Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. (see rates below).

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Family Change Room Guidelines We sometimes get comments about patrons using change rooms of the opposite sex. Generally this involves younger children and sometimes special needs patrons. The fact that Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran, Stan Siwik and Henderson Pools were built many years ago at time when accessibility was not as big a consideration is the major factor creating this issue. Some family change rooms have been added to both Nicholas Sheran, Stan Siwik and most recently Henderson Pool that have helped to alleviate the problem however the cost to provide unrestricted access may be expensive and some would say the money would be better spent on a new facility. The general guideline that we use is that we ask patrons with children in the age range of 6 years & up to use the proper public change room or the Family change rooms (if the parent is incomfortable with them changing alone). If someone does use opposite sex change rooms with a child that is “older” we will suggest alternatives as our goal is not to be confrontational but rather to find a solution that works for everyone which most times is easier said than done. The best is to try to work with each other to make it as comfortable as possible for everyone. Some suggestions include but are not limited to: 1) Only use the Family Change rooms if you need to - this will keep them open for those that do need to use them 2) Use change stalls with the curtains if available in the public change rooms 3) Ask the staff for other alternatives for pools like Fritz that don’t have Family Change rooms 4) Be tolerant of other peoples feelings 5) Be tolerant of the staff - likely they are asking because another patron has raised their concern and they are caught in the middle of a difficult situation dealing with patrons that are likely older than them.

Longest School Vacation in Alberta History? In 1943, during the Second World War, it was decided to close schools across the province from the end of June until October 10. The plan was to have students replace workers on farms and at other work places during the labour shortage that resulted from the war. Was the long vacation a success? The 8 October 1943 Lethbridge Herald suggested that many students and parents were very eager for the long vacation to be over and for the regular school routine to resume. According to the paper there “were many weeks when the little folk loafed aimlessly and to no good.” Church sponsored Vacation Schools tried to fill the gap as much as they could but the long vacation was difficult for many young children and their parents.

though, found gainful employment and helped relieve the labour shortage. It wasn’t just the boys who found jobs to support the war effort. In June (before the vacation started), female LCI students were trying to get jobs as paper deliverers, theatre ushers and telegraph deliverers to replace boys so they could go and work on the farms.

This was the reality for some of the younger students; some older students,

Pollinators Did you know? 

Many wasps, ants, flies, beetles and even the male mosquito all play an important role in pollinating plants.

Birds, like a hummingbird, and bats are also pollinators

Planting a variety of plants will attract many different pollinators to your backyard or planter garden.

Avoid or limit the use of pesticides in your yard and garden

Leave some debris in your yard for pollinators to nest, raise their young, and over winter

Pollinators are hard-working animals that help pollinate over 75% of our flowering plants, and nearly 75% of our crops. Without them, wildlife would have fewer nutritious berries and seeds, and we would miss many fruits, vegetables, and nuts, like blueberries. Squash, and almonds… not to mention chocolate and coffee… all of which depend on pollinators! The main threats facing pollinators are habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation. As native vegetation is replaced by roadways, manicured lawns, crops and non-native gardens, pollinators lose the food and nesting sites that are necessary for their survival.

The Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society

Here are several ways to make your garden a haven for pollinators: Join us to learn more about 1. Use pollinator friendly plants in your landscapes; your natural world! 2. Choose a mixture of plants for spring, summer, and fall; 3. Reduce or eliminate pesticide use in your landscape, or incorporate Next meeting: plants that attract beneficial insects for pest control; 4. Accept some plant damage on plants to provide habitat for LNS Potluck pollinators; and at Popson Park 5. Provide clean water in a shallow dish with some debris to rest on. Brothers and sisters of a child with special needs will now have their own specialized group experience with others who understand and "get it.” Siblings will have an opportunity to meet others, in a safe environment where they will be able to share their stories and experiences of living with an individual who has special needs. This group is led by a Canadian Certified Counsellor and the key objectives of the group will be to explore elements of how their sibling’s diagnosis affects the family as a whole, how they themselves are impacted (such as issues of jealousy, parent/child relationship and sibling relationship), understanding their siblings diagnosis and developing empathy around deficits. Progress will be evaluated through the use of pre-tests and post-tests with both the participants and their parents.

TEAM LETHBRIDGE AT THE GAMES!

The City of Lethbridge finished second overall behind the MD of Taber. We had 401 participants who collected a combined 257 medals: 95 individual gold, 18 team gold, 62 individual silver, 16 team silver, 59 individual bronze, and 7 team bronze medals. WOW!! Once all the results were tallied, we finished with 3912 total points! This has been Lethbridge's second-best finish in history, only falling behind the 2016 Lethbridge contingent of 600 athletes. In total, there were over 2000 athletes competing at this year’s Games from 13 regions across Southern Alberta. The next Southern Alberta Summer Games will be the 50th anniversary of the Games, to be held in July 2019 in Pincher Creek.

This is a great neighbourhood park. The park boasts a colourful playground featuring slides and climbing apparatus. There is plenty of open space for burning off a little extra energy that’s ideal for a game of tag or tossing a frisbee or ball around. The park has small hills that are great for tobogganing with the little ones.
