Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Cover Photos (c) of Alberta Bike Swap - Printed in Canada

Welcome to the April 2018 Recreation & Culture Guide A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman Spring has arrived! After an unusually long winter, we’re all looking forward to spending our recreation and leisure time outdoors! As temperatures rise, so do the wide range of activities we can enjoy. City parks are a great place to be active and have fun with your family. Did you know that Lethbridge maintains over 170 km of paved pathways and approximately 55 kms of natural or gravel trails, 130 parks and over 90 playgrounds for your family to enjoy? If you’re curious about what’s out there, you’re in the right place. The Recreation and Culture Guide is your key to all things happening in Lethbridge. Find clubs, leagues, teams, events and classes so you can start painting, running, biking, swimming, learning and exploring. There really is something for everyone, regardless of your age or ability. Our events calendar is starting to fill up, but don’t forget about nature. The beauty of our City really shines through at this time of year and I encourage you to take it all in. In the river valley, the Helen Schuler Nature Centre offers educational programming and is even home to live creature exhibits! The Alexander Galt Museum has a full schedule of programs and exhibits for all ages including activities at Fort Whoop-Up. Of course we can also enjoy activities downtown which will be home to a multitude of festivals over the coming months. Visit the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and CASA to find out what’s happening on the Lethbridge art scene and maybe indulge your creative side. We have a wonderful city with much to offer. Whatever you choose, I know you and your family will find a fun adventure waiting for you. Come out and play! All the best in the coming year! Chris Spearman, Mayor City of Lethbridge

Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Can You Change the Hours of Operation Hours of Operation Recreation Excellence is very pleased to work with the City of Lethbridge in the delivery of aquatic services within the community of Lethbridge. On occasion our staff get asked if the facilities’ hours of operation could be adjusted. In particular, if the facilities could open earlier on some days. While we are not opposed to adjusting operational schedules, the City of Lethbridge and Recreation Excellence research facility demand and usage. The schedules that exist within the Aquatic Centres in Lethbridge have been developed in an effort to best reflect the needs of the community. In addtion, budget is based on current hours of operation and any additional hours may affect budget considerations.

Aquatics

It is our mandate to operate the Aquatic Facilities in a way that provides as much flexibility as possible while remaining fiscally responsible to the City of Lethbridge and the tax payers of the community. This does not mean that the hours of operation cannot be reviewed from time to time - in fact they are reviewed regularly. Our goal is to serve well in all aspects of the operation of the facilities and to maintain fiscal responsibility to the community of Lethbridge in doing so.

Anna Tilley In 1943, 75 years ago, Anna Tilley resigned. While many people today may not know the name, Anna Tilley had a profound effect on Lethbridge. In 1913, Anna Tilley became the Superintendent of the Nursing Mission, a position she held for the next 30 years. The Nursing Mission was involved in public health services and over the years (from 1908 to 1955) provided many services including baby, mental health and Tuberculosis clinics; school nursing; children’s aid; mothers’ pensions; old age pensions; and pensions and support for soldiers’ dependents. Anna Tilley was a trained social worker and through her work with the Nursing Mission was named a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 1934 and appointed to the Senate of the University of Alberta in 1942.

Pronghorn Antelope The Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society Join us to learn more about your natural world! Next guest speakers are students from Lethbridge College’s Ecosystem Management:

In Alberta pronghorn antelope are found only in the native grassland/sagebrush areas of the southeastern corner. The name “pronghorn” comes from the branching or pronging forward of their horns, however they are not true antelope because their horns are not permanent and the outer sheath is shed every fall. Pronghorn’s bodies are built for high-speed. They have been clocked at over 90 km per hour, second only to Cheetahs in speed, and they can continue to run at high speeds for long distances. Their excellent vision also aids in escaping predation and it is usually just newborn fawns that are at risk, mainly from coyotes. Alberta’s pronghorns are at the northern limit of their range and harsh winters can take a large toll on their population. Fencing of their native rangeland has reduced their habitat and has also made it difficult for them to migrate southward in search of less severe weather.
