Standard First Aid will continue. The Lifesaving Society is taking over that responsibility. We are working with them to program our new Swim for Life Instructor courses and lessons. We're excited for this new chapter and look forward to working with everyone!

Happy 75 th to Mayor Magrath Drive In 1947, the City of Lethbridge renamed Airport Drive to Mayor Magrath Drive.

Council started to call for hard-surfacing of the road.

“Council agreed in the resolution to advise Mr. Magrath that the highway from Third Avenue South southwards to the city limits over the old A.R. and I. railway grade is being named the Mayor Magrath Drive in his honor.”

In May 1947, the road was renamed Mayor Magrath Drive, after Charles Magrath, Lethbridge’s first mayor. Shortly after the road was renamed, the city looked to purchase land to widen Mayor Magrath Drive and started to develop the road we know today.

Mayor Magrath Drive started as the Crow’s Nest Railway in 1897-98. When the Crow’s Nest Railway was redeveloped in 1909, Lethbridge City Council leased, and then purchased, the railway right-of-way of the old track for a road into Lethbridge from the south. It was originally called the Southeast Entrance Road.

The photograph shows Airport Drive in June 1939 when it experienced a traffic jam during the official opening of the airport.

Initially the road was simply a narrow, unimproved road along the top of the old railway grade. When Kenyon Field Airport developed south of Lethbridge in the late 1930s, the road became known as Airport Drive and

arts in lethbridge arts feature Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Club Troyanda’s mandate to promote and preserve the art of Ukrainian Dance in southern Alberta is more important than ever. Many club members are affected by the war in Ukraine and it can feel challenging to keep dancing, but they have been emboldened to fight to keep Ukrainian culture alive locally as well as around the world. The club thanks the community for reaching out to partner with them in many fundraising events to benefit humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

Dancing through a pandemic has been challenging for the club, as it has been for many of the performing arts groups. Troyanda is thrilled to be able to offer the Grade Three Curriculum shows, after a two-year break, to the students of Lethbridge and surrounding areas. These important shows, providing education on Ukrainian culture and traditions, will once again be held at the Yates on May 16. Students will even be invited on stage to learn some Ukrainian dance steps.

Dance for Ukraine, a special benefit concert for Ukraine, will be taking place at the Genevieve E. Yates Memorial Centre on Sunday, May 15 at 2:00 pm. Tickets will be by donation with all proceeds going to humanitarian aid for Ukraine. A colourful and lively showcase of dances, costumes, and music from various regions of Ukraine will be presented for all of Lethbridge to enjoy. Troyanda is excited to be able to dance again while providing much needed support for Ukraine.

Currently in their 27th year, Troyanda is honoured to be able to continue sharing Ukrainian culture and is grateful for the ongoing support from the community. There is no limit to those wanting to begin, continue, or renew a love of Ukrainian dance. Troyanda offers dance classes for all ages and abilities. For more information, please e-mail Troyanda@hotmail.ca or visit www.troyanda.ca, and follow the Facebook page.

(Athlete – Basketball)An all-around athlete at Kainai High School on the Blood Reserve, Weasel Head shone on the gridiron for the Warriors football team. But he was even better with a basketball, leading the Warriors to success with his scoring, passing and defense. He starred with the Alberta Juvenile squad in 95'. He was an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference All-star each of his three seasons with the Kodiaks, including a first-team all-star in his last two seasons. He was named to the college All-Canadian squad in 1997-98 while again being honoured as the Kodiaks’ MVP. From there, Weasel Head moved on to the next level, joining the Brandon University Bobcats. He was chosen as a second-team all-star in the Great Plains Athletic Conference in 2001 and was a first-team tournament all-star at the 2001 nationals. The same year, Weasel Head was awarded the Tom Longboat Award for aboriginal sporting excellence, and received the Doug Crandle Student Athlete Award for 2000-01.After earning his general studies degree at Brandon, Weasel Head returned to Southern Alberta to obtain his Education Degree from the University of Lethbridge. Currently Charlton is the associate principal at Kainai High School and the athletic director. He continues to serve as a role model for youth and enjoys watching his son Talon play high school basketball with Catholic Central High School.
