Costa Blanca Turns White Living up to its name as the 'White Coast'. For the first time this century snow fell in the region and after a gap of 91 years Torrevieja was dyed white. It started snowing lightly on Wednesday January 18, 2017 at 8.25 as the first snow flakes copiously began to fall throughout the municipality. Schools stopped for a few minutes, people ran to windows and everyone that could enjoyed the scene. This unusual and historical element was predicted by our local weather company the Mastral Project although few chose to believe it would actually happen. While a light dusting of snow may have happened 91 years ago, we actually have to go all the way back to January 2nd 1914, to the last time Torrevieja had snow lying in the streets, but no matter what, January 19, 2017 will forever remain a historic day in the City of Salt. The snow, followed by heavy rain and even hailstones throughout the regiion has led to the possible cancellation of a number of events, and so if you are planning on visiting the

Half Marathon in Santa Pola or other weekend events, it's worthwhile checking they are happening before heading out. Two events in La Mata, Torrevieja look to being cancelled or postponed: the blessing of Pets as part of the San Anton celebrations and the day of the pig, an outdoor picnic, due to the predicted rain this weekend.

Interview With Pablo Garcia, Creator Of Spain’s First Movie Tourism Package Tour By Bob Yareham

dish is the morteruelo, a warm game meat pâté. There is a local spirit, called Resoli, a kind of coﬀee liquor; and we can´t forget the local sweet; Alajú, made of honey and almonds. A couple of local restaurants have developed a special menu included in the package tour.

The irst time I met Pablo he impressed me by making fun of the English; later he endeared himself by making fun of the French. I don’t usually like to be a tourist and to go around in a group, but when I joined a guided tour of Cuenca led by Pablo, I admit that it was serious fun; informative and a laugh a minute. Pablo has been collaborating with us in the preparation of a set-jetting route for the province of Cuenca, and on February 4th at Cuenca’s Parador Hotel, precisely where Pierce Brosnan stayed while shooting (quite a lot actually) The World is not Enough, Pablo will be presenting the complete package. This is the irst time in Spain that a movie tourism package has been oﬀered; other organisations have only made lists of ilms made in their area, whereas this is a complete guided tour of the locations where some important Hollywood ilms have been made. But let’s let Pablo explain. You speak good English Pablo; how did you learn? I spent 7 months in Plymouth during the last year of my degree in Geography. Of course I improved it since I work as a Tour Guide. We have welcomed many British, American and Australian clients in the last years. Which ilms have been shot in the province of Cuenca? A lot of them, but the most famous is probably EL CID shot in Belmonte´s Castle in 1961, with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren. Some years later they shot The Four Musketeers in Uclés monastery with Oliver Reed and Richard Chamberlain. The last one was a James Bond movie, The World is not Enough with Pierce Brosnan in an amazing location Los Callejones de Las Majadas inside the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park. Also in the same Park Arnold Schwarzenegger worked in one of his irst movies Conan the Barbarian. Sergio Leone’s irst ilm in Spain, The Colossus of Rhodes and Cary Grant’s Pride and Passion were also partly ilmed there. They also

shot many Spanish movies in the Old Town of Cuenca like Calle Mayor, one of my favourite Spanish ilms. Which speciic locations will the movie tourists visit? Three cultural landscapes Uclés Monastery, Belmonte and its castle and Cuenca which was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1996, as well as an impressive natural park: Los Callejones where we can enjoy the erosion of limestone caused by atmospheric elements like rain and wind in the last millions of years. What kind of accommodation can you oﬀer? The best hotels in town, like the Parador, an old 16th century monastery, and Posada San José which was a school from the 17th to the 20th century, and is run by a Canadian lady. For those who prefer quiet places outside the town we also oﬀer a couple of cottages. Do you take care of the transport? That´s right. Our visitors just need to manage transportation to the accommodation they chose. We´ll pick them up at their hotel to start the tours. Our van is a luxury Mercedes Benz for up to 8 people. Is Cuenca easy to get to? Since they opened the high speed train station it takes less than one hour from Madrid or Valencia to get here. Will there be any other activities apart from seeing the ilming locations? Of course, cultural activities like the old town city tour and wine cellar tour in La Mancha. Also adventure sports in the Natural Park like kayaking, horse riding, canyoning, archery, etc. All optional of course. Does Cuenca have interesting gastronomy? Yes, it does. The most famous local

For the Maple Brown Butter, melt 4 tablespoons butter in a 8-inch skillet on medium low heat. Cook and watch carefully until it turns frothy and slightly brown. Remove from heat immediately. Stir in maple syrup and tarragon. Meanwhile, bring 4 cups water to a simmer in a 10-inch non-stick skillet. Carefully crack eggs, one at a time into the low simmering water. Poach for about 3 minutes or to desired doneness.

The Streeters Biography Three talented guys hailing from totally diﬀerent walks of life have come together through one common passion, to form one of the most successful and admired bands of the moment. The Streeters have soared to success, making an impact on music lovers throughout Murcia and Alicante; and proving that age and nationality pose no boundaries when it comes to music. The band plays a blend of music to suit audiences of all ages, from sixties and seventies classics, by the likes of The Doors, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix; to contemporary hits from The Killers, Bruno Mars and Farrell Williams. Similar to their wide ranging musical repertoire, the band members themselves form quite an eclectic mix, with Lead Vocalist and Bassist, Oscar hailing from Bolivia, Drummer and Percussionist, Sergio being Spanish; and Lead Guitarist, Austin, originating from Rotherham, England, who aged just fifteen years old, has become a real focal point for their audiences. It was in fact this infusion of young talent, pointed out to QR by an enthusiastic groupie, that also sparked our interest in the up and coming, relatively new band on the block. El Niño Magnetico Better known to his friends and fans as “El Niño Magnetico”, Austin was born and raised on music, with his Dad and Manager, Bryn, encouraging his growing interest from an early age. The family moved to Caravaca de la Cruz when Austin was four, where he has grown up mainly listening to Spanish Artists, and was bought his irst Spanish guitar when he was nine. He took private guitar lessons for a time, and also attended a workshop with the Animeros of Caravaca, although conirms that his best learning tool was the internet, from which he would sit and watch hours worth of tutorial videos on You Tube. It soon became apparent that Austin was a

natural, and he began to receive invites to perform and record material with other musicians, including the band Neuman; and Spanish Indie Rockers, Love of Lesbian, who invited him to join them for a few songs during their two sold out concerts in Murcia. Austin cites Fito y Fitipaldis, Mark Knopler, Jimi Hendrix and Muse as his main inluences. Early Days As his confidence and musical talents expanded, Austin’s hunger for performing live also spiralled, and he hooked up with Oscar, to form his first band, Magnetic Jukebox, in February 2014. Oscar was certainly no stranger to music, having begun singing at the age of eleven, and taking it to a professional level in 2008. He had previously been involved in local bands including Arroz and Roll, The Berry Chuckit and eighties rock band, The Verbenas. However, his musical talents and ability to read music originally evolved with the accordion, which he learned to play when he was just six years old, and went on to teach whilst studying music at University. The Streeters Within a month of their joining forces, Oscar and Austin teamed up with Drummer, Sergio; who was also known for his amazing appearances with Los Springers, Los Duques and Los Fanaticos; and thus, The Streeters was born! Already boasting a solid fan base, the band is now in great demand, with back to back performances booked at various venues throughout the year. Regular gigs include Monroe’s Music Pub, Torrevieja; Pablo’s Bar, Playa Flamenca; Lansdowne, Playa Flamenca; The Hen’s Teeth, Villamartin; and The Arches Bar, Las Alcazares and The Village Inn, Balsicas. The band can also be seen performing along with an additional Bass Guitarist, Alberto, as Magnetik Surf, when Oscar explained that they perform a slightly different set, comprising more classic rock tracks.

A Night To Remember: Seabourn Encore Christened In Singapore Seabourn, the world's finest ultra-luxury cruise line, formally introduced Seabourn Encore to the world at a festive evening ceremony pier side in Singapore today. International recording artist and world's best-selling soprano Sarah Brightman presided over the naming ceremony as godmother of the new 600-guest ship, the first of two new allsuite vessels for the company. Guests and VIPs joined Seabourn staﬀ to enjoy the vibrant, entertainment-illed launch festivities as a projection screen showed the climactic moment when Brightman sent a bottle of champagne smashing against the bow of the ship, a time-honoured ship christening tradition. A host of local musicians and cultural acts, including lion dancers and stilt walkers, energized the event to send the ship and its guests oﬀ in style.

BBC Worldwide launches its first bespoke channel for cruise ships There has always been a strong demand for BBC content within the travel and hospitality sectors including cruise ships so launching a bespoke global entertainment channel on MTN TV alongside BBC World News is an obvious step. BBC HD will be the one-stop shop for the best of British TV content. BBC Worldwide has launched a global entertainment channel, BBC HD, the company’s irst channel produced exclusively for cruise ships and the wider maritime market. It will go live through Global Eagle Entertainment’s (GEE) MTN TV network, with P&O Cruises and Cunard being the irst to oﬀer this to their guests.

Content on the new channel will cover all genres ranging from drama, comedy and factual entertainment to natural history and documentaries. Fans of much loved soaps such as Eastenders, Holby City and Casualty will be delighted to know that these will air on BBC HD close to the UK broadcast so they can stay up to date with their favourite shows as they enjoy their cruise holiday. Ray's Rant: The UN; a force for good in the world? By Ray Kearney The United Nations was founded 72 years ago this year, shortly after the end of World War II. Today the UN membership is an impressive 193 countries. The UN is best known for the multinational peacekeeping force normally deployed to keep opposing factions apart on agreed or disputed borders. The UN and all its various branches became synonymous with “Peace, help, aid and fairness”. If the UN said something, it had to be right, after all, it was the entire human family coming together to ensure balance and fairness. Organizations can become corrupt, bigoted and unfair and the UN is not an exception. Bullies emerge who try to control others. The UN has an inner sanctum called “The Security Council” made up of 15 member countries, 5 of whom are permanent. These 5 permanent members have more power than the other 188 member countries. If some of the permanent members want a little country to be reprimanded, sanctioned or even invaded they can have the Security Council vote for resolutions and sanctions whether they be fair or not. Some years back the Security Council was assured by two of the most respected permanent members that Saddam Hussein of Iraq had vast stores of weapons of mass destruction. We were

told that the proof was 100% certain; the whole world was in danger from this madman. This war was approved by the Security Council and the madman was toppled. Unfortunately or fortunately, no weapons of mass destruction were ever found. A clever and well-engineered lie had started the invasion of a sovereign state. The bombing of Libya led to the toppling of another madman, General Gadhai. ISIS was born and nurtured as a result of these two UN approved invasions. The UN regularly passes resolutions to keep rogue nations in check. In 2016 the UN passed a total of 24 resolutions, amazingly 20 were passed against Israel. With all the strife in the world, with all the terrorist activity perpetrated by ISIS and other Islamic terrorists, why is the UN so biased against one little country; half the size of Ireland? Why did outgoing President Obama orchestrate last month’s UN Security Council resolution against Israel? Last week the “Paris Peace Talks” were designed to manoeuvre Israel into a corner, demanding adherence to the failed two-state solution, conceived in the 1970’s and became oﬃcial UN strategy in 1993. In June 1967 Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq backed up by Kuwait, Algeria, Sudan and Saudi Arabia gathered an army of 465,000 troops, almost

3,000 tanks and 800 military aircraft besieging Israel and declaring that they were going to promptly obliterate them. The UN did not intervene. As the best form of defence is attack in a situation like this, the Israeli air force destroyed the Arab ighter planes on the ground in a preemptive strike and after just six days Israel accepted a proposed ceaseire from a position of strength. They had pushed the besieging forces back and regained some of their own territory that had been stolen from them centuries earlier including a portion of Jerusalem. The Arab aggressors then wanted the occupied territories they had “gambled and lost” to be returned to them. When you go to war, shed blood and then lose, you’ve got to live with the consequences, ask Germany. The Palestinians want Israel to give up their land which historically had been theirs anyway. Israel wants peace but the Palestinians won’t even sit down with the Israelis until they give this land to them. The Palestinian Authority is using the UN to pressure Israel. The Palestinians believe that there should be no negative consequences to their aggression, past or present. The lands referred to as the “occupied territories” should be more correctly referred to as the “Israeli Reoccupied territories”. So now you decide, is the UN what you thought it was? Is the UN a force for good and fairness in the world?

Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Moon By Keith Nicol 1972, Pink Floyd appeared at The Guildhall, Portsmouth, England. This was the irst time that they were able to perform the whole of what became the The Dark Side of The Moon album in its entirety, with the previous night's performance in Brighton having been halted for technical reasons. Released on March 1st, 1973, I eagerly purchased a copy of their eighth LP on release day, took it home: carefully placed it on my Technics 1200 Turntables, pulled the curtains; hit the play button and didn't move from my seat until it was time to lip oer to Side B. Always more of an album orientated group, the album did spawn a couple of classic tracks which just about short enough in length to make their way onto Radio Station playlists. However, their 1973 epic album changed the way people made and listened to albums.

When it comes to pure statistics, the numbers attached to The Dark Side of the Moon are pretty impressive: more than 45 million copies sold worldwide: consistently ranked in the Top 10 of many best-albums-ever-made polls: 15 straight years on Billboard’s album chart. The album’s 10 songs land with a massive force. From the opening heartbeat instrumental “Speak to Me” to the soul- and mindcleansing closer “Eclipse,” The Dark Side of the Moon made deep, heavy records — ones without obvious radio singles, even though “Money” almost hit the Top 10 — a commercial mainstay for the rest of the decade. It set up Pink Floyd for the rest of their career. It made headphone listening a required luxury. Developed during live performances, an early version was premiered several months before, on this day in 1972, and recording began; new material was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at Abbey Road in London. The group used some advanced recording techniques at the time, including multitrack recording and tape loops. Analogue

synthesizers were prominent in several tracks, and snippets from recorded interviews with Pink Floyd's road crew and others provided philosophical quotations throughout. Engineer Alan Parsons was responsible for many distinctively notable sonic aspects and the recruitment of non-lexical singer Clare Torry. The album's iconic sleeve, designed by Storm Thorgerson, depicts a prism spectrum and represents the band's lighting, the record's thematic material, and keyboardist Richard Wright's "simple and bold" design request. The album was an immediate commercial and critical success; it topped the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for a week and remained in the chart for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988. With an estimated 45 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd's most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling worldwide. It has been remastered and re-released twice, and covered in its entirety by several other acts. It produced two singles, "Money" and "Us and Them", and is the band's most popular album among fans and critics, being ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time. The popular single release from the album was 'Money'. This song is about the bad things money can bring. Ironically, it made Pink Floyd lots of cash, as a promotion for the album. The song begins in an unusual 7/8 time signature, then during the guitar solo the song changes to 4/4, then returns to 7/8 and ends in 4/4 again. When Guitar World February 1993 asked Dave Gilmour where the famous time signature for "Money" came from, the Pink Floyd guitarist replied: "It's Roger's riff. Roger came in with the verses and lyrics for 'Money' more or less completed. And we just made up middle sections, guitar solos and all that stuff. We also invented some new riffs we created a 4/4 progression for the guitar solo and made the poor saxophone player play in 7/4. It was my idea to break down and become dry and empty for the second chorus of the solo." Roger Waters is the only songwriter credited on this, but the lead vocal is by David Gilmour. Waters provided the basic music and lyrics, while the whole band created the instrumental jam of the song. Gilmour was the one overseeing time change and responsible the acclaimed guitar solo. Many studio effects were used on this song. They were using a new 16-track recorder, which allowed

them to layer sounds much easier, but complex studio techniques like this still took a long time to do in 1973, as there weren't digital recorders and samplers available like we have today. If you wanted to copy and paste something, you had to do it the hard way - with a razor blade and splicing tape. Roger Waters put together the cash register tape loop that plays throughout the song. It also contains the sounds of tearing paper and bags of coins being thrown into an industrial foodmixing bowl. The intro was recorded by capturing the sounds of an old cash register on tape, and meticulously splicing and cutting the tape in a rhythmic pattern to make the "cash register loop" effect. The tape loop used on this was about 20 feet long, and if you've ever seen a reel-to-reel tape machine, you can imagine how hard it was to keep it playing. In order to get the right tension and continuously feed the machine, they set up the loop in a big circle using microphone stands to hold it up. It was fed through the tape machine and played throughout the song. As happens throughout Dark Side of the Moon, random voices come in at the end. Waters drew up lashcards with deep philosophical questions on them, then showed them to people around the studio and taped their answers. The ones they liked made the album. Tiny Spanish village mourns death of their most famous son who became the billionaire behind Corona beer He may not have made each residents of village he grew up an overnight millionaire but the man behind Corona beer has left a lasting legacy in his birthplace. Antonio Fernandez, who went on to become the CEO of Grupo Modelo, the brewery company who make the popular beer died a billionaire aged 99 in August 2016. The 77 residents in the tiny Spanish village of Cerezales del Condado were left perplexed by news articles claiming the billionaire had left each of them a share of his enormous fortune for living in his birthplace. Villagers confirmed the fairy tale was not entirely accurate, as he had left the money to his family in his will. Although the beer tycoon had no children of his own, he was one of 13 siblings and his fortune has been handed to his extended family.

Many of them still visit for some months each summer, so it is great for the village and keeps it alive, according to The Locals. The villagers won't be sharing in that inheritance directly. So, villagers may not be rolling in cash overnight, but Fernandez's impact on the place he grew up has outlived him. Every summer he would visit, and he paid for the restoration of the church and square, brought running water to every home in the town, funded the resurfacing of roads and founded a cultural centre for the village. Maximino Sanchez, owner of the village's only bar - which only stocks Grupo Modelo beers - told local newspaper Diario de León: 'I do not know what we would have done without Antonino. We used to have no money.' Fernandez' fortune was believed to be the equivalent to each villager inheriting roughly £2million. Fernández was born in 1917 into grinding poverty and at the age of 14 he had to leave school because his parents could not afford the fees. After the Spanish Civil War he moved to Northern Spain, where he married his wife Cinia González Díez. In 1949, his wife's uncle, who owned Grupo Modelo, invited the couple to move to Mexico, where Fernández began working for the brewery, as a warehouse employee. He worked his way up through the ranks, and by 1971 he had risen to CEO and he helped make Corona not only Mexico's most popular beer but also a huge export phenomenon, including in his native Spain where it is sold under the Coronita brand. He maintained his position as CEO until 1997

and as Chairman of the Board until 2005, with both roles later taken over by his nephew Carlos Fernández González. He also remained as the Honorary Life Chairman of Grupo Modelo until his death. Corona Extra is the second most imported bottled beer in the United States, with annual sales of $693million Fernández was also a well-known philanthropist who never forgot his motherland and was honoured by the former King of Spain, Juan Carlos, for his charitable deeds, including his work with disabled young people. He established an organisation in Leon called Soltra, which offers employments opportunities to disabled people, as well as a similar company

named after his wife, Cinia, which operates in Mexico. He also set up the 'Cerezales Antonino y Cinia' Foundation in his hometown in 2009, to support rural initiatives in the area.

After Hours at REFLECTIONS BAR & RESTAURANT Tell us about yourselves My name is Chris and I am one of a group of four people who own and run ‘Reflections’ Bar & Restaurant in San Luis. The others are my good friends Craig and Claire and my partner Lara. I am from Norway and the other three are from England. I came to Spain 5 years ago on work experience intending to be here for just a few months. Then I met Lara and I stayed! What made you open a bar/restaurant? We all worked together in a busy successful bar in the Torrevieja area. It was hard work but good fun and we became firm friends. Eventually we decided that we wanted the hard work and good fun… but as our own bosses. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? It was already called ‘Reflections’ and we decided to leave it as it was, especially as it was already well-known by that name. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? Craig is the head chef, ably assisted by Claire plus my brother Kim. I would describe the style as truly international as between them they have experience of preparing dishes from many parts of the world. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? My personal favourite is steak, along with the variety of sauces and ways of preparing it that

Well my mother lives nearby and is officially retired but spends a lot of time here attempting to run the place. We don’t mind because we all love her but people often say how we all came here to be our own bosses and when she’s around we’re not! Also one of our waiters, James, is No.2 in Europe at high-jump, under-19 level and he can move incredibly fast. We always joke that if you are intending to ‘do a runner’ without paying your bill make sure he’s not on duty ‘cos you won’t get very far! the three of them come up with. They are all agreed on their favourite dish, the lamb shank, made with Craig’s own recipe. I am quite partial to it myself, even though as a favourite dish the steak just edges it.

Favourite day of the week? I like Mondays. It’s supposed to be a quiet day but we always seem to be busy. We do a 5€ meal deal from 12 until 5 every day except Sundays. Back Stage Interview This week we caught up with Dave Rawson, Comedy Hypnotist, Magician and Game Show Host. Audience participation is the key word with his ‘Push The Buzzer’ game show, Who are you, what do you do. I am a Professional Comedy Hypnotist and Magician. I am also a game show host. How did you start in the business? In 1980 whilst I was still serving in the Royal Navy as a Medic in Submarines, the Paul Daniels Magic Show was on BBC and from that moment, at the age of 21, I became addicted to Magic. I have entered a few Magic Competitions and won quite a few awards in my younger years. I didn't start learning hypnosis until I was 33. The submarine we were on visited Florida and I went to see a Hypnotist show and was immediately fascinated. It was from that moment I decided that when I left the forces, which would be 7 years later, I would turn Professional and go live in Spain. Since being a Professional Entertainer I have worked all over the world, Hong Kong, Thailand, Goa India, USA, Egypt, Canaries, Spain and the U.K

A few years ago I decided to add another string to my bow and invented a TV style interactive Gameshow. It involves all the audience splitting into teams and having a remote control buzzer. It's now been going successfully in Ibiza for the past 4 years and in the UK. What would you be doing if you were not an Entertainer? From the age of 17-40 I served in the Royal Navy in Submarines as a Medic. I was always a joker and would make all the crew laugh. Every week I would write and produce a ships magazine full of fun and laughter. So as soon as I left I knew that's what I would do professionally. I have no idea what I would have done if I weren't an entertainer as am useless at DIY and cooking.

What was your best moment? Turning Professional and getting paid for something I love doing.

Who was your biggest inluence? The Paul Daniels Show on BBC in the 1980s

What's the best piece of advice? Never ever give up. Keep knocking on every door; someone will eventually let you in Any interesting tales or anecdotes? When I have people hypnotised, I choose a girl and ask her which famous person she would like to meet. They normally say David Beckham, Robbie Williams etc. and then I put them back to sleep and when they wake up they think I am that person. It's hilarious they have their photo taken with me then I ask them if they want a kiss. They always say yes. I then turn the joke round on myself and say as soon as you kiss me you will wake up and just realise they have kissed me and not their favourite star.

Do you get nervous? Yes every time I perform in a venue where I've never been before

Chiropractic instrument (almost) faster than speeding bullet Perhaps surprisingly, chiropractic treatments are not just reactive to conditions that are already developing. Focus on one to two diet changes and be deliberately active with your life. Monte didn't even own a pair of running shoes when he started running and now he runs several miles a week. What kind of activity do you like to do? What the activity is at irst doesn't matter, just get moving," Dr. Roussell says. Stop drinking your calories After Monte made his decision to change his life and put his health irst, he did a quick audit of his diet and realized that a simple place for him to cut calories was beer. "Calories you consume in beer, wine or sugar sweetened drinks (energy drinks, soda, even sports drinks) are easy calories to cut out. Make sure nothing enters your mouth that doesn't support your goal of weight loss while adding beneicial nutrients to your diet," Dr. Roussell says.

Be a mindful eater and strategic snacker Monte steered away from fad diets that demonised certain food groups while exalting others. Instead he focused on eating unprocessed foods and veered away from fast food joints. Diabetes patients often skip eye exams: Survey By BPT The leading cause of blindness, diabetes, is steadily growing and is expected to affect one in 10 people worldwide by 2040, the International Diabetes Federation predicts. As prevalent as the condition is, 79 percent of Americans don't know diabetic eye diseases have no visible symptoms and more than half do not know comprehensive eye examinations can detect diabetes. Those findings are from the 2016 American Eye-Q Survey conducted by the American Optometric Association (AOA).

"In 2014 alone, eye doctors found diabetes-related manifestations in 240,000 patients who were not aware they had diabetes, leading to a prompt diagnosis and care which minimizes the risk of complications," says AOA President Andrea P. Thau, O.D. "A comprehensive eye examination with a doctor

of optometry is important not just to maintain eye and vision health but can be a first line of diagnosis for many systemic diseases." The AOA advocates for regular, dilated eye exams for those with diabetes, or at risk for diabetes, because the alternatives, like online vision apps, only check for refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism and cannot detect diabetes. "When the eyes are dilated, an eye doctor is able to examine the retina for signs of diabetic eye disease and prescribe a course of treatment to help preserve an

individual's sight," Dr. Thau says. The survey, designed to drive education of eyehealth issues, also found that people diagnosed with diabetes are acutely aware of its effect on eye health and are more likely than the average American to worry about their eye health. Only 54 percent of people with diabetes who were surveyed regularly visit their doctor of optometry to understand the toll diabetes is taking on their overall eye health. Confidence-boosting tips for fitness class first-timers By BPT You've joined a health club and now you're curious about fitness classes. You're almost ready to sign up for an indoor cycle, yoga or strength-training class, but something stops you. You feel nervous and uncomfortable and decide to wait. Group fitness classes are a fantastic way to exercise because you're guided by an expert, plus the energy of the group keeps you motivated. However, because it's something new that puts people outside their comfort zone, it's common to feel apprehensive in the beginning. To help you gain confidence to try any type of group exercise class, consider these tips from three health club members. Comfort over style. "Trust me, no one cares what you're wearing," says Deb Kampe, a member at Life Time, which operates 122 destinations across the United States and in Canada. "If you want to wear gym shorts and a T-shirt, do it. Head-to-toe athleisure? Do it. A tutu? Do it. Just make sure you're comfortable and safe. Don't spend a fortune on the latest fitness clothing trends or labels. Expensive does not equal better." Don't be self-conscious. "It's easy to assume everyone in class is fit, knows all the moves and is judging you. No one cares," Kampe says. "Once the music starts and the instructor begins, all eyes are up front taking direction and being lifted into the moment."

Everyone was a newbie. "Everyone was a first-timer at some point, so they know how it feels," says Dustin Meriwether, member at Life Time. "They're not going to judge you for it, and many - hopefully all will be willing to answer any questions and help in any other way." Instructors want to assist. "All instructors and other members want to help you," says Kelby Mezzenga, member at Life Time. "So just walk in and let the instructor know you are new or have a question. That welcoming feeling takes the edge off and chances are, you'll have met a new friend." Keep an open mind. "Group fitness classes are designed to challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone. You may be unfamiliar with the equipment you'll use or how hard it might be, but I guarantee you will feel the burn," Mezzenga says. Listen to your body. "You know your body best," says Meriwether. "If something doesn't feel right or if you

know you have problems with something, modify the workout correspondingly. People do that all the time and many instructors are good about suggesting such modiications." Give it 100 percent. "You get out what you put in," Meriwether says. "If you put in minimal effort, you can expect minimal results. But if you give it your all, you can expect some pretty fantastic fitness changes." Bring water. Hydration is important, but you don't need to worry about anything else. "Life Time has everything you'll need for any class, from yoga mats to towels," says Mezzenga. Celebrate victories "During the cool-down and stretching segment of class, take a moment to celebrate your victory," says Kampe. "Look around, everyone no matter what their age and ability will be seriously sweaty, all there with you sharing the same endorphins. Take that feeling with you and own it. By Keith Nicol February is just around the corner and that means carnival time for many of us. Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, pancake day, call it what you will, along with the Chinese New Year, Ash Wednesday, St. Valentine's Day: so lots of love, roses and chocolates throughout the month, and least we should forget, we should look forward to the greatest party of them all: St. Patrick's Day on March 17th. In Spain, St. Paddy's means a fun illed afternoon in Cabo Roig, but more about that later. Torrevieja has any number of great Fiestas throughout the year, and although details have not been coming to us thick and fast, that most colourful and fun of iestas, Carnival will start during the irst week of the month. The Carnival Contest Parade starts from Plaza María Asunción, just outside of Mullins Irish Pub, and continues along Calle Ramón Gallud, past the Virgin del Carmen Cultural Centre, with the main focus being just in front of the Town Hall Square and inishing at Calle Patricio Pérez street. Here is both a Sunday afternoon parade, which is for the younger ones and a few of our everygreens, such as The Rascals, and he Walking Football fever is now taking oﬀ and those 50 and over who fancy kicking a ball around again, ladies included, can now take part in Walking football. One of the more popular spots for the sport is Los Monteinos on a Tuesday morning at 10.00am. It all helps us work of those festive kilos follow those New Year's resolution to loose a few kilos and get itter during 2017. There are at least another half a dozen local teams, with most of them advertising their playing times in local bar windows. During the winter the The Rojales Craft Market is open on the 1st Sunday of each month in the morning from 11.00am to 2.00pm. It's is a fun place to visit if you are looking for small a gift, piece of art or decoration, don’t miss the monthly Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales. Local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. Also on the 1st Sunday of each month is the Ace Cafe Classic Car event, on the street outside La Torre Hotel in Los Montesinos from 11.00am to 1.00pm. Admission is free. Kids of all ages are invited to attend the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the friends of the railways association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4.00pm and 8.00pm with Miniature Train Rides during February and March on the 2nd Sunday from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Every month the Friends of the Railways Association host a miniature train event at the railway museum in Torrellano. Donations of 1.50€ per visit are requested. Least we forget, that most romantic day of the year, St. Valentine's is on 14th February, so girls, stop dropping those hints now about romantic presents, chocolates, diamonds, dinner for two and all that, to your man now, just in case he should forget. And ladies, if he hasn't popped the question yet, why not get down on your bended knee

and put the pressure on him in front of hundreds of people, to say 'yes'.

Torrevieja is just one of the local cities that celebrate the Easter Processions with style. The event is classified as of National Interest and is supported by the Costa Blanca Tourism Board. The main parades take place on the Monday before Easter, starting at 10.00pm and on Good Friday starting at 8.00pm, although there are parades and activities every day. There are also major parades in Pilar de La Horadada, Orihuela and Elche, to name but a few.

The are three dates in March that it's impossible to ignore in Spain, no matter how we try: St. Patrick's Day, San Jose or Father's Day and Easter: the Semana Santa. Around the Southern Costa Blanca there are also a few gastronomic events that allow you to enjoy a diﬀerent taste of Spain. Looking forward just over a month, on Friday March 17th, Cabo Roig is turning green for St. Patrick’s Day and hosting

a fabulous parade and party to celebrate Ireland´s national saint. Last year parade was the largest in Spain and this year's looks like being even bigger. The strip will turn into a sea of green for the day, with all the Bars & Restaurants oﬀering all things Irish including Food, Drink, Music & Hospitality together with face painting,

In Torrevieja, once again the 100+ members of the International Cofradia Of Jesus In The Garden Of Olives will be taking part. This prestigious group has been followed by the Media across the Spanish speaking world and has been much admired and respected by most of its Spanish counterparts since its inception in 2005. With thousands of Spanish and many other Nationalities illing the streets of Torrevieja for these splendid processions the atmosphere is something to behold for those who are lucky enough to be a part of this moving Spanish Tradition. The Locust Eaters Does anyone else possess locusts? It seems that my kitchen is full of the things, or some other invisible beasties that rampage through the fridge and destroy everything I have just bought - rendering my latest supermarket trip useless. By Janet Kelly

The only items that seem to remain untouched are pickled onions, fromage frais, natural yoghurt and lentils. Carrots and parsnips don't go down that well, unless required for snowman body-parts but apart from that the only other things to remain sacred are the Golden Syrup, on account you can't get the lid off, and the capers. There is usually something lurking at the back of the fridge that has been rejected by the locusts in the past - but only after having been "tested" first. This requires unwrapping enough of it to ensure it goes mouldy, but not enough to ensure someone (me) throws it away.

I wouldn't mind so much but I seem to spend hours planning various meals only to ind the cheese I bought for lasagne has been fed to the dog, Sunday&#39;s chicken taken to school for an experiment - and sausages liberated as part of some bizarre adolescent ceremony, usually involving smatterings of witchcraft. Any attempts at a healthy diet, as a ploy, are completely wasted. The rabbit had the last Savoy Cabbage I purchased, and the oatmeal was thrown to the birds. The squirrels got there irst and now demand same on a regular basis so porridge is literally out the window from now on.

I forever look forward to the day when the locusts leave home and have to feed themselves on student grants or trainee's wages. I bet even they ind the prospect of lentil curry with glazed root vegetables and a natural yoghurt dip if not exactly appealing, then certainly within their budgets.

LEGALISING AN EXTENSION ON YOUR PROPERTY By Andreu & Alenda Lawyers Some times our clients decide to build an extension to their property or to modify the terrace or the solarium with an extra room. Last week we talked about the legal procedure to follow in order to build an extension or modification according to the law. So, once the works are finished, and have been done according to the project as drafted by the technicians, it is presented before the Town Hall and according to the license granted, we always recommend to apply for the title deed called “declaración de obra nueva” (statement of new building works). When a builder finishes a building or any kind of property, they must provide this title deed. This title deed is granted before a public notary, and it has a detailed description of the property built, the different spaces/rooms and the total square meters built. This title deed must be inscribed in the Land Registry. Is it mandatory to grant this deed? If you are a builder or developer, the declaration of new work is mandatory. But if you are a private individual who builds on your land for your personal use, you must apply for a declaration of new work deeds if you want to sell, rent or to submit this for a mortgage loan. You might ask, why? Because the legal description doesn’t match with the physical reality of the property. This might lead you to some problems. You will need to apply for a new habitation certificate. If you want to sell your

property, the buyer will request that you to have all your documents correct because they will need to apply the Town Hall for a habitation certificate in order to contract service supplies for the house. In this case they will need a certificate signed by a technician stating that the house remains the same as it is inscribed in the Land Registry. If the extension isn’t declared, they will not grant this certificate and your buyer can sue you for damages. Where do I apply for it? The declaration for new building work is granted before a public notary but your solicitor can help you to ensure you have all the paperwork necessary for that purpose. The notary controls the legality of having obtained all the licenses, authorizations and requirements required by law. Which documents do I need? This title deed is granted by the owner of the property, so he will need to bring their national identity document and the N.I.E. number if you are a non-

HABITATION CERTIFICATE OR FIRST OCCUPANCY LICENSE From the year 2013 onwards, the first occupancy licenses will now have 25 years of validity, which will be 15 years in the case of sale of the property to another occupant or if you execute extension or rehabilitation of the house is to be carried out. Once the certificate has expired, the owner of the house must initiate a new procedure to receive the concession of

Gmail: Would you fall into the trap of this clever phishing attack? A new scam that targets Google users through a fake attachment that leads you to a fake login page is the latest in a line of effective phishing attacks. It's a Classic scam, but devilishly effective. This new dangerous phishing campaign is trapping users of Gmail mail. Even individuals with technical skills fall for it, as emphasized by the security researcher Mark Maunder of WordFence. The scam relies on a biased URL that looks harmless, but is actually deadly. The attacker sends the victim an email that appears to be from someone he knows and displays an attachment pointing to a document hosted on Google Drive. In reality, it is not an attachment, but an image embedded in the body of the email. If you click on it, a login page opens automatically, prompting you to fill in his username and password. This is not necessarily very surprising What is phishing? Phishing is a type of cyber attack under which emails and messages are sent from fictitious companies or people, telling users they have won a lottery or contest and requesting them to make some particular personal information public in order to physically receive the prize. Often these include bank account details or even sums of money.

What is the new Gmail phishing attack? The hacker behind the new phishing attacks waits for users to submit their passwords. The second a new password is entered, the hacker logs in as the user. The hacker can do this by using the new technique of phishing which employs a data uniform resource identifier (URI). What it effectively does is create a fake Google log-in page to fool users into entering their account credentials. It does so by embedding a complete file in the browser's location bar. According to a report in Forbes, the hacker must be part of a team since they are very quick to act. If not a team, then there must be an automated system employed by the hacker. Why is it more dangerous than regular phishing? The attack has targeted Gmail accounts specifically. Going by the level of interconnectivity a Gmail account has with almost all other accounts (social media/websites/saved payment details), it is

Shaping Up for 2017: Part 2 By Heidi Wardman. There has never been a better time to make important lifestyle changes and work towards a happier, healthier you, than here and now. Most Fitness and Lifestyle Consultants will tell you that you cannot make permanent lifestyle changes by focusing on your diet alone. Instead, a healthy well balanced diet should be teamed with a varied, regular programme of exercise, which will not only help to burn calories but also tone up the fatty areas which you are left with once the excess weight has gone. This should be continued even when you are at a weight that you are happy with, in order to keep your heart, other muscles and joints in good working condition. It can be diﬃcult to ind the time and energy at irst, especially if you work full time and have additional responsibilities, such as a family to look after in the evenings. However, once you have established your new routine you will see everything else slip nicely into place around it. Here are a few simple ways to help you develop a sustainable itness programme and get your life in order. Make Simple Changes Getting in shape does not necessarily mean that you have to become a 6am gym bunny or drag yourself out for a ive mile run every evening. In fact, it is important not to set the bar too high, as in doing this you may be inadvertently setting yourself up for failure! By tweaking your normal itness routine and eating habits you are more likely to design a regime which you can stick to and in this sense will reach your goals more quickly. For example, undertaking short intense bouts of lifting and cardiovascular exercise combined with swimming, jogging or cycling, will give you better results than doing just one of these activities for a longer period. It Occurred To Me This Week By Neil Sambrook Appreciation There is an old saying you should never meet your idols, the inference being they are bound to be a disappointment. Unlikely to come across Bob Dylan on the Costa Blanca anytime soon, I was reminded by the current ITV Drama Tina and Bobby that long ago I once came into the orbit of a hero – Bobby Moore. I cannot claim to have known him, even remotely – many who were close friends often said he was charming but distant at the same time – but toward the end of his life when he worked as a radio broadcaster our paths occasionally crossed in the press box. I would go as far to say the highlight of my sports writing career was not a Champions League Final or World Cup fixture, but receiving a nod of recognition from Bobby Moore – three days after sitting near each other at Wembley, we met again in the Villa Park Press Room, he giving me a ‘we’ll have to stop meeting like this,’ type grin. I cannot remember who Aston Villa played that Saturday, but will never forget an upclose Bobby Moore smile, that from July 30 1966 became engrained in the national consciousness. Space does not allow to fully extol Bobby Moore the footballer. Easily the finest British defender of all-time and since he retired from the international stage, very few have come close to reaching his level of accomplishment. But Bobby Moore was suitably gifted to be world class in any era he would have played. Until England once again unearth a defender with the same poise and ability to counteract danger in a second, their delusions of grandeur will remain exactly that. As for Bobby Moore the man, who knows? Will the Tina and Bobby television drama tell us anything new? Biographers have found it hard to depict a man who could emotionally evasive even to those who knew him well. Clearly he was complex and flawed, as we all can be, but despite foibles seems someone remarkably short on ego for one who achieved so much. His acclaim as a player and England captain is richly deserved – what he did not deserve was the appalling treatment he received from The Football Association when his playing career ended. Neither was it fair for him to be taken at the relatively young age of 51. In the week he died in February 1993, I asked John Bond, then manager of Shrewsbury Town,

John thought for a moment, then looked across his desk and said: ‘They are no more from where Bobby came from.’ Taylor Of Distinction It would be remiss of me not to pay tribute to former England manager Graham Taylor who died at the age of 72 this week. I had the privilege of speaking to Graham many times when he was manager of Aston Villa, England and Wolverhampton Wanderers and always found him a courteous, engaging man.

Indeed, making an appointment to see him was never difficult, it was ending the conversation such was his willingness to discuss football. Despite a disappointing spell as England boss, when he was subjected to the very worst in tabloid journalism – which he rose above with typical dignity – Taylor was a fine club manager, with his achievements at Watford nothing short of miraculous. Latterly our paths crossed when he worked as a broadcaster and we always parted on good terms with a handshake. I will remember him with nothing but fondness and affection.

Valtteri Bottas joins Lewis Hamilton By Nigel Owen. To borrow the word used by Niki Lauda, the "commotion" surrounding Mercedes' attempts to replace Nico Rosberg at short notice has now come to an end, with Valtteri Bottas getting the nod to slot in alongside Lewis Hamilton. Is he the right man for the job? Don't be fooled by Williams's dip in form over the last three years, Bottas has long looked like a driver deserving of a top car and now he gets a chance to prove himself. The domino eﬀect of that move means Felipe Massa returns after missing exactly zero races during his retirement from F1, while Pascal Wehrlein eﬀectively rejected by Mercedes and then Williams ends up at Sauber. With all of that resolved, 2017's launch season can't come soon enough. Valterri Bottas thinks he will be able to match Lewis Hamilton as the two will be paired as team mates for next season.

Bottas signed a deal with the Silver Arrows on the 16th January, confirming all the speculating about for weeks. The length of Bottas's contract was not disclosed, with Mercedes simply announcing him for 2017. The Finn is confident that he can get close to Hamilton in 2017. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is no longer part of Valtteri Bottas' personal management after the Finnish driver signed the deal to race for the team. Wolff invested in Bottas' career at an early stage, but said before the signing announcement meant he would no longer be involved in the Finn's personal affairs. The bargeboard can start much further forward than previously, less than half a metre from the front wheel centre line, and cannot exceed 475mm in height. It can then extend all the way back towards the sidepod, avoiding a small exclusion zone in roughly the same region as this year, ending on the loor’s ‘axe head’. Capturing and managing airlow coming around the nose and lower front wishbone will be made much easier by these changes.

Ireland and Lions legend Paul O'Connell joins the BBC Six Nations team Yesterday, Friday, the BBC has released details of its coverage plans for the 2017 RBS 6 Nations Championship across its TV, Radio and Digital outlets. Former Ireland and Lions captain Paul O’Connell joins BBC team who will broadcast seven live games and four Rugby Special Highlights on BBC TV. New for 2017, weekly Women’s Six Nations TV Highlights show while Radio 5 live and 5 live sports extra to have comprehensive coverage of all games. The BBC’s TV line-up includes experienced presenters John Inverdale and Gabby Logan, with expert analysis and input from some of the most well-known names in the sport’s history, including Jeremy Guscott, Jonathan Davies, Martyn Williams, Keith Wood, Brian Moore, Chris Paterson, Andy Nicol, Mike Blair, Thomas Castaignede and Ali Williams.
