100 th Anniversary of Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Association Unit No. 34 The 19 April 1920 Lethbridge Daily Herald carried a notice to Army & Navy Veterans that there was to be a meeting at Lethbridge City Hall on April 21 to decide whether a branch of the Army and Navy Veterans Association should be formed in Lethbridge. The invitation was open to all veterans, soldiers and sailors of all campaigns and wars and long service members of military units. At the April 21 meeting, chaired by Inspector Shoebotham and with John Reid acting as secretary, the decision was made to form a unit. A meeting was to be held a week later at the YMCA to elect the executive officers for the upcoming year.
The Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Association is the oldest veterans’ association in Canada. The group gives their date of origin as 1840 as a Montreal unit was given a charter from Queen Victoria at that time, though it is believed that other groups may have existed prior.
The Association originally met in the basement of the Dominion Block. The group constructed their club rooms at 517 5 Avenue South in 1928; the building has been renovated and expanded several times since then.

UNITED WAY HELPED JAYCE’S KIDS DEVELOP CONFIDENCE IN THEIR READING SKILLS... “When I learned that my daughter, Nadine, was reading at a pre-K level in grade 2, it felt like a punch to the gut. I’m a single mother of four kids and had just entered university. I was so busy, I didn’t realize she was floating under the radar. Once I knew, though, my focus became enhancing all my kids’ learning abilities. At first, I thought a literacy camp would just give Nadine extra practice, but right away, she showed so much improvement. She came home every day with stories about reading books with the volunteers, and I thought, ‘I want my daughter to have this much excitement reading with her mom.’ Within the first week, I was getting pamphlets on how to make reading fun and engaging for parents, too. I was glad to get them—they’ll help me in the future with my two younger children.”

Yellowbells Did you know?
Often found in dry coulee areas, yellowbells are only found in southwestern Alberta and are a welcome sight in the spring landscape. As these flowers age they will change colour from yellow to orange to red—making them a treat every time you pass them by on your coulee adventures.
City of Lethbridge
As with any wildflower it is best to enjoy it in place—do not try to transplant it into your garden!! Even the most cautious gardeners have difficulty in successfully transplanting wildflowers and most end up dead thereby reducing wild populations drastically.
18
Rather, enjoy all the wildflowers that Lethbridge coulees have to offer by leaving them in place for others to enjoy after you! Add wildflowers to your garden by visiting a local garden centre to get seeds, bulbs, and good advice.
Explore our events calendar for a list of upcoming speakers and field trips at www.NatureLethbridge.ca
Fritillaria pudica, known as yellowbells are part of the Lily family Yellowbells are among the first blooms of the spring season! Usually flowers in Lethbridge coulees mid-April to mid-May A small plant approx. 35cm tall Nodding flowers have 6 yellow petal–like sepals called tepals with a purple ring at the base Leaves are strap-shaped and blue-green in colour Of the 50 species of Fritillaria found in the Northern Hemisphere only yellowbells are found in Alberta! The starchy roots and bulbs are a good food source for ground squirrels and pocket gophers.
