Cinema Tourism Comes to Cuenca

Cinema Tourism (Set-Jetting) is a reality, and you only have to do the Math to realise that.

Following the release of Out of Africa, the number of visitors to Kenya increased by 500%, while visitors to the Wallace Monument rose by 300% following the release of Braveheart. The Crown Hotel, Amersham, had to put up the ‘No Vacancies’ sign for three years following the hot, steamy scenes between Hugh Grant and Andy McDowell filmed there during Four Weddings and a Funeral. And the list goes on.

Spain has been slow to follow the trend, which is surprising considering that it is the non-English speaking country with most English language films ever shot; over 700 and still counting. From Valencia I have been trying to do something about that for years, encouraging Town Halls and provincial governments to develop this rewarding form of tourism. My book ‘Movies Made in Spain’ identifies the locations of 720 films and mini-series filmed partly or wholly in Spain and shot in English.

There isn’t a country in the world (and one or two planets) that haven’t been represented by Spanish scenery.

But it’s been an uphill task; the authorities in Valencia, for example, have done nothing to take advantage of the filming of Tomorrowland with George Clooney and Hugh Laurie at the City of Arts and Sciences; the authorities at Trebuena, Cádiz tore down the Japanese POW camp built there by Steven Spielberg for Empire of the Sun, and with a few glorious exceptions, the making of all these films is not being harnessed by tourism entities in order to attract new visitors.

Putting my money where my mouth is, a colleague, Jaume Palau, a Catalan expert in tourism, who is the author of books about the locations of James Bond films (many of them in Spain) and Game of Thrones, and I are organising an event in Cuenca in an attempt to encourage a private-public cinema weekend (or week), visiting

the main locations in that province, which has witnessed filming by Richard Lester, Sergio Leone, Stanley Kramer, Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, “Brosnan, Pierce Brosnan,” Charlton Heston, Benicio del Toro, Tim Robbins, Robert de Niro, Oliver Reed, Michael York and Geraldine Chaplin, to name but a few.

Cuenca is an enchanting province, but not one that is saturated by tourists, and apart from the spectacular old town, perched on a hill, it has three major international filming locations; the castle of Belmonte, the monastery of Uclés and the bizarre, geological rock formations of La Ciudad Encantada and Los Callejones de Las Majadas. Local politicians, tourist organisations, film producers, tour operators, hotel and restaurant owners and other potential merchandising manufacturers have started signing up for the event, to be held on February 4th 2017 at the Parador Nacional de Cuenca (where Pierce Brosnan stayed while filming The World is not Enough). It will be a round table meeting, with presentations from experts in cinema history, tourism, local monuments and products, from which it is hoped to go beyond talking and produce a pilot tour to tap into the unexploited market for cinema tourism.

If the project is a success, we hope that the idea will spread to other provinces, especially to places where few tourists have gone before, but where the stars have been seen, such as Atienza in Guadalajara, where Katherine Hepburn and Vanessa Redgrave made The Trojan Women, or Artajona, Navarra, where Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn shot Robin and Marian. The resulting tour, a unique experience combining films, locations, local gastronomy and products and varied forms of entertainment, could take place in Spanish or in English (or both) depending on the demand. It will probably happen in spring 2017.

For James Bond fans out there, locations used in Spain for The World Is Not Enough included the dramatic, action-packed opening scenes of the pre-title sequence take place in the penthouse office of a Swiss bank situated on the banks of the Nervion River in Bilbao, overlooking the new Guggenheim Art Gallery. The Bardenas Reales, near Tudela, was the setting for sequences above the underground nuclear test facility, supposedly in Kazakhstan, and the vast construction site and pipeline in the shadow of the Caucasus Mountains were filmed in Los Callejones, Las Majadas, near Cuenca.

Los Pistoleros Country Music Fest The first Los Pistoleros Country Music Festival takes place today, Saturday 22nd October at the Restaruant Rincon de Luna. This is about a ten minute drive from Guardamar, on the CV920 between Guardamar and Rojales.

The Day starts at 11.00am and features Charles Cole, Cherry K, Red Strokes, Johnny Scott, BB Anderson and G Thomas. The Los Pistoleros will be there in force so I am sure there will be some interesting developments over the day.

The organisers are asking people not to bring food and drink into the venue as this will be on sale all day.

Panto Season Around The Corner Stagestruck Theatre Group are looking forward to presenting their Christmas Pantomime, 'Aladdin' on the 17th, 18th and 19th November at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio.

This well known story features Aladdin (Blanca Helena Sierra), the son of the poor Widow Twankey (Ian Smith) and his lazy brother Wishee Washee (Chrissie Wright). Aladdin is tricked out of his magic lamp and his Genie by his wicked Uncle Abanazar (Alan Appleton) but he manages to

recover them ensuring a happy ending at the wedding of Aladdin and the Princess Jasmine (Louise Thomas).

Stagestruck has become known for comedy and this script is no exception. As well as comedy, the audience will be treated to song and dance, so there really is something for everyone. In addition to a great night out, the proceeds from ticket sales are donated to local charities including the Alzheimer's Association. The Bull Run The intrepid father – son team of Dave and Mitch Bull completed another epic journey on Thursday, having spent almost a month on their motorcycles, riding around Spain.

Leaving on September 27rd, 6000 plus kilometres later, they returned relatively unscathed along with their sidekick,

Jarred the Bear, raising awareness along the way for Starbright Angles, the AECC and Samaritans In Spain, of which Dave is Patron. More about their intrepid trip in next week's CoastRider and respect from all of here on their successful trip.

Virgin Voyages ready to set sail

by Keith Nicol “It was a big moment for the Virgin brand in Miami this week, and I almost missed it. As the CEO of our cruise line was up onstage in the beautiful Faena Hotel theatre, I was nowhere to be seen. Stalling for time, Tom McAlpin invited some wonderful performers to dance upon some red deck chairs. It was then that I made my entrance to the stage – carrying towels and serving drinks.” So said the one and only Richard Branson about his latest venture: Virgin Voyages.

On Tuesday Virgin Cruises announced that they are rebranding as Virgin Voyages, promising “to change cruising for good.” With Tuesday's announcement came a certain feeling of personal, self satisfaction as in 2002 I was involved with a consortium who presented a business plan to Sir Richard for a brand new cruise project: an entertainment based cruise line: Millennium Cruises. At that time Virgin had various agreements in place with Carnival Cruise Line and to form their own cruise line would have been a major conflict of interest, but now almost a decade and a half later, it's going to be a reality.

“The name cruise is pretty awful so I don’t like that. I don’t know why people call their companies cruise companies,” Virgin Group founder and billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson told guests at the Faena Hotel Miami Beach, the venue for the company’s press event. “The only reason we ever go into a new industry is if we feel it’s lacking in something and I think the cruise industry, there is a lot of people who just would never go on a cruise ship,” Branson told the Miami Herald in an interview Tuesday. “We basically decided, ‘Let’s have a blank sheet of paper, let’s create the kind of voyage company that we would like to go on,’ and that’s what we’ve done.”

“A lot of the things I’ve heard is you get onto cruise ships and you’ve got these massive rooms, big buffets and you feel a little bit like you’re cattle or sheep being herded on and herded off,” Branson said. “We think we can create something that is really fun.” In a promo video for the new line, Virgin Voyages promises a “holiday you can’t predict” that will “celebrate your curiosity, not force you to follow one itinerary.”

Travellers, Cruisers, Voyagers, call them what you may, will have their chance to experience it all for themselves with the first voyages penned into happen in 2020, sailing from Miami.

Schedules for subsequent ships, set to launch in 2021 and 2022, have not yet been announced. On Tuesday, Tom McAlpin, President and CEO of Virgin Voyages added that Virgin Voyages had officially signed a “multibillion dollar” ship building contract with Italian shipyard Fincantieri for the three 110,000ton, 2,700passenger ships.

One ship feature that is confirmed: a new clean energy system in partnership with Swedish company Climeon Ocean. “We don’t see ourselves as a big player in the industry,” McAlpin told the Miami Herald. “We see ourselves as a small boutique line that will offer different experiences.”

An enthusiastic and boyant Sir Richard said: “After our performance, it was time for a big announcement: our new name. I have never been on a cruise, and never wanted to - they sound stuffy and dull. But I would love to go on a Voyage – they sound adventurous, exciting and glamourous. So I am thrilled to introduce our newest company: Virgin Voyages.

We have officially signed a ship building contract for three vessels with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, and can’t wait to set sail.

While we have lots of work ahead to build our three ships, we’re already excited to welcome you aboard the ship of things to come.

We outlined our ship building schedule,

including steel cutting in early 2017, followed by the keel laying in Genoa in the fourth quarter of 2017. Virgin Voyages’ first ship will arrive at PortMiami in 2020, hosting more than 2,700 sailors and 1,150 spirited crew members.

Whatever industry we enter, we commit to changing for good – and cruising is no exception.

Virgin Voyages will be the first cruise line to adopt the clean energy system, Climeon Ocean, which will transform low-grade energy into clean electricity, on all three of our ships. The resulting environmental impact will be an estimated 5,400 tons of carbon dioxide savings annually per ship an amount that would take 180,000 trees 30 years to absorb.

There is so much more to share, and I can’t wait to reveal our designs, our itineraries and the unique experiences that will make Virgin Voyages unforgettable. The harbour is deep enough to dock a ship inside the harbour area but whether or not local and national politicians can get their act together and work with investors, will depend upon if the City of Salt is even up for consideration. Spanish hoteliers fight back against rise in false holiday sickness claims Spanish hoteliers are taking action to fight a sharp rise in fraudulent holiday sickness claims from British holidaymakers. Hoteliers from Benidorm, the Costa Blanca and Valencia say they have decided to take a stand against a growing compensation culture in the UK which, they claim, has prompted a huge increase in claims this summer. They claim the majority of cases are fraudulent and are not backed up with evidence.

They are putting the blame on the growing number of specialist claims management companies which are increasingly targeting Brits abroad. These companies are using aggressive sales tactics, including cold calling, recruiting resort-based salespeople, and even dressing up as

tour operators at hotels to reel in customers, hoteliers claim. The problem, they say, is costing the Spanish hotel industry over €60 million a year.

"We feel the British complaints procedure, which allows claims to be processed when there is no evidence of truth, creates a grossly unfair and disproportionate system," said Nuria Montes, general secretary from HOSBEC which represents the resorts' hoteliers. "It unreasonably inflates the cost for the hotelier by adding fat profits for lawyer firms who bill for 90% of the total amount of the claim, while only 10% of the amount is allocated to offsetting the alleged damages to the tourist. This system is completely contrary to the Spanish one, whereby the claimant must prove the accuracy of what they are claiming."

She said the problems are unique to the UK market, with guests from other popular inbound countries such as Belgium, Holland and Portugal, and even the British direct sale market, having no grounds for complaint. She said the problem is only for bookings made via tour operator partners under the EU Travel Package Directive 2015. "This is yet another example of how the legal and regulated accommodation sector is the

victim of such practices, whereas online booking platforms are operating 'soundly' without being subject to any similar mass complaint campaigns," she said.

Spanish hoteliers are urging ABTA and major UK tour operators to lobby the Government to radically overhaul the claims system, but in the meantime they are introducing short term measures. Hotels will be using traceability systems for guests so they can continuously track their meals and drinks consumption and use of dining areas and restaurants. "These systems will allow hotels to check whether consumption patterns are compatible with the causes alleged in the complaint form, which mostly have to do with gastrointestinal illnesses," it said. They will also ensure guests are told that fraudulent claims are illegal and could result in a prison sentence.

ABTA said its members have reported a significant rise in the number of gastric illness claims being made by holidaymakers. It also blamed the aggressive sales practices of some claims management companies. Elvis Gospel Tribute There is a very special Elvis Gospel Tribute happening tomorrow night, Sunday 23rd October, at Zenia Boulevard. The King will be on stage with his backing singers from 6:00pm for this free performance for anyone visiting the Commercial Centre on Sunday. Close your eyes and enjoy the songs of Elvis performed by Pastor Roy Davies from the Torrevieja Christian Fellowship who although will not be dressing up in an Elvis Jumpsuit and wig, certainly sound the part. The programme lasts about one and a half hours; with a 10 minute break in the middle.

The programme is entirely Gospel, although many of the songs are well-known 'main-stream' songs, such as: Crying in the Chapel, An American Trilogy, I Believe, Put your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho, Amazing Grace, You'll never walk alone and the title song from Elvis's new album that's due out in December: The Wonder of You. In his early years, Elvis was brought up in the local

Assemblies of God Church; where he says that he found his initial musical inspiration. He received guitar lessons from two of his uncles plus the pastor of the Church in Tupelo, where he was born and brought up. When he was 13 years old, the family moved to Memphis.

Elvis recorded more than 50 Gospel songs during his career, of which Roy will be performing about 50. Although Elvis was nominated for 14 Grammy awards, surprisingly none of the three that he actually won; were for Rock and Roll; they were for Gospel songs. In 1967 he won his first Grammy in the category: Best Sacred Performance – with ‘How Great Thou Art’. In 1972 he won in the category: Best Inspirational Performance – with ‘He Touched Me’. In 1974 he won his last Grammy in the same category: Best Inspirational Performance – with the same song as the first time: ‘How Great Thou Art’ – from the album ‘Live on Stage at Memphis.’ 'How great Thou art' and 'He touched me' will be part of the programme on Sunday.

Elvis might have been

known as ‘The King of Rock and Roll’; although Elvis himself used that title in describing Fats Domino.

When asked at one time about how he felt to be known as ‘the king’; he replied: “There is only one King – his name is Jesus.” Dave Marsh, editor of the of ‘New Rolling Stone Album Guide’, said that Elvis was: “arguably the greatest white gospel singer of his time [and] really the last rock & roll artist to make gospel as vital a component of his musical personality as his secular songs.” Sadly, Elvis Presley died at the age of 42, on August 16th in Memphis.

Song Facts: Good Vibrations Let's take you back half a century this day, October 22nd 1966, and an all time classic: Good Vibrations: On this day back in 1966, The Beach Boys ‘Good Vibrations’ made its debut on the US singles chart. Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, the track was recorded over a period of six weeks in four different Los Angeles studios, at a cost of over $16,000. The recording engineer would later say that the last take sounded exactly like the first, six months earlier. The record would reach No.1 on the US charts in December 1966.

Brian Wilson told Rolling Stone magazine: "My mother used to tell me about vibrations. I didn't really understand too much of what she meant when I was a boy. It scared me, the word 'vibrations' - to think that invisible feelings existed. She also told me about dogs that would bark at some people, but wouldn't bark at others, and so it came to pass that we talked about good vibrations."

Brian Wilson called this song a "Pocket Symphony," and experimented with it over the course of 17 recording sessions. At the time, it was the most expensive pop song ever recorded, costing about $50,000 to make.

Brian Wilson worked on this obsessively. At the time, he stayed home and wrote music while the rest of the band toured. Wilson was just starting a very bizarre phase of his life where he would spend long periods in bed and work in a sandbox. During this period, many considered him a genius because of the groundbreaking songs and recording techniques he came up with.

This was recorded over a two-month period using top Los Angeles session musicians - the Beach Boys didn't play any instruments on the track. About 90 hours of studio time and 70 hours of tape were used, and at least 12 musicians played on the sessions. It's hard to know whose performances ended up on the record, but some of the musicians involved were Glen Campbell (lead guitar), Hal Blaine (drums), Larry Knechtel (organ) and Al de Lory (piano).

Brian Wilson played bass when the Beach Boys went on the road, but he brought in Carol Kaye to play bass guitar and Lyle Ritz to play upright bass on these sessions. Kaye recalls, "He did the very first take on that with Ray Pohlman at Goldstar and scrapped that. And the other 12 dates I'm playing

on - that's 36 hours - he did not change that bass part all during that time. He changed all the rest of the music, he didn't change the bass part. This is what he wrote. It was both bass players at that point - I'm playing the upper part and Lyle's playing the lower part. If you listen to jazz, that's the feel that he wrote."

found an inventor named Paul Tanner who'd been a trombonist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra between 1938-42. Tanner had developed a similar device with Bob Whitsell called an electrotheremin, which unlike a regular theremin, had no antennas. Tanner was brought in to play the device on the recording.

Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love wrote the lyrics for this song, which said were "basically a flowery poem." For the time, the music of 'Good Vibrations,' was so unique and psychedelic in itself. Just the instrumental part of it alone was such a departure from what we have done, like 'Surfin' USA' and 'California Girls' and 'I Get Around' and 'Fun, Fun, Fun,' all of which I had a hand in writing. I wanted to do something that captured this feeling of the track and the times, but also could relate to people. Because I thought that the music was such a departure that who knows how well it would relate to Beach Boys fans at that time.

According to Wilson, Capitol Records didn't want to release this as a single because they thought it was too long at 3:35. He pleaded with them to put it out, and felt vindicated when it shot to the top of the charts.

The unusual, high-pitched sound in this song was produced using an electro-theremin, which produces a similar sound to a traditional theremin, an instrument that uses electric current to produce sound (you don't touch a theremin to play it, but move your hand across the electric field). The theremin was invented in 1919, but was very hard to play, and ended up being used mostly as a sound effects device. Brian Wilson was familiar with the instrument, as it was used to create eerie sounds in low budget horror movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still and It Came from Outer Space. When he put cellos on "Good Vibrations," he envisioned an unusual high frequency sound to go along with them, and he thought of the instrument. Wilson couldn't track down a real theremin, but

This was the beginning of what was going to be an album called Smile. Wilson recorded the album in about 50 sessions, but it was never released.

Considered a "lost album," Wilson finally finished it in 2004. When he played the album on tour that year, "Good Vibrations" got a rousing response.

This was the last US #1 hit for The Beach Boys until "Kokomo" went to #1 22 years later, setting the record for longest gap between #1 hits on the Hot 100. This record was broken by Cher when "Believe" hit #1 in 1999, 25 years after her previous chart-topper, Brian Wilson was the only songwriter credited on this track until a 1994 lawsuit awarded Mike Love composer credit for his contributions to the lyrics on this and 34 other Beach Boys songs. Love maintains that Murry Wilson (Brian's father), handled the publishing details and screwed him out of the songwriting credits.

Costa Castaway Stan Dibble Retiring in 2001, Los Montesinos resident Stan Dibble moved to Spain in early 2002. He set up home in El Galan for six years and to pass the time, took up golf. After moving to Los Montesinos, he started playing 'petanca', which Stan says: “became a large part of my life.

Playing a main part in forming the Pirates, and originally playing at El Rancho.” Stan then helped in the forming of La Salinas Petanca League which was one of his main interests, working alongside Roger Seymour as one of the founders.

Stan added: “The league logo was designed by myself and I think is still used today. In moving to Montesinos and being President of the Las Salinas Petanca league at the time and needing to create another division I club, I formed El Presidente, while at the same time playing at San Luis with the Swedish club and enjoyed over six years playing there, while finally playing in a team in the Swedish Serie in the 2nd division.

However, playing petanca five or six times a week took its toll on his shoulder and he decided to give it up, taking up biking and supporting local football club, CD Los Montesinos. He enjoyed the social life of supporting the team and so became a member of the Full Monte, then Membership Secretary and finally Vice president of the Full Monte Supporters Club. This then led to Stan helping to form the Monte Mentals Walking Football team, of which he still oversees the

organisation of, occasionally playing himself and being a very active referee.

Stan continued: “I still play the odd game of golf with a group of Monte Mentals and enjoy skiing though I think next year when I reach the grand old age of 80, I will have to knock that one on the head.

When it comes to music, Stan has somewhat eclectic tastes and enjoys the odd bogie. Said Stan: I have always loved good and varied music, being addicted to modern jazz in my teens, visiting all the London clubs and seeing many famous acts in concert for the first time. Back then American artists and bands were banned from performing in the UK by the unions but I'd listen to Stan Kenton, Lionel Hampden, MJQ , Lous Armstrong and Gerry Mulligan who I really 'digged' at the time.

SD: One of my first records was “Lullaby of the Leaves” by Gerry Mulligan, taking me back to the year 1952. Staying wth Jazz, Over Dinner, I like to relax with the sounds of Modern Jazz Quartet.

By his own admission, Stan is more than happy to get from A to B safely and without incident and so his days of pedal to the metal are long behind him. Instead he likes Big Band music such as Duke Ellington's “ Take the A train” or Stan Kenton “Peanuts”.

SD: “My Guilty Pleasure; Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden; got to love the head banging and superb rifts of Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath record” Paranoid”: like me.” Stan might not have been too enamoured by the Glam Rock era of the seventies but as a twenty something he still had that rebellious side with one of his favourites being Satisfaction by the Stones.

SD: My favourite Female Artist, is a hard one but I enjoy Annie Lennox “Sweet Dreams”, Juice Newton “Angel of the Morning” and I like a few others such as Faith Hill and Linda Rondstat.

Male Artist, David Bowiem who sadly passed away last year and his “Lets Dance” and “ China Girl”. Apart from the jazz, my favourite Band would be Santana; “Oye como Va”; a superb guitarist who I met in a hotel in Frankfurt back in the late 70’s.

SD: Finally Wild Track; Love the track “Go your own way” by the great Fleetwood Mac. Music has always been a part of my life and I have “varied” tastes as you can see by my choices, though there are many other styles and bands I love to hear.

Back Stage with ANDY WINWOOD Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Andy Winwood and I’m a solo guitar/vocal entertainer, also half of ‘That’s Life!’ duo with my partner Heather. She and I are also members of ‘Time Team’ Band.

How did you start in the business?

I started playing in folk clubs in the ’80s and soon found out that if you could sing in tune, play 3 chords on the guitar and had a drum machine you could go out and earn up to 30 quid a night! I thought: “Hey I can do that!”…. so I did.

What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer?

I’m a qualified driving instructor so would probably still be doing that.

As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence?

There’s been so many but, musically above all, I would say James Taylor.

Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright?

In a word: Yes. What was your best moment?

Apart from meeting Heather when I was gigging on a ship (diplomacy alert!!!), it was probably in 1997 when I was facing redundancy and had decided to turn pro. I had sent tapes (it was the ‘90s!), photos and CVs to just about everyone with virtually zero response. One morning the phone rang and it was a top entertainment agent asking if I would be interested in working with him. Not surprisingly I was. We worked together for many years. He’s retired now but I’ll always be grateful he took a chance on me when nobody else wanted to know.

What has been your worst moment?

Hmm there’s been a few of those but I’ll go for 1994 when I was in a trio supporting Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen in front of several hundred people. I was desperate to make a good impression but the lead guitarist was so loud I couldn’t hear myself sing. Now any singer knows that if you can’t hear yourself it’s very hard to stay in tune. During the interval the agent took the other two aside and said that I was not to sing in the second spot as I couldn’t sing in tune and furthermore he would never work with the two of them again unless they got rid of me. Not the greatest confidence-booster in the world. Took me

months to get it back again.

What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business?

I have received much good advice over the years.

The best I can give is that talent alone is just not enough. You will only get to any sort of reasonable level by sheer hard work and persistence (and a thick skin). I would say for most of us it’s10% talent,90% hard work. Even for people at the very top of the tree it’s probably20-80.

Any little anecdotes or interesting stories?

I was working on a ship and a very wellknown and popular duo were appearing (not going to name them). 5 minutes before they were due on stage the assistant cruise director found them still in their cabin pi**ed out of their skulls. One of them had to be physically helped onto the stage. We were all amazed because their performance was vocally and instrumentally absolutely note-perfect! Not even a hint of slurring when they talked between songs. When they’d finished they went back to their cabin and carried on boozing.They were true pros and real gents as well.

Whats On – Costa Blanca caught up with Philip & Julie at Bar Carmens Tell us about yourselves My name is Julie and my partner is Philip. Together we run Carmen’s Bar and Restaurant. I have been in the catering trade all of my adult life and Phil is a qualified chef. I previously ran another bar in Spain for6 years and met Phil when he came to work for me there.

What made you open a bar?

My brother and I wanted to own our own bar/restaurant and so we bought Carmen’s. Unfortunately my brother became homesick for the UK very quickly and left. Phil meanwhile was running a golf shop but struggling owing to having to compete with online sales so when the summons came he was happy to come and join me at Carmen’s. That

was 3 years ago and since then we’ve never looked back.

Where did the inspiration for the name come from?

When we took over the bar it had a different name but it had been called Carmen’s Bar and Restaurant previously. We completely revamped and refurbished it and decided to revert to the original name.

Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style?

We share the cooking and specialise in good old traditional English fayre. We pride

ourselves in doing what people enjoy and doing it well. All our dishes are home-made using fresh ingredients. During the winter months we do a carvery on Wednesdays and Sundays. We also do outside catering.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu?

For me it has to be what I call the “proper” butcher’s sausages. They really taste exceptional and I love ‘em! Phil would go for our homemade pies….and I have to categorically state that there is absolutely no truth in the rumour that he ends up eating most of them!!!

Favourite day of the week?

We have regular live entertainment and karaoke so there’s always something different for us to enjoy. Also we are passionate about doing events to help local charities so we like to do something for these on a regular basis. However my personal favourite day has to be a Thursday as that is the day I host our ‘Card Bingo.’

Once I have a microphone in my hand I tend to say what I think…ooer…I’ve got into trouble a couple of times… but people always come back for

more so I can’t be that bad!!!

Any interesting tales?

There was one bizarre event. We had a French gentleman and his wife who racked up quite a ‘tab’ one afternoon. When it was time to settle up he announced that he had no money and would have to go to a cashpoint. We suggested his wife stayed with us while he went to one but he refused to leave his wife as a deposit so left us his passport, wallet and car keys and off they went. We never saw them again! Their car disappeared shortly afterwards, so they must have had spare keys, but no sign of them. We handed in their property to the police but that was the last we ever heard. Spain's All Work And No Play It may be stating the obvious but in Spain: Teachers are taught to Teach.

Not to think, not to improvise, not to be innovative for the most part: but to teach. At the end of a set period of time, a class will usually reach a given page in a given book, as set forth by the authorities, be it that the students have actually grasped what they are meant to be learning or not. However in order to reach and achieve these targets, the amount of homework required by pupils is taking away their quality of life and what we would just think of as 'playtime'.

A new report in the Spanish daily newspaper El Pais asks: “Why are Spanish infants doing 10 hours of homework a week?” And the giving of homework starts early with some schools sending five-year-olds home with more and more tasks: now, parents are protesting.

El Pais says: “Alberto takes his homework everywhere. The five-year-old even takes it to his grandmother’s house at the weekend for the family lunch in a bid to complete it over the weekend. His mother, Reyes, is worried, saying the school “really pushes” the children.

Alberto is in the last year of infant school and he spends an hour-and-a-half every afternoon filling out cards with the alphabet in capital letters. His school, a state-run centre in Seville, is not unusual, according to his mother who tried to move him to another, only to find that the alternatives were no better. Neither did she find solace in other parents’ views.

“They didn’t think it was a bad thing,” says Reyes. “They get their children used to the idea of competition from an early age.”

This divide between those who want their children to have homework and those who would prefer it to be given at a later stage is part of the debate currently raging in Spain that has led the stateschool parents’ confederation (CEAPA) to call for a homework boycott in November.

It’s more than a year since the debate over the benefits of homework kicked off in Spain. In 2015, mother of three Eva Bailén began to collect signatures for a petition demanding a reduction in homework after watching her middle child lose out on the chance to play throughout his childhood. Her campaign is ongoing and has triggered attempts throughout the country to regulate homework. Almost simultaneously, the CEAPA, comprised of 12,000 parents’ associations, began to demand that homework disappear altogether from their children’s lives.

To be given homework before starting primary school, as in the case of Alberto and Almudena, is not the norm in Spain.

But complaints have alerted CEAPA to the fact that some infant schools are pushing

“We need sensible homework that takes into account the individual, because not all children learn at the same rate,” says Caballero. “The problem is that many families feel snowed under by homework. The parents end up doing it and the children have no time to do anything else.”

their pupils to master reading and writing as early as possible, instead of respecting their natural way of learning through play, says CEAPA president José Luis Pazos. Data from a survey of 1,748 families shows that 6.84% of infant school parents estimate their children have an hour of homework a day.

According to a 2012 study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Spanish 15year-olds have more homework than their peers, with 6.5 hours a week compared to an average of 4.9, with state schools pushing up the Spanish median.

At the start of this school year, the issue broke onto the political agenda when acting education minister, Iñigo Méndez de Vigo, recognized that there was need for “reflection”, with the regional governments of Madrid, the Canary Islands and Murcia all approving recommendations to reduce homework time.

Now CEAPA plans a homework boycott. If teachers insist on setting homework during the boycott, children should refuse to do it, says the organization, and instead take an explanatory note to school, as in any other strike situation.

One mother, Diana, is already employing the note strategy with her eight-year-old daughter’s English teacher. “I sent a note saying that my daughter had been unable to finish her homework due to family issues and that I would appreciate it if it were not considered a problem,” she says. The eight-year-old, who attends a government-subsidized school in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, is the oldest of three.

She is in school from 8.40am until 2.10pm, then she has lunch and does homework from 4pm until 6.30pm. “They are meant to give them the chance to work during school hours, but there’s no time,” says Diana. “When she finishes she still hasn’t begun her extra curricular activities so her day is even worse than an adult’s. When is she going to play?”

Every afternoon Diana talks about the homework to other mothers who all

agree their children are being pushed too hard. Diana’s daughter was punished for not finishing her English homework. If they punish her again, she says she will ask for a meeting with the child’s teachers. “These punishments are antiquated,” says Pedro José Caballero, President of the Parents’ Confederation for Government-subsidized Schools,CONCAPA, an umbrella organization for 2,000 schools and almost three million families. “They aren’t going to learn more like that.”

CONCAPA does not believe in giving homework during infancy but it does believe in homework for primary pupils.

Overall, the giving of additional homework does not seem to be working.

Valencia and Murcian schools have some of the worst percentages of pupils who have to repeat their school year, at least once; possibly having to resit two or three years. At least one new school in Torrevieja has been suffering from almost a 30% failure rate, meaning that instead of their being four first year classes, so many students failed the first year, that they had to form five classes for the next year.

And it seems that this pattern is being repeated year after year, as more and more schoolchildren continue to fail their year. Whether that's the fault of the parents, the teachers, the system or that Spain may be just bringing up a generation of underperforming students, is yet to be confirmed. And these 30% failure rates are not for schools full of International students, who may struggle with the Spanish Language, but from all over the province.

Why You Need A Spanish Will

by Fuensanta Alenda Andreu The European Union forced Spain to make changes to their laws, when it comes to writing out a Spanish Will and who will benefit after death. It is becoming usual (or more and more common) to file a petition before the Spanish courts on behalf of the children that were not included in the last will of their parents, British nationals and resident in Spain. Why? Last year came into force the European regulation No 650/2012, on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and enforcement in matter of succession and on the creation of a European Certificate of Succession. This ruling is to apply to a succession involving the death of a person on or after August 17th 2015. One of the main significant changes to the present legal situation is that to succession and wills the applicable law is that of the State of the habitual residence of the decease but rather the law of the State with which the deceased was manifestly more closely connected.

But what does that really mean? According to the Spanish Civil Code, the applicable law of who should benefit after death depended upon citizenship. Due to that, foreigners would typically grant their will according to their national law not observing the fixed rules established by the Spanish Civil Code. Now that the EURegNo 650/2012 has come into force, the applicable law will be that of the place of your habitual residence

must be given to your descendants, if you have them. One third of this can be freely deposited to the person or entity of your choice; you can leave it to whomever you wish. Most of the Common Wills granted by expats here in Spain, agree to leave what they own in Spain to their partner, whether they are married or not. This will be enforceable only if the testator included in their last will that the applicable law to the inheritance is their national law. The same law applies to the whole succession, irrespective of either the type of assets (moveable or immoveable) concerned or the country of their location. If not, Spanish law will be applied and his/her children might claim their rights. at the time of death, regardless of your original citizenship. However, the term habitual residence is not legally defined in this regulation, but this is a matter is something we shall cover in further articles.

The applicable law will govern, for example, the determination of the beneficiaries and their respective shares; the capacity to inherit; the powers of the heirs; the executors of the wills and the administrators of the estate and the liability for the debts under the succession. This has a special relevance, as the Spanish Civil Code is completely different, for example, than British applicable law.

However, before their death, a person can instead choose that the applicable law should be the law of their country of nationality or they can choose the law of where they live, but in either case, this election must be clearly included in their will. Here Comes ‘BERTIE’ The Beetle While Volkswagen Motorsport’s triumvirate of pace-setting Polo WRCs will be gunning for outright glory on this month’s Dayinsure Wales Rally GB (27-30 October), spare a thought for the fourth VW on the star-studded entry list.

Lining up alongside Sébastien Ogier and all the sport’s other top guns is plucky Bob Beales in his 58-year-old ‘Bertie’ Beetle!

Mind you the venerable orange Bug is no ordinary rally car – like many approaching pensionable age, it boasts quite a colourful history.

Bertie was born back in 1958 and early in his life was owned by a Hereford taxi company where he suffered a skirmish with a bus and somehow a more damaging roll. The repaired car was then rally-prepared by the legendary VW specialist Bill Bengry in the early sixties before being acquired by Beales a few years later. “I was a lucky boy to get my hands on the car and it’s been a dream ever since,” says Bob who competed extensively in rallies, autotests and even autocross before putting Bertie into storage. In more recent years, though, the Beetle has enjoyed a new lease of life competing in many historic events including the Monte Carlo Rally in 1990.

Marking the 25th anniversary of that adventure, Beales entered last year’s Network Q WRGB National Rally and – despite the best efforts of storm Abigail – won his class, a feat he’s now trying to emulate in 2016. “Competing in Wales Rally GB last year was a brilliant experience,” he enthuses. “It

was very hard on the old car and the weather made it all the tougher – there was lots of aquaplaning.

But that’s what makes it such a great event – it’s a monumental challenge.”

Beales admits he takes great interest in the successes of the VW factory team and is ultra impressed with their all-conquering Polo R WRCs. He says: “The technology in those cars is just brilliant, although I’m not sure if I’m man enough to give one a go. That said, I actually passed one of the Polos on last November’s event when Jari-Matti Latvala got stuck in a ditch – that would have made a great photo! “I reminded Jari-Matti about it when I saw him at Goodwood earlier this year, and he remembered seeing Bertie going past – it’s one of those cars you just can’t forget!”

Women Angrier Than Men Behind The Wheel quicker.”

New research from Hyundai Motor UK has discovered women drivers are angrier than men. The recent study of 1,000 UK drivers reveals women are, on average, 12% angrier than men when they’re behind the wheel.

Researchers found driving sparked ancient ‘defence’ instincts from when humans were hunter-gatherers. These evolutionary traits kicked in during the test when women were either undertaken, shouted or beeped at, had to deal with a back-seat driver (women 14% angrier) or were faced with a road user who failed to indicate (women 13% angrier). In all test scenarios, women were more likely to respond with anger than male drivers.

The experiment, conducted by Patrick Fagan, behavioural psychologist from Goldsmiths University London, ‘sense tested’ the 1,000 drivers to see how sound, sight, smell, touch and taste provoke emotional responses in different driving scenarios. The study found there are two dominant emotions: happiness - intrinsically linked to a sense of freedom when driving - and anger when drivers feel out of control. Other key findings include: The primary reasons for our continued love affair with driving are the freedom it gives us (51%), mobility (19%) and independence (10%) If you want a man to open up, take him for a drive. Just under a third (29%) of men said they find it easier to have a conversation in the car. Fourteen percent added that a chat actually makes them a better driver. 54% of Brits said the thing that made them really happy in the car was singing - which explains why Carpool Karaoke has resonated with so many people. When the researchers looked at what makes us happy behind the wheel, 84% of

Seat’s first electric vehicle will arrive in 2019, before the arrival of its yet to be confirmed large SUV and after next year’s launch of the Arona small SUV. Speaking at the launch of the facelifted Leon, product strategy and market research mexecutive Enrique Pastor revealed that the first allelectric Seat would arrive before the large SUV model. This suggests that the car may be a new model entirely, or, alternatively, an all-electric version of the facelifted Ateca or new Leon, both of which will be due around that time.

Hybrids and electric vehicles were a hot topic at the Leon launch, with the conspicuous absence of an electrified powertrain in the updated Leon sparking discussion about when Seat's first such model would come.

Another source at Seat revealed that hybrid powertrains are at present too expensive for the brand's target market but that concrete plans to build EVs from 2019 are in place.

Less clear was the firm's stance on when hybrids would first bear a Seat badge, but Seat dowsed speculations of an upcoming hybrid, saying such a model will not exist “within two years”.

Pastor also played down talk of fully autonomous Seats any time soon, saying fully autonomous cars were still a few years off and that Seat models will have to reflect the brand DNA in other ways on the advent of autonomous cars.

Seat sources, including Pastor, remained tight-lipped on the subject of a large SUV, saying only Seat is "thinking of" such a model at this stage.

Mini to build plug-in hybrid powertrain

British brand Mini has confirmed that it will build a plug-in hybrid model “soon”, as the development process has “almost been completed”.

According to the BMW-owned company, the driver will spot little difference between the standard car and the more environmentally friendly version. The charging socket is integrated into the side scuttle, and the cockpit is more or less unchanged, barring the power switch that glows yellow, rather than red.

On the road, Mini is promising similar driving dynamics, too. The chassis and suspension set-up is identical to that of the standard car, and the position of the hybrid components means there’s a low

centre of gravity.

However, the hybrid will provide four-wheel drive by sending the electric power to the rear wheels while the internal combustion engine powers the front.

Mini has not given any indication of the car’s range or economy figures, but the company has said the new hybrid will be capable of driving in pure-electric mode, while boasting a fully electric top speed of 78mph.

Mini’s head of brand management, Sebastian Mackensen, said: “With this model we want to convince Mini customers of the benefits of hybrid drive and impress everyone who already has hybrid driving experience with Mini’s unique go-kart driving feel.”

The role that the SEAT 600 played in the democracy of modern Spain

By David Hudson The SEAT 600 is not just an iconic car but possibly the only car that helped with bringing modern democracy to Spain. It all started just after the end of the Spanish Civil War, when almost 90% of Spain's population were peasants.

However, due to government policy, in just ten years almost 80% were able to read and write. This gave everyone the ability for independent information and decision making unlike before, when they had to rely on being told what is what.

The government also provided a scheme for basic cheap food similar to the UK after the war with subsidised bread and milk. The Bars were also encouraged to produce a cheap midday meal – Menu del Dia or Menue diario for workers. This was to help in building a healthier population and for the first time in Spanish history, there was an agricultural policy that made working on the land more prosperous. Now the final part on the road to democracy came when the directors of a new company in Barcelona called SEAT, visited the Geneva Motor Show in 1954 and returned with the licence to produce the FIAT 600.

This little economical, easy and cheap to maintain and run car that could hold four people, was an overnight success and after two years the order book had to be closed to meet demand. Now the working class could freely explore their country and meet their countrymen and not rely on public services and their attitude that the 600 could go anywhere

including off road, meant nothing was unattainable.

As this is the 60th Anniversary of the SEAT 600 we thought that we should do something to help in celebrating its 60 years. Thus we set about trying to inform as many countries as possible of the Anniversary. We ask all you motoring enthusiasts out there if you could help us promoting this event And I have attached a tale of the Guinness World Record which is quite a turn around because in the 90s the 600 was in risk of being crushed out of existence.

On 9th January 2003 I joined thirteen Spaniards to form the first Spanish speaking 600 & Classic club in this area and became their Vice President. It was their attitude that the 600 could go anywhere that gave me the sense of adventure and the idea to drive from Torrevieja in Alicante to Madrid with my wife Angie taking with us a gift and letter from the Mayor of Torrevieja, to the Mayor of Madrid to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 600 and cement the relationship between the two cities.

Driving in the Centre of Madrid in a little 600 is an experience that not many Spaniards would do by themselves without a police escort.

Besides travelling 2,500kms in five days on a round trip to Portugal for our 45th Wedding Anniversary in 2007, we have also visited the walled cities of Toledo and Avila, the historic cities of Valladolid, Burgos and Segovia, driving under, over and around Madrid, Cordoba, Jaen, Cuenca, Sevilla, Merida and a weekend drive over five mountains to Ubida in Andalusia. When I was running late to lead a carnival procession in Roldan, I drove through a storm drain that was just inches bigger than the 600, under a dual motorway to get there in time. Once when we were bored I took the mountain dirt track a little wider than the 600

from Lorca in Murcia with a 200m sheer drop to the river below for 20kms: a bit hairy! Another time I was paid a 100â‚Ź and joined a hundred 600s to chauffeur 3,000 delegates at a Conference near Alicante. To date, we have driven a total of 90,000kms in Spain and Portugal.

Corgi Top Ten are added to the totals already received.

It may be hard to believe that model toy maker Corgi celebrates its 60th anniversary next year and to celebrate, they are working on their Ultimate Top Ten and want lovers of the model cars, plans, trains and accessories to cast their votes. While nobody would dare play with an original James Bond DB5 from Goldfinger, or a Batmobile or even Captain Scarlet or a Black Beauty from the Green Hornet, they want to hear from you.

Last month the ‘Ultimate Corgi Top Ten’ was announced and they say: “we have been absolutely inundated with nominations and photographs from our readers, determined to help us mark this 60th Anniversary year in style. With entries coming by e-mail, on our social media sites, or on the Corgi forum, Corgi collectors have been keen to register their votes and help to ensure that their favourite models appear in our top ten list at the end of the year. If you have yet to place your vote, please do so as soon as you can, as the open voting will end on Sunday 13th November, when the top 20 model nominations will go forward to the final stage and the creation of our ‘Ultimate Corgi Top Ten’ list.

Many of the nominations received so far have also included some quite humbling descriptions of how much Corgi models have meant to people over the past 60 years and how model collecting continues to be enjoyed by many.

Some respondents describe how their favourite models were the ones they remembered playing with as youngsters and how the Corgi catalogue would be required reading throughout the years and

especially in the weeks leading up to birthdays and Christmas. Others describe how they attempted to build a collection of models when they became older and had more disposable income, but collecting the models they played with when younger, or buying the models they always wanted when young, but were never fortunate enough to get. What has proved to be quite surprising is the fact that very few models from the past few years have been nominated so far, which is clearly suggesting that many of the classic, earlier Corgi models are held in great affection by model collectors.

Perhaps the least surprising aspect of the nominations received so far is the almost total domination of TV and Film related models in our list. Some readers have voted for just a single model, whilst others have nominated a full list of ten, but in many of these cases, either the James Bond Aston Martin DB5, or the Batmobile feature prominently, with both of these classic models currently vying for the top spot in our list. Some of the more unusual suggestions that are currently doing extremely well in the poll are the American La France Aerial Rescue Fire Engine and the Ford Holmes Wrecker, which tells another story about the Corgi models that youngsters enjoyed playing

Your collections need you - this is a final call to action for collectors who have yet to vote in our poll and have enjoyed collecting with us over the years. With certain ranges currently lagging a little behind, we need Modern Truck, Vanguards, Military Vehicle and Aviation Archive collectors to send us their nominations, to see if any of these models can stand a chance of appearing in the ‘Ultimate Corgi Top Ten’ list and challenge the domination of the TV and Film models.

Why You Shouldn’t Cut Out CarbsWhen Dieting Ditching potatoes, pasta and bread is one of the most common weight-loss strategies, which has become popular due to diet plans such as Atkins and South Beach. But carbohydrates actually provide fewer calories per gram than fat, protein or alcohol and according to recommendations from the Food Standards Agency on good health, should make up approximately 50 percent of our daily calorie intake.

Carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of energy, and are quickly and easily converted to blood glucose, the body cells’ preferred source of fuel. In particular, the brain must have glucose as a source of energy. The brain will not use other sources of energy except in the extreme case of starvation, in which ketone bodies (from the breakdown of body fat) are used by the brain. The body cannot store a large amount of carbohydrate; there is only a short supply available as glycogen in the liver and muscle. Therefore,

carbohydrates must be supplied on a regular basis.

The problem is not that carbohydrates are bad, says weight-management expert Sarah Russell, it’s just that we tend to eat too much of them. Foods such as pasta, bread, pizza, cakes and cereal bars are quick, easy and readily available as convenience foods, leading us to consume far more than we need.

Cutting them out sometimes brings about rapid weight loss, but is not the long-term answer for a healthy, balanced diet.

It's also what you add to the carbohydrates that bump up the calories. For example, the margarine or butter we put on the bread and the cream or cheese sauces we add to pasta.

The Solution Instead of cutting out potatoes, rice, pasta and bread altogether, simply go for smaller portions — no bigger than your fist — and spread them out through the day. This

will help keep your blood-sugar levels steady and hunger at bay. Aim for more variety as well; for example oats for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and a rice salad for dinner, and balance it out with plenty of protein, fruit, salad and vegetables.

Also, if you need to lose weight, cut down on the added fats (margarine, cream or cheese sauce), not the carbs.

To beat hunger pangs, lose weight and stay healthy, try these healthy carb tips: Substitute bran flakes for frosted flakes Substitute whole wheat bread for regular white bread Substitute rice cakes for cereal/granola bar Substitute wholegrain/whole wheat baguette for French bread Substitute whole wheat pasta for regular pasta Substitute brown rice for regular white rice Add wheatgerm and oats to your cereal Add chopped fruit to your cereal, salads and stews Serve beans, lentils and extra vegetables with your main meal

Caring for your Skin in Cold Weather When temperatures drop it is time to think of how cold weather, chilling winds and dry air will affect your skin. We naturally think of bundling up during those frosty months but there are a few other considerations.

1. Keep your face protected by using heavier moisturisers, especially if you have dry skin. Always wear foundation when weathering the cold — give your face that extra protection. Don't forget the rest of your skin and use body washes instead of harsh soaps. Use lukewarm water and keep hot water off your face and body — it's drying in the best of times. Apply moisturiser after showering, while you skin is still damp.

2. During the winter the UV rays reflecting off the snow have an added ability to damage your skin. While skiing, snowboarding or enjoying any outdoor sports remember to wear a SPF of 15 or more. Don't forget that UV rays can harm your eyes as well, so keep them protected with sunglasses.

3. Keep your hands dry and warm during the winter months by always wearing gloves; keep moisturiser close at all times and reapply often.

Pets are great companions; they keep us happy and contribute a great deal towards our well-being.

It has been known for a long time that people with pets live happier lives, but did you know your pet could also contribute towards your health as well?

4. Winter is the worst time of the year to keep nails in good shape. To avoid brittle nails moisturise your cuticles before going to bed. Always protect your hands with rubber gloves when you use cleaning products. Some are harsh and will seep into your nails and make them brittle.

5. Keep your lips protected from dry, cold air by wearing lipstick regularly. Make a habit of reapplying lipstick so your lips are always covered (except when you sleep) and you will never have chapped lips.

6. Exfoliate your face and body regularly to smooth away dry patches or prevent them.

7. Visit a spa and get pampered.

Believe it or not, having a pet can improve your health. Pets can help lower stress levels, keep you active and keep your heart healthy, to name but a few. By now you’re probably confused, looking at your dog or cat and wondering, “Really, can Scruffy really help me stay healthy?”

Pets and stress Research has shown that you can lower your stress levels simply by stroking your pet. Even enjoying the summer sun playing “fetch” with your dog or watching your fish swim around in their aquarium can reduce stress levels. Spending some one-onone time with your canine companion or fury feline, in fact any pet, will more than likely produce a calming effect that slows down your heart rate and keeps your blood pressure under wraps therefore

lowering stress levels.

Pets and exercise If you’re not the type for physical activity, then you may be putting your health at risk. Having a pet can lower this risk by simply taking him or her for a stroll down to the neighbourhood park or even down the street. Taking your dog for a walk is not always considered “exercise” and many find it to be a relaxing way to spend time with your pooch while at the same time enjoying the great outdoors.

Pets and your heart Pets contribute to a healthy heart because of their gift to allow us to relax and for a little while, freeing our mind from stressful situations or thoughts. Another way to work towards a healthy heart is via physical activity — remember that taking your pet for a walk can contribute to this too, and walking him or her is a fun activity that is soothing, relaxing and above all enjoyable.

Arab Influence in Spanish food

It really isn't possible to speak about Spanish food or the Mediterranean diet without noting the importance of the rich legacy of Al-Andalus gastronomy. Much of the current cuisine of the Iberian country is heir of the Muslim tradition, an empire that occupied up to 70% of the country at some point. This occupation extended from 711 to 1492, the year that Spain was unified and America was discovered.

Al-Andalus gastronomy is much reflected in the Mediterranean diet, with some variations of course, such as the consumption of pork. This inheritance is specially marked in Andalusia, where gazpachos and other cold soups are originally from, but this influence is also reflected in other areas such as Alicante (Valencia) where a typical nougat is made, Murcia, Almeria and many more regions.

Just like in any other gastronomy, different food was consumed according to social class, cities and rural areas. The preparation methods varied as well. The tradition of AlAndalus gastronomy is very rich and varied. They had less prohibitions than Jews, in fact mainly pork and fermented drinks were forbidden, however this precept was not always respected or followed 100% in Muslim Spain.

The Arab tradition in Spain also contributed to the Spanish vocabulary. If you study Spanish in Spain you will learn all about this.

The higher classes consumed little or no fish and shellfish.

There was no religious prohibition related to products from the sea, but rather it was the doctors that discouraged them from the kitchens, arguing that it's pestilent odour and strong taste was not healthy.

Nowadays fried fish is very common in the gastronomy of the southern Spanish region of Andalusia.

However the Al-andalus gastronomy of the more humble classes, specially those who lived near the coasts ate plenty of fish; raw, fried or salted, the most common were sardines and tuna. In fact, one of the main cookery techniques that the Arabs brought to Spain was pickling, especially fish in vinegar solutions.

Today, you will find that pickled anchovies and sardines are commonly eaten as a tapa when served on a piece of bread.

There are many products that the Arabs introduced in the Iberian peninsula: eggplant, spinach, sugar cane, rice, apricots and citric among others. It's true that olives have been

Method 1. Peel and finely slice the garlic, then trim and slice the fennel. Pick and roughly chop the parsley leaves, and roughly chop the stalks.

2. Heat a good lug of oil in a saucepan and gently fry the garlic till golden.

3. Add the fennel and parsley stalks, then reduce the heat to low and sauté for 10 minutes, or until softened but not coloured.

4. Halve half the tomatoes, leaving the rest whole, then add to the pan with the wine. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, or until thickened. If it’s too thick, add a splash of water.

5. Peel the prawns, leaving the tails on,

The Moors didn't drink alcohol for religious purposes so they have developed these stills to create alcohols for medicinal purposes instead, as well as to produce perfumes. However, the Spanish used them to make alcohols that were able to be drunk such as licor de orujo, which is made from grape must.

Other areas of the Spanish gastronomy that were affected by the Moors include desserts. The Moors brought sugar-cane to Spain and taught the Spanish how to refine it. This helped to revolutionise Spanish cakes and other sweets which has generally been made in a similar fashion to bread and then sweetened with honey. Other desserts influenced by the Moorish culture include arrope, a syrup which is used in a similar way to marmalade.

Wall Of Death

CD Torrevieja have now reached rock bottom.

They can;t go any lower than were they are, as prop up the bottom of their division after Sunday's loss to Muro, translated as The Wall.

An uninspired Torrevieja team lost at home 1:3 against Muro, who until beating Torre, they themselves held that bottom spot. The loss opens up a very serious wound in future forecast of whether ot not the team can survive or be relegated this season.

After winning their first game of the season with a spirited performance against Buñol the week before, hopes were high of two wins in a row, however with Torre defence looking vulnerable throughout the game, and the front three almost totally infective against their opponents, what the future holds for the team does not look bright.

Technically the team are also with an official coach or manager although last season's coach

maybe show their worth or maybe change the game around, as both Brandon and Alvaro possessed the pace to take on Muro's fullbacks, while the starting pair did not. Yet another example of how Torrevieja have not pushed forward their youth players, with possibly two exceptions, Captain Lewis and Damian, who has returned to the club to regain his fitness from injury, after spending a number of years at Atletico Madrid.

Sadly, all three of CF Torrevieja's other senior teams all lost, so it was yet another poor weekend for local football in the City of Salt but not just up the road where CD Montesinos beat Racing Playas de OrihuelaL 3:2. The fortunes of CD Montesinos may be about to change with their new manager Carlos Perez (Juan Carlos Perez Olano) who took over from previous manager Camacho. Carlos is an experienced manager who comes to Monte after spending five seasons at Torrevieja CF, with whom he won promotion two seasons ago.

Unfortunately, CD Torrevieja's coaches have not been known for going and watching the junior teams play and although at 1:3, wth nothing to lose, and two wingers who had been almost totally ineffective the entire game, the team did not give any of their youngsters sitting on a bench even five minutes to

Carlos Perez, who has run his own insurance company in Torrevieja for the past 14 years, arrived in Torrevieja 20 years ago. He had been taken from his home town near Leon by his parents to Germany as a youngster and returned to trial with Valencia CF before finally playing for their reserve side, Mestalla. On leaving Mestalla he went on a long journey playing for clubs all over Spain including Alcoyano, Numancia, Melilla and a host of other sides before ending up in Torrevieja towards the end of his career where he played for the Torrevieja side managed by Macan in the 2002/3 season. Once his playing days were behind him, Carlos took up management at clubs like Bigastro (who he got promotion with), Guardamar and then Torrevieja CF with whom he also won promotion.

So how did he end up with us here at “Monte”? Carlos takes up the story…. “When I left Torrevieja CF after five good seasons, I was naturally disappointed. But that’s football and those of us involved in the management part of the game understand that these things happen. During pre-season I came and watched one of the matches at the Municipal and was impressed with the set up. It struck me that this was a well run club. I also knew some of the committee members

and noticed the excellent support at the club even though it was a friendly. The next thing I know is late last Sunday evening the club got in touch with me, explained the situation and asked me to take over, which I did on Monday night at the training session”.

He was asked what his impressions were of the team he has inherited? “It´s difficult for me to answer that question truthfully as I have, literally, just taken over. But from the little I have seen I feel there is enough to work with. We are probably a little short on fitness and perhaps some of the player´s confidence has been “knocked” after two big defeats. We also need to factor in the injuries and suspensions we have to important players. I do however feel that once those players start to come back, we will have a competitive side” And about the Full Monte supporters club?

“Everybody connected with the club speaks very highly about the Full Monte and all the great work you do for the Club. I was lucky enough to live something like this years ago at Torrevieja and still remember the fantastic support we got there. I am also amazed at the attendance figures this club gets and I am sure that is also down to the Full Monte in a big way. I am looking forward to help increase the crowd figures although I am realistic enough to know that more people will only come to watch us IF we start winning and playing good football. It will be a pleasure to meet as many of you as possible, so when you see me at the ground, come over and say hello or hola etc” It goes without saying that the club wish Carlos and his assistant, Angel Ivan, lots of luck.
