Standard First Aid will continue. The Lifesaving Society is taking over that responsibility. We are working with them to program our new Swim for Life Instructor courses and lessons. We're excited for this new chapter and look forward to working with everyone!

A.E. Cross Studio
Alfred Ernest Cross was born in England around 1890. When he moved to Canada, he went first to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and then came to Lethbridge by 1920. By 1924 he had opened A.E. Cross Studio, a photography business focusing on commercial photography and portraiture, as well as photo finishing and picture framing.
A.E. Cross retired in 1948 and his son, Reginald A. Cross, became manager of the business. The company was renamed A.E. Cross Photography Limited in 1967. The new name was used for only a few years and in 1973 the business returned to its original name of A.E. Cross Studios.
Ed Keeling, who had worked under Reginald Cross, became owner of the
business in 1976. Keeling would in time sell the studio to Peter Etches.
The business moved around over the years, starting at 906 3 Avenue South, then moving to 614 3 Avenue South (in 1927) and then to 710 3 Avenue South in 1952 where it remained until around 2016.

EXHIBITS
Rooted: How Trees Give Us Life is an interactive exhibit that explores the benefits trees provide us on a daily basis. While trees surround us in neighbourhoods and parks, we often see them as abstract objects, rather than as the living, breathing, vital organisms that they are.
By integrating knowledge and stories from many community members, including Niitsitapi knowledge about different species, this exhibit explores the history of trees in southwestern Alberta and helps us understand the history of our region.
Featuring art from local artists, a treehouse and a climbing wall, this exhibit will delight visitors of all ages!

Public transit has played a vital role in Lethbridge’s history ever since the municipal railway system first opened back in 1912. From its humble beginnings with just ten streetcars, to the numerous buses moving people around today, public transportation in Lethbridge has come a long way.
Ticket to Ride features historical artifacts, items from the personal family collection of Lethbridge’s first woman bus driver and authentic bus seating.
Come look into the future by voting for your favourite experimental mode of public travel—automated flight might not be far off!

Christmas at Casa
Celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary, Christmas at Casa is going strong in the downtown core. This annual holiday event has been a mainstay in the Allied Arts Council’s calendar since the opening of Casa in 2013. Growing out of the many craft markets hosted in the Bowman Arts Centre and partnering with downtown holiday festivities, Christmas at Casa has become an annual tradition. For many, this event marks the beginning of the holiday season and gives a head start to holiday shopping.
Planning happens all year round at the Allied Arts Council. Applications for artists and artisans are released in the spring, a community jury selects vendors in the summer, and nal decisions based on space are made in the fall. Each market is a combination of old and new vendors. As well, the market insures a mix of di erent arts and crafts every year. Since its inception, Christmas at Casa has set itself apart with a prioritization of local ne art and ne craft. Half exhibition, half market, visitors can expect truly one-of-a-kind goods with
no kits, imported items or mass-produced gifts. Artists, artisans and local guilds with booths all reside in southern Alberta and are experts in their work. It is common to purchase a wooden bowl or a woven scarf that will often come with an invitation to the next guild meeting if interest is expressed. These special interchanges with artists add a layer of meaning that connect people to their purchase that is hard to nd elsewhere.
In 2020, Christmas at Casa went online allowing the public and artisans to connect via a market website. In 2021, the holiday market returned to an in-person sale with less vendors and timed entry. This year, 2022, Christmas at Casa is completely back with a full suite of artists and artisans, live holiday music, and seasonal food vendors. Community partners include Angel Tree, Lethbridge Food Bank and an eco-wrapping station from Environment Lethbridge. The market is Friday, November 18, 5pm to 9pm and Saturday, November 19, 9am to 5pm. Admission is free, but donations for the food bank are encouraged.

Did you know? AMAPA Greeting Cards
For over 40 years, the Allied Arts Council (AAC) has coordinated art accessibility programming, rst at the Bowman Arts Centre and now at Casa. Accessibility Modi ed Art Programs for Adults (AMAPA) include 2D Art (drawing & painting) and 3D Art (clay handbuilding and wheel), with services in the studio enhanced in 2019 by the addition of a wheelchair accessible clay wheel.
Initiated by artists in the program in 2021, a table at Christmas at Casa sold unique artworks and greeting cards. The greeting cards were so successful that two more additional runs of cards were printed before the holidays. The cards were available downtown at AAC Works.
Due to the success of last years cards, new sets of holiday cards are being produced by the AMAPA artists. Look for the AMAPA table at Christmas at Casa with clay sculptures, original artworks and greeting card designs produced in the program. Cards will also be available at AAC Works.
All of the proceeds from the greeting cards supports the AMAPA programming at Casa.

The Burrowing Owl
Did You Know?
Photo: cbc.ca
Photo: cbc.ca
Photo: sararegistry.gc.ca
The Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia ) gained its name from a particular behaviour: it nests underground. But contrary to the impression given by the bird’s scientific name, which means “little digger,” this owl rarely digs its own burrow. Instead, it constructs its nest in burrows vacated by small mammals like ground squirrels, badgers, and prairie dogs. Burrowing Owls are comical birds that appear to look like a short, fat owl on stilts.
Birds of Prey Centre in Coaldale Closed, will be re-opening May 2023
Photo: hww.ca
With fewer than 1,000 pairs thought to exist in this country, the Burrowing Owl is one of the most endangered birds in Canada’s prairie grasslands. Burrowing Owls are most sensitive to disturbance that causes abandonment immediately prior to, or during, the early stages of egg laying (late April mid May). The major factor contributing to the decline of Burrowing Owls is habitat loss. An equally grave danger to the owls is pesticides.

Upcoming Facility Changes
Important information regarding facility bookings:
Effective October 1, 2022, The City of Lethbridge requires groups/ individuals renting a facility to carry a minimum of $2 million General Liability insurance coverage with the City of Lethbridge identified as an Additional Insured.
A third party online insurance portal in which facility users can purchase coverage at affordable rates is available. You also have the option to contact your own insurance broker or use other online resources to obtain coverage.
What does this mean for me?
This type of coverage ensures that, if you host an event in a City facility, you or your organization are provided protection if you are held responsible for injuries or property damage caused during your event
Insurance is only required for privately booked events that are not hosted by the City of Lethbridge
Insurance is not required for City hosted programming such as public skating and Helen Schuler Nature Centre courses
What are the steps to take?
The portal is located at https://lethbridge.instantriskcoverage.com/
Same day coverage can be arranged. The link will be posted on the City’s website and will also be available through the Facility Programmer who books your events
Once you have obtained your own liability coverage for your facility booking, you will be required to provide proof of insurance to the City of Lethbridge. If using the IRC portal, a certificate will be sent to the City automatically
If you have already provided proof of insurance to the City, there is nothing further for you to do
