Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Cover Photos (c) of World Curling Federation - Printed in Canada

Welcome to the April 2017 Recreation & Culture Guide Spring has arrived! What an exciting few months we have ahead of us, particularly in the way of recreation and leisure. As temperatures rise, so do the wide range of activities we can enjoy. City parks are a great place to be active and have fun with your family. Did you know Lethbridge has more maintained park space than any other city in Canada? We have fantastic playground equipment and sports fields that will soon be full of happy, active residents. If you’re curious about what’s out there, you’re in the right place. The Leisure Guide is your key to all things happening in Lethbridge. Find clubs, leagues, teams, events and classes so you can start painting, running, biking, swimming, learning and exploring. There really is something for everyone, regardless of your age or ability. All of these planned activities and events are great but don’t forget about nature. The beauty of our City really shines through this time of year and I encourage you to take it all in. I hope to see you on the trails at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre this season. The Alexander Galt Museum has a full schedule of programs and exhibits for all ages including activities at Fort WhoopUp. Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens will celebrate its 50th Anniversary this year and will open for the season in May. Make sure you mark your calendar for their grand celebrations taking place on July 14th and 15th. Of course we can also enjoy activities in our downtown which will be home to a multitude of festivals over the coming months as we prepare to celebrate Canada 150! Visit the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and CASA to find out what’s happening on the Lethbridge art scene and maybe indulge your creative side. We have a wonderful city with much to offer. Whatever you choose, I know you and your family will find a fun adventure waiting for you. Come out and play!

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Admission Policy Why is there an Admission Policy at the pools?

As “the Lifeguarding Experts” the Lifesaving Society has been setting the standard for Lifeguarding for over 45 years. The Lifesaving Society helps to set Aquatic Safety Standards in Canada in an effort to fulfill their Mission Statement : To prevent drowning and water-related incidents for all Canadians by providing: - lifesaving, lifeguarding, and leadership education - public education - water safety research In the Public Aquatic Facility Safety Standards manual it is stated that Admission Policies shall be established as part of the facility rules including items such as minimum age and requirements for supervision of children. As an affliate of the Lifesaving Society Recreation Excellence follows the standards set out by the Society and their efforts to prevent drowning. Secondary to the safety of the child is the risk management issues that could arise should any orgranization involved in Lifegaurding choose not to follow these standards. As a responsible company Recreation Excellence makes every effort to ensure the safety of the patrons that come to the facilities we operate. The Lifesaving Society continually reviews and makes changes to standards and such items like Admission Policies can change as standards change. The current policy at the Lethbridge Pools is: “Children under the age of 8yrs and those that can’t swim must be within arms reach of an Adult” If you are not within arms reach you have gone too far - it only takes seconds for the unthinkable to happen and even though pools are supervised it is everyone’s responsibility for the safety of a child.

Battle of Vimy Ridge, April 1917 In April 1917, the Canadian Corps was involved in one of their greatest battles of the First World War – the Battle of Vimy Ridge. This April, 100 years later, people across Canada reflect on the battle and what it means to Canadians.

Both the British and French armies had attempted to take Vimy Ridge from the Germans. Both had failed. In the spring of 1917, it was Canada’s turn to try to win this piece of high ground. Canada succeeded. But in order to take this vital hill, Canadians had to develop new tactics and new methods. Canadians trained on German guns so they could use them once they were captured, knowing their own artillery would take a while to bring the guns across the muddy land. Canadians changed the way machine guns were

used in the battle, using them offensively rather than defensively as the British and French did. Canadians also developed the creeping barrage. These, and other tactics, made the difference. This battle was also the first time Canadian troops fought together as one unit under Canadian command. Then, and now, Vimy Ridge is recognized as a great source of pride for Canada, showing that Canada was its own nation, separate from Britain.

Many Canadians paid the ultimate sacrifice for Vimy Ridge as 3598 Canadian soldiers were killed during the battle and many others died defending Vimy. Numerous southern Albertans were involved in the battle and several men whose names are on the cenotaphs of southern Alberta were killed at Vimy Ridge.

Western Meadowlark Did you know?  

 

One thing to watch for is their feeding behavior called ‘gaping’ which “relies on the unusually strong muscles that open their bill. They insert their bill into the soil, bark or other substrate, then force it open to create a hole. This gives meadowlarks access to insects and other food items most other birds cannot reach.” Gaping is also used by other members of the blackbird family.

The Western Meadowlark has a varied diet that is seasonally dependent. It is common for them to forage for grain seeds in winter and spring; forage insects in the summer; and forage weed seeds in fall. Source: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Western_Meadowlark/

Did You Know?

Western Meadowlarks have been spotted back in the area as of midMarch! These spring migrants are returning from their winter grounds in Mexico and Central America in order to find a suitable nesting site. The female Western Meadowlark will choose the nesting spot on the ground in prairie, pasture, or grassland habitat. She will spend 8 days building a durable nest that blends in to the surroundings!

Western Meadowlarks are about the size of a robin Look for the characteristic yellow underparts and black V collar Look for the Meadowlarks in open spaces, often alone in the summer time Usually flies low—below the horizon Not seen regularly at backyard feeders, they will occasionally visit feeding stations in open habitats.

Healthy tips over Easter break With spring well underway, Easter holidays are right around the corner. This typically means a couple days off work, laying around and eating an abundance of chocolate eggs. Here are several tips to make this Easter holiday slightly healthier, while ensuring you can still enjoy and take full advantage of the holiday with friends and family! 1. Keep the Easter eggs for Easter - as tempting as it is to unwrap the brightly coloured foil and chow down a few days early, save the treats and enjoy them with your family on Easter. 2. Opt for quality over quantity - instead of buying a bulk bag of sub-par chocolate, try splurging on a fancier piece of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is better for you and loaded with antioxidants. 3. Make the focus on family fun - Easter is typically full of treats and big meals. Plan some family activities that involve getting outside and enjoying the beautiful spring weather! 4. Fill up on Vegetables - the fiber in vegetables will help fill you up and reduce snacking. 5. It is all about moderation - allow yourself to enjoy the holidays while making smart choices.
