Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. Influenza Epidemic of 1918 and 1919 One hundred years ago, in October 1918, the Influenza Epidemic arrived in Lethbridge. The first case occurred on October 11; the rate of infection increased rapidly for the next month or so and then declined until the end of January. A second reoccurrence of Influenza occurred in April 1919.

Through the newspaper and in other ways, the government shared ways people could limit their chances of becoming infected, such as making and wearing masks such as that pictured below.

In 106 days, 129 people from Lethbridge died from the epidemic, though it is likely the actual number was higher as deaths in hotels were not included in these reports. Many public facilities were closed and quarantines were instituted. Under provincial jurisdiction, the entire community of Lethbridge was quarantined for two days during the early days of the epidemic. During the quarantine, officials were particularly concerned about people entering or leaving the community. The doors on trains passing through the city were locked before entering Lethbridge and not unlocked until the train left the community. Volunteers watched all roads into the community and stopped traffic trying to come into the city.

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery is pleased to invite you to a special book reading and discussion in celebration of Vivek Shraya’s newest publication I’m Afraid of Men. In this book, Shraya explores how masculinity was imposed on her as a boy and continues to haunt her as a girl – and how we might reimagine gender for the twenty-first century. Vivek Shraya is an artist whose body of work crosses the boundaries of music, poetry, fiction, visual art, and film.

Tickets available now at SAAG (saag.ca) and Andrew Hilton Wine and Spirits, and includes 7 sample tickets, one slice of pizza & after party admission.

Kids and Youth Programs

Our 7th annual Craft Beer Festival is right around the corner! A highlight of SAAG’s calendar year, we will have a wide variety of vendors who will happily lead you on a journey through some of the best beers around. Last year boasted the most Alberta-based breweries yet, so you can expect to see a lot of provincial pride this year too! As always, we will have delicious pizza by Two Guys & A Pizza Place available to pair with your favourite brew. Get your tickets early – this event is always a sell-out!

Dive into afternoons full of mirth and mischief as we explore endless possibilities in the magic playroom of the Creativity Centre at SAAG. The miniSAAG and kinderSAAG programs focus on supporting young minds in their navigations of the world by using the power of creativity in a safe and caring, handson, artistic environment.

Sit on a volunteer board? Tips for meetings that work

Most sport organization in Lethbridge are run by groups of volunteers who have been elected to sit on the Board of Directors for that organization. As a new board member, it can be tricky to learn all the ins and outs of board governance, and some boards have more effective meetings than others. The following characteristics describe meetings that are ‘a waste of time’:  No agenda, or the agenda is not followed  Materials for the meeting are not given out ahead of time  Little gets accomplished  More than one person talks at once  Some participants dominate the conversation  The meeting goes longer than scheduled  Not everyone participates

Did You Know?

If this describe your meetings then it’s time for a fresh start at your next meeting. Try using this checklist for meetings that work.  Leadership – The chair keeps the meeting on topic and on time.  Participants – All members need to attend, be prepared and participate  Purpose – Always have a goal for what you want to resolve or accomplish  Agenda – Identify how much time should be spent on each agenda item  Minutes – Should be available as soon as possible after the meeting to keep track of progress and inform absent board members  Background – Remember the main purpose of board meetings is to make decisions about the future of the organization. It’s vital to be prepared

46

Willow Brook Park is a long linear park with a fantastic section of paved pathway system that connects to the larger neighbourhood parks, Mike Mountain Horse School and Atso Towaawa Park and on to the rest of West Lethbridge’s interconnected paths. There is also a small playground with a futuristic climbing structure complete with slides, lookouts and even a disc swing. A bench is located near the playground to sit and enjoy the kids playing or take in a good book. The park is full of mature trees and provides a lovely shady canopy in the summer. There is a fair amount of open space in the park ideal for younger children’s play as well as horseshoe pits in the north east corner of the park.
