnerable and frightened but Angie lost 50% of her hearing.

There was a lot of tooting from him but I continued for another few hundred metres and stopped outside a house when my driver's door was pulled open and while still with the seat belt on I was kicked and punched while the man screamed “Ingleses”. He stopped when his girl friend said enough. The police were not interested in the attack. Later I told my friend, Segundo, about what happened and I said that if you see a driver advancing aggressively towards you, then lock your doors. A few days later he experienced exactly the same but he locked his doors saving him from a beating but his door suffered.

While I was talking about his problem to Angela and Joy, Joy told us about a similar experience in her estate with a large car cutting a corner. The driver was pointing the car rather than
turning the wheel, causing her to stop. She waited while the driver sorted himself out and she squeezed through. As she turned a corner she found the narrow road blocked by the car and the driver advancing menacingly. Joy always locks her doors so she sat looking ahead not wanting eye contact. With the driver banging her door and shouting she sat trying not to show she was frightened. Finally the driver spat at the car and left leaving a very frightened women. Both Angie and Joy say that most men want to get in front of women drivers no mater what the road conditions are. Is road rage a result of the thrill of speeding and the acceptance that the other driver was responsible for causing a problem? Are television adverts and motor programmes a factor in wanting to drive fast? Often when talking about a car it is the speed and acceleration that are the main talking points. Very rarely a car is shown about its design or comfort and never the consumption yet in the 60s while I was working for British Leyland in the printing department we saw a change of promotion by the company. It was realised that the wife played an important part in the purchase of a car. They then made promoting a new model on design,
colours, materials and comfort an important part of their campaign. Why has this changed? The growth of car programmes must take responsibility. Even a laid back programme “Wheelers Dealers” or “Jewels on Wheels” (the Spanish name) that saves classic vehicles and sells them on and always talks about speed and acceleration rather than any other benefit. Is there a solution? First like “malos tratos” there needs to be a change of attitude regarding “road rage” before anything can be achieved. Another point must be that
driving under the influences of drugs has now overtaken driving over the alcohol limit. 30% of drivers are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Therefore be wary following a vehicle that is being driven erratically because it may not be a bad or inexperienced driver but they could be under the influence. Just a few tips for the visitors. When picking up your hire car one of the things that could catch you out is driving on the “wrong side of the road”. A tip that Angie told me is to keep to the centre of the road. This means that at junctions and roundabouts you should be on the right side of the road. It would be helpful if the passenger would warn the driver at lapsed moments. The Spanish law for unmarked roundabouts is that the inside lane is for overtaking. I recommend that you indicate all the time so that other drivers are aware of what you are doing. Though it is not a traffic law, a Guardia Civil told me that if you are using another drivers car have a letter signed by them giving permission with their details and NIE number and your details with passport number. If you are stopped and the officer is not satisfied with your explanation then this could save you unnecessary problems. The original way of turning left is to leave the carriageway and cross at right angles. Though this has almost disappeared in tourist areas these crossings are around, so be careful.

CD Montesinos 7 – 1 Deportivo Orihuela The game started at a frenetic pace, with Monte maintaining the momentum of the last few high scoring games which has seen the side climb up into third place. Following the game against Deportive Orihuela, CD Montesinos supporter's club "The Full Monte" made their annual substantial donation of groceries to the needy of Los Montesinos. This was gratefully received, with the knowledge that The Full Monte would hope to continue this event within the limitations of the supporters club. CD Montesinos' final game of year is an away game with Grupo Caliche C.F. on Saturday 17th December. Kick-off 5.30pm. This will be played at Anexo Pistas Atl David Martinez, Calle Av De La Torre, S/N (3190). Pilar de la Horadada. Hard to swallow! Match Report: Jefferson Scott Hard to Swallow Torry lost this final home match of 2016, but it was hard to understand how. They trailed at the interval, but in the second half they pummelled the opposition goal, even had the ball in the net, but nothing seemingly could provide them with a recognizable score. Chances thundered one after the other in lightning strikes on the Paterna goal, but always the ball stayed resolutely out of the net. Matheus, Lewis, Damian, Luis Carlos and others peppered the visiting goal to no avail. In the end, it was frustration and worry. The worry at the end of the game centred around striker Lewis Allen, who once more, ran himself ragged and played with his usual fearlessness. He took worrying knocks to the head in both halves and at the conclusion of the match had to be held
up by staff as he appeared to faint and when questioned had no recollection of the game. The ambulance whisked him to hospital for a cat scan and kept him in overnight as a precaution. Duco scored the only goal of the game in the 27th minute. He made a dart in the box to get his head on the end of a cross whilst all the Torry defenders stood and watched. The manager was furious and this defensive "sleeping" has now become a part of Torry's character. At the start of the second period, Pedreno sacrificed central defender Pecha for Mattheus and he certainly added much more sparkle to Torry attacks. Along with Lewis, Damian and the ever consistent Luis Carlos, he skated down the left flank, taking on defenders and getting them in a blue funk. However, no matter how often Torry got into exciting positions to score, it simply wouldn't happen. From the stand strikers Pastor and Hugo were perplexed, eager to be on the pitch to remedy the malaise. Both are likely to return to action in Borriol this coming weekend, but it is hard to see how the manager will accommodate them, as the majority of strikers played well. It was just not their day. Robles and Soto try hard and both had started the game in Crevillente midweek where Torry fought back to level the scores from a two goal deficit, only to concede from a corner to lose 3-2. Robles retained his place in the starting line up, but Soto made his customary appearance as a substitute. Both struggled to make an impact. Buba also looked dazed after he had clashed with his own defender Calzado and actually came off the pitch after treatment with Lucas ready to replace him. However, Buba insisted on continuing and Lucas still awaits his debut. Torry has now gone six consecutive games without a win and have two away games left in 2016. This weekend at Borriol, who sit immediately above them in the table. Then a midweek tie at Almoradi before the Christmas break. These matches must produce wins if Torry
are to rest peaceful over the holiday period and enjoy the festivities. Torrevieja CF 2- 2 CD Dolores After a great start to the season, a run of draws and loses now sees a talented Torrevieja CF team placed 13th out of a group of 16 teams in Regional One. However the division is very tight and as they approach midseason, they still have everything to play for. Santa Pola lead the division and look to be strong contenders for promotion next season. Other Local Sports Torrevieja Gymnastics Club, Ninth in the Championship of Spain Absolute.
Last weekend Torrevieja's Rhythmic Gymnastics Club participated in competition at the Palace of Sports of Murcia in the Spanish Sets championship in the top Absolute category. On Friday torrevejense girls Ana Vera, Blanca Tomás, Carla Pérez, Olga Pérez, Patricia Gallardo and Camila Martínez, did a fantastic exercise that placed them provisionally sixth in the standings. After their regular exercise routine, they finished in ninth position out of a total of 50 participants. This season these girls have been more than outstanding, as they have managed to become provincial champions and chosen to represent Valencia in the Spanish Cup: the only alicantino club in that championship, where they came sixth in Spain and runners-up in Valladolid in the autonomous championship.
