Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Annual Maintenance Why are the Pools shut down for Annual Maintenance The simple answer to this question is that the pools are shutdown in an effort to reduce the chances of an unexpected shutdown during regular operation of the facilities throughout the rest of the year and to keep the facilities in the best possible operating condition. Does this mean that there won’t be breakdowns outside of Annual Maintenance - unfortunately we cannot guarantee that there will be no equipment malfunctions the rest of the year as Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik pools are relatively old facilities. Annual Maintenance is the best way to minimize the chances of breakdowns. During shutdown all equipment that is critical to the operation of the pool is serviced such as pumps, filters and chlorination systems. The pools are drained and cleaned (painted in the case of Fritz Sick and Stan Siwik). Other repairs and general maintenance of the remainder of the facility are also completed. Annual Shutdowns are scheduled to have the least impact on programs such as lessons, swim clubs etc so dates are strategically placed between lesson sets. Having safe water & safe facilities (clean & sanitary) is critical to the operation of the pools as Alberta Health Services conducts stringent water tests and regular inspections of the facilities to ensure that they are safe for the public. Recreation Excellence’s role is to work with the City to ensure this happens. Routine maintenance along with Annual Shutdowns helps to ensure that we are complying with all AHS guidelines.

Income Tax Income Tax turns 100 this year!
Who was initially affected by the Act? In August 1917 the federal government passed the Income War Tax Act, which introduced a new temporary measure to help pay for the First World War, a tax that would be based on the yearly income of Canadians. There were concerns whether the tax was legal as “direct taxation” was the purview of the provinces. So the tax was called temporary and brought in as part of war measures. Of course, this “temporary” tax remains 100 years later.
“It affects all incorporated companies, associations, partnerships, trustees and persons, whether male or female, having an income of fifteen hundred dollars in the case of unmarried persons and widows or widowers without dependent children, and three thousand dollars in the case of all other persons.” The tax was 4% but there was also a “supertax” for those making in excess of $6000. The highest rate (for those making more than $100,000) was 25%.

Christmas Bird Count Did you know?
“Prior to the turn of the 20th century, people engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas “Side Hunt”: They would choose sides and go afield with their guns; whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginning stages around that era, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, an early officer in the then nascent Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition – a “Christmas Bird Census” – that would count birds during the holidays rather than hunt them. So began the Christmas Bird Count.” Source: www.audubon.org/conservation/science/christmas-bird-count

This year is the 118th annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC). Christmas Bird Counts are conducted between December 14th and January 5, inclusive dates, each season. Each count takes place in the same established 15-mile (24km) wide diameter circle every year. Every CBC is done by willing and dedicated volunteers Data provided helps researchers, biologists and wildlife agencies to study the longterm health and status of bird populations across North America. Lethbridge CBC averages 42 different species per count with 40 species counted in 2016 (due to weather). 9839 Canada Geese were counted in 2016. Mallards, Pigeons, Magpies, Chickadees, Starlings, Bohemian Waxwings, House Finches and House Sparrows are some of the most frequent birds counted.

Thanks Lethbridge! The Lethbridge Sport Council, as part of our Lethbridge 2017: Get Active Through Sport initiative, had 2 key initiatives this past year, #YQLChallenge: 150 Things to do in Lethbridge and 52 in 52 – try 52 sports in 52 weeks. Although the year is not quite done, and there are still more opportunities to be active, we wanted to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to all who participated and made this years so much fun!
Nearly 100 families, teams, groups and individuals registered for #YQLChallenge! But just because 2017 is nearly over, doesn’t mean the challenge has to end. Most of the activities that were part of the challenge are things you can do anytime, anywhere. So come on Lethbridge, Get Active Through Sport!
