Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada
Welcome to the April 2019 Recreation & Culture Guide A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman Spring has arrived and it’s time to get more active outdoors! If you’re curious about what’s out there, you’re in the right place. The Recreation and Culture Guide is your key to all things happening in Lethbridge. Find clubs, leagues, teams, events and classes so you can start painting, running, biking, swimming, learning and exploring. There really is something for everyone, regardless of your age or ability. Lethbridge maintains over 170 km of paved pathways and approximately 55 kms of natural or gravel trails, 130 parks and over 90 playgrounds for your family to enjoy. The “Playground Passport” will help guide your family to discover new parks throughout Lethbridge and win prizes too! Our spring events calendar is starting to fill up, but don’t forget about nature. The beauty of our City really shines through at this time of year and I encourage you to take it all in. In the river valley, the Helen Schuler Nature Centre offers educational programming and is even home to live creature exhibits! The Alexander Galt Museum has a full schedule of programs and exhibits for all ages including activities at Fort Whoop-Up. Of course we can also enjoy activities downtown which will be home to a multitude of festivals over the coming months. Visit the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and CASA to find out what’s happening on the Lethbridge art scene and maybe indulge your creative side. Many events can also be found at www.TourismLethbridge.com. Phase Two of the brand new ATB Centre Leisure Centre and the Cor Van Raay YMCA will open in west Lethbridge in the coming months, complete with an aquatic centre featuring waterslides, a lazy river, whirlpools, a multi-sports field house and so much more! Watch for details coming soon! We have a wonderful city with much to offer. Whatever you choose, I know you and your family will find a fun adventure waiting for you. Come out and play! All the best in the coming year, Lethbridge! Chris Spearman, Mayor City of Lethbridge

Admissions, Visit Cards and Memberships (all prices include GST) New Aquatic Membership Program The City of Lethbridge has recently launched new leisure management software. Through this new electronic system, pass holders will need to use a swipe card called a Fun Pass. The Fun Pass can be used to access a number of City facilities including memberships for most pools and skating rinks. Along with the launch of the Fun Pass comes more streamlined pool membership options and a new fee structure. •The recreation pass and the fitness advantage pass options have been combined into one single pass and merged into a new fee structure. • The Fun Pass will give access to three indoor facilities (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik) along with the Henderson outdoor pool in the summer season. Pass holders are able to access all facility programing given they meet the age and program requirements. Please see Program Choices in the Guide for more information. •A 1 month and 12 month membership option has been added on top of the existing 3 and 6 month options. •Another price level has been added to separate children and youth. ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Outdoor Shoes in the Facility What are the guidelines for outdoor shoes? 1) We ask that all users of the facility remove their outdoor shoes upon entering the facility - it helps to keep the floors more sanitary especially the change rooms where patrons are barefoot - even when it is dry outside, outdoor shoes often carry in little rocks and grit that are hard on the feet and unsanitary - this grit is also hard on equipment like treadmills etc. - we ask that you leave your shoes on the racks provided or carry them to your locker in the change room & carry them back when you are done - health guidelines prohibit outdoor footwear of any type on the pool deck 2) Options include bringing indoor footwear to change into while in the facility or purchasing a pair of fabric covers that go over your outdoor shoes (these are available at the pool) 3) What about those who don’t wish to remove their shoes? Our policy is to be respectful and ask politely. Most patrons respect the “No Shoes on Deck” policy even if they don’t wish to take their shoes off in the facility Please help us to keep the facilities in great shape by removing your outdoor footwear. The staff and other patrons really appreciate the assistance especially on busy days or days that the weather isn’t the greatest.

Sportsman’s Dinners For two decades – from the early 1950s to the early 70s – an annual tradition in Lethbridge was the Kinsmen Sportsman’s Dinner.
Up Guest Ranch and the Exhibition Pavilion.
Every year, the top athletes, coaches, sportscasters and personalities from across North America came to the city to be part of the annual banquet. Names of some of the participants were: Jesse Owen, Rocky Marciano, Sandy Koufax, Bobby Unser, Jacques Plante, Whitey Ford, Tom Tresh, Norman Kwong and Rich Little. The dinner was first held in the Marquis Hotel but that venue quickly became too small. Other venues used were the Arena, Civic Sports Centre, the Whoop-

Tree Swallow | Tachycineta bicolor The Lethbridge Naturalists’ Society Join us to learn more about your natural world! Next guest speakers are students from Lethbridge College’s Ecosystem Management:
Tree Swallows are a familiar and welcome sight in Lethbridge’s river valley as they pass by with steely blue-green feathers flashing in the sunlight. Be sure to watch for migrating tree swallows forming enormous flocks numbering hundreds of thousands moving in sync. Tree Swallows are handsome aerialists—look for deep-blue iridescent backs and pristine white fronts. These birds are a true sign of spring as their arrival marks the emergence of aerial insects, a favourite for these agile birds to chase down. You are likely to find these birds near wetlands and open fields—perfect areas to hunt down their next meal. Listen for their sweet chirping calls. Tree Swallows nest in tree cavities. You can attract them to your yard in early spring by providing a nest box for them to raise a family! The oldest Tree Swallow on record was 12 years, 1 month old—recorded in Ontario in 1998. 9 Side Effects of Sport You know sport and active recreation is good for your health, but have you ever considered the side effects?
1. Work Well with others - Teamwork motivates players to do their part, helping the team reach its goal. Players learn their best chance of success is through cooperation. 2. Good Sportsmanship – Sports teach you to lose and win. You learn that that being good at something takes work and effort. You learn it’s OK to make mistakes. 3. Have a Competitive Edge - Playing sports develop the habits needed to train and compete which are both essential for work and social environments.
4. Improve Mental Health – Sport has been proven to decrease of anxiety and tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve concentration and self-esteem 5. Build Relationships - Sport can lead to friendships that might not have otherwise formed. It can bring together people from all walks of life. 6. Ability to Take Feedback – Taking unsolicited advice, even though you may not like it, is something athletes learn to do every day. 7. Self Evaluation – It’s important to know what you are good at and what you struggle with. It helps you know how to contribute to your team’s success, and what to work on. 8. Learn to be a Leader - Sport cultivates leadership skills such as communication, organization, goal setting and decision making.
